- Born and raised in and around Los Angeles, he was raised along with four siblings by his dad, biological mother (Julie Bridges) and stepmother (Wendy Treece).
- Before earning his bachelor's degree, Bridges spent his junior year in England studying at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, staying at a tiny basement flat in Chelsea, eating lots of chicken noodles and attending West End theater productions on free passes.
- He married artist Carrie Eastman in three different ceremonies: twice at the Burning Man arts festival in 2002, and once in a relatively traditional ceremony on January 2, 2003 in Kaua'i.
- As a child actor, he acted in two television films: The Kid from Nowhere (1982) directed by his father, and The Thanksgiving Promise (1986) starring the entire Bridges family. However, he chose not to continue working as a child actor, so he could be just a regular kid.
- Classically trained, he became a "cater waiter" in New York and Los Angeles for a couple of years each, before he started getting roles in television and film.
- His daughter, Caroline (whose nickname is "Lola"), was born in 2003. His son, Orson, was born on October 20, 2005.
- He attended the progressive Oakwood school with a strong emphasis on the arts, which got him interested in acting. He followed it up as a theater major and literature minor at New York's Bard College.
- He is a graduate of Bard College where he studied performing arts.
- His father is of English, as well as smaller amounts of Scots-Irish (Northern Irish), Irish, Swiss-German, and German, descent. His mother is of half Russian Jewish (from her own father) and half Austrian (from her own mother) ancestry.
- Shares his birthday (November 13th) with actor Gerard Butler. There is a four-year age difference, with Butler being older.
