After her study Theater-Film-Television at the University of Amsterdam, Barbara Bredero initially worked as a first assistant director, to later become a director. She worked with directors as Heddy Honigmann, Johan Nijenhuis, Rita Horst, Ruud van Hemert and Theo van Gogh, amongst others. 1998 she began to direct herself, initially for many TV shows, such as Meiden van de Wit, Westenwind, Floor Faber and Klokhuis. She was Creative Director of the daily tv-series VRIJland and directed the tv-series Sammy Paramaribo in Surinam (South America).
Her first short film FROM LINNAEUSSTREET WITH LOVE (Liefs uit de Linnaeusstraat) - dedicated to director Theo van Gogh - was released in 2005. Her feature film debut was in 2008 with a movie for young kids: MORRISON GETS A BABYSISTER (Morrison krijgt een zusje). Bredero then directed three very successful feature films in the MISTER TWISTER (Mees Kees) trilogy. All three MISTER TWISTER movies attracted 600,000 visitors, which is considered a record in the Netherlands.
For her feature films she has won many national and international awards, both public and jury prizes. Furthermore, Barbara Bredero also had an international session in the juries of the Cairo, Zlin and film festival Cinekid in Amsterdam.
Subsequent feature films are the youth film MY GIRAFFE (Dikkertje Dap) after the verse by Annie M. G. Schmidt and the feel-good comedy SPEECH (Taal is zeg maar echt mijn ding), inspired by the book of Paulien Cornelisse. MY GIRAFFE (2017) is nominated for Cinekid jury prize 2017, for the Crystal Bear at the Berlinale 2018 in Berlin and for the Audience Award Golden Calf at the Dutch Film Festival 2018. The film also won the prize for Best Actor and Best Director in Yaroslav, Russia 2018. My Giraffe has been sold to 13 countries, including China. In China, Belgium and Germany the film came out in 2018.
