George Basha is a writer/producer/director/actor born in Parramatta, Western Sydney. George grew up on the tough streets of western Sydney to Lebanese migrants. In 1997 George landed his first acting role playing 'Kemel' alongside the late Heath Ledger in the feature film 'Blackrock', directed by Steve Vidler. After this first taste of filmmaking, he found it hard to find subsequent acting roles. George's agent at the time told him it was hard to get him auditions because of his ethnicity. George decided to take matters into his own hands and wrote the feature 'The Combination'. 'It was my voice and the voice of western Sydney which was never really told before,' said George. As well as writing the script, George co-produced and played the lead role of 'John'.
'The Combination' opened in cinemas in 2009 to strong box office and positive reviews. Movie Show critics, Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton, rated the film four and half stars out of five. 'The Combination' was the number one film on its opening weekend until it was controversially pulled from all Event Cinemas nationally after a fight broke out at a Parramatta screening.
In 2014 George wrote his second feature 'Convict', which he also produced, co-directed and played the lead role of 'Ray'. 'Convict' has been a success on DVD and was sold out within days of its release in retail outlets. Sales were particularly high in Western Sydney. As a producer, George secured funding for both features outside the traditional funding structures, and each project has enjoyed profitable returns.
In 2019 George wrote, produced and starred in The Combination Redemption and opened up theatrically around Australia. David Stratton rated the film Four stars out of five. Once again George secured funding independently for the film. The Combination Redemption is currently sold to Netflix.
