He was profoundly deaf, as result of an incident while testing a high-velocity rifle during his army service. In July 2008 he had a cochlear implant, enabling him to hear for the first time in over fifty years; he described his experience of the implant in a BBC Radio 4 programme "Earfull - From Silence into Sound".
