- He served in the US Army during WWII, where he fought in the landings at Anzio in Italy and was awarded the Silver Star. He was severely wounded by German fire while parachuting into Normandy during D-Day. After the war, he was a drummer for Cliff Keyes Big Band.

- He eventually went to Hollywood, where he trained several stars, including John Wayne, in horse and gun handling, and worked as Errol Flynn's stunt double. In the late 1950s, he joined a rodeo display team.
