Indo-Canadian filmmaker Sanjay Patel ventures into the picturesque Northan Canada to tell the story of two greedy brothers who are forced to connect with their roots and have a first-hand experience of their Indigenous culture in “The Birds Who Fear Death.” After making his debut with Union Leader (2017), Patel seems to have polished his craft, although his well-intentioned narrative still lacks an emotional clutch, something that will hold these stories together and make their impact memorable.
In “The Birds Who Fear Death” we first meet Adam (Adam Beach), a foul-mouth middle-aged man who is extremely detached from his father William, despite him nearing his death. The detachment borderlines hate and we can see that whatever must have happened between the father-son duo was quite traumatic for him. Adam and his brother Ryan (Simon Baker), a comparatively cooler and more composed sibling, have been having financial trouble ever since they decided...

Remember that "Saturday Night Live" sketch about "Burn Notice" where the whole joke was that everyone has heard of "Burn Notice, but no one knows what "Burn Notice" is? Well, that's kind of how I imagine a lot of people feel about "The Mentalist." Who is this Mentalist? What is a Mentalist? And, if you're a Brit like myself, why does it sound like a show about an absolute nutter?
Well, it turns out "The Mentalist" was actually a pretty popular series — not quite popular enough for our humble website to have written about it in any capacity prior to this article, but popular enough to run for 151 episodes across seven seasons. Full disclosure — in case you haven't already guessed — I have not seen "The Mentalist," but apparently a lot of people have, otherwise CBS wouldn't have renewed this crime drama six times.
Anyway, back to the question at hand: what is "The Mentalist?...

Based on what I can gather about her new film, At the Sea, Amy Adams needs a pair of sandals and a stiff drink. Adams is teaming up with Kornel Mundruczó and Kata Wéber – the director and writer of Pieces of a Woman and White God – for a new drama about rejuvenation and adjusting to a life you had not planned to live.
According to Deadline, At the Sea finds Adams’s Laura returning to her family at their holiday beach house after a long rehabilitation. Once there, Laura must readjust to her new lot in life, still haunted by aspects she tried to leave behind. Staring down the barrel of a new chapter of her life, Laura must cope without her fame, fortune, and, of all things, her identity.
Adams, a six-time Academy Award-nominated actress, recently wrapped production on the sci-fi drama Klara and the Sun, which Taika Waititi directs.

In writer-director Ivan Sen’s incisive anti-detective film Limbo, Travis Hurley’s (Simon Baker) job isn’t to solve the murder of an Aboriginal girl. It’s to determine whether or not to reopen the cold case in the Australian outback mining town of Limbo—or, rather, to determine whether some other detective should even attempt to crack it.
Travis’s investigation certainly doesn’t get off to an auspicious start. After checking into a motel and shooting up, he tracks down the victim’s brother, Charlie (Rob Collins) and sister, Emma (Natasha Wanganeen). Having little reason to trust a “whitefella” cop, both refuse to speak with him. Travis is ready to pack it in when a computerized component is boosted from his car. He finds himself stuck in Limbo while he waits for the replacement part to ship.

When two stars have “chemistry,” we tend to think of it as basic animal magnetism. And maybe that’s the essence of it. Yet when a romantic movie works, even a synthetic magical rom-com trifle like “Irish Wish,” what draws us into the chemistry isn’t simply the actors’ sexy connection. It’s that the two characters have chemistry, and that each actor has it with the audience. That’s the connection Lindsay Lohan and Ed Speleers have in “Irish Wish. The movie is as frothy as the foam on a pint of Guinness, as formulaic as the last disposable Netflix rom-com. Yet these two make you believe that they belong together, and not every romantic comedy does that.
“Irish Wish” takes place in a version of the real world flecked with fairy-tale fantasy. But before we even arrive at the mystical part, the first sign that the movie’s...

One of my all-time favorite movie quotes comes from David Arquette as Dewey Riley in Scream 2 when he says, “How do you know that my dimwitted inexperience isn’t merely a subtle form of manipulation, used to lower people’s expectations, thereby enhancing my ability to effectively maneuver within any given situation?”
There’s something about Land of Dead that just screams this quote at me. Pardon the pun. My point is that George A. Romero’s 2005 zombie return looks on the surface like any B-movie fly-by-night mid-2000s zombie fest. And it’s dressed that way on purpose. Those familiar with the subtle and effective way Romero was able to land haymakers in our faces without ever telegraphing as much as a jab will assume I’m talking about the socio-political nuances of the film. While true that Romero is a master at that, I will leave that to those smarter than myself.
