It’s a big week for Prime Video as two of its most popular and acclaimed series, “The Devil's Hour” and “The Legend of Vox Machina,” debut new seasons this Thursday, Oct. 3. So to celebrate both premieres, I am counting down my top-seven favorite TV shows on the streamer!

Prime Video makes it difficult to narrow down its options to just a handful and a half (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”? “Good Omens”? “The Boys”?!), but whether you’re a fan of absurdist comedies, post-apocalyptic space westerns, or explosive animated series, there is something for everyone.

Although The Expanse rearranged the order of some character introductions over the years, each season for the most part followed the conflict of each successive book in the James S. A. Corey series. Season one followed Leviathan Wakes, season two followed Caliban’s War, and so on. But with the ninth and final novel recently released, how can the show possibly wrap up the story in a way that will satisfy fans and resolve the issues brought about by the introduction of alien technology into the solar system?

With The Expanse season 6 being the series’ final run, there isn’t much time to resolve the solar system’s woes, but the journey to whatever resolution the show gives us will be about what the characters everyone loves do with their remaining time on screen. The latest trailer for the series, which begins its final season on December 10th, gives a few hints about what relationships, both supportive and confrontational, will take center stage in the story to come.

Some established connections, such as the intimacy between Holden and Naomi, are seen to have been reforged since the circumstances that separated them in The Expanse season 5, but one powerful image that highlights a new bond appears when Amos smiles at his rescued former enemy, Clarissa “Peaches” Mao. The Expanse will charge into interplanetary battle before the year concludes.

The sci-fi drama’s sixth and final season will kick off on Friday, Dec. 10, it was announced Friday during the show’s New York Comic Con panel. The six-episode swan song will roll out weekly on Fridays, wrapping with the series finale on Jan. 14, 2022.

All the way up until its enigmatic, red-hued final moments, Season 5 of “The Expanse” had its share of mammoth-scale moments. But in the season finale, the quietest ones might end up being the longest-lasting.

In the moment, the rescue of Naomi Nagata (Dominique Tipper) is certainly one of the most striking. Completing an arc that began with a daring hard vacuum escape, Naomi’s second untethered journey through space ends with the life-saving help of Bobbie Draper (Frankie Adams). As Naomi processes everything that’s happened to her since leaving her son, the camera stays on Tipper’s face.

“The length to which that scene goes on, it never cuts. You’re just with her,” executive producer and co-showrunner Naren Shakar said. “I remember the first time I saw it on the first director’s cut, and that’s essentially unchanged from what it was at that point.

Yes, it certainly was, Alex! The Expanse season 5 finale gave us plenty of surprises, twists, and shifts in perspective, but the character arc of Alex Kamal shocked everyone with its significant departure from that of his counterpart in the James S. A. Corey novels. Showrunner Naren Shankar was able to shed some light on the narrative decisions that were made, knowing the impact that the changes would have but realizing that, in many ways, they needed to happen.

The Expanse Season 5 Episode 10

So it turns out, it seems, that The Expanse season 5 was one giant setup for season 6, the show’s final run. There’s nothing wrong with that per se, especially since the season does resolve somewhat with the reunion of the Rocinante crew and with Avasarala’s return to power, but Marco is still at large in a severely damaged solar system — and the Martians are apparently just getting started. Even the death of Alex and the onboarding of Clarissa felt more like turning points than resolutions.

Starting the episode with Holden’s self-sacrificial burn and blast to buy Alex time to rescue Naomi was totally the right move, though. You can put plenty of pieces in place to help the process, but a story that takes place centuries in the future needs people to sell it. Luckily, “The Expanse,” one of TV’s longest-running sci-fi series, enters its Season 5 with a cast and crew that’s spent over a half-decade doing it in style.

By the time the show arrives at the outset of its second full season on Amazon Prime Video, it’s seen the existence of colonial outposts on distant planets, fervent religious separatist movements, and people getting help from ancient species to commune with approximations of dead friends. It’s a strange existence for the people of Earth, Mars, and the Belters who live in the outer reaches of the solar system and beyond. By the laws of escalation that govern longform episodic storytelling, it’s an oddness that needs some way to escalate.

The Expanse season 5 returns the series to the weekly format it enjoyed while it aired on Syfy, but it’s still probably best that Amazon is dropping the first three episodes on December 16 given the amount of exposition in the opening installments. Fortunately, the triple installment ends with a bang, and the series doesn’t let up from then on. Not only are fans in for a ton of action and intrigue; there’s also plenty of rich backstory to please those anxious to revisit with their favorite characters.

The buildup in the initial episodes is not without suspense, but it’s difficult to depict the danger presented by asteroids that are weeks away from colliding with Earth. There’s an early encounter with a science vessel looking into rogue asteroids that creates some clues to follow, but other than that there are only whispers of dark shapes passing in...

Buried in the Deadline announcement that The Expanse has been renewed for a sixth (yay!) and final (oh) season, was another very important news item: Cas Anvar, who has played Martian pilot Alex Kamal in the first five seasons of the show, will not be returning for the final season. This announcement comes after an official investigation by a third party on behalf of Alcon Studios due to the many allegations of abuse and harassment made against Anvar by both coworkers and fans, some of whom were under the age of 18.

Anvar will be in Season 5, set to premiere on December 16th. Filming on the fifth season finished before the allegations against Anvar came to light. While it’s unclear what Anvar’s presence in Season 5 might look like, the actor/character has appeared in promotional content for the upcoming season.

Indeed, as the beloved and beleaguered sci-fi series prepares to premiere its fifth season in December, Amazon Studios has announced the renewal for a sixth and final season for The Expanse, as Deadline reports. Interestingly, while showrunner Naren Shankar and most of the main cast are expected to return for Season 6—notwithstanding plot developments in the upcoming Season 5—the sixth frame will bear a notable absence with the reported ousting of cast member Cas Anvar, who, having played Alex Kamal since the beginning of the series, became embroiled in sexual misconduct allegations this past summer.

Amazon has ordered a sixth and final season of the sci-fi drama, three weeks ahead of its fifth season premiere.

Deadline has also revealed that Cas Anvar, who faced a string of sexual misconduct allegations earlier this year, will not be back for the final season.

The rest of the cast, including Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, and Wes Chatham are expected to return.

The Expanse Season 5 is set to debut December 16 on Amazon Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories.

Instead of airing all episodes in one batch, the streamer is rolling them out weekly, in a similar vein to The Boys Season 2.

The news comes ahead of the show’s fifth season on the streamer, which will debut on Dec. 16. This will mark the second time the show has come to an end.

“The Expanse” aired its first three seasons on Syfy, with the cable networking having cancelled the series back in 2019. Shortly after it was cancelled, it was reported that Amazon was in talks to continue the series, which is produced and fully financed by Alcon Television Group.

'The Expanse' Season 5 trailer is out now and will drop on Amazon Prime Video on Dec. 16.

The streaming service announced the new season for 'The Expanse' during the series’ panel at New York Comic Con’s Metaverse.

The first three episodes of Season 5 will roll out on Dec. 16 and and the remaining seven released weekly on Wednesdays.

A high-octane, sci-fi adventure, 'The Expanse' — which released its first three seasons on Syfy, before finally hitting Amazon — follows the crew of the Rocinante, an illegally salvaged warship that stumbled on a vast conspiracy and a mysterious alien technology that threatened to upend the balance of power and the fate of humanity, reports TVLine.

The Expanse will return to Amazon Prime Video to thrill viewers across the holidays.

The Expanse Season 5 is set to return Wednesday, Dec. 16, on Amazon Prime Video.

The announcement was made today during the series’ panel at New York Comic Con’s Metaverse.

It was also announced that the series will not be getting a binge release for its second season on the streamer.

The first three episodes of season five will premiere Dec. 16, with new episodes available each Wednesday following, culminating in an epic season finale on February 3, 2021.

This is a similar tactic used for The Boys Season 2, and it has kept the momentum going, with vocal fans talking about it every single week.

The ten-episode Amazon Original series will be available exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 territories around the world, and is produced by Alcon Television Group.

Season five of the series picks up as multitudes of humans leave the solar system in search of new homes and vast fortunes on the earth-like worlds beyond the alien Ring, and a heavy price for centuries of exploitation of the Belt finally comes due and a reckoning is at hand. For the crew of the Rocinante and the leaders of the Inner Planets and the Belt, the past and present converge, bringing forth personal challenges that have wide-reaching repercussions throughout the Solar System. Amos (Wes Chatham) returns to Earth to confront his past and the legacy of the life he fought to leave behind.

The Expanse will launch Season 5 almost exactly a year after Season 4 landed on Amazon Prime. The “twist” is that rather than drop all 10 episodes at once, the sci-fi drama will release the first three on Wednesday, Dec. 16, and then roll out one new episode every week — just as The Boys very successfully did with its second season on the service.

The scheduling announcement along with a release of the Season 5 trailer above was made on Thursday at this year’s virtual New York Comic Con.

Update Monday: The Expanse star Cas Anvar on Monday morning issued a statement regarding the independent investigation into sexual misconduct allegations that was launched by series studio Alcon Entertainment. “I welcome the independent investigation, respect that the women who have come forward should be heard, and will make myself fully available to participate in the process as appropriate so that I may refute these very serious claims that strike at the core of what I value,” he said.

“The Expanse” star Cas Anvar is currently the subject of an independent investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, TheWrap has confirmed.

Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, authors of the series of novels upon which the show is based and producers on the show, revealed the existence of the investigation on Twitter on Friday.

“So one of the core cast of #TheExpanse has been accused of sexual misconduct,” Abraham wrote on Twitter. “We immediately passed these serious accusations onto the studio, Alcon. Alcon has engaged an independent firm to investigate this matter and takes these allegations very seriously.”

A further statement from the account under the duo’s pen name, James S.A. Corey, added, “Everyone is fully committed to the truth here. But they need a little time to do their work. Updates as I have them.”
