Devara: Part 1 is ambitious, exhausting and so high-decibel that when it’s finished, after nearly three hours, you might need to pause and reorient to reality. Which is both a good thing and a bad thing.

In interviews, writer-director Koratala Siva has said that the story is set in the 1980s and 1990s. But there is little of the film, which was shot in Telugu and dubbed in four languages, including Hindi and Tamil, to suggest this. The world of Devara seems to have sprung entirely from his imagination, where the rules are flexible.

The narrative transports us to a remote coastal region with four clans who participate in an annual combat, battling each other like gladiators. The winner’s village then keeps the altar of weapons until the next contest. The population wield torches and guns, but there are no schools or hospitals. This is a land of warriors,...

At this very moment there is a painting, in a gallery in Los Angeles, by artist Nibha Akireddy. In a show curated by Rajiv Menon, the piece depicts Akireddy seated and wearing sunglasses, her swagger pouring out of the canvas and enticing the viewer instantly. In my tour of the gallery, Menon explained that Akireddy was inspired by Telugu movies to picture herself as the alpha and the hero — in a position of power that women of those films rarely get to occupy.

I saw this painting a little over a week before screening Koratala Siva’s “Devara: Part 1,” which underscores the frustrating fantasy in Akireddy’s work. The plot is but a formality; the film’s real purpose is to highlight star N.T. Rama Rao Jr. in any possible capacity, along with fellow male costars Saif Ali Khan, Prakash Raj, Srikanth, and dozens if not hundreds of background actors and dancers.

Bhaiyya Ji, directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, brings nothing authentic or unique to the table. It is the same old story of a village goon who enjoys the kind of prominence that nobody else does. Obviously, he helps the poor but doesn’t hesitate to spill blood when he has to protect his honor and his family. Manoj Bajpayee tries his level best to give the audience something, but without good writing, he also finds himself helpless and unable to help the cause of the film. So let’s find out what happened in the film, why Bhaiyya Ji wanted revenge, and if he was able to succeed in his endeavors.

Mumbai, May 3 (Ians) Amruta Khanvilkar, who portrays the role of Surekha in the show ‘Chacha Vidhayak Hain Humare’ season three, shared that she was inspired to work on this project because of Zakir Khan, as she had always wanted to meet and chat with him.
