Powell & Pressburger’s big-scale historical epic is perhaps the best show ever about an old-school naval encounter between battleships. The first half depicts the showdown between England and Germany in the South Atlantic, and the second half a tense diplomatic game in the neutral country of Uruguay. Peter Finch, Bernard Lee and Anthony Quayle shine as sea captains.

Hammer horror fans are in for a treat, as respective collections of five William Castle films and five Hammer horror movies are coming out on Blu-ray in August, and The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant has been set to come out on Blu-ray.
The William Castle and Hammer horror collections will respectively come out on DVD August 18th from Mill Creek. The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant, meanwhile, is slated for release later this year by Kino Lorber. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for further updates.
From Mill Creek: "Iconic horror director William Castle created a simple, but winning formula for his films: a little comedy, a lot of scares, a preposterous gimmick, and a clear sense that fright films should be fun. This even meant Castle would, like Alfred Hitchcock, appear in his trailers and even the movies themselves. Though his career spanned 35 years and included everything from westerns to crime thrillers, he'll...

Clash of the Titans (Original Release Date: 12 June 1981)
The original Clash of the Titans has gotten some attention thanks to last year's remake. I guess that's cool, but I don't know how capable it is of making new fans. I can see people new to it liking it for what they feel to be kitsch. Looking at it as an adult, I can also imagine its original audience seeing it as kitsch. Harryhausen's old-school approach to stop-motion looks creaky in comparison to the "go motion" developed by Phil Tippett for Empire Strikes Back, so it might have been a tough sell even then.
It looks a little creaky in comparison to the best of earlier Harryhausen, too, so that doesn't help matters. The Rotoscoping is more apparent than it is in The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and Jason and the Argonauts. Shading mismatches,...

According to reports, Platinum Dunes, producers of horror remakes "Friday the 13th" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" will update the 1987 feature "The Monster Squad", with Rob Cohen, producer of the original film, also on board the remake.
Written by Shane Black {"Lethal Weapon") and Nicholas Hill, "The Monster Squad" was directed by Fred Dekker ("Night of the Creeps", released by Tri-Star Pictures, featuring 'classic' movie monsters led by 'Dracula' (Duncan Regehr).
'The Monster Squad' of the title is a gang of pre-teens who idolize the 'classic' movie monsters. Club leader 'Sean' (Andre Gower) obtains the diary of vampire hunter 'Abraham Van Helsing' (Jack Gwillim), revealing the story of an amulet composed of 'concentrated good'. The Squad must gain possession of the amulet before the 'day of balance', when a hole in the universe will open.

Chicago – The Winter Olympics coverage on NBC made it impossible for viewers to ignore the fact that there is indeed a “Clash of the Titans” remake coming out in April. This may seem redundant, since the vast majority of modern fantasy has in some way ripped off Greek mythology. Both “Harry Potter” and “Percy Jackson” include a variation on Medusa, the reptilian villain with snake hair and a stoney stare.
Medusa has been giving young moviegoers nightmares for decades, thanks to Ray Harryhausen, whose distinctive stop-motion effects have enhanced cinema since the early 40s. Their herky-jerky movement has a life and immediacy that simply can’t be mimicked by today’s all-too-fluid CGI. 1981’s “Titans” marked the last time Harryhausen served as “special visual effects creator.” It’s a tribute to his mastery that the film still has a timeless grandeur, despite the fact that its effects now seem to...

The remake wagon rolls on, but it does occasionally get the original film onto Blu-ray. Such is the case with the Clash of the Titans - a fondly remembered Greek god epic. The new version looks grittier than this kid-friendly fare, but the Blu-ray looks pretty gritty and maybe the movie hasn.t aged well. Perseus (Harry Hamlin) is the son of the god Zeus (Laurence Olivier). The .immaculate conception. circumstances and a prophecy around Perseus. birth caused Zeus to instruct Poseidon (Jack Gwillim) to unleash the monstrous Kraken to destroy the city of Argos. Those destructive events are threatening to repeat themselves. Calibos (Neil McCarthy) is also the son of Thetis (Maggie Smith), a goddess, and is...

Although principal photography started earlier this week, there are still more casting announcements to be made. The latest to join Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans remake is actor Danny Huston, who can be seen as William Stryker in X-Men Origins: Wolverine this weekend. Huston has previously appeared in 21 Grams, The Aviator, Marie Antoinette, Children of Men, The Number 23, and 30 Days of Night as well. In the original film, Poseidon was played by Jack Gwillim. I always remember him as the rather unexciting god who just swam around in slow motion underwater. I hope Hudson brings some more thunder this time. In Clash of the Titans, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades, vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to...

You may have heard this, but the Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) directed remake of Clash of the Titans began shooting this week. And with that start of production comes the final stage of casting, which includes adding some supporting characters to the already large cast of Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Sam Worthington, Mads Mikkelsen, Gemma Arterton, Jason Flemyng and Alexa Davalos. Variety is reporting today that Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 30 Days of Night) has joined the cast in the role of Poseidon, the god of the sea. In the original 1981 film directed by Desmond Davis, the role was played by Jack Gwillim. In Clash of the Titans, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Fiennes), vengeful god of the...

Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd and Melina Kanakaredes are heading to Mount Olympus.
The quintet has been cast in Fox 2000's fantasy-adventure adaptation "Percy Jackson" as classical Greek gods Chiron (Brosnan), Medusa (Thurman), Zeus (Bean), Poseidon (McKidd) and Athena (Kanakaredes). Aries, Hades and Persephone have not yet been cast.
The film, being directed by Chris Columbus, is shooting in Vancouver for a February release.
Columbus and Craig Titley have adapted the screenplay from Rick Riordan's best-selling children's novel "The Lightning Thief." The Greek mythology-inflected book involves Poseidon's half-human son, Percy, who's on a quest across modern America to prevent a war among the gods.
Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson have already been cast as the book's lead teenagers.
The all-star casting is reminiscent of the 1981 fantasy film "Clash of the Titans," which showcased Laurence Olivier as Zeus, Ursula Andress as Aphrodite, Claire Bloom...
