Lately, there has been a narrative that if people don’t like a project led by women or diverse individuals, it is because they are all “white, straight, manbaby, toxic troll, whiney pants, bigots.” Or maybe it’s because the show just wasn’t very good, and it happened to have diverse characters.

Case in point: “The Acolyte” vs “Agatha All Along.”

Both the Lucasfilm Disney+ show “The Acolyte” and the Marvel Disney+ show “Agatha All Along” feature female leads, people of color, LGBTQ+ characters, and witches. Yet “Agatha All Along” doesn’t get the “toxic hate” that “The Acolyte” did.

In fact, the Marvel show’s Rotten Tomatoes score is 83% critical and 81% audience, just two points apart.

Meanwhile, “The Acolyte” has a much wider gap, with a critical score of 78% and an audience score of 18%, 60 points apart.

Right off the bat, it seems that the scores are more aligned with “Agatha All Along.

Die Alone is the most recent film from Saskatchewan-based filmmaker Lowell Dean. If you’ve heard of him, it’s probably because of the over-the-top genre comedies WolfCop and Another WolfCop. But he’s done several other films, including the zombie film 13 Eerie and the post-apocalyptic action film SuperGrid, which I was lucky enough to catch along with a Q&a session with him at the Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival a few years back.

Both zombies and a post-apocalyptic setting return in Die Alone, but it’s not a typical tale of the zombie apocalypse, although that isn’t easy to tell from the opening scenes. Ethan and his girlfriend Emma were heading to his cabin when their car crashed. Ethan wakes up to find Emma and most of his memories, are missing.

Carrie-Anne Moss stars as Mae in Die Alone, a new zombie-adjacent horror movie in which her survivalist character looks after the movie's main star, Douglas Smith's Ethan, who is suffering from amnesia.

Ethan, just waking up from a car crash, is desperately seeking to find his girlfriend Emma as he is thrust into a post-apocalyptic world he doesn't recognize.

“The Acolyte” alum Jodie Turner-Smith is calling out “Star Wars” parent company Disney for not thwarting racist backlash to the franchise’s actors.

Turner-Smith appeared in the short-lived Disney+ series that also starred Amandla Stenberg, Manny Jacinto, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Lee Jung-jae. The show was cancelled after one season, with lead star Stenberg revealing that the whole cast endured “hyper-conservative bigotry and vitriol, prejudice, hatred, and hateful language” on social media.

Turner-Smith now told Glamour UK that Disney should have stepped in.

“They’ve got to stop doing this thing where they don’t say anything when people are getting fucking dog-piled on the internet with racism and bullshit,” Tuner-Smith said. “It’s just not fair to not say anything. It’s really unfair.”

She added, “It’s disappointing to feel like your studio is not having your back in a very public-facing way.”

Following what appeared to be a review-bombing campaign and a surprising level of negativity surrounding the series, The Acolyte was recently cancelled by Disney+ after a single season. Now, many Star Wars fans are left with a long list of unanswered questions about where the story was meant to go which are unlikely to ever be addressed.

Long before that, lead star Amandla Stenberg faced similar racist abuse to John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, and Moses Ingram after being cast. Earlier this week, she broke her silence on the decision and has now she's earned the support of fellow Star Wars actor Ahmed Best.

Amandla Stenberg, lead actor in the recently cancelled Disney+ series “The Acolyte,” believes intense fan backlash contributed to the show’s cancellation. In a recent Instagram Live video, Stenberg discussed the “rampage of vitriol” directed at the series and its diverse cast since it was announced.

“The Acolyte,” set in the final days of the High Republic era, premiered on Disney+ in June 2024. It followed a former Padawan and her Jedi Master investigating crimes. Created by Leslye Headland, the show featured a cast including Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jodie Turner-Smith. However, Disney cancelled it less than three months after debut.

Despite him almost certainly not being part of a possible Season 2 anyway, Lee Jung-jae is still “surprised” that Disney+ pulled the plug on fan favorite “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte.”

The show’s cancellation after one season came to light August 19. The series, set 100 years before the events of “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,” was created by Leslye Headland and starred Amandla Stenberg, Manny Jacinto, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Lee and charted the resurgence of the Sith.

Lee told Variety that he was “quite surprised” that Disney+ was not moving forward with a Season 2, even though he noted that he would most likely not be cast in a follow-up installment due to his character’s death.
