The recently released film adaption of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel “It End with Us” was a lot of things and has certainly gotten a lot of people talking. It’s unfortunate, however, that the most important subjects at its center — that of domestic violence and emotional abuse — have not been top-of-mind for most conversations regarding the film, but rather alleged personal riffs between star Blake Lively and director/co-star Justin Baldoni. When domestic violence and abuse have been discussed in reference to the film, it has typically been with criticism over how the film and its rollout have avoided more thoughtfully grappling with these themes, rarely reaching for a narrative that goes any deeper than a casual beach read.
In speaking on adapting Hoover’s novel for the screen in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Baldoni acknowledged his interest in focusing on how Lively’s character, Lily Bloom, overcomes her circumstances,...

Exclusive: Jonathan Keasey, the scribe behind Danielle Deadwyler’s Parallel and Demi Lovato’s Tow, has signed on to adapt The Barracks Thief, a novella from award-winning author Tobias Wolff.
Keasey joins playwright Tyler Rivenbark on the project. The pair will collaborate on the screenplay based on Wolff’s novella.
Wolff, an Emeritus professor at Stanford, is best known as a memoirist. Most notably, his 1989 book This Boy’s Life: A Memoir was adapted for the screen by Michael Caton-Jones, with Leonardo DiCaprio starring as the teenage Wolff in his breakout big-screen performance and Robert De Niro as his abusive step-father Dwight.
The Barracks Thief is the story of three young paratroopers waiting to be shipped out to Vietnam. Brought together one sweltering afternoon to stand guard over an ammunition dump threatened by a forest fire, they discover in each other an unexpected capacity for recklessness and violence. Far from being alarmed by this discovery,...

While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny didn’t quite make the splash it was hoping to make when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year, another movie that made its debut there (to much greater success) is Martin Scorsese’s new anticipated drama Killers of the Flower Moon. This film brings a collaboration of Scorsese’s two prominent go-to actors of his career, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Both of them have worked together previously, portraying father and son in 1993’s This Boy’s Life from director Michael Caton-Jones. However, the standout performance that audiences have been raving about is Lily Gladstone, as DiCaprio’s Native American spouse.
Apple has recently released a new trailer for the drama. And the official synopsis reads,
At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight.

Penned by Ryan Elkins, the script was previously recognized as a semifinalist for the 2017 Academy Nicholl Fellowship. “Baggage” marks Elkins’ feature film debut, but the up-and-comer is currently in production on another movie as well, which has yet to be announced.

A TV series adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s thriller novel “The Day of the Jackal” has been ordered by Peacock and Sky, it was announced Thursday.
First published in 1971, the original “The Day of the Jackal” novel is set in 1963, the year the president of France, Charles de Gaulle, granted Algeria its independence. The move resulted in several assassination attempts on his life, mostly from the far-right Organisation de L’Armée Secrète (Oas). The novel focuses on a fictional Oas plot to kill de Gaulle via a mysterious foreign assassin with the codename “The Jackal.” Meanwhile, the French government gets wind of the plot and hires Deputy Commissioner Claude Lebel to find and capture the assassin. The novel was well received upon publication, and Forsyth received an Edgar Award for Best Novel from the Mystery Writers of America in 1972.

Hobart, Oct 21 (Ians) Captain Craig Ervine played a captain’s knock of 58 off 54 balls while Sikandar Raza smacked a cameo of 40 as Zimbabwe beat Scotland by five wickets in the first round of Icc Men’s T20 World Cup at Bellerive Oval to end up as winners of Group B and clinch the final Super 12 spot.
After Tendai Chatara and Richard Ngarava picked two wickets each in a clinical bowling performance to restrict Scotland to a paltry total of 132/6 in 20 overs, Zimbabwe were in trouble at 42/3 in eight overs.
But Ervine, who hit his sixth T20I fifty, and Raza shared a 64-run stand off 43 balls, followed by Milton Shumba and Ryan Burl applying finishing touches for Zimbabwe to chase down the total with nine balls to spare, continuing their good run in the tournament after featuring the last time in T20 World Cup in 2016.

Hobart, Oct 21 (Ians) Tendai Chatara and Richard Ngarava picked two wickets each in a clinical bowling performance as Zimbabwe restricted Scotland to a paltry total of 132/6 in 20 overs in final Group B match in round one of the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup at Bellerive Oval on Friday.
Scotland were unable to justify their captain Richie Berrington’s decision to bat first as none of the batters looked fluent, including their top-scorer George Munsey, who made 54 off 51 balls with seven fours.
Moreover, Zimbabwe bowlers resorted to straight lines and with spinners keeping things tight, didn’t concede a single six in the innings, the first time an instance like this was recorded in ongoing T20 World Cup.
Scotland lost their openers Michael Jones and Matthew Cross in the first 4.1 overs. Munsey, Berrington and Calum MacLeod tried their best to get the Scotland innings back on track, but they never...

Hobart, Oct 20 (Ians) Taking inspiration from their shock 42-run win over West Indies in their opening Group B match in first round of Icc Men’s T20 World Cup, Scotland coach Shane Burger is confident of executing their plans right on Friday to upstage their opponents Zimbabwe in order to qualify for Super 12 stage of the tournament for second straight time in as many editions.
“We know that without focusing too much on the opposition, if we go out and play our way, we know we can beat any team. We did so not very long ago against the two-time world champions (West Indies). So if we execute the way we know, hopefully it will send ripples through that Zimbabwe team. We can put a bit more pressure on them,” said Burger in the pre-match press conference.

Hobart, Oct 19 (Ians) Curtis Campher and George Dockrell shared an unbeaten 119-run stand for the fifth wicket in Ireland’s successful chase of 177 to seal a come-from-behind six-wicket win over Scotland in their Group B match of the first round in Icc Men’s T20 World Cup at Bellerive Oval on Wednesday.
After opener Michael Jones hit a magnificent 86 off 55 balls to carry Scotland to a massive 176/5, the bowlers came into act by reducing Ireland to 61/4 in 9.3 overs and victory looked improbable with every minute.
That’s when Campher (72 not out off 37 balls) and Dockrell (39 not out off 27 balls) joined forces to shock Scotland and get a win out of nowhere for Ireland with a brilliant partnership in just 9.3 overs and keep them in the reckoning for a Super 12 spot.

Hobart, Oct 19 (Ians) Scotland continued to impress in the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup as opener Michael Jones hit a magnificent 86 to carry the side to a massive 176/5 against Ireland in their Group B match of the first round at Bellerive Oval on Wednesday.
It was a dominant innings for Scotland, who hardly kept any foot wrong from the time of winning the toss and electing to bat first. Jones was unarguably the star of Scotland’s innings, hitting six fours and four sixes in his 55-ball 86, at a high strike-rate of 156.36.
After losing his opening partner George Munsey in the second over of the innings, Jones had to be cautious as well as adjust to the conditions. After passing through the initial phase, he then came out swinging with his array of shots, and looking delightful in hitting a majority of his boundaries through the leg-side, including one...

Hobart, Oct 17 (Ians) Just 24 hours after Namibia kick-started the Men’s T20 World Cup with a stunning 55-run win over Sri Lanka, Scotland pulled off another major upset in the tournament with a shock 42-run victory over two-time champions West Indies in a Group B first round match at the Bellerive Oval on Monday.
After opener George Munsey carried his bat throughout the innings to slam an unbeaten 66 to help Scotland post an excellent 160/5, left-arm spinner Mark Watt led a fantastic bowling show with his brilliant 3/12 to bowl out West Indies for 118 all out in 18.3 overs.
The 42-run win for Scotland, ranked 15th in men’s T20I rankings, comes exactly a year after they defeated Bangladesh by six runs in their opening first round match of 2021 T20 World Cup at Al Amerat, Oman and entering the ongoing tournament on the back of playing only two T20Is this year.

For the West Indies, veteran all-rounder Jason Holder was the pick of the bowlers with 2/14, while young fast bowler Alzarri Joseph picked up 2/28 while Odean Smith finished with figures of 1/31.

Post resumption after a 47-minute break, Scotland scored only 16 runs in their next four overs, but lost Jones and Matthew Cross to Jason Holder, who hit the deck hard with his hard lengths to get West Indies back in the match.

This adaptation of Alan Warner’s The Sopranos is led by a terrific ensemble cast – though some of the gags feel dated post #MeToo
After Alan Warner published his brilliant and hilarious third novel The Sopranos in 1998, about a group of working-class convent schoolgirls on the rampage in Edinburgh, for years the big surprise has been that it hasn’t been turned into a film. Now, finally, here it is, an adaptation of The Sopranos – and the thing is, it’s a few years too late. Post #MeToo, there are scenes here that are a bit off; in all honesty, though, they might have felt wrong as far back as the Rotherham child abuse scandal. Such as the moment when the girls on the back of the coach flash their bras and wave “shag me” signs to passing builders’ vans.
Still, plenty of Warner’s wonderfully un-pc gags stand the test of time.

Things were going well for Scottish filmmaker Michael Caton-Jones at the start of 2020. The director of Scandal (1989), This Boy’s Life (1993) and Rob Roy (1995), among many others, Caton-Jones was preparing for the theatrical release of Our Ladies, a passion project he’d been trying to get made for over 20 years. It had received its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in October 2019, where it “played out of this world”, in his words, to an audience of roughly 800 attendees in its first public screening. To celebrate the release of Our Ladies, which opens in UK cinemas this week, we sat down with the film’s amazing cast and its director to find out about one of the year’s very best films.
Based on the award-winning novel “The Sopranos” by Alan Warner, Our Ladies follows a group of Scottish schoolgirls on a day trip to Edinburgh to perform in a choir competition. These teens from a small town in the Scottish Highlands become a chance to escape their daily lives and run riot in the big city. It’s been a quarter century since the release of Rob Roy, a film directed by Michael Caton-Jones and featuring the pairing of Liam Neeson and Jessica Lange. The period drama is about the eponymous 18th Century Scotland clan chief Robert Roy MacGregor.
Evidently there was a box-office hunger for this type of film around 1995, since one month later Mel Gibson’s Braveheart opened. The latter tragically went on to win Best Picture some nine months later. Both films feature tales of broad-stroke heroism, where the main figure is portrayed as a rebel fighting the system, full of masculine bravado and Bde (the un-fun kind)...

This year’s edition of the BFI London Film Festival, which starts today, marks Tricia Tuttle’s first in an official capacity as artistic director after she stood in last year while her predecessor was on sabbatical. So what does she have planned?
Tuttle looks back at last year’s performance with satisfaction when, with a total audience of more than 200,000, per screen attendance rose by 12% to an average paid occupancy of 72%, and overall capacity of 84%. This she ascribes to “a strong year for films driving audience interest,” which she believes she’s matched this year with, among 229 feature films, “The Personal History of David Copperfield” opening the festival, and “The Irishman” closing it, and gala screenings including “Knives Out,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “The King” and “Jojo Rabbit.”
Among the festival’s world premieres are Wash Westmoreland’s “Earthquake Bird,” starring Alicia Vikander, Gerard Johnson’s “Muscle,” Michael Caton-Jones’ “Our Ladies,...

“After more than 25 years working together in the U.S. under Sony Pictures Classics, both Pedro and myself consider Sony as part of our family; this decision reinforces the bonds we have been developing with Sony for a long time and this can’t be better news for all of us,” he added.

Though there’s no sign he plans to retire soon — he has several further projects in the can — producer-star Ron Perlman’s vehicle “Asher” is the kind of movie that often serves as an actor’s onscreen bow-out these days. Like recent “The Old Man and the Gun” or imminent “The Mule,” it provides “Hellboy” star Perlman a way to both stay in the game and acknowledge “aging out” as a veteran criminal whose next job may be his last.
That blend of action genre content and character study is a comfortable mix for Perlman, even if “Asher” doesn’t quite have the stuff to be truly memorable on either count. This leisurely neo-noir, directed by Michael Caton-Jones from a first produced script by Jay Zaretsky, opens today on 10 U.S. screens simultaneous with digital-formats release.
Asher (Perlman) is a dignified silver-haired gent living a quiet, solitary existence in his New York loft apartment.

Ron Perlman says: "Acting is like a drug, like shooting heroin and getting this incredible sensation”. In recent years, however, the star of such magnificent films as Cronos, The City of Lost Children and, certainly, Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy diptych, has taken as well the role of producer through his company Wing and a Prayer, so that he can be "more realistically involved with a movie, finding what’s worthy of my time as opposed to what’s not worthy of my time.” Directed by Michael Caton-Jones, Asher is Perlman’s latest production, in which the man himself plays the titular character, the quintessential solitary and professional hitman who will have to face a turning point in his life linked to issues like aging, health, and love, the...

Barcelona — “Hellboy’s” Ron Perlman will feature as the special guest at this year’s 4th Sitges Pitchbox, replacing last year’s star mentor, Guillermo del Toro.
Rapidly emerging as one of the coolest events on Spain’s industry event circuit, organized by online platform Filmarket Hub, the Sitges Pitchbox will take place Oct. 5 during this year’s Sitges Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, a mecca for fanboys and a trendy crowd of cinema-goers from Barcelona.
Perlman, an articulate and cultured actor as likely to quote Shakespeare as a genre movie in interviews, looks set to deliver some advice to the producer-directors pitching genre projects at the event and a packed audience.
Widely known for, if often hardly recognizable in, movies such as “Hellboy’,” Perlman’s works include TV series “Sons of Anarchy,” “Hand of God” – which he starred in and produced for Amazon Studios– and “Beauty and the Beast,...

Ron Perlman shared a graphic story to his official Twitter page about an encounter with Harvey Weinstein at a charity event years ago. The actor said Weinstein told him to shake his hand during the event, so he went ahead and urinated on them before the two officially shook hands. Perlman’s gesture makes it clear the actor was never a fan of the former film producer.
“Did I ever tell [you] about when Harvey Weinstein told me to make sure I shook his hand at a charity event?” Perlman asked his nearly 700,000 followers on Twitter. “I stopped in the men’s room and pissed all over my hand, then went straight up to him on the receiving line.”
Perlman finished his tweet by wondering if the same thing happens to Donald Trump when he orders food. “I think about that every time [Donald Trump] opens up his KFC,” the actor said.
