45 years ago, Ken Foree faced off with the undead in one of the greatest zombie movies ever made, the George A. Romero classic Dawn of the Dead. Now, Foree has written a zombie story of his own – and it’s coming our way in the form of a graphic novel called Descendants of the Undead! Copies of the 30 page first issue are available for pre-order through a Kickstarter campaign that has greatly surpassed its initial goal and still has ten days to go. You can check out the campaign at This Link.
The first issue of Descendants of the Undead is said to begin “a terrifying series that incorporates the mayhem of zombies with striking visuals and electrifying characters – both human and not! We meet ‘Dad’, a seasoned zombie survivor, the patriarch of a straggly group of teenagers on an isolated island occupied by an advanced form of zombies. The...

Todd starred in Tom Savini’s 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead as Ben, the role played by Duane Jones in George A. Romero’s iconic 1968 original. Todd’s warm, commanding performance was one of the primary reasons this remake was so successful and it was a precursor to his turn as Candyman. Despite...

Like a veteran high roller playing the odds, indie film execs crowding the new Vegas venue at the Palms Casino for this year’s American Film Market are hedging their bets. The independent film business, a risky proposal at the best of times, has becoming increasingly precarious with theatrical releases an all-or-nothing proposal — the jackpot of Longlegs versus the bust of Borderlands and Megalopolis — and buyers hesitant to place their chips on anything that doesn’t look like a sure thing.
For indie movies at the AFM, that means a doubling down on genre films, particularly horror and action, and a move away from drama and comedy titles, which are considered riskier bets internationally.
“People are really focused on genre, even some of the smaller international sales companies are boosting their genre slates,” notes one U.S. seller. “Success has become impossible to predict and everyone is looking for anything that has a built-in audience.

Back in 1986, David Cronenberg directed a remake of Kurt Neumann’s 1958 sci-fi horror classic The Fly (which was based on George Langelaan’s short story) – and the result is considered to be one of the best remakes of all time. 20th Century Fox, now the Disney subsidiary 20th Century Studios, has been wanting to replicate that success with another remake for a couple of decades now… but the project has never managed to escape from development hell. Cronenberg wanted to come back and make another Fly movie, but it fell apart over budgetary issues. Screenwriter Todd Lincoln wrote a remake of The Fly that he described as a “dark, twisted, grounded re- imagining… Part Val-Lewton, part J.G. Ballard, part Neal Stephenson with some Horror Manga touches.” The studio wasn’t into it. J.D. Dillard was attached to direct a new version of The Fly for years, then stepped away from it.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.
A new movie set in the same universe as David Cronenberg's '80s body-horror masterwork, The Fly, is in development.
Deadline reports that Nikyatu Jusu is set to write and direct the project for 20th Century Studios and Chernin Entertainment. The movie is not expected to be a reboot or a direct sequel, and there's no word on casting.
Jusu garnered acclaim for her work on 2022's Nanny, and also has a sequel to George A. Romero's classic Night of the Living Dead in the works with The Walking Dead‘s Latoya Morgan penning the script.
“The original version of Night of the Living Dead is still so resonant to this day,” said Jusu when the project was first announced. “Every era has the zombie that it needs and right now, zombies reflect the ways that humans treat each other and show us who is truly the monster.

Here's some *ahem* buzzy horror movie news for your Tuesday morning. David Cronenberg's seminal 1986 body horror masterpiece The Fly is set to be the basis for a seemingly Nia DaCosta's Candyman style, universe expanding spin-off at 20th Century Studios. Per Deadline's reporting, Nanny filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu is actively developing, well, The Fly, on which the in-demand rising name in horror will serve as both writer and director.
As Deadline are quick to note, whilst plot details for Jusu's films are being kept shtum at the moment, "sources stressed that it’s set in the universe of Cronenberg’s film, rather than a straightforward remake." Yes, it seems we're heading Into The Brundleverse! Now, how exactly Jusu's movie will tie in to Cronenberg's cult classic remains to be seen, but there's no shortage of possible routes to go down — especially in this modern age of increasingly radical, head spinning scientific experimentation.

The director of The Nanny, Nikyatu Jusu, is reportedly working on a continuation of David Cronenberg’s 1986 body horror, The Fly.
It’s been a couple of years since writer-director Nikyatu Jusu made her debut with The Nanny, a social thriller with horror elements that was an absorbing watch, if a little tonally uneven. Our review at the time stated that The Nanny ‘combines social commentary, drama and horror – but doesn’t quite balance them.’ But the beautifully made film made one thing clear: Jusu is a filmmaker with bags of potential and we’ve been eagerly waiting to see what she’d turn her hand to next.
At the time of The Nanny's release, Jusu was quickly attached to two prestigious horror projects, with public announcements stating that she would be working on a vampire film produced by Jordan Peele. If that wasn’t exciting enough, the filmmaker...

The concept of the movie cameo no longer means what it used to. Nowadays, we have entire feature films serving as a cameo delivery system, where "cameos" aren't brief appearances by very recognizable figures, but are actually entire supporting roles. Thanks to the comic book movie and the output of Marvel Studios in particular, the cameo has since become far more than the Easter egg it used to be. In a cinematic landscape where what we now call cameos can range from teaser appearances of characters to be seen in a future film to big-name actors who were merely kept out of the marketing materials, is there any room for the classic-style cameo anymore?
Fortunately for us horror nerds, along comes "Terrifier 3" to answer that question with a resounding "Yes." The latest installment in the Art the Clown saga includes all manner of cameo appearances, ranging from some actors...

If we’re putting Alfred Hitchcock, who was a genius in every aspect and one of the best and most important filmmakers of all time, aside, the first major horror director who influenced the genre in a major way was the legendary George A. Romero, whose 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead is still considered to be a classic of cinema in general.
This low-budget indie horror became exceptionally influential, with many later horror directors, such as John Carpenter or Wes Craven, being influenced by Romero and his work. And while the legendary director passed away in 2017 after battling cancer, it seems that he is coming back from the grave – which is most fitting, seeing how his specialty was zombie films – to give us one last movie.

Stephen King, often hailed as the King of Horror, isn’t immune to a good scare. Despite his extensive experience in crafting eerie narratives, one particular film managed to scare him senseless. As Halloween approaches, he’s shared the horror movie that tops his list for inducing sheer terror.
King admitted that his favorite horror movie has changed over time. At 16, he was deeply disturbed by ‘The Haunting,’ a 1963 film by Robert Wise about a haunted house investigation.
However, his adult self gives that title to ‘The Blair Witch Project.’ The 1999 film left him feeling a growing sense of dread, culminating in a terrifying final 35 seconds.
The movie shows three filmmakers venturing into a forest to document a local legend, only to face unsettling occurrences.
Yet, another film surpassed ‘Blair Witch’ in King’s eyes. George A. Romero’s 1968 film ‘Night of the Living Dead‘ profoundly affected him and continues to do so.

Back in 1968, George A. Romero made his feature directorial debut with one of the greatest horror movies ever made, Night of the Living Dead – and while doing so, he also introduced the world to flesh-eating ghouls that became a new definition for the world “zombie.” Romero, who passed away in 2017, went on to make several more zombie movies over the decades… and recently, his daughter Tina Romero revealed that she’s making her own feature directorial debut with a zombie movie called Queens of the Dead. Deadline reports that Charades has acquired the international sales rights to the project – and while doing so, they unveiled the first image from the film! You can check it out in this article.

Daughter of late director George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead), Tina Romero is making her own mark on the zombie genre with Queens of the Dead, and Deadline shares a first look image this week. Deadline also notes, “Charades has acquired international sales rights.”
Being directed by Tina Romero, the upcoming Queens of the Dead is said to pay tribute to George A. Romero’s brand of zombie cinema with a “fresh, contemporary, and queer twist.”
Stay tuned for U.S. release information.
Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Margaret Cho (Fire Island), Brigette Lundy-Paine (I Saw The TV Glow) and Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story) are set to star.
“The story follows an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies who must put aside their personal dramas and use their unique skills to combat the brain-thirsty undead when a zombie apocalypse breaks out during their drag show in Brooklyn.

Although Halloween is embraced by all ages these days, it was mostly a children’s holiday not all that long ago. What is essentially now a multi-month event was a single day of fun back then. The real world has changed in this regard, but some things stay the same in TV anthologies; kids are still the focal point in stories about Halloween.
In episodic anthologies rooted in horror, Halloween stories occasionally happen but are not guaranteed or even timely. Horror series, after all, do not rely on Halloween in order to be horror. The chances are, though, if an episode is all about Halloween, the protagonists are probably young.
Here are five must-watch tales of kid-friendly Halloween horror from TV anthologies.

Here’s a special spooky treat, trick or treaters: Earlier this week, We Hate Movies co-hosts Andrew Jupin and Eric Szyszka joined fellow Halloweenies co-hosts Dan Caffrey and Michael Roffman in Haddonfield to talk all things Michael Myers and the Halloween franchise.
From the all-time highs that got them into the genre to the deep, dark doldrums of the series, the four carve through one pumpkin after another. They also discuss why aesthetic is so integral to horror, their podcast roots, and why Dr. Loomis is so much fun to impersonate.
Want more from our friends? We Hate Movies will be covering horror films for the rest of this month, new episodes released on Mondays wherever you get your podcasts. This past week, they hit up Fiddler’s Green to discuss George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead.

By the time Toby Wilkins’ 2008 film Splinter first arrived on the scene — a limited theatrical premiere on Halloween — zombies were everywhere. Yet the first-time director managed to rework the already overused concept into something fresh, not to mention plain creepy. And with its preference for practical effects wizardry, Splinter stood out from its fellow high-concept horrors made on a low budget.
Splinter references the grandfather of cinematic zombies, George A. Romero’s iconic Night of the Living Dead, in a number of ways, apart from the most obvious. Indeed the characters are holed up and fighting for their lives against the walking dead, although in this case, an isolated gas station rather than a farmhouse serves as their refuge. Other films tend to use these pitstops as we do in real life; they are temporary detours before heading off for a proper destination. Instead the director and screenwriters bring the journey to a screeching halt,...

The zombie movie isn't dead, but it certainly feels like its been shuffling on its last legs for the last few years. George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" didn't quite create the zombie movie, but it more or less solidified the ideas and tropes we now associate with it. There were many zombie movies in the years following the 1968 release of "Night of the Living Dead," some of them directed by Romero himself. But at some point, zombie horror became ubiquitous and overdone. If I had to pinpoint the start of this oversaturation, it was probably the combination of Danny Boyle's low-fi zombie flick "28 Days Later" in 2002, Zack Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead" remake and Edgar Wright's comedy "Shaun of the Dead," both released in 2004, and the 2010 premiere of "The Walking Dead." In the wake of these particular titles, it suddenly felt like zombies were everywhere.

Land of the Dead was released in a special edition 4K by Scream Factory on October 15th.
Zombies aren’t traditionally depicted as intelligent. They’re monsters motivated by the relentless drive to feast on human flesh and brains. George A. Romero, the iconic horror filmmaker behind classics such as Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, first introduced the idea of intelligent zombies in Day of the Dead. He takes that idea and ramps it up for his forth installment in the living dead series.

The worlds of horror will collide in a highly anticipated graphic novel debut this spring as two of the genre’s most iconic names—John Carpenter and the late George A. Romero—join forces for John Carpenter Presents George A. Romero’s The Amusement Park. Based on Romero’s once-lost 1975 film, The Amusement Park, the graphic novel will be available in stores and online beginning May 7, 2025, thanks to a collaboration between Storm King Comics and the George A. Romero Foundation.
Originally conceived as a public service announcement, The Amusement Park explores themes of ageism and society’s neglect of the elderly through Romero’s distinct and unsettling lens. Though the film was shelved for decades, it has been recently restored and praised for its hauntingly surreal portrayal of growing old. Now, this powerful piece of Romero’s legacy will reach a new generation, reimagined as a graphic novel.

There’s a popular idiom often attributed to Picasso about how good artists copy and great artists steal. Naturally, this isn’t referring to plagiarism, but rather the idea that it’s better for an artist to reproduce something directly from the source instead of simply regurgitating it as-is. The way I see it, this sentiment also applies to creative rip-offs, as I’ll take an unlicensed cash-grab over endless sequels any day of the week.
After all, this is how we got beloved franchises like Friday the 13th (the original film was an attempt at capitalizing on the success of Halloween) and even Star Wars (A New Hope was meant to be a cheap Flash Gordon knock-off). And in honor of all the rip-offs that continue to feed the ouroboros that is popular culture, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six spooky Mockbusters that are actually worth your time.

Although George A. Romero didn’t pioneer the concept of the zombie movie, he undoubtedly perfected it, especially with Dawn of the Dead. Ever since its success, this particular subgenre of horror has been hacked, slashed, killed, and resurrected from its grave for the big as well as the small screen. But how many of these attempts were truly refreshing? Shaun of the Dead is a personal favorite of mine as it used the zombie apocalypse to trigger a man’s maturity. The use of found footage filmmaking to cover a zombie outbreak never got better than Rec. Setting up a romance between a human and a zombie in Warm Bodies was pretty unique. Humans fighting zombies inside a train in Train to Busan was excellent. I can’t speak to the quality of the film, but I think Pride and Prejudice and Zombies deserves a shout out because it...

‘American Horror Stories’ delivers five uniquely alarming tales of terror that tackle liminal spaces, clones, Leprechauns, and more.
“You know, we invented hell.”
There was a lot of promise in American Horror Stories — an episodic anthology horror series — when it was first announced as a companion piece to American Horror Story proper. American Horror Stories’ first season was a lackluster effort that oddly felt compelled to needlessly connect its stories to American Horror Story. The second season worked out many of these kinks and, while still imperfect, there are some genuine gems in the mix, like the Twilight Zone-aping “Facelift.” The third season was an even greater improvement that arguably didn’t have any duds in the mix. More importantly, American Horror Stories seemed to finally find the right rhythm and creative team to do this series justice. Additionally, Season 3 eclipsed the modern seasons of American Horror Story and felt...

Spoopy Season is upon us, dear readers, and any cineaste worth their weight in bone matter is likely scouring the world's many streaming services looking for the best fright flicks available. Most casual horror fans may be content to idly re-watch well-trodden classics like "Halloween," while more enterprising gorehounds will be studiously studying the carefully curated films on Shudder. "My conclusion is that the 'scariest' varies according to the viewer's age," King writes. "As a kid of 16, the scariest movie was 'The Haunting' (directed by Robert Wise). As an adult, it was 'The Blair Witch Project,' with that building sense of doom and those truly horrible last 35 seconds.
