“Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Homicide: The Movie,” which has been remastered to HD and 4K for the very first time, will make its streaming debut in the U.S. on Peacock beginning August 19. The police drama examines the calculating and exacting detective work of the often confrontational, passionate, and opinionated homicide department in Baltimore. Homicide was based on David Simon’s book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets and created by Paul Attanasio; Tom Fontana was the showrunner and executive produced with Barry Levinson, Henry Bromell and Jim Finnerty. "His eyes. I'll never forget that look in his eyes." 1091 Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for Tar, an indie monster horror film from filmmaker Aaron Wolf (of LDUniversity). For 40,000 years, a long forgotten wetland teemed with ancient creatures, but now all that’s left is a pit of hot, sticky tar surrounded by a vast urban landscape. For Barry Greenwood and his son Zach, there's not too much left of their family business either. With the city's subway expanding under their feet and their office building slated for demolition, Barry, Zach and their employees are forced to shut down their shop and move out. But when something primal is awoken by the underground construction, a night of somber packing becomes a desperate fight for survival. Starring Timothy Bottoms, Aaron Wolf, Graham Greene, and Max Perlich. There's no real shots of the monster found in this trailer, probably for...

Someone managed to get Detective Frank Pembleton back in the box.
Members of the cast and production team of the critically acclaimed NBC drama “Homicide: Life on the Street” came together at the Paley Center in New York to talk about the distinctive drama that flouted many of the conventions of network TV. The main focus of the show, which ran between 1993 and 1999, was on how Baltimore police detectives passed the time while trying to solve murders. But there were few car chases, shootings or dramatic arrest scenes. “Every episode was like an affront to network television,” noted Andre Braugher, who played Detective Pembleton on the program and came to wider fame while working on it.
Producer Barry Levinson, showrunner Tom Fontana, producers Julie Martin and Anya Epstein; cast members Richard Belzer, Braugher and Clark Johnson; and writer David Simon, whose book, “Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets,” became the inspiration for the program,...

The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.
The episode count for the David Lynch-directed series was always in question, but that tweet suggested we'd be getting even more episodes than originally planned. Said tweet has since been deleted, so we'll have to wait to see how that pans out.

Hollywood's coolest mom! Jennifer Lopez walked the red carpet for the premiere of her new movie "Home" on Sunday, and brought two very special guests along for the outing. The actress -- who voices Lucy in the animated flick -- was accompanied by her adorable twins Max and Emme, who posed alongside their famous mama. Clad in a Zuhair Murad mini-dress, the singer looked sophisticated and demure in the baby-blue frock with lace embroidery. She finished off her look with gorgeous waves and Christian Louboutin pumps. But her best accessories had to be her 7-year-old twins! Little Max wore an adorable seer-sucker suit and straw fedora while his sister Emme wore a cute pink dress with ballet flats. At one point, the cameras became a little too much for her son, who began to cry during all the red carpet commotion. J.Lo knelt down to comfort the youngster and put him at ease.

In discussing the Season 5 premiere of "Justified" before it aired Tuesday night (Jan. 7), I used the words "lived-in" and "familiar" to describe it. Depending on how you read them, those might not be the most flattering terms to describe a TV show in its fifth year.
Parts of "Justified" have always felt familiar, built as it is on the foundation of westerns and cop shows. What really stands out in the premiere, though, is how the show has succeeded in creating a world where Raylan Givens, Boyd Crowder and most everyone else we spend time with is surrounded by their past. Old associations, acquaintances and grudges are next to impossible to shake. There's now an almost physical feeling of the past hanging over them.
It's what's driving Boyd in his new heroin business with Wynn Duffy -- he needs fast money to help get Ava out of prison, only to...

In the early part of this century, Lynch spent a lot of time putting together his website David Lynch.com. Embracing the internet and the opportunities his own website afforded him, Lynch would make his own shorts available via this medium as well as the weird sitcom Rabbits and animated series Dumbland. Adam Arkin's trading in his "Justified" director's chair for a spot in front of the camera: According to EW, he's guest-starring in two episodes of the FX show this season as Quarles' boss Theo Tonin.
Arkin has directed five episodes of "Justified," including the Season 1 finale. He'll be appearing in episode 311 and the Season 3 finale.
Executive producer Graham Yost tells EW that viewers will get more back story on Quarles and Theo in episode 310.
"Theo saved his life, but in a weird way," Yost says.
He also adds that Arkin will have a unique look for his "Justified" acting debut.
"I don't want to give it away. There is a physical tweak that Adam asked for," he says. "Adam wanted to be distinctive, so when you see it, it's like, Oh wow, that's pretty wild. He's not dressed as a pirate or anything. But he looks cool."

After directing five episodes of FX’s Justified, including this season’s Dewey Crowe hour (“Holy s—, you mean I had four kidneys?”) and the memorable season 1 finale “Bulletville,” Adam Arkin is ready to step in front of the camera. He’ll guest-star in two episodes later this season as Quarles’ boss Theo Tonin, head of the Detroit Mafia. Look for him in episodes 311 and 313, the latter being the season 3 finale.
In this week’s episode, “The Man Behind the Curtain,” Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) theorized that Theo had banished Quarles (Neal McDonough) to Kentucky because of his penchant for beating up male hustlers.

Spoiler Alert! This week’s episode of Justified, “The Man Behind the Curtain” written by Ryan Farley and directed by Peter Werner, found Quarles (Neal McDonough) and Boyd (Walton Goggins) backing opposing candidates for Harlan sheriff, and Quarles and Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) trying to out maneuver one another with the arrival of Sammy Tonin (Max Perlich), the son of Quarles’ boss. Since the episode ended with Quarles finding Gary (William Ragsdale), we’ll give him the edge — for now. The 1990s were quite a turning point for society as a whole. After a decade of conservative politics, neon colors, feel-good music, corporate greed and the entire “Me” generation, we as a collective whole hit a brick wall and said “enough”. Suddenly bands who were labeled “college rock” were hitting the popular stations, Grunge put Seattle back on the map. And suddenly no one knew who they were anymore. Clothiers stole from every imaginable source for inspiration, songwriters eschewed the party scene for lyrics that delved deep into the darker recesses of the soul, and the tough guy made way for the sensitive, caring man who wasn’t afraid to show emotion.

The Independent
Prolific independent auteur Morty Fineman has had quite a run, from 1981's "Festering Destiny" and 1982's "Large Angry Antennae" to 1991's "Supermodel Carnival II: Runway Runaways" and 1993's "Psycho Vet Meets Hercules". In a 37-year career, Fineman has cranked out more than 400 low-budget features and earned the respect of many Hollywood veterans, from Ron Howard to Nick Cassavetes.
Including sequences from such classics as "The Foxy Chocolate Robot" (1976) starring Fred Williamson and glimpses of Fineman's latest, troubled production "Ms. Kevorkian", "The Independent" is -- you may have guessed -- a bunch of baloney. Fineman is fictional, and this mock documentary, distributed by Arrow Releasing, is an affectionate tribute to schlockmeisters who don't know when or how to quit.
Jerry Stiller is perfect casting as the obsessed, sensitive, always-on-the-brink-of-catastrophe Fineman, who tries to stop lenders from seizing all his old films -- lenders who measure the films' worth like so many pounds of potatoes. Reluctantly at first, but soon with genuine camaraderie, his daughter Paloma (Janeane Garofalo) helps in the time of crisis, while his trusty assistant (Max Perlich) continues to endure abuse and work miracles in the gloomy environment of Fineman's sinking business.
Directed by Stephen Kessler and written by Kessler and producer Mike Wilkins, "Independent" frequently includes laudatory comments from (playing themselves) Howard, Cassavetes, Ted Demme, Roger Corman, Karen Black, Peter Bogdanovich and Williamson, while numerous hilarious moments from Fineman's movies (Ben Stiller steals the movie as the lead in the climactic scene of "Whale of a Cop") display a great sense of how filmmaking styles have changed.
Recalling "And God Spoke", one of the best bogus docus about movies, along with fictional Hollywood loser comedies like "Mistress", "Independent" has lots of satirical hilarity and characters one grows fond of, and it ultimately touches on truths about the hucksterism at the heart of showbiz.

Film review: 'Gummo'
This is the directorial debut of Harmony Korine, the screenwriter of the controversial "Kids", and it makes that film look like an MGM musical.
A close-up portrait of disaffected youth in Middle America, "Gummo" is, without mincing words, one of the most repellent cinematic efforts in recent memory. Whatever small audiences it attracts -- and they will be drawn mostly by the prospect of watching something "shocking"-- will wind up leaving the theater in a state of disgust.
The largely structureless, seemingly improvised script follows a group of teenagers as they wander aimlessly around a small, tornado-devastated town in Ohio (this is a film guaranteed to make you glad you live in a city), spending their time engaged in such charming activities as torturing cats, getting high by sniffing glue and removing the life support from a dying old woman.
A largely amateur cast portrays the off-putting characters: They include Cole (Max Perlich), who pimps his mentally impaired sister out of their house; Bunny Boy (Jacob Sewell), who skateboards his way around town while half-naked; and Dot (Chloe Sevigny) and Helen (Carisa Bara), two sisters who, when they are not obsessed with their nipples, are attempting to raise their younger sister. The film mainly centers around the adolescent Solomon (Jacob Reynolds) and his older friend Tummler (Nick Sutton), who keep themselves financed by selling the dead cats to a local restaurant. Incidentally, the character of Solomon's mother, who at one point regales us with some grotesque soft shoe dancing, is played by Linda Manz, the former child actress who starred in "Days of Heaven".
Director-screenwriter Korine lacks the maturity or perspective to give these mostly appalling characters any depth, and the series of vignettes he has devised lack any dramatic power or resonance. Unlike the stylistically assured "Kids", which had a certain compelling fascination even when dealing with similarly tough material, "Gummo" seems content to shock merely for shock's sake.
Although the director has rendered his sordid milieu with a degree of seeming authenticity, his palette is so limited that the depiction seems extreme and unbelievable. What he no doubt intends to come across as honest seems mean-spirited and condescending. If there was a society to prevent discrimination against "white trash," they would sue.
