Denzel Washington is rising in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor for Paramount Pictures’ “Gladiator II,” according to our combined predictions. Many pundits are singling him out as the standout performance in Ridley Scott’s latest sequel, as a former slave who plots to be the emperor of Rome. Interestingly enough, the only other actor in Scott’s entire filmography to emerge victorious at the Academy Awards for one of his movies was Russell Crowe (with whom Washington worked with on Scott’s “American Gangster” in 2007) for the original epic 24 years ago. Will Washington follow in Crowe’s footsteps and secure another performance victory for the franchise?
Back in 2000 when the first “Gladiator” premiered, it smashed box office numbers, becoming the second-highest grossing movie of the year, and won five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe. However, Crowe’s triumph was a bit...

When people mention boxing films, the first title that comes to mind is usually Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky. The franchise’s legacy continues to inspire many modern movies, especially in the sports genre, but more than that, it cemented Stallone’s name in the Hollywood industry.

While he did a great job portraying Rocky Balboa, and we salute him for writing the brilliant script, we cannot help but compare his boxing skills with Daniel Day-Lewis. The 1997 movie The Boxer was one of his most unforgettable projects, and it’s easy to see why it remains one of his most outstanding performances ever.
Daniel Day-Lewis Trained Like a Pro Boxer Unlike Sylvester Stallone
Everyone already knows the story why Sylvester Stallone wrote Rocky. He was inspired by the championship match between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner in 1975 and wrote the draft in just three days.

The fundamental principle behind Dwayne Johnson’s rise as one of the biggest WWE wrestlers and movie stars in the world can be summed up in 2 words: “Audience first.” Inside the ring, he listened to his audience, gave them the spectacle they deserved, and elevated the sport to one of the most celebrated in the world. In Hollywood, he did the same.

The 6 ft. 4 in. tall Samoan action figure carved a niche for himself in the movie industry by tapping into a relatively unexplored field of the explosive action genre. The genre that The Rock likes to play with can’t be placed in a similar sandbox as the one where Hans Gruber or Agent Smith like to operate.

In 2002, The Ring did more than just entertain—it left a mark on the collective consciousness, forever changing how we view the horror. As audiences braced themselves for the next jump scare, a little girl named Samara Morgan, with her haunting white dress and long, wet hair, slithered her way into the nightmares of millions. And at the heart of this terror was the actress, Daveigh Chase, whose portrayal of the eerie child was so gripping that, it’s still sending chills down spines today.

Samara wasn’t just a creepy character—she became a horror icon. The real shocker, though, was how the then-12-year-old actress won Best Villain at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards, beating icons like Mike Myers, Colin Farrell, Willem Dafoe, and Daniel Day-Lewis.

10 Celebrities Who Started as Background Actors - Main Image
The journey to stardom is not an easy one. While some celebrities are fortunate enough to be born into the business, others must work tirelessly to climb the ladder of success.
In fact, many of today's most famous stars began their careers as extras in television shows or movies, often just passing by as vague silhouettes in the background—so unrecognizable that you might be surprised to learn they were ever there.
Every actor has a story to tell, many of which come from humble beginnings that can be truly inspiring.
After all, nobody starts at the top, and becoming a great actor doesn’t happen overnight. With that in mind, here are ten celebrities who started as background actors, and their journeys might just surprise you.
1. Brad Pitt
Many may know Brad Pitt as Hollywood royalty, but his journey to stardom began much more modestly.

Although his breakthrough came more than a decade ago through Risky Business (1983), 1984’s Interview with the Vampire still plays a significant role in Tom Cruise’s resume. Embodying the titular vampire Lestat de Lioncourt, he gave one of his best performances to date despite the excruciating pain the preparation of it all had him going through.

Before this, he had already starred in pieces among the likes of Top Gun and Born on the Fourth of July. But while that critical acclamation wasn’t enough to persuade most that he could be the perfect choice for Lestat, what had Neil Jordan convinced about Cruise’s casting was the romantic tragedy of his life – his very fame that had him living his life hidden from the public gaze.

Barry Keoghan has opened up on feeling “sickened” by accusations he’s an absent father, trying to avoid weird acting roles, and that final Saltburn scene, which he insists had “no enhancement.”
The Irishman sat down with beloved British broadcaster Louis Theroux on season three of The Louis Theroux Podcast. The episode with Keoghan, star of The Banshees of Inisherin, The Batman and the upcoming Peaky Blinders film, is available on Spotify beginning Nov. 5.
“I don’t search or seek out roles that have a demeanor of being evil, I just want to show range and get to play different parts with the directors I love,” Keoghan told Theroux. “But yeah, I do want to get away from the weird parts … I’ve started to understand that less is best, you know, people can get really tired of seeing your face and when you look at the actors like Daniel Day-Lewis and Christian Bale,...

Being the Man With No Name in the mid-60s, Clint Eastwood’s era as the lead of the Spaghetti Westerns granted the actor immortal status. With a single Sergio Leone trilogy, Eastwood was able to climb to such an echelon of Hollywood celebrity that the actor is still running strong as a guy behind the lens.

At this point, we all know that for better or for worse, Lady Gaga loves going Method for her roles. She claimed that for her role as Ally in "A Star is Born" — the role that won her an Oscar for best original song thanks to the showstopper "Shallow" — she lived in the role for years. More recently, she changed her singing voice and walked the set of "Joker: Folie á Deux" as Harleen "Lee" Quinzel. In 2022, for the biopic "House of Gucci," Lady Gaga took "the Method," where you fully embody your character even when the cameras are off super seriously, and even spoke in an Italian accent for her role as Patrizia Reggiani. Apparently, she also refused to speak to one of her co-stars as a result of her approach to Patrizia.

Sometimes, to strike the right adversarial or simply awkward dynamic between cast members, you've got to, in the words of The Offspring, keep 'em separated.
Andy Muschietti did this with the kids and Bill Skarsgård while shooting "It," and the young actors responded with genuine terror in their scenes with Pennywise the killer clown. And sometimes the actors remain distant from their co-stars by going method and staying in character throughout the shoot. Daniel Day-Lewis is famous for this, going so far as to speak as Abraham Lincoln when texting with Sally Field during the making of Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln."
Christian Bale is known for going to similar extremes when getting into character. How extreme? Prior to shooting Brad Anderson's 2004 thriller "The Machinist," he dropped a startling 62 pounds to give his character the emaciated look the script called for.

There is simply no arguing with Frank Darabont: the man who brought us The Shawshank Redemption and The Walking Dead, two of the greatest existentially dramatic pieces of film/television in pop culture history. Nominated for 3 Academy Awards, the filmmaker has been behind some of the best (and some of the worst) films in Hollywood simultaneously.

This was really surprising! Did you know Eminem’s name didn’t make the cut on former President Barack Obama’s top five rappers list a few years ago, raising eyebrows and sparking conversations among hip-hop aficionados? While Drake and Chance the Rapper, who both have taken the music world by storm, graced the list, Eminem, despite his undeniable legacy, was absent.

Adrien Brody and Nicole Kidman are back in the Oscars race this year with their respective films “The Brutalist” and “Babygirl” from A24, both already making the rounds in the awards contention with strong festival premieres. The stars are now looking to claim victory in their respective categories of Best Actor and Best Actress, and if that sounds familiar, it’s because they both won these same races 22 years ago for “The Pianist” and “The Hours.” Can they strike gold for the second time and become the first duo in Oscars history to win the lead categories twice in the same years?

Steven Spielberg has been able to call his shot for the vast majority of his career. Ever since he directed "Jaws" in 1975, which was then the highest grossing movie of all time (a record it held for two whole years until the arrival of George Lucas' "Star Wars"), Spielberg hasn't had to work too terribly hard to secure the budgets, talent, and whatever other resources he needs to make whatever it is he wants to make. So it's fair to say that his filmmaking process is radically different than just about everyone else's — Christopher Nolan is probably the only other director who gets to play in Hollywood's sandbox with this kind of financial and creative freedom nowadays.
So while Spielberg possesses a wealth of information when it comes to filmmaking craft, it's important to note that his pointers on how to get a film made in 2024, and what to prioritize,...

Are you not entertained by this year’s exciting and unpredictable Oscar race? Well, you should be because Ridley Scott’s epic and potentially huge blockbuster sequel, “Gladiator II,” has exploded onto the scene following its first screening in Los Angeles in front of an audience of AMPAS and SAG voters.
The long-awaited sequel to best picture winner “Gladiator” (2000) is igniting the spark for Scott, its three-time Oscar-nominated director, to be in the running to win his long-coveted Academy Award. Additionally, his stars Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington are now contenders in their respective acting races.

Sebastian Stan’s embodiment of a young Donald Trump in “The Apprentice” marks the first live action feature film portrayal of the 45th U.S. president (by someone other than himself). Scroll through our photo gallery to find out who presently belongs to that exclusive club.
This list technically includes eight entries, with Anthony Hopkins showing up twice as Richard Nixon (“Nixon”) and John Quincy Adams (“Amistad”). Nixon, who was also played by Frank Langella in “Frost/Nixon,” is one of two presidents mentioned twice here, with the second being Abraham Lincoln.
This group’s ratio of lead to supporting nominations is an even 3:1. As of now, 2013 Best Actor recipient Day-Lewis is the only person who has ever won an Oscar for playing an actual U.

Mark Wahlberg has spent his entire professional life creating a perfect career. Not isolated to a specific genre, the actor has explored all the layers of the film industry. From comedy to action, horror, and even science fiction, he has tried his hand at everything, until coming to a comfortable genre for himself.

Considering this, one can imagine that the early years of his time in Hollywood were full of a lot of experimenting. While some decisions can be the best thing to ever happen to someone, some can force one to completely stray away from something. With this in mind, it is only natural that Wahlberg has had his fair share of regrets.
However, no one would expect that the actor has a changed perspective towards a film that completely changed the trajectory of his career and was even nominated for Oscars.

Journalist Todd Gilchrist spoke to a ton of people involved with the Oscar-winning film and learned, through executive producer Danny DeVito, executive producer Michael Shamberg, and producer Lawrence Bender, that Weinstein really wanted Daniel Day-Lewis to play Vincent Vega, the role that ultimately went to John Travolta. Celebrating its 30th anniversary on Oct. 14, “Pulp Fiction” has left a massive footprint on moviemaking.
Originally conceived as an anthology by writer-director Quentin Tarantino and his longtime friend, collaborator and Video Archives coworker Roger Avary, the film evolved into a funny, violent, endlessly inventive, non-linear odyssey. In addition to reviving the career of John Travolta, minting a star in Samuel L. Jackson and spawning a still-thriving cottage industry of knockoffs and imitation films, “Pulp” earned the 1994 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or, seven Academy Award nominations and one win (for Tarantino and Avary’s screenplay), while its commercial success ($213 million off of an $8.5 million budget) forever changed the economics of independent cinema.
To commemorate the legacy and impact of “Pulp Fiction,” Variety spoke with more than 20 members of the film’s cast and crew to solicit their experiences and recollections. Armed with more than 100 pages of interviews, we’ve elected...

Samson: A Savior Will Rise is an upcoming World War II Holocaust film based on true events, bringing to the screen an inspiring and harrowing tale of faith and survival. The film, adapted from the award-winning novel and screenplay, explores a unique and powerful story set against the backdrop of Auschwitz, one of history’s most brutal concentration camps.
A Story of Courage Amidst Atrocity
The story centers around Samson, a Jewish American middleweight Olympic boxer imprisoned at Auschwitz, where Jewish men were forced to participate in boxing matches for the entertainment of Nazi officials. These matches were no ordinary boxing events—losing meant death in the gas chambers, while winning guaranteed an extra ration of food. However, when the camp’s notorious leaders, including Commandant Rudolf Höss and the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele (the “Angel of Death”), discover that they have an Olympic boxer among the prisoners, the stakes are raised.

Lives of historical figures often get cinematic treatment to tell sweeping tales of real life events, and Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice captures former president Donald Trump in a key moment before the 2024 presidential election. Starring Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Trump’s first wife Ivanka, the film marks the latest in a catalog of films that explore the lives of political people. From United States Presidents to their wives and First Ladies, to Supreme Court Justices to scientists and brilliant minds, nobody is off limits, especially if the stories are triumphant. Others have more tragic endings.

Francis Ford Coppola is not alone in worrying that America could “have an emperor in a few months.”
Martin Scorsese has now weighed in on the 2024 U.S. presidential election, while in Turin accepting the Stella della Mole award at the Italian city’s prestigious Museum of Cinema. And needless to say, he is concerned.
“When we filmed ‘Gangs of New York’ at Cinecittà, we depicted a violent, bloody 19th century America, with a brutal character — Bill the Butcher, played by Daniel Day-Lewis. People like him are showing up again. We don’t know what’s going to happen in a few weeks,” Scorsese said at a press conference at museum October 7. “Democracy could continue, or this experiment could end.”
William Poole, a.k.a. Bill the Butcher, was a real-life gang leader in mid-19th century New York City who advocated for violence against immigrants and advanced anti-Catholic views in the country.

A brutal Oscar season is ahead…in a good way.
As the Oscar race heats up, Hollywood is bracing for an intense, wide-open awards season. After its whirlwind tour through the Venice, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals, A24’s newly acquired historical epic “The Brutalist” has emerged as a potential heavyweight in this year’s Academy Awards lineup. Starring Adrien Brody in a career-redefining role as a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who survives the Holocaust and journeys to the U.S., the film screened in front of an influential audience at CAA on Sunday night. The room was filled with industry professionals, journalists, and Oscar winners like Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”). After the screening, the film’s director, Brady Corbet, and co-writer Mona Fastvold participated in a post-screening Q&a session, giving the audience insight into the seven-year odyssey to bring this project to life.

When news broke that Martin Scorsese’s next two planned films — a Frank Sinatra biopic and a religious drama, “The Life of Jesus” — were being postponed, unfounded rumors started swirling that the great filmmaker was retiring. After all, Scorsese is nearly 82 years old, and may be ready to slow down after working nonstop for over 50 years.
But during an appearance in Turin, Italy on Monday night, Scorsese put those rumors to rest. “I’m not saying goodbye to cinema at all,” he said, per The Hollywood Reporter, during a press conference at the Museum of Cinema, where he’s set to receive the museum’s Stella della Mole award. “I still have more films to make, and I hope God gives me the strength to make them.”

On “Weekend Update,” hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost took jabs at some of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters, like Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis and rapper Diddy.
Che took aim at rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who has been accused of sex trafficking and sexual assault. “It was reported that the U.S. added 245,000 new jobs. Unfortunately, they were all ‘Diddy accuser,’” said Che.
“It was announced that Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs’ sex trafficking case has been assigned to a new judge,” added Che. “[A judge] that Diddy hopes is cool with rapes.” Jost chimed in saying, “It was reported that Diddy once invited Prince Harry and Prince William to one of his parties, but they did not go.”
Jost, poking fun at another member of the royal family’s documented involvement with Jeffrey Epstein, said, “Before Diddy could finish writing the invite, Prince Andrew was there.”
Jost also reported Daniel Day-Lewis’s celebrated return to acting.
