La Regenta is a realist novel by Spanish author Leopoldo Alas y Ureña, also known as Clarín, published in 1884 and 1885.

Adapted from the novel of the same name by Clarín, which narrates the difficulties of Ana Ozores to adapt to the sordidness of life in Vetusta, a provincial city of northern Spain inspired in Oviedo. The young Ana, married to a retired regent, lives oppressed by the provincial hypocrisy and the mystical fears of an absorbing religion. Sexually dissatisfied, beset by constant erotic dreams, she reveals in her confessional her intimate torments, and her confessor begins to feel a morbid passion for her. At the same time, Álvaro Mesía, a Don Juan, intends to seduce Ana.

Asturias (Spain), 1912: Domingo Ordieres and his four sons work tirelessly in the coal mines. When they manage to save, and after the dramatic death of the father and one of the brothers in gallery eight of the mine, they decide to buy a small exploitation of low-quality coal known as The Madman's Mine. With effort and work, little by little they manage to make a small fortune thanks to the export of coal during First World War. But each brother pursues different dreams: Jandro wants to go to Paris, while Pedro is bound and determined to find coal under the sea.

Set in a spa hotel during the Spanish Civil War, Marian is the niece of the proprietress. When her mother dies, her hopes of owning the place are fullfilled. During the revolution in October 1936, her lover Martin joins some revolutionaries who are fighting the Nationalists.

During the first Carlist war, Beatriz, daughter of an Isabeline colonel, secretly marries a Carlist captain who gets killed. Years later she returns to Rubiercos, an Asturian lost hamlet where she left her daughter, to find a troubled village where traditional rural lifestyle is threatened by the emerging coal mining industry and a new way of life darkening the river waters.

A group of Falangist friends dreams of transforming Spain shortly before the Civil War while they are dedicated to spreading their ideas among the population. One of them, López, is about to die shot by firearm, but saves his life and joins the national side. At the end of the war, an old comrade encouraged him to participate in a secret operation to end the maquis of Asturias. Although he is already married and has children, he accepts the proposal and infiltrates the guerrillas.

Ramiro Forteza, a goalkeeper in the Spanish Premier League, is forced by the rigors of the Civil War and the postwar period to earn a living in small villages, challenging the locals to score him a penalty. One night, he arrives in an Asturian village and meets Manuela, a young widow with a son, who survives by sewing for Úrsula, the wife of Andrade, the sergeant of the Civil Guard. But the exhibitions of Forteza and his relationship with Manuela attract the attention of Andrade, who will make a proposal related to the resistance movement that will involve the goalkeeper in the conflict.

We are in 1885. In a ghostly train, the Oviedo Express, the actors that represent the theatrical adaptation of Clarín's 'The Regent' are traveling. The arrival of the comedians to the Asturian capital will alter the daily life of the city. The mayor's wife will fall into the arms of the main actor, and the passions and delusions will surface with all its consequences. A depressed actor, a furious actress, a petulant director, a local journalist, a spirited mother, and an angel roaming the city unleash fun and dramatic events until the abrupt and unexpected fall of the curtain.

After his son dies, an elderly man comes back to Spain from the US and hopes to find out which of his granddaughters is true and which one is bastard.
