To help raise funds needed to appeal her father's case, Bonnie Day opens a tearoom featuring a group of stranded choristers performing a cabaret revue. The father is in prison because of a trumped-up charge made by some stock swindlers. Aunt Pearl would like Bonnie to marry small-town capitalist Napoleon Dobbings, but Bonnie is in love with young lawyer Art Binger. Binger eventually effects a release from prison for Mr. Day just at the height of Bonnie's business career.

Since they discuss this situation while at the ballet, Gustl instead tells the Emperor that he is in love with one of the ballerinas, and the one he has chosen somewhat at random is the always distracted Lisl Gluck, who is considered the worst dancer in the company since she is always staring at the man she intends to marry, the ballet company's piano accompanist Toni Berngruber. When Gustl summons Lisl, she is relieved to learn his true intentions - that she is just a front while he cavorts secretly with the Countess (although he tells her nothing of his impending marriage to the Princess) - but less so when she learns that that requires her to live in his royal house. She agrees when Gustl promises to produce Toni's ballet in return. Although Toni knows nothing about the agreement between Lisl and Gustl, Lisl running off with Gustl does not sit well with him, who believes he can get any woman to replace Lisl. As Lisl and Gustl live their separate lives together, they find they have a fun time together, the other being different than those in their own social class. But an incident between Lisl, Toni and Gustl shows Lisl where her true feeling lie, those which were evident to Gustl much earlier. But can a union of an Archduke and a not so good ballerina work, let alone be sanctioned by the royal house?

Several big game hunters, headed by Major Frederick Brown, scientist and sportsman, travel to Mombasa in Kenya to begin their search for the gorilla. From Mombasa, they travel upriver through mangrove trees that contain oyster beds in their roots. The expedition encounters hippopotami, pythons, crocodiles and small carnivorous fish as well as gnu and giraffes. They hunt rhino, gazelle and elephant. The hunters witness a lion attack and afterward kill several of the animals. The expedition moves into the area around the Congo called French Equatorial Africa, where they encounter the Ubani. The Ubani expand their lips by inserting progressively larger discs into a slit until they are the desired size. Further upriver, they stop at a Kavirondu village. The Kavirondu consider the leopard sacred. The expedition decides to trap a live leopard while they are in the area. The Iturbi forest is inhabited by Pygmy tribes. The Pygmies are extremely knowledgeable about the habits of the gorillas and serve as guides on the expedition. When they arrive in gorilla country, the hunters make their camp beneath Mt. Kilimanjaro. The local tribes believe that the souls of their ancestors inhabit the gorillas. The hunters learn that gorillas build their homes in the trees and that the homes are protected by the male gorillas, who remain at the foot of the tree. The expedition captures a baby gorilla. The next day, the Mambuti try to sacrifice a woman to the gorillas, but the hunters kill a gorilla and his mate and free her.

While searching the South Pacific for a missing aviator, Bob Mitchell and Jimmy Wallace are caught in a typhoon and crack up on an island, escaping unharmed with the aid of beautiful jungle girl Tura, the only inhabitant of the island and believed a goddess by the natives of the adjoining islands. The three are about to leave the island on a makeshift raft when a gang of savage tribesman land, headed by Kuasa, a half-mad potentate who informs them that all whites are his mortal enemies because an Englishwoman once spurned his love and he got his revenge by stealing her daughter--Tura. He had set her up as a goddess but now she must pay for befriending the hated white men by being sacrificed to the crocodiles in an underground temple. An earthquake rocks the island and destroys Kuasa and his band. Bob, Jimmy, and Tura find a party of rescuers waiting on the beach, headed by aviation company president J.C. Martin and his daughter Eleanor, Bob's fiancée. Bob must choose between Tura and Eleanor.
