In return for money and medical aid for his invalid mother, struggling author Robert Sandell agrees to subject himself to experiments by Dr. Lamb, who claims he is trying to extend the human lifespan. Despite warnings from the doctor's wife and a hunchbacked assistant, Robert allows himself to be strapped to an operating table, whereupon he learns the true nature of the surgeon's experiments: To prove the theory of evolution by devolving his human subjects into an approximation of their simian ancestors. However, before Dr. Lamb can proceed, the hunchback un-cages another victim, an ape-man, who crushes Dr. Lamb to death.

Rodney Marvin hears a vague account of a dispute between Mayor Gorham and Matt Hayward from Hayward's daughter, Virginia. She is employed by her father on his paper the Gazette, a sworn enemy to the Mayor. Rodney outwits the Mayor and buys from him a note that would have endangered the fortune of the Gazette. Rodney realizes that the only remedy for the situation is to get the two men to shake hands and be friends. He gets himself a job as partner to Hayward and then in a puzzling series of maneuvers accomplishes his purpose. He almost loses all his friends, including Virginia, in the process, but his final victory makes him a hero In the eyes of all.

Living in Cuba with her parents and grandmother, Inez Hastings, does not care for Lavendera, her persistent suitor. Contrary to her father's wishes, she attends a cockfight and makes the acquaintance of Rush Thompson, a United States revenue officer assigned to track down Cuban bootleggers. Their romance awakens the jealousy of Lavendera, who attempts to kill Rush. Joshua Hastings, Inez' father, who with Lavendera heads the bootlegging operation, sends his daughter to Hiram Proudfoot, his American agent in Massachusetts and leader of the Purity League; Rush and José follow. The latter persuades Inez that Rush suspects her father of smuggling and is using her to spy on him, and she betrays Rush into their hands. When the smugglers are surprised by revenue agents in Boston, José absconds with Rush and Inez aboard his schooner; following a fight between Rush and Lavendera in which the suitor is killed, a sub-chaser arrives in time to save Rush and Inez.

Meg Mackenzie, an orphan, lives with her two stingy bachelor uncles, Donald and Duncan Craig, in a narrow-minded rural community. They plan to marry her to Joe Dobbs, the blacksmith's son, but an author from the city, Stephen Ware, seeking a quiet place to work, arrives in the village and wins Meg's silent worship. The natives regard him with suspicion and accuse him of committing a robbery, and while the uncles are away, Meg saves him from an angry mob. Finding Meg with the injured man, the uncles consider her compromised and insist that he marry her; to save her from disgrace, he consents, telling her he will provide for her until he can have the marriage annulled. In the city, the unwanted bride determines to make herself desirable in the eyes of her husband, and he falls genuinely in love with her.

Society girl Sybil Lawton is left penniless by her father's death, and though her mother wishes her to marry into wealth, her sole ambition is to achieve fame in the theater. Her youthful charm and talent interest producer Stewart Thrall, who finds her a position with an Omaha stock company. Under Sybil's encouragement, fellow actor Jim Roberts, disillusioned by an unhappy marriage, improves and becomes her self-appointed guardian. Sybil returns to New York and begins rehearsals for "Romeo and Juliet" with Thrall as her costar and Roberts as stage manager. Meanwhile, Thrall's unhappy wife obtains a divorce, and Roberts, recognizing her as the woman who ruined his life, blames Thrall and shoots him at a performance as he bends over "Juliet" on her bier. Thrall recovers, however, declares his love for Sybil, and looks forward to happiness with her.

Bill Shannon, an engineer in charge of a dam project in the Sierras, is offered a bribe to sell out to Morse, a Wall Street promoter who wants the dam site for his new railroad. Unable to succeed, Morse arrives at the site with his fiancée, Anne Wilmot, and his sister. There Shannon rescues Anne from a swift mountain stream, and she ultimately wins his affection and adopts his position on the dam controversy. Failing to buy off Shannon, Morse conspires with Charles Burkthaler, a rancher, to dynamite the dam. Overhearing the plot, Anne goes to warn Shannon; but he leaves when he hears her cajoling Morse, who has become jealous of his attentions. Anne discovers the men wiring the explosives, but in severing the wire leading to the dam she is buried beneath rubble from the explosion; following a fight, Shannon settles accounts with Burkthaler and Morse, and Anne is rescued by his men.

Jack Spurlock, a railroad magnate's indolent son, is estranged from Anita Gray, his fiancée, by his refusal to work. He is brought to his senses when his father disowns him. With Anita's financial aid he is able to save his father from ruin and recover his self-respect.

Edmund Kean, the nineteenth century English tragedian, saves a young woman from a fortune-hunting adventurer. He also saves a nobleman's wife from being led astray by the Prince of Wales. When Kean publicly denounces the Prince from the stage, he is exiled to America. The young girl he rescued becomes his wife and sails with him.

John Paul Bart, a presser who has high respect for the favorable impression created by expensive clothes, "borrows" a suit to wear to an exclusive reception. There he attracts the attention of shipping magnate Abraham Nathan, who hires John Paul to handle his company's labor problems. Against great odds and despite Gustavus Sonntag's scheming, John Paul is successful, but he returns to Anton Huber's shop when he is exposed by Sonntag. Nathan, however, finds him and gives him a permanent position, and John Paul then marries Tanya Huber.

Tom Merwin meets Althea Sherrill trekking in the Northwoods, and she accepts his hospitality for the night; a warm friendship develops, and Tom, sensing that she is troubled, promises to protect her and pose as her husband accompanying her home. There Althea reveals that her child's father, Sam Bellows, has followed from Montreal and threatens to turn over an affidavit of the child's birth to her father unless she pays his price: marriage. She is abducted by Bellows, but Tom learns of her predicament and trails them with a score of woodsmen and dogs. Althea's faithful dogs attack and kill Bellows, and the papers proving that Althea's mother is the mother of the illegitimate child are destroyed by Merwin, who is thereafter united with Althea.

Impressed by cowboy Ned Underwood's rescue of a drowning child, Rose Dale is pleased to find herself on the same westward-bound train with Ned. She relates her purpose of investigating reports of rustling at her ranch, and he offers to take a dishwashing job on her ranch and find out who is responsible. Rose's foreman, who wants her ranch for himself, tries to scare her away, then takes more drastic measures. To rescue Rose, who has been locked in a cabin with a bear, Ned wrestles with the animal, lassoes an airplane, climbs up the rope, and tosses the villain out of the airplane.

Billy Clifford, who has served a sentence in reform school for devoted friend Talbot, later in life becomes a successful gambler. He meets and falls in love with Helen Morely, daughter of the mayor. His partner, advised that the mayor intends to raid his establishment, kidnaps Helen and holds her prisoner as security against the raid. Clifford rescues her as the police arrive but is forced to shoot his partner. Helen's reputation is saved, but Clifford is arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment on a murder charge. An interested friend, however, visits the governor, who intervenes in Clifford's behalf, and following their mutual recognition as childhood friends, Clifford is pardoned by Governor Talbot and wins Helen's love.

After 20 years of married life, Densie Plummer feels unappreciated by her family and decides to open her own business. Her newfound independence causes strife with her husband and children.

Capt. Alaric Lewin and his bride Chum are sent to Key Island, off the coast of Africa, where he has been commissioned as assistant to Gregory of the British Service. Chum determines to vamp the commissioner and thereby win a better post for her husband, and her husband finds favor in the eyes of Diana Churton, whose husband is away on an expedition. Instead of carrying out orders to send Lewin to Malta, Gregory puts him in charge of a dangerous jungle expedition, but Chum, learning of his treachery, forces him at gunpoint to organize a search party. Alaric is found delirious from fever, the party is attacked by natives, and Gregory is killed. Alaric, reunited with his wife, is given his orders to Malta.

Boxcar Simmons, a hobo, arrives in a small town and announces that he is a millionaire who has been missing for some time and now he's come back home. The townspeople take him at his word--especially two local con artists who scheme to fleece "the millionaire" of everything he's got. Boxcar, however, has a scheme of his own in store for the pair.
