Banned for over a decade for its outspoken criticism of the post-WWII communist regime in Hungary, Péter Bacsó's 'The Witness' has since then achieved unparalleled cult status in its native land. Known as the best satire about communism, 'The Witness' has become a cult classic, which was also well received by critics and general audiences alike when it was finally released outside of Hungary. Its candid and realistic portrayal of the incompetent communist regime has earned great acclaim for both the director and the film itself when it was shown at Cannes Film Festival in 1981. 'The Witness' takes place during the height of the Rákosi Era, which was closely modeled after the ruthless and brutal Stalin regime. The film follows the life of an ordinary dike keeper, József Pelikán, who has been caught for illegally slaughtering his pig, Dezsõ. Instead of doing hard time for his "heinous" crime, Pelikán is elevated into an important position, generally reserved for the communist elite. Of course, Pelikán is utterly clueless about his newfound luck, not to mention his new job. Even his new benefactor, the mysterious Comrade Virág, is reluctant to reveal the real reason behind Pelikán's preferential treatment. Thus, begins Pelikán's hilarious adventure deep within the "sophisticated" communist society. One failure after another the incompetent Pelikán is elevated higher and higher on the communist echelon, all the while remaining completely clueless about his promotions. Until one day, when he gets called for to return the "favour" by falsely testifying against his long-time friend in a mock-up show trial.

Péter and Lajos are both broke playboys. Lajos tries to win over a Mexican soap opera tycoon, the widow Dulcinea de la Rosa, to be his wife. The two men cross paths when they both fall in love with starlet Ibolya.

However, not a single moment in the film suggests the sublimity of this historical moment; on the contrary, the burlesque fuzziness of the moments on the screen satirize the arrogant theatrics of the political upstarts. The film turns, with a mocking gesture, to the unapproachable, profane, everyday mystery of political donkey. The scene is a run-down, food-smelling apartment block pub called the Stork and its immediate surroundings. Insecure, down-and-out existences live here: unemployed and casual laborers, grocers and taxi drivers, warm spirited swindlers and casual lovers. They are ugly and mean, soft spirited and quick-tempered. They're all nice rascals.

Tamás is a young, Budapest-based director of video clips and commercials who dreams of directing his first feature film with the title 'The Guilty City'. He has already written the script but does not have the means of financing his project. Thus when he surprisingly gets an email from American film producer Alex Brubeck who writes that he had liked the script and would like to meet him personally, Tamás sees all his dreams come true. With the help of his two brothers Ákos, a successful manager and sex maniac, and András, a poet and complete loser, he tries to make a good impression on the American and persuade him to finance the film project. This film tells the story of a few uneventful days in the life of six pals. Lali, a great fan of America, owns a sandwich stand on the side of the road, called The Glass Tiger. Gaben talks Lali into buying an old Chevrolet Impala, the real American dream. After the long escapade of getting the car, Lali doesn't even get the chance to try the Chevvy out, because a truck completely demolishes it. Fox in the meantime is looking excitedly for the "Wreck", what he has been trying to sell for big money. But Lali has sold what he thought to be scrap, not good for anything. Fox is threatened by some tough guys to bring it back or pay up. He has to get money at all costs. Coco can think of only one solution. They have to rob the nearby bank. They all get into a car, but the big heist does not work out perfectly.

The Tót family resides in Northern Hungary. The couple has a daughter and a son, the latter a member of the armed forces. When his weary major is ordered to take a vacation, the son talks him into a visit to his family home. Comedy endues when the Tót's go overboard trying to make things pleasant for the visiting major in hopes of an easier life for their son the soldier.

He loses one of them. Andris and Roland two guys in their twenties trying to make a living as DJs. Andris is a composer too, his first work is about to be published by a foreign company. Roland is envious that is why he is trying to cross Andris everytime. They are preparing for a weekend party, where both of them play. Roland wants to play some fresh stuff, but he just cannot find it anywhere. Andris is trying to help. Zoli doesnt really like to go outside, he is a bit like all of us. All he wants is to finally write out the demons from himself. Everytime he is to start, the phone starts to ring, someone knock ont he door, the tea is ready, or he has to go to the post Lego, Erika, Galkó and Zsani the branch is going to a party, they meet the tram stop. They all fantasize about drugs and uncontrolled sex. They are uninhibited, they know no limits. They want to have the city, but it has them as well. They have to pay a huge price for their freedom.

After a mass-collision in the morning rush, people from different backgrounds are forced to directly interact with each other.
