He was ordered by the Soviet Military Intelligence service to collect the evidence of existence of a Mujahideen training center operated by CIA. Having completed this life-threatening task, Nikitin finds a group of Russian prisoners of war, one of whom is his friend Mikhail, the son of his commander General Kolesov, who has been listed as missing in action for several years. Nikitin decides to stay and to rescue the condemned. He inspires the soldiers to regain hope and to start a riot against the armed to the teeth armed at all points Mujahideen.

However, as it turns out, the caravan is a large heavily guarded vehicle with a well-armed escort. Realising that the mission is doomed to fail before it has begun, Okovalkov decides to let the caravan pass and then return to his unit, but his plans are ruined when a young and inexperienced soldier suddenly opens fire. A fight ensues during which most of the Soviet squad is killed. With only seven survivors and no radio contact, Okovalkov's real ordeal begins when he is forced to march his injured men over 45 kilometres back to base.

The Mujahed dies that night. The dead body is discovered the next day and the shepherd arrested. His family decides to flee to Pakistan. Completely disheartened and destitute, they reach the refugee camp on the other side of the border after days of walking through desert and rocky areas. The family can't get their bearings. They are uprooted. The younger sister is grabbed in the open street and bartered off to a wealthy merchant.
