He gets injured and crippled while working, but is compensated adequately by his employer, Bawaji. Years later his sons have grown up. While Ramesh has married Sudha and works with a bank; Chander is wooing Renu, the only daughter of wealthy Seth Laxminarayan. When Avtaar and Radha wish to go on a tirathyatra (pilgrimage), they ask Ramesh to book tickets for them, but he tells them that he has no money. When Radha gets sick, their servant, Sewak, enters Sudha's room to get some money for her treatment, as a result Radha does get treatment, but Sudha blames them for stealing her money. Avtaar asks Ramesh and his wife to get out, only to find out that the house is now in Sudha's name. AVtaar, Radha and Sewak move out and live in a shanty hut. Their hopes are with Chander, who does well in his exams, decides to marry Renu, and moves out without financially assisting his parents. Now Avtaar and Radha are elderly and dependent on Sewak, and the question remains will they resign themselves to this existence, if not, what possibly can a crippled older male accomplish, especially at this time in his life?

Malati (Rati Agnihotri), a young girl from a middle-class family meets Suresh Ray (Mithun Chakraborty), who is the son of a well-known lawyer Dayashankar Ray (Danny Denzongpa). After dating each other for some time, she finds that she is pregnant. When Suresh refuses to marry Malati, and she decides against aborting the baby, her parents throw her out and disown her. Left alone, she decides to take Suresh to court. She is supported in this fight by Shakuntala (Rekha), a lawyer who works for woman's rights, who also has an illegitimate daughter from Dayashankar Ray. The case gets much publicity and public support, and the judge rules in Malati's favor. At this point however, Malati refuses to marry Suresh and decides to raise the child on her own. In the meantime, Shakuntala dies of a heart attack, and Malati promises her to take care of her daughter, and carry on Shakuntala's work. Years later Suresh and his wife (Ranjeeta), now married for some years and still childless, run into Malati again. It turns out that she has been raising her son all by herself, and he has turned out to be a very talented and well-adjusted young and smart boy.

Shyam and Kamal are two school-going students who are close friends. When Kamal is unable to pay his exam fees, Shyam assists him, and as a result Kamal does well, is able to study further, becomes an IPS Officer, and is subsequently hired as the Superintendent of Police in Delhi, while Shyam re-locates to live in Bombay. Years later, Shyam has taken to crime in a big way and is now known as Rajeshwar. He kills a politician, S.M. Dayal, who had molested and killed, Geeta, his betrothed, but the Police are unable to find evidence to arrest him. They request Kamal to intervene and arrest Rajeshwar, and as a result, Kamal, along with his wife, Shashi, and sister, Sudha, re-locate to Bombay. Kamal finds out that Rajeshwar is none other than Shyam, but does eventually arrest him for abducting and sexually molesting Shama. Shyam believes that the charges against him are false and trusts Kamal fully. But the Court finds Shyam guilty, and sentences him to seven years in jail. Betrayed and upset with Kamal, an embittered and vengeful Shyam is discharged from prison after his sentence, determined to molest Sudha and make Kamal's life a nightmare.

Deep in the Punjab Village live two brothers, Madan Lal (Navin Nischol) and Suraj (Raj Babbar). Madan is married to Sheela (Kiron Kher), and Suraj is in love with Kiran (Priti Sapru). Both get married, but this doesn't go down well with local bad boy Shibu (Mohan Baggad), who also likes Kiran. He gets beat up by Madan once and vows to take revenge one day. Kiran gives birth to a lovely baby boy, but instantly Suraj gives him up to her Bhabhi Sheela as his elder brother and bhabhi are childless. At first this doesn't go down well with Kiran, but later she understands. Shibu now wants revenge so he goes all around the village trying to spread false rumours about Suraj and his bhabhi having an affair. He also convinces the local Panchayat, but Sheela proves them all wrong in front of Devi Maa and proves her own innocence. Suraj captures Shibu and brings him to Sheela, but she and the whole village say sorry to Sheela, and all ends well.

Wealthy industrialist Amrish Rai and his wife welcome their U.S. returned son, Vikram alias Vicky back to India. They would like him to get married to a beautiful young woman named Nisha, but Vicky is interested in another young woman, whose name is Annie, and is the daughter of an employee of Rai Industries named David. Then the youngsters go on an overnight picnic with several other college friends, miss their transportation, and end up in the clutches of two truck-drivers - from whom they escape and fall in a pit meant to trap large animals. They are rescued by an elderly woman, only to find themselves abducted by a group of female bandits. The leader of this band, feels sorry for the young lovers, and let's them go - and they try to make their way home - only to find that Amrish has appealed in the newspapers that he will reward anyone with information on Vicky with one lakh rupees. This creates a furore in the community, and the young lovers are on the run from several mobs. The youngsters do make it home in one piece. When Amrish finds out about Vicky's love for Annie, he is enraged and dismisses David from work, only to re-hire him back after the workers, together with Vicky, go on an indefinite strike, until Amrish relents and re-hires David. But Amrish makes it quite clear that this does not mean that he will let his only son marry the daughter of a mere employee - under any circumstance. On the other hand David, who is intimidated by the Rai family, instructs his daughter never to see Vicky again. Looks like this is the end of the line for the young heartbroken lovers.

Widower Pratap Singh lives a wealthy lifestyle along with two married sons, Randhir and Ranvir. While Ranvir's wife continues to be childless, Randhir has a daughter, and his wife is expecting a second child. Pratap wants Randhir to invest the family's gold and jewelry, which are hidden underneath the Mandir of Bhagwan Shri Shivji, in a foreign country, but Randhir refuses, arguments ensue, Randhir moves out, and starts his own business, a coal mine. Shortly thereafter, there is an accident in the mines, over 300 miners are killed. The Police arrest Randhir, he is tried in Court, found guilty, and sentenced to 20 years in prison. After his term ends, he is discharged and will soon find out that his wife and father are dead, his second child is missing believed to be dead, a prostitute has taken over the identity of his daughter, and a hoodlum, Shiva, is waiting to kill him.

Mohan Verma meets with attractive Devi and falls in love with her. His parents would prefer that he marry Anita, but he refuses to do so. He proposes his love for Devi, but Devi rejects, and even humiliates him. When Devi comes to know that Mohan really loves her with his heart and soul, she repents, and accepts Mohan's proposal for marriage. The marriage is set to take place within a few days, and preparations are on. Then Devi's brother, Nandlal, comes across a secret about Mohan's life, and puts a stop to this marriage. Devi finds out that her brother is behind this, and tells Mohan, and they plan to get married in secret. That night Mohan does not show up, and Devi is devastated. Fearing that he may have been involved in an accident, she contacts him and finds out that he was out with another woman, a woman named Laila.
