Brave Girls

What's more valuable than a cow, pig, horse, etc. in rural or poor urban settings? A long list, but not on that list is being a female. Filmed in the village of Dholka, India (a few hundred miles north of Mumbai) we follow a small school committed to giving girls of varying ages, most with not completed schooling, an education. Specifically we follow a few who have to balance community, and family pressure to just marry. Like many tradition based poorly educated areas of the world education is not as valuable to a family as marriage and thus sons (if they're fortunate). After marriage a girl is expected to go directly to her husband's home where she is usually not allowed to go outside. Marriages are often arranged within extended families, i.e. between cousins. One line from mother to daughter about to be married, "If you can support me financially then I will feel like you are my son." Girls are shunned by family & community if they opt for a love based (vs. arranged) marriage. Would have liked to have seen more of how dangerously severe the ostracizing families/communities can be toward a girl who wants to follow her own dreams.
