"The Hunger" is a porno example of The Peter Principle, that concept applied to business management back in the 1970s which you don't hear invoked much anymore. The late Al Goldstein had his "Peter Meter", by which he graded the merits of porn videos on the basis of whether they got the viewer hard watching them, but here we have Axel Braun, head of Wicked Pictures in its current decline, promoting his long-time editor Claudia Ross to the director's chair (she also produced, edited and did art direction for this junker), a prime example of Laurence Peter's satirical notion that employees tend to eventually rise to a level of incompetence, being promoted on the basis of success in prior positions.
Braun takes the writing credit here, quite laughably in that the two hours-plus feature has minimal dialogue (plus star Emma Hix's voiceover narration revealing her "hunger" for sex beyond her marriage to complacent hubby James Avalon) and a one-note plot of her random sexual adventures. Designed to fit Wicked's recent 4-part features spread over four weeks of dropping segments on the website (as opposed to the label's former success making movies for VHS and later DVD release), "The Hunger" devolves into four gonzo, mechanical sex scenes with brief filler in between. Add in a most annoying gimmick of Hix looking at the camera conspiratorially at the end of each weekly segment.
Avalon, one of Adult Cinema's greatest directors all-time, doubles as director of photography, and the dim-lit visuals of most of the sex scenes may be gritty or "artistic" but are hardly what current porn fans want to watch. Hix, who unfortunately has had much work done on her formerly natural beauty, is a very boring heroine, and even wears a pair of those see-through high-heeled shoes favored by hookers and strippers throughout, more than a hint of the current Wicked low-budget approach. Male cast is poor, with Tommy Pistol and Lucky Fate as tattooists (loaded with their own tattoos) who give Hix the double-penetration treatment at their salon, Cherry Kiss wasted in a threesome with Hix and gonzo stud Victor Ray in a cluttered hardware store (how erotic!?) and Ruby Moon as a young girl Emma picks up for lesbo action while cruising crummy neighborhoods at night. Jay Romero at first is unrecognizable with a hip new hair style playing Avalon's son for de rigeur faux incest action with stepmom Hix in the final reel.
