Needless to say that I had not heard about this 2020 movie titled "Sleek Rat and Royal Cat" prior to sitting down to watch it here in 2023. But with it being an Asian movie that I hadn't already seen, nor actually heard about, of course I opted to sit down and watch it.
However, writer Yuenian Su put together a scramled, cluttered and downright mess of a storyline and script for director Francis Nam to bring to the screen. The storyline was all over the place, and it felt very random, and that made for a less than mediocre viewing experience. And it didn't help much that the equally confusing character gallery was one-dimensional and had some of the most cringeworthy dialogue to deliver.
I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble on the screen. But I do believe they had a fair enough cast of talents, just a shame that the actors and actresses virtually and literally had nothing to work with in terms of proper script, character gallery and dialogue.
Visually then "Sleek Rat and Royal Cat" was actually a fair enough movie. Not the best of special effects I've seen in a Chinese movie, but they were good enough.
The confusing construction of the narrative and the incredibly slow pacing of the movie just made it a struggle to sit through the movie. And I have to admit that I gave up after 45 minutes of boredom and sheer torture. Then I just tossed the towel in the ring and called it quits. And believe you me, when I say that I am never returning to attempt to finish watching director Francis Nam's movie. Nor is "Sleek Rat and Royal Cat" a movie that I will recommend to fans of the Asian cinema.
My rating of "Sleek Rat and Royal Cat" lands on a three out of ten stars.
