I'm an Englishman who, as yet, speaks little Greek with confidence. However, this was the movie, with English sub-titles, which, a little more than a year ago, introduced me to Aliki. So far I have only nine of her movies and I'll reserve judgment on just how good I think it is, at least in relation to the other movies I have seen so far. Nonetheless, I defy anyone not to be moved by the theatre scene where the audience join her in singing, 'Iparche nanta ena tragoudi'. Movies like Ipolohagos Natassa and To Taxidi show how good Aliki must have been on stage and in serious drama. Even so, it wasn't until I saw Aliki in 'Mantalena' that I was, and remain, truly captivated. Aliki singing, 'Thalassa platia' is surely one of the most beautiful scenes in the cinema and her rapport with Panteli Zervo SO moving. Aliki's movies and songs should be recognised as a Greek national treasure and a respectful visit to her grave a must for any visit to Athens. So, if you haven't started GET COLLECTING. Start with Ipolohagos Natassa, Mantalena, Astero, To Pio Lambro or Aliki sto Naftiko (for a rollicking good laugh) and To Taxidi. I promise you that Aliki will become a permanent part of the crystal of your self in a way that few actors can.
