An unknown film now this was quite successful in the late forties, early fifties. I have sadly only seem 1h 2m of it as I bought a copy at that length only. I have no idea if the film was cut by a third in America, because I do know the full version was shown in UK cinemas first with an X certificate in 1951 then given an A certificate in 1953. This can quite clearly be seen on the BBFC website. It is a film which is good, well filmed and acted and deserves to be restored in full. But the biggest mystery of all is who cut it and why, as I have seen no explanation for this at all. But I do not want to put viewers off seeing the shortened version, as what remains still has tremendous power. I only give it 5 because for obvious reasons I do not know what happens in the scenes somewhere on a cutting room floor.
