This book isn't as deep as Brooks' other books. The writing is high-quality, peppered with many historical and personal anecdotes and quotes, but it comes across as pedantic academia. For example, he describes a woman who had just lost her young daughter in a tsunami:

Beautifully written coverage of a challenging subject. The week I finished this, the stabbing in Southport, England occurred and the subsequent misinformation about the perpetrator being an immigrant, which led to senseless attacks on immigrants in the area. The difficulties and the history which Diya Abdo covers are ongoing, unfortunately. I highly recommend her author interview with NC Humanities on youtube. (North Carolina libraries chose her
