Souls Trilogy #1

Her Soul to Take

Rate this book
Leon I earned my reputation among magicians for a reason: one wrong move and you're dead. Killer, they called me, and killing is what I'm best at. Except her. The one I was supposed to take, the one I should have killed - I didn't. The cult that once controlled me wants her, and I'm not about to lose my new toy to them.

Rae I've always believed in the supernatural. Hunting for ghosts is my passion, but summoning a demon was never part of the plan. Monsters are roaming the woods, and something ancient - something evil - is waking up and calling my name. I don't know who I can trust, or how deep this darkness goes. All I know is my one shot at survival is the demon stalking me, and he doesn't just want my body - he wants my soul.

Her Soul to Take is book 1 in the Souls Trilogy. Each book within the Souls Trilogy is interconnected, following a different couple through a similar timeline in the fictional world of Abelaum.

Slayed. SLAYED I TELL YOU. The vibes I felt from this book were the same vibes I get from watching the vampire diaries or the originals but darker. DRAMA, darkness, and small town witchy stuff. HERE. FOR. IT. I was hooked. Check tw.

sometimes true love is a goth bimbo velma lookalike and her hot demon boyfriend who is totally trying to steal her soul

it was hot, the mcs were bi, the plot was sorta interesting/fun and leon (demon boy) could get my soul among other things 😌

3.5 stars

cons:
too long
repetitive as hell
ending felt too easy and anticlimactic
leon did not feel as powerful and scary as he kept claiming he was 🥴
also I didn’t buy the whole they’re in love thing, sure they were hot together but there was only like one scene of genuine conversation between them that wasn’t flirtatious banter or dirty talk so I don’t buy it fully

“I’d fight death as long as I could if it meant giving her more time to run.”

I CANT LIE AT THE START I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO HATE THIS BECAUSE I DIDNT READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS AND AFTER SOME OF YOUR REVIEWS I THOUGHT THIS WAS GOING TO BE A SMUT FEST SO I THOUGHT ID HAVE TO SKIP THE WHOLE BOOK BUT I WAS WRONG THANKS TO MY GORGEOUS BESTIE JENNIE I KNEW WHERE TO SKIP THE PLOT WAS FANTASTIC I LOVED IT IT GAVE MAJOR CONJURING VIBES AND LEON I LOVE YOU 😭😍

“Offer me your soul in exchange for protection.”

Raelynn moves to back to Abelaum a small town where she grew up a small town filled with secrets mystery and murder. Rae craves darkness and films YouTube videos of paranormal occurrences and what better way to get content than to get footage of a creepy church that’s been abandoned for years. Her plans come to a staggering halt when Leon the guard at school the guard she has a slight crush on the guard who’s a prick isn’t who she thinks he is . Leon is a demon summoned from hell who’s speciality is killing now your probably thinking crap she’s fucked it can’t get worse but oh boy it does .Leon tells her that as part of some messed up ritual to wake up a sleeping god she is the next human sacrifice and in-exchange for protection he wants one thing … her SOUL (he could have asked for anything a flipping chocolate bar doesn’t sound too bad but no he asks for her soul💀)

Raelynn

“I was mostly helpless, and maybe I really was just a goddamn liability, but I wasn’t a coward.”

How can I put this into words I love her and hate her at the same time. Rae was soo funny and sarcastic her comebacks were amazing she didn’t take shit from anyone but she was sooooo dumb like the decisions she made had me wanting to strangle the day lights out of her I GUESS I HATE HER 💀😭

“I’d fucked up. I’d really fucked up. Why did I ever think I could control a demon? Why did I think I could make that work? Some chalk and a Google search didn’t make me a magician — but it sure as hell might make me a corpse.”

1. Leon tells her to stay inside as there was an Eld (beast) outside what does she do ??? she goes outside with a bat a bat like what part of stay inside do you not get 😭😭
2. Leon tells her to stay away from the Hadleigh’s what does she do ?? goes to their party and gets drugged
3. Tells her to give him the grimoire well you guessed it she DOESNT GIVE IT and it gets stolen 💀😭😭

The list can go onnnn like girl I get it you do what you want we love strong women and hate doormats but please use your brain when a demon tells you it’s not safe then it’s not safe being a doormat would have saved her all the crap she went through. Heyy maybe the author was just trying to portray how humans make stupids mistakes I guess we’ll never know 😭😂😂😂

Leon

“I’ll catch you again, don’t worry. You can’t get away.”

HE LOVES CATS HE LOVES CATS 😫🥹

Leon has my heart how can a demon be soo fricking cute FULLY OBSESSED. He is the perfect amount of protective possessive and sarcastic.His vulnerability and how he was scared of falling in love was adorable the way that the only thing he wanted was freedom broke meeee. He was soo funny that it hurt every word that came out of his mouth had me choking on air😭😂😂

“WHAT THE FUCK, RAELYNN!”
“I wasn’t going to kill her.
I wasn’t going to kill her, goddamn it.
But, oh, I was going to make her fucking regret this.”

My favourite part had to be the part where Rae binded Leon to a binding circle like don’t get me wrong it broke my heart but the adrenaline that i got from that one scene will last me a life time my heart rate was through the roof I was soo scared for her because he lost his shit and rightfully soo because the one thing Leon hated was not having freedom and he trusted Rae and he was literally injured because of her so he let his guard down and thought it was safe for him to stay over at Rae’s only to be betrayed by someone who he’d sacrifice everything for

“Callum growled at my suggestion, an angry dog worried over his bone. It was a silly thing to suggest anyway: Everly had clearly already given him her soul. Souls weren’t able to be offered in parcels, it was all or nothing.
Everly wrapped her hand around his arm, and his growling stopped.”

Erm how cute are Everly and Callum I need their book come on a witch and an arch-demon POWER COUPLE. The way callum was already possessive and protective over Everly tells me I’m going to LOVE THEIR BOOK but the growling erm … he’s a demon so maybe that’s why he’s doing that 😭💀

Spoilers ahead ⚠️⚠️⚠️

“ It had been love.
Love when he came back to be sure my house was protected.
Love when he watched me as a silent guard.
Love when he turned over his freedom, his name, to me.
Love when he disappeared into the dark, even though he was afraid, even though he didn’t think he would come back.”

The fact that Leon stayed with Rae and protected her even after he found the grimour bearing in mind She hadnt taken the deal of giving her soul meant everything. Taking her soul for Leon was important because demons possessed and he wanted Rae to stay immortal with him forever. The fact that he stayed showed how much affection he had towards Rae as he hated earth because of all the torture and captivity he faced due to the hadelighs HOW CAN WE NOT LOVE LEON

“I knew.
I should have said a better good-bye. I’d wanted to fight longer for her.
But at least I’d told her. At least I’d admitted the thing that scared me most. The Reaper didn’t seem half as frightening in comparison to my last confession: that I loved her. That I’d die for her.”

My heart broke when Leon was beaten by a reaper and all he cared about was Rae’s safety. He was dying and despite the fact that he couldn’t speak or move when he saw Jeremiah he managed to push up off the ground and tried to fight him like get this man a medal

“My soul is yours to take, Leon,” I whispered. “If you’re still alive...if you can hear me...it’s yours.”

Rae why couldn’t you have given your soul at the start you can’t live without Leon and want him stay around to protect you but won’t take the deal he’s offering. I can’t lie the part where she did give her soul to him was everything I can’t believe I’d ever be supporting that but hey it’s fictional MY INNER MUSLIM IS SCREAMING . I’m just happy Leon got what he wanted because I’d totally die for Leon he was PERFECTION

Spoilers end here ⚠️⚠️⚠️

Thank you to my beautiful love Jennie I couldn’t have imagined reading this with anyone else the way we both cried and laughed and not to forget got frustrated made this read amazing

To end on a lighter note here are some of my favourite funny quotes because LEONS HUMOUR IS UNMATCHED :

“I’m guessing a video of a demon going viral would piss off Hell’s PR department?”

“Do something?” He shot me a narrow-eyed glare, and said mockingly, “Oh Leon, do something! Save me, please, oh please! What happened to Be gone, demon? What happened to trying to bash my head in with a crucifix?”

“Don’t you fucking dare try to piss them off for a video.”

“So you really can learn magic from Google,” I muttered

“Rae made me want to be...nice...to her Only to her. Everyone else could get fucked.”

ONE LAST THING LEON IF I HEAR YOU CALL RAE BABY GIRL 1 MORE TIME IM GOING TO RIP YOUR THROAT OUT💀🤢

“You’re a light in the dark, and I’ve been in the dark a very long time.”

Started off my spooky season with Leon, and it most definitely did not disappoint. I went into this not sure how I would feel, but I ate this up. This book absolutely slayed!

Her Soul to Take is the first book in the Souls Trilogy. It is an enemies to lovers, age gap, touch her and die dark romance with drama, dirty talk, banter, and a balance between the plot and smut. I didn't expect to be laughing aloud while reading this, but there definitely were a couple of times, and I was at work making my coworker look at me questioningly. I couldn't help it, though, because Leon's mocking lines just did it to me.

Raelynn Lawson returned back to her childhood hometown Abelaum and was staying at her parents' cabin to attend college and be independent. Her first night there, she was helping her best friend Inaya at her bookstore and clumsily found a book that was a grimoire. Her friend told her to keep it since she's into the supernatural between going on ghost hunts to having her own YouTube channel. She goes to the old abandoned church to film, hoping for some paranormal activity. But what she was not expecting was to summon Leon, who is a demon that happens to be the guard from school and is known for killing. Leon's master tells him to bring Rae to him to be sacrificed, and he refuses. Leon tells Rae that she is wanted as the next scarifice to awaken a god, and he offers to protect her from the monsters that lurk in the dark. But the one thing that he wants in return for protecting her is her soul. Will she give in and give him her soul?

“All the time you’ve spent playing in the dark— is this what you were waiting for? For some evil thing to come take you?”

There were some side characters that I loved and some that I hated. Let's start with the ones that I hated. There was Victoria and Jeremiah Hadleigh who were so fake and only befriended Rae because they needed her for the sacrifice. I liked Inaya, but she was so blind to what was going on with Rae, but I guess that was partly Rae's fault with not telling her best friend what was going on. I also enjoyed Zane, a friend of Leon's who is also a demon and Juniper (the one he claimed), the sacrifice that got away. We didn't see much of Juniper, but I have a feeling from her small appearance that I'm going to love her. I loved Everly and Callum, though we didn't see much of them and can't wait for their book!

“I want you. Irrevocably. But I can’t settle for less than all of you. Body and soul, Raelynn. We demons, when we see something we like, we need to possess it. It’s in our nature.”

“You should know that I love you, for whatever that’s worth. Stay alive. Don’t waste that mortal life.”

What I was not expecting was the chemistry between Leon and Rae because it was absolutely unquestionable. These two were made for each other and would do anything for one another. I loved Leon and his sarcastic, protective, and possessive self. I didn't like Rae but also loved her at the same time. The things that made me dislike her was that she just didn't listen and put herself in danger. The one instance that stands out is that Leon tells her to stay inside while he goes to rescue her cat, and she just had to go outside, putting herself in possible danger. And you guys, when Leon saved her cat because he loves them, had me swooning. My one and only dislike about Leon was him calling Rae baby girl, please don't.

“My soul is yours to take, Leon,” I whispered. “If you’re still alive...if you can hear me...it’s yours.”

This was my first book by Harley Laroux, and it won't be last. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this. My heart broke for Leon near the end, but I won't disclose why, so you will have to read it, but before you do, be sure to check the triggers. I'm running to read the next book because I love a good revenge story.

~~~~~~
Starting off my spooky season with Leon 🖤 Please don't disappoint 🤞
Rae Lynn was so DUMB and exasperating that I was actually rooting for her to get shot in the head. Like— what the fuck is not clicking, queen? Everything, apparently.
Choosing to look the other way and let Jesus take the wheel after you’ve just been explicitly informed that you’re currently being roofied because said drink tastes good and you don’t want to stop drinking it is honestly iconic behavior. I mean, wow.
“Despite the anxiety shooting off alarm bells in my head, I gulped down a mouthful…”
“‘You need to stop drinking that, babe.’
But the thing was, I didn’t want to stop drinking. Whatever Jeremiah had made me was good…”
“…they were good hosts, even if they were secretly plotting to kill me.”
…she thought that in earnest.
I’m—
SHE THOUGHT THAT IN EARNEST.
They were both clowns. Leon is out here making impassioned monologues, claiming he’ll rip Heaven and Hell and Earth apart before he lets anything happen to Rae Lynn… and then… things… keep repeatedly… happening to her.
We got the stupidest human of the bunch and the stupidest demon of the bunch falling in love. Why don’t you both just stop talking. Just let us enjoy y’all looking hot, don’t ruin it by speaking or doing anything. Our fictional Megan Fox and MGK.
Her Soul To Take is a full-length standalone.
I swear, each time the author writes a book, she proceeds her previous work. This book is like no PNR I have ever read. Ever. Add erotica on top it. Now I know what some are thinking it's over the top. I am here to tell you it's not. The author's vivid imagination and her writing talent give you the perfect balance of the two. This book is delicious, and I see a reread in my future.
My review will be vague. You will see no spoilers. All I will say is read your trigger warning and don't take it lightly. It's not a really dark book, meaning it's not black; on my dark scale, it's a medium gray to gray. The warning is more of the kinks involved in this book.
Rae returns to live in her birthplace after her parents move to Spain. She dabbles as a paranormal investigator while attending college. Where she first runs into Leon, who is in human disguise and working as a security officer. Leon is instantly attracted to her. And Rae is very much intrigued by Leon. She goes looking into somethings she just shouldn't, and she gets herself into some trouble, and that is an understatement.
Rae is what I love to see in a heroine. A strong, independent woman, not ashamed of her sexuality and far from a damsel in distress. Plus, she knows how to ask for help and stands by that person. Leon is the perfect Demon. He pushes Rae's limits and knows when to back off. His comebacks are the best. So sarcastic.
“I can’t just keep severed heads around my yard,” I said.  “Oh, I’m sorry.” Leon turned to face me. “Do they not fit your aesthetic? Would death suit your aesthetic better?”
That was mild compared to his other comebacks
I was all over the place in this book. I went from saying, “ You in danger, girl” (sound familiar ? ) to “I freaking love Leon. “ I just couldn’t get enough and wanted to cry when the book was over. The plot and character growth are astronomical. Parts of this book remind me of Stephen King's early work. And the steam is out of this world—one thousand out of five.
Maybe I should put you over that table and spank your ass until it’s a nice, bright, cherry red. Maybe I should make you hold your own panties in your mouth while I do, to keep you quiet. Maybe…” He was so close, his lips brushed my ear, his voice a whisper that slithered into my head and wrapped around my brain. “I should make you spread your legs while I spank you, so I can see just how wet you get every time I leave another mark on your skin.”
I can’t wait for the next book in the series and see who and what it is about. If you like PNR and erotica, Her Soul To Take is for you.
"Living forever isn't so terribly important."
"What's important then?"
"Freedom."
Ending the year with a light read 😇
In case that wasn't clear, I'm being sarcastic, because this was every bit of fucked up as I was promised it'd be.
Fifty Shades who, said this book, then put poor Christian Grey on its kness for a spanking session worthy of its name.
Holy moly, Harley Laroux. I'll have to send you a fruit basket, sometime in the future, for the service you've done to this community.
And by community I mean me. And by service I mean I HAVE SINNED.
Her Soul To Take is so filled with dirty and dark stuff I found myself shrugging and nodding (and also panting a little) at the craziest stuff that happened y the end of it.
You've got a kink? Raelynn and Leon are here for you with their piercings and giant dildos. You don't feel represented enough as a bisexual person? Scoot over, pour yourself some wine and let Daddy Laroux introduce you to two of the sexiest bi disasters this fictional world has to offer.
Can you tell I had fun?
I also had one of the worst episodes of insomnia last night, which means I had some time on my hands and basically devoured this.
And here's the funniest part.
I may have picked this book up for the smut, but I totally stayed for the plot. I know, right??? I definitely didn't expect this to be so entertaining and bone-chilling as it was.
I was totally absorbed into the story and was kept on the edge of my seat for the entire night.
It gave off The Hollow Gods vibes, which is another book I totally loved; the whole small town eerie halo, the cult of fanatics, the freaking mystery. It was better than a movie, and Laroux wrote it so well I almost didn't care about the kinkiest sex I've ever read about.
(Although it was indeed the dirtiest stuff I've ever encountered in a book. And I'm not complaining, mind it.)
On the other hand, I found the dialogues to be a bit stiff at times, and it took me at least 200 pages to finally get into it properly.
I also couldn't seem to notice this seems to have mild anti-religious tones, but I suppose that's to expect on a book where sin personified is one of the main characters.
Raelynn and Leon's chemistry is on another level. I wasn't fully convinced by their romance, at first, but once they started becoming friends, it was undeniable that these two are made for each other and would do anything to keep the other from suffering.
And they would also do anything to each other, if we had to be 100% precise.
Please, remember to read this book only if you've got a very open mind (basically spread out) and if you're not sensitive about certain topics.
In case you're like me and aren't easily impressionable and collect kinks like they're Pokemon cards, this can't miss in your collection.
“All the time you've spent playing in the dark — is this what you were waiting for?”
this was the best romance i've read... in years. it can be a bit darker at times, so please make sure you check out the authors warnings below, but this book just completely worked for me. i loved the main characters, i loved the set up, i loved the queer rep, i loved the steamy scenes, i loved the spooky setting, i truly just loved it all. i cant wait to read everything by this author now.
Content Warnings from the author:
This book contains graphic sexual scenes, violence, kink/fetish content, horror elements, and depictions of hard kink/edgeplay. This book is strictly fictional and is not meant to represent realistic expectations of BDSM or kink.
Kinks/Fetishes Within: consensual non-consent (CNC), breathe play/choking, bloodplay, spit, needle play (body modification fetish), pain play, fear play, public play, bondage, restraint, spanking/impact play.
other cw/tw i found while reading:
captivity, enslavement, death, murder, human sacrifice, self harm to get blood for magic, needles, mention of insects, mention of cannibalism in past, anxiety depiction, trauma depiction, gore blood depiction, drugging, vomiting, scenes that i believe could be trigging for claustrophobia, torture, and cults.
This book was everything i needed to get me out of my slump honestly it was beyond perfection, the characters, the plot, the twist and the writing was absolutely perfect and i loved every single second of it. Although it took me ages to complete this as i said i was in a freaking slump. Tbh harley laroux can write her grocery list and I'd still devour it!!! This book legit altered my brain chemistry and left me longing for more.
The book's central theme revolves around a paranormal cult deeply entrenched in rituals involving sacrifices, bloodshed, and a gruesome quest for increased divine power. At the heart of it all is the female main character, destined to be the ultimate sacrifice to further elevate the god's already formidable might. In exchange for her very soul, the male main character emerges as her guardian, setting the stage for a dark and compelling narrative.
➳ 𝙍𝙖𝙚𝙡𝙮𝙣𝙣 𝙇𝙖𝙬𝙨𝙤𝙣
Although i found her quite annoying at some of times m̶o̶s̶t̶ o̶f̶ t̶i̶m̶e̶s̶ but she was kind of badass and bold even but idk why she kept getting into trouble and making things worse than it already was. She was funny and witty at times but also an idiot for creating irrelevant chaos.
I loved how she never took anyone's shit but honestly when a demon who loves you so bad tells you to go inside and buckle up and stay safe bitch you don't go out with the bat thinking you'd save yourself from a fucking beast with just a baseball bat. i mean what do you think you are; you're literally a mortal who can get crushed in a single second and yet decide to keep this bravado. I know some people would find this badass but i found it pretty reckless. I felt she needed a little more of a character development.
➳ 𝙇𝙚𝙤𝙣
This blonde, drop-dead sexy, and unapologetically grumpy demon? My heart's been swiped, and he's the culprit. He's the poster child for perfection - you name it, he's got it!!
➳ 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚?? Oh he is sooo protective of rae like my man literally was ready to lose a limb for his girl and did everything and anything he could to save her.
➳ 𝙊𝙗𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙙?? He was soo downright obsessed with her that he used to stand outside her door so she could sleep sound and safe. Is that enough nooo??
➳ 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙨?? I mean what do you want more he's such a green flag ik ik he's demon who's really hot but can you imagine a demon loving a cat. Like he legit fought an eld so he could save rae's cat because she loved it.
I loved everything about this man but the thing loved the most was his filthy mouth omgg the nasty things he said had me fanning myself. Like in that graveyard scene i legit had to keep my book down and internally scream.
Overall if you're seeking a book that will undoubtedly keep you awake at night, leaving you utterly captivated by a charismatic demon whose provocative charm knows no bounds, then this is an absolute must-read.
I'm feeling some major Halloween vibes right now so all I want to read are gothic romances and vampires, and HER SOUL TO TAKE was, like, exactly what I needed in this moment to scratch the itch. Not only is it a deliciously smutty story about a demon with a degradation kink, it's also darkly atmospheric, with cults, demons, eldritch horrors, sacrifices, creepy small towns, and cannibalism. Wooooo.
I actually don't have too much to say about this one, to be honest, mostly because I think it's best to go in cold (unless you need to review the trigger warnings). For a horror romance, it's pretty lite on the actual horrors; I think the biggest triggers are probably the degradation scenes and the nipple piercing. The romance itself is actually pretty sweet once it gets rolling and the banter is top-tier, even as it shifts from enemies to lovers. Loved Rae's alt girl blogger vibe and the shenanigans Leon got up to with his fork tongue. The cemetery "dining" scene will be living rent-free in my head for a while. Also, there's a chubby kitty named Cheesecake that lives.
Can't wait to read more of their work.
Maaaaaan I’m so sad I’ve finished it😭
This was such a fun read! I didn’t expect this at all.
The writing style, dual pov, an intriguing plot line and the right amount of smut was just on point. A whole page turner.
It was filthy af and I loved it. I’ve learnt new things about myself..I won’t elaborate any further. But let me tell you that demons are my new kink.
Also, apparently I like pnr genre now. Definitely reading the rest of the series. Even though I will be missing my man Leon as the main character🤧 He can put that split tongue down my throat, I don’t mind.
Could do without the whole “baby girl” though..
Spooky month read #3
3.75 out of 5 stars!
I'm gonna need to read this book again in the future.
Alright, here's my first review:
Her Soul to Take is a captivating exploration of desire, power, and the darker sides of human nature. Laroux weaves a gripping narrative that blends elements of romance and suspense, immersing readers in a world where moral boundaries blur and the stakes are incredibly high.
The story follows Rae, who is drawn into a tumultuous relationship that challenges her understanding of love and sacrifice. Laroux’s writing is both lyrical and intense, creating an atmosphere that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The characters are richly developed, with their motivations laid bare in a way that is both unsettling and intriguing.
What sets this book apart is Laroux's fearless approach to taboo themes. She delves into complex emotions and situations, pushing readers to confront their own perceptions of right and wrong. The pacing is relentless, with twists and turns that ensure you’ll be turning pages long into the night.
However, it’s worth noting that the book does contain mature themes that may not be suitable for all readers. Laroux doesn’t shy away from graphic content, which serves to enhance the story's emotional weight but might not appeal to everyone.
Overall, Her Soul to Take is a thought-provoking read that challenges the conventional notions of love and morality. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy dark romance and psychological depth. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore the complexities of the human psyche wrapped in a thrilling narrative.
I cannot believe that I convinced myself to read this book. Will pick this up as soon as I'm finished with my current reads. Also, even though I had this book in my tbr for a few years, this was recommended to me not too long ago.
Should I be excited or scared? *DUN DUN DUUUNNNNN*
Leon withdrew his fingers, and I leaned back heavily against the wall in the afterglow. I had no words that would suffice for the rush of that experience: the frantic pleasure, the fear of being caught, the disbelief at what I was doing. Without my noticing, Leon had taken my vape from my pocket, and he held it up to my lips as he also held up his slick fingers to the streetlight’s glow. They glistened as I took a slow, light-headed drag from the pen.
“Beautiful,” he said softly. He put one finger into his mouth, and sucked it clean as I exhaled. The smoke swirled around his face as Zane came to his side.
“That was fucking gorgeous,” he said, slinging an arm around Leon’s shoulder and looking me hungrily up and down. Then Leon held up his middle finger, still glistening, and Zane took it slowly into his mouth, licking it clean.
“Always the middle finger,” Zane muttered, straightening his jacket as he licked his lips.
“For you? Always.” Leon stepped away, looking me over as I buttoned my jeans with clumsy fingers. He held out my vape. “Thanks for playing. See you on campus, doll.” He gave me a two-finger salute, and he and Zane left the alley side by side, chuckling as they went.
It's about time I wrote a review for this one. This was probably the book that really cemented my love for Harley Laroux's books. They're all so intense, hot but also sweet and squeal-worthy. This book is definitely in need of a reread <3
➥ Rae (h) was not my favourite fmc that HL has written. Since I'm writing this review after I've read The Dare and Her Soul for Revenge, I think Rae is my least favourite. She doesn't have that fun brattiness that Jess does, nor is she as hot and badass as Juniper. She made some silly decisions and wasn't as engaging with Leon as I would have liked her to be. I think it's more fun when both mcs are on very even playing field (like in Her Soul for Revenge). That's the main critique of mine that lowered my rating by 0.5 stars. But other than that, I loved (nearly) everything else.
➥ Leon (H) is so hot woah. He's definitely one of my top book bfs and even tops Zane from the second book. He's so protective but funny and sweet inside. He's just everything. Probably the best example of an "I hate everyone but you" man. And although I complained about Rae's damsel complex, I must say, I absolutely loved it every time he had to save her hehe. The only thing that broke my heart was the use of "baby girl". It began around the 75% mark and it killed me because it would have been perfect without it. It's down to personal preference of course, but I can't help but cringe every time I hear it. It's like I can actually hear Massimo saying it 😭 "bebigorl".
“I’d gladly admit I was generally a dick, but Rae made me want to be...nice...to her. Only to her. Everyone else could get fucked.”
Honestly, this book exceeded all my expectations. I was never once bored; both the romance, smut, and plot had me very entertained. Leon, as mentioned, is just delectable and a reminder to me that hot men exist. Sometimes dark romance love interests are too cringey to me because they're always yelling and barking which makes me unable to take them seriously, but Leon is all cool and calm, that's how he maintains his power and it's hot af. The sex scenes were so unique and well-written. I really do recommend this for anyone who's looking to get into dark romance. I love how, although this is dark romance, HL still makes it so that the act is always consensual and both characters can always use their safeword.
“The ache of looking at her was almost too much, the sweetest pain in my chest as I brushed her hair back from her face before turning to leave her. Love. What an odd thing.”
As my last little complaint, I'd probably critique that if the characters are separated, we deserve a sex scene when they're back together again. I loved the drama, the stakes, the requiring all of it, but a little bit more steam towards the end would've been nice. Especially something nice and tender since they were in looove then hehe. Maybe in future, I'd like a threesome scene... maybe between Leon, Zane and Rae or (even better) Juniper, Leon and Rae. There was just so much chemistry in that one moment at the beginning... (the featured quote lolol). Leon could slap me any day, bye.
After dnfing this back in 2021 I decided to give it another try. This time round I chose to listen to the audio book—it wasn’t the strongest audio book I’ve listened too but neither was the story. It was meh for me. I didn’t dislike it but I wasn’t blown away by it. Was it perfect for spooky szn? Yes. Am I going to read the rest of the series? Yes.
The only warning I needed for this book was that he was going to call her “baby girl” as a term of endearment. Gross.
Two other important points of information:
1. The BDSM relationship IS consensual.
Both are into it. This isn’t a Christian Grey type of thing. No one needs convincing. All parties are on board.
2. The cat survives the book.
Nothing makes me jump ship on a book or movie faster than when I learn the main character has a pet. It rarely ends well (for the pet…and me). But, this time it did. Brave cat named Cheesecake lives a long, happy life. All I can really ask for in a story, tbh.
Dnf @77.8%
Yeah. Am in the super small minority with this one. I didn't like it. I think this is my first dnf for a paranormal book. I just can't even make myself pick up this book just to finish it and I was so close. Rae ruined the book for me, I can't stand the girl. She got on my nerves from the start and wouldn't stop. I really tried to like it but just couldn't. Not even Leon's split tongue could do it for me.
If you’re looking for a monster/horror romance, this is a great read! Very unexpected but I loved the gothic vibes, the intensity, and of course the STEAM. It gets kinky here so make sure to check the CWs in the blurb. We’ve got a demon who’s supposed to kill the heroine, but finds that he can’t do it. He chooses to help her and keep her safe instead, all the while making all her dark, twisted sexual fantasies come to life. He’s got some anatomy that made for an interesting read 👀 I liked the heroine too, though I wish she was able to do more when it came to protecting herself. Still, this book is an incredibly entertaining read and I’m hoping the other two books in the series will be about the teased couples!
The spice scenes were really good and the interactions between Rae and Leon were sexually charged... but Rae found a way to annoy me at every turn lol. She never once made a rational, well-thought-out decision.
Demon dog things are chasing me and my demon guard says to stay inside? Well, I have a baseball bat so I should be fine.
The only supernatural being telling me to stay away from this killer cult that wants to sacrifice me to a God? Well, the daughter invited me to brunch and gave me cupcakes so they can't be all bad.
BINDING THE ONLY DEMON THAT'S SUPPOSED TO PROTECT YOU FROM THE THING IN THE WOODS OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE TO THE COUCH DEFINITELY INSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE? That's okay. He's a nice demon who obviously has the hots for me so blackmailing him into the circle will be fine.
I could always count on her to make the wrong decision. It was like a clock that started ticking every time a new problem or situation came up. On that note, it kind of just blew my mind that Leon even still wanted to bone the girl. She's the epitome of dead weight. The summoning circle she created to conjure him in the first place was absolute shit and she did it for a YOUTUBE VIDEO. One of the worst reasons I've ever read to get a demon to come out and play. She's the person in the horror movie that I would want to die first but always ends up surviving until the middle.
4.5 Take-My-Fucking-Soul and Call-Me-Baby-Girl Stars
Oh my God... What a ride!
I'm not gonna lie... I didn't knew what to expect when my friends convinced me to read this book.
If you look into my read books, you won't find any paranormal romance, or paranormal books at all.
It's not my gem, and it's okay... There are books for everyone out in the world.
That said, I FUCKING loved Leon, aka The Demon! 😂😂😂😈😈😈
The story started slowly, building the scenery and the characters and I wasn't too impressed... I was like: okay, that's it? All that fuss just for a gothic girl in a city controlled by a cult with a slaved demon? Yeah... Boooo!
That was until around 30%.
Oh boy... How I loved to be wrong!
After a few ongoings, the book catch up in a fast pace, full of action, sex, suspense, sex, chase, blood, sex and tears. (Did I mentioned sex? Because holy cow... The man can fuck! And I'm not even talking about that tongue 🥵🔥)
I loved how the author build up Leon's personality, and how he was such a grumpy protector of Rae, and girllllll... Rae was a full plate to be carried!
She was a little annoying at first and the girl couldn't help herself in anyway at all! She was always putting herself in danger and seeking the type of situations that makes you the first death in a horror movie...
Lucky girl to have such a hot and protector demon on her team!
Leon suffered like hell to keep her alive!
I'm kinda of obsessed with all demons in this book, they're truly way better than the humans here...
Leon, Zane and Callum can have my soul and body (specially body 🥵) anytime they want!
I loved the way she finished their story, even if it took forever to Rae grow some balls! 😂😂😂
I would have melted for Leon at the first Are you fucking lost? 🥵🔥😈
I cannot wait for my other babies books!
Bring it on my Zane and my Callum!
Highly recommend it!
Her Soul to Take combines horror, paranormal romance, and supernatural suspense in book one of the Souls Trilogy. Leon is known best for killing, except he didn’t kill Rae. The group that once controlled him wants her, but he doesn’t want to lose his new toy. Rae has moved back to her home town to attend college. She’s always believed in the supernatural. With monsters roaming the woods and something evil waking up and calling her name, who can she trust? Is her stalker her only hope for survival?
The atmosphere and world-building in this novel were fantastic. The premise sounded promising, but it didn’t meet my expectations. Instant attraction and the need for each other become quickly apparent and is acted upon repeatedly. There are plenty of spicy and graphic scenes.
Unfortunately, I was unable to connect with the characters in his novel. Rae took too many chances and made a lot of risky choices that didn’t make sense. Leon kept calling her baby girl and this felt creepy and demeaning. The characters felt flat with personality traits that didn’t change. Rae constantly needed saving and wasn’t very likeable. The plot had potential, but important events sometimes took a backseat or felt like they took place in the background. The ending provided sufficient closure.
Overall, this novel failed to meet my expectations. Perhaps, I wasn’t the target audience for it. However, the world-building was terrific. This is an outlier opinion and many reviewers enjoyed the novel.
Kensington Publishing provided a complimentary physical copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date was April 10, 2021.
4.5 stars (check the author's synopsis for TWs)
When I started this book, the beginning was definitely slow. It took me about two days to get through just 30%, but once the paranormal aspects of this book really started to come into play, I could not get enough of this story. I loved Leon and Rae's relationship and how Leon started falling more and more for Rae. She definitely didn't make some very smart decisions (trusting people she obviously shouldn't), but Leon couldn't help but protect her from the evils of the world. Then, when things started to get crazy, I didn't know how/if they were going to make it out alive and I could not stop reading. I was so addicted to the romance and loved how Leon was a demon who was supposed to kill Rae for a sacrifice but ended up falling for her instead. I'm already dying for book two and cannot wait to see who that book will be about!
