An adorable missed chance romance with a pinch of smut thrown in for good measure. Elliot Fletcher nicely marries romance, smut and small town drama in a union that is thoughtful, emotional and enjoyable.
April Sinclair and Malcolm Macabe certainly have their personality flaws and the burdens that come with daily life with a little extra due to family. Fletcher blends the heartbreaking with the heartwarming and then sprinkles just the right blend of spice throughout their story. The author does a good job of building the tension not only between the characters but also with the small town of Kinleith and the outside world. Don't worry, the smut doesn't really start until almost the end - but it's good. Look, you can't have a romanctical relationship with somone without sex (in most cases) so expecting to read a romance without sex? Well, that's called Christian Romance - this is not that.
There is a foundation of "reality" that culminates in the Disney romance we've been spoon fed to measure everything. Whilst I did find April's occupation to be a little too convenient and easy to the story, I appreciate that it didn't overwhelm/overshadow everything and everyone. Malcolm is an interesting character as he is much portrayed as a gentle, grumpy giant that is extremely introverted and agoraphobic. He's deeply affected by his childhood troubles (cleft palate) and his father's inability to emote appropriately.
The polarity of these two characters makes for entertaining and frustrating dialogue and situations that you can't stop reading! I flew through these almost 400 pages thanks to the short chapters (why can't more books do this?), witty conversations, ridiculously hilarious interactions with various people and animals and the heartache of some truths behind a lot of misunder-standings. I highly recommend if you are looking for a quick read to get you out of a slump or just to change up your current reads.
