Can the books in this series be read as standalones? Or should they be read in order?

Or should they be read in order?"I think it's probably best if you read them in order Emmy, as nearly all the friends and side characters introduced in the first book make appearances in the second and third. I think if you read it as standalone you might get confused with so many of them popping up. Hope you enjoy them. :)
