Incredible & touching story about Iran and women in Iran. It reminded me of My Brilliant Friend in some ways - the nuanced and beautiful - but sometimes very difficult - relationship between 2 friends, from age 7 through their lives. The story sheds important light on the oppression of women in Iran but in a very approachable way. It would have been a 5 for me but I didn’t love the writing all the time. I highly recommend this book - I couldn’t put it down and read it in 3 days....more

The story, imo, is ultimately about a “mid-life coming of age.” Great writing and unique. Highlights on perimenopause, absent from most books, was done in a refreshing and non-irritating way. Though I don’t think you need to be a middle aged woman to enough this book, it certainly made it more poignant....more

I found the characters whinny and fairly annoying. Their cross yo bear (no pun intended as they are Jewish) was that they were wealthy and therefore lacked the urgency for ambition. I had to skim over parts because I was outright bored. I guess I was interested enough to finish, but barely. ...more
