Is there an equation for the perfect hookup? Turns out it’s a lot more complicated than one plus one. . . .

Numbers are my comfort zone, which explains why my sex life is a big fat zero. Then again, if I’m smart enough to earn a PhD, why can’t I calculate a way to get a guy into bed, just to see what all the fuss is about? With my prima donna sister, Bella, getting married in Maine, I figure her wedding is the perfect opportunity for my little experiment. And Cain Jordan seems hot enough—he’s certainly drunk enough—to show me what I’ve been missing. Judging by the body of evidence, it’s a lot. . . .

Being stuck in the same town as my lying SOB twin brother, Christian—who may or may not be the father of the son I’m not allowed to see—is a hell of a reason to drink myself silly after the lobster boat docks each day. Any port in a storm. . . . But Sophie’s different. She doesn’t play around. And she’s becoming a habit I don’t want to break. Because the smartest woman I’ve ever met is also the sexiest—and the only one who makes me want to change.

Don’t miss Bella and Christian’s story in The Breakup!

Cain, the hero, was all sorts of disgusting and I genuinely could not root for him and Sophie, the heroine, could have done so much better.

The Hookup, by Erin McCarthy, is the 1st book in her new "Jordan Brothers" series.
Sophie is a math major working towards her PhD. She is determined to hookup with a stranger for one night to lose her virginity. Cain is a lobster fisherman who drowns his sorrows nightly at the local bar.
While out celebrating her sister's upcoming wedding Cain spots Sophie, not your average girl, and the hookup begins. However, once the sparks start to fly a one night stand becomes impossible.
A hot, fun and very entertaining book that I couldn't put down.

I was really interested in The Hook Up. Granted, when it first started, I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it but, as the story went on, I couldn't stop reading it. I wasn't sure where it was going to go, how things would work out between Cain and Sophie or if it was possible that I was reading a story that wouldn't have a happy ending but was sure hoping that I would.

Cain was an interesting character. A drunk with a deep-seeded hatred of his twin brother. Betrayed and living his life on his own, he goes from work to the bar to bed … either alone or with whatever warm body he could find. Then he sees her … but she blows him off and introduces him to her sister. Well, he'll go with it. Until she opens her mouth and he's hook, line and sinker, all in.

Sophie was a hoot. I actually laughed with some of the things that came out of her mouth. She is OCD and extremely blunt. The woman does not know how to filter, she is brutally honest and says exactly what is on her mind. From being up front about being a virgin, to practicing blow jobs with a banana, she just put it out there. But, there was something about the way Cain accepted her for who she was instead of criticizing her and treating her like some teenager, like her family does. She's falling in love but knows that it can never work when Cain loves his whiskey, loves drowning his sorrows more than living his life to the fullest.

Yes, this story was full of drama. From Cain's personal drama, to Bella's drama, there was a lot. But, there were the fun and sexy times as well. Lot's of sexy times that were both hot and hilarious. I loved that Sophie accepted Cain for who he was as well … that she didn't try to change him, listened to him but didn't try to convince him to do something he wasn't ready for. They were sweet together, even when he was 10 sheets to the wind. They were something that you don't see much in stories any more … open and honest. The ending … wow. Yea, I got my HEA and I couldn't have been happier with the way Erin McCarthy wrote it. So … crisp, fun characters, an unusual story line and an ending that I loved. But Cain, when you take Sophie to her first baseball game in Boston please make it a Red Sox/Yankee game … her first one should be the biggest rivalry in all of baseball!

The Hookup was such a heartfelt, emotional, and intelligent book and a fantastic start to a series. Sophie and Cain are such unique characters and the dynamics between them and their families is so intriguing that I can't wait to dive in to their world again. Sophie was one of my favorite female leads to date - she is so different from the typical romance heroine and it is utterly refreshing. Erin McCarthy's method of dual POV, first person storytelling was utilized uniquely and superbly and kept the plot moving at a pace that made the book a real page turner. I love how real the story was; we don't get a straight forward HEA because the characters are portrayed as real, fallible people and as such, have issues to overcome. I love how that was addressed and not just glossed over because sometimes the premise that love conquers all is just not enough. 5 out of 5 wine glasses.

The hookup is quick and cute romance, but deals with addiction which is a serious subject. Bella and Sophie decide to go out so Sophie could have a hook up.
Sophie is highly intelligent, but her fashion sense is nil so her sister Bella decided to do her hair and makeup. So in a skin tight dress, high fluffed up, and false lashes. So feeling really uncomfortable she goes to the bar where this hottie called Cain is sitting at the bar. Cain is trying to drown his sorrows after a problem with his twin brother and girlfriend.
Something clicked and Sophie goes back to Cain’s for a hookup. Normally Cain is only a hook up kind of guy, but something is different with Sophie. Sophie is painfully honest and always herself, and she feel a real connection with Cain and likes him as he is.
As a couple I really liked them together, and now I’m waiting for Bella’s story.

I enjoyed this story for the most part. I really liked Sophie, the quirky heroine who blows into Cain's life. I wasn't as taken with Cain by the end of the story, which was a shame as far as I'm concerned. He had the potential to be a great hero, but there was a scene towards the end of the book that ruined it for me. The first half of the book is a solid 4.5 stars, but I found the story went a little off the rails and that disappointed me. I hope we get to revisit these characters when (if?) we get Bella's story.

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I haven't read an Erin McCarthy book in such a long time so I was really excited when I saw she had a new series coming out.  The Jordan Brothers follows two brothers falling for two sisters.  The brothers (twins!!!) have some heavy past issues to overcome and the sisters couldn't be more different from each other.

We start off with Sophie and Cain.  Cain is in a very dark and bad place in his life.  This was brought on by said issues with his brother and he doesn't really care about anything other than working and drinking himself into a stupor afterwards.  I liked how real and raw he felt, especially those low moments.  In the middle of that he sees Sophie first as a way to past the time.  But she's so different than everyone he knows that he can't resist the pull for more.

These two are definitely opposites attract.  Sophie is very analytical, brutally honest and incredibly smart.  She has never given that much importance to the things others live for.  Like social interactions, friendships, physical connection, love.  I was surprisingly able to connect with her and found her endearing.

THE HOOKUP has a more new adult feel than I usually like and some parts can be a little too much drama to handle.  But I still thought it was a cute read and I have to read the next one to see how these brothers will get over their problems.

The Hookup by Erin McCarthy is book One in The Jordan Brothers series. This is the story of Sophie and Cain.
Cain has a block on his shoulder that he isn't letting it go and it is somewhat do to his brother. This upset has him just working, drinking and sleep with or without someone. Cain knows that he is an alcoholic but doesn't have plans to change anything.
Sophie is a smart (genius) 25 year old virgin that doesn't have real social skills and boarders on OCD. Sophie is in town because her beautiful older sister is getting married. Her sister dresses her up and takes her to a bar to help her with her social skills and Sophie thinks to use the to loose her virginity.
Sophie immediately spots Cain at the bar but he only has eyes for her sister until he learns she getting married. Cain isn't to taken with Sophie at first but the longer he talks to her he finds her adorable and hard to resit.
This was a really great read! It almost impossible to put down. Just loved it!

I liked this romance between Cain and Sophie. For Cain's faults, he was the only one that saw past Sophie's quirks and OCD. He liked her for who she was and was always there with a compliment to prove to her that she was just as pretty and special as her sister.

I would have liked a bit more of a development of what happened between Cain and Christian. That fallout was the reason for Cain's downfall, so it would have been great to have that detail.

Its been years since I’ve read a McCarthy book. I was excited to read this and it was pretty good. Sophie is awesome. I love how she has no filter and just tells you like it is. Now Cain, oy he has a chip the size of Texas on his shoulders. He’s bitter and angry at his twin brother and drowns his emotions in alcohol. But underneath all of that, it’s touching how much he cares for Sophie. I wish there was an epilogue, but I know there’s another book coming about his twin brother so hopefully we’ll get to see more of these two.

4- Stars!

This was not what I was expecting to read when I first picked up this book up.
I was expecting a light, fun, breezy hook-up story which I totally based my opinion upon from the cute cover.

THIS story actually knocked my socks off!

The main male protagonist, Cain carries a lot of anger and has a lot of issues, the main one being that he turns to alcohol to numb his feelings.
Cain admits and accepts that he's an alcoholic and as the story progresses, the reader can sympathize with the reasons 'why' he drinks.
The author did a fantastic job of writing his character. She did not sugar-coat his alcoholism or how it affects his loved ones.

The female protagonist, Sophie is a genius who is socially awkward. She doesn't read normal social cues, and is brutally, and logically honest in all her responses.
Unfortunately, she's never felt or been made to feel accepted by her family or amongst her peers.

Somehow Cain and Sophie's characters click.
They understand, accept, and are honest with each other, and what started out as a hook-up/fling soon becomes so much more.

Even though this wasn't at all what I was expecting, I am glad I read this story.

I adored this story! I loved how different the characters were and how the story kept me on my toes until the very end! The only down fall was how abrupt the ending was, wish we were given a little more. I can’t see what to happen in the next book with Christian and Bella.

The Hookup is a captivating blend of poignancy, humor and romance that delivers a powerful emotional punch. Sophie and Cain are opposites in almost every way imaginable when they meet at a bar and decide to have a one-night stand. She is an even-keeled, Harvard-educated math genius, who is quirky and a little socially awkward, and he’s a hardworking, small-town lobster fisherman and bitter, angry alcoholic, who has been deeply wounded by his twin brother and ex-girlfriend. They don’t sound like they should work together, but Sophie and Cain really work. They have an easy, deep connection with insane chemistry, and they find peace and understanding with each other. Their evolution as a couple is tender and steamy, and it’s heartrending and inspiring to witness Cain’s journey out of the brutal grip of addiction. The Hookup truly has it all and is a deeply satisfying romance. This might be my favorite Erin McCarthy book.

Erin McCarthy, an New York Times bestselling author, gives us the The Hookup, book one in the Jordan Brothers series. YES, there will be more Jordan men, insert happy dance.

I just love the fact that both these characters are flawed in the most realistic way. Sophia with her safe zone and her OCD qualities. Cain drinking himself away. This is so well written that you are "hooked" from the beginning. The story just keeps flowing right on smoothly till it is over. Two different personailities that seem to have instant chemistry that becomes explosive.

Sophia is all about the numbers, there is a solution to everything, but she spends so much time working towards her PhD, that she forgets about having a love life. Up in Maine for her sisters wedding, she decided to do a little experiment and walking into the bar that first night..Cain seems to be the perfect man for the job.

Cain is stuck in life. His twin brother, Christain is not who everyone thinks he is. Not knowing if the son that Christian is raising is his or not. So drinking at the bar has become his life. One night in walks a tourist and there is no playing around with her, she is different and possibly the one who makes him want to change.

One thing I would like to point out as an example of how well written this book is, is that Sophia has accepted herself. She knows her quirks and how they might upset people but she is still doing her own thing, at times it may be hard but she keeps going. That is a life lesson for everyone.

I actually really enjoyed this book - but it was touch and go there for a few parts when Cain just completely screwed up my opinion of him. I mean it's kind of hard to like an alcoholic who doesn't even attempt to give it up when it means he'll have something good in his life and then gets drunk and hurts those around him that he loves. But I get that it's a disease and it's not easy to overcome. Luckily, by the end, he gets things under control and starts getting his life back. So I forgave his bitterness and hate/rage that he exhibited at times.

Now, I absolutely loved and adored Sophie. She was the female version of Sheldon Cooper and was just adorable in her quirky and serious ways. She was very literal and by the book about everything, even sex. But the typical virgin story was revamped in this one and you couldn't help but love Sophie and be invested in her journey to 'becoming a woman.'

I even found it believable that Cain and Sophie were a couple - they just meshed really well and understood each other. Because of Sophie's scientific mind, she could see the problem with alcohol that Cain was having, but she knew that it wasn't something that he could just change like that, it was a disease that he had to work through. And surprisingly, the lobster fisherman Cain understood Sophie and all of her quirks. It was cute to see them together. I was really rooting for them, but then Cain goes and screws things up and hurts Sophie. She goes back to her life, but eventually he gets his life together and makes changes that bring them back together.

On top of Cain/Sophie's story, we get the added drama of Cain and his identical twin brother Christian and the fact that one of them is the father of Camp, but they don't know who. So Cain resents his brother since he slept with Cain's then girlfriend. It was just a big mess, but apparently there's more to that story than we thought, but we don't find out in this one since Cain didn't want to hear it. But then again, we also don't hear more about whatever happened between Bella, Sophie's sister who was supposed to be getting married, and Christian. I'm looking forward to their book to see what in the world went on during this book that we didn't know about.

Overall, a great read that was very emotional as we watched Cain battle his addiction and Sophie discover what it meant to really live her life as she wanted.

Well shit on a stick.... yet another author to gush over like a giddy little fangirl. Seriously, cheese and crackers comrades. This book was perfect. I really enjoyed reading this and when I say I read it one sitting, I definitely read it in two hours. It was amazing.

I loved the characters - FLIPPING LOVED THEM.

Sophie was a huge treat. In many romance novels, you get this nerdy girl figure type who has socially awkward skills, I love the nerdy types. I always think it adds something to the chemistry in the long run, or rather the development of the character dynamics to get to the HEA. Sophie was a different breed of nerd that was refreshing. She says what is on her mind, she doesn't fiddle stick around the truth, she is extremely smart, hilarious and just generally the sweetest thing. I also adored that she is so misunderstood by her family, mostly by her sister and mother yet Cain sees past her awkward flaws, taking her at face value, she is just a huge ball of amazing. Everything from her personality, how she views the world, everything - she was just beautiful.

Of course Cain also took a treat for me, it was definitely a hate/love for his character. At first I am really reserved for him, he seems rather guarded personality, hostile, broody alpha male with some questionable lifestyles - definitely the drinking irked me. Going in, I didn't understand what motivated this, but tickle my pickle I was curious, there had to be something and boy was it. It was a damn good backbone to the story. He was a hot mess that is for sure, but it was unjustified. I definitely sympathized for him, many moments of his perspective I just wanted to reach out and hold him, Cain was definitely broken.

I say love/hate for Cain for basic reasons. A lot of this had to do with the chemistry and their dynamics together. On the one hand, Cain treats Sophie with the respect she deserves, he honestly treats her like an adult, a human being. They explore her sexuality together. It is a beautiful thing, honestly I know it sounds weird, but what started their relationship was just something I found to be phenomenal, it was beautifully written. However what became adamant on my dislikes towards Cain is that they were both becoming this all consuming, obsessive couple, really depending on one another to get over their internal conflicts. It was Cain though that really had a lot of internal demons. One that really tortures the growth of the feelings towards one another. Both with his mistrust, family issues, plus his budding alcoholism that was drowning out his pain - this in turn reflected on their relationship. At many points he crossed the line of being too compulsive, too addicted on their passion which boiled into something of a rage filled impulse.

On the other hand though I liked it. I needed it to happen. I needed his rage to finally open his eyes, be the man he was meant to be. Cain was a complicated individual, Sophie really opened his eyes to another world, to him growing as an individual. I loved their chemistry. The connection between Cain and Sophie was just on another level.

Overall, I adored this book. It was the perfect blend of angst feels with believable drama and the sweetest, most swoon worthy moments. I enjoyed the chemistry so much, everything simply slayed me. I honestly could not say that enough - it was perfection.

I highly recommend reading this book, I am super excited to continue reading other works from McCarthy. Plus the announcement for the cover and synopsis for book two, THE BREAKUP is on Goodreads and holy snack crackle and pop I am ready! Do I need to offer up anything for a ARC? Because I am prepared to sale my husband...

The Hookup, by Erin McCarthy, is the 1st book in her new "Jordan Brothers" series. Sophie is super intelligent but when it comes to fashion and men, its like she is completely clueless. Cain has a block on his shoulder that he isn't letting it go and it is somewhat do to his brother. Yet these two together work. Cain is an alcoholic while Sophie is OCD and has these unusual quirks. Their relationship started after Sophie met him when Sophie was at a bar with her older sister to work on her social skills and Cain was making eyes on her older sister. Sophie still talked to him and Cain found her sweet and adorable…after talking longer than a few minutes. This is a book that makes you think in several ways yet has a beautiful romance to jump into. The only things that have me wondering is what the deal was between Cain and his brother. It was slightly explained but not enough to explain why Cain went into such a dramatic downfall. Otherwise, it is a very good read. I cant wait to read Cain’s brother’s book.

I loved this book. I loved Cain in all his emotionally damaged glory. He was unapologetically jerky. But ultimately he was a man who has experienced a level of betrayal no one should ever have to endure. He is surviving in the only way that he can until he meets Sophie.

Sophie was awkward, but confident. She was curious and highly intelligent. She was everything everyone thought was a complete mismatch for Cain, but from their first moment of meeting, their connection is something else. It's unique and just was so entertaining to read about.

I loved these two main characters and the plot of this story. I loved how well everything flowed and how it was all brought to a close. From beginning to end this was a book I could just sit back and enjoy. And that is exactly what I recommend contemporary romance lovers do. This is a must read.

I haven't read anything by Erin McCarthy in a couple of years, so it was really rewarding to read this book. It's really good. I really enjoyed reading about Cain and Sophie. Also, I really liked the fact that Cain was so flawed. The secondary characters were intriguing. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. All in all, this was a very enjoyable, contemporary read. It will be going on my recommend list for sure.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

I really loved this book. The characters of Sophie and Cain are very complex and riveting and each have their own set of demons.

Sophie has always been misunderstood. She's different from the rest of her family and she knows it. She's learned to adapt. When she meets Cain and he gets her, she knows that there is something special about him.

Cain has his own demons. He has faced betrayal by his own family and he's struggling to get through the day. He copes with alcohol and thinks he's hiding his problem from Sophie.

Until he realizes that the only important thing in his life is Sophie.

This book has it all and I had all the feels while reading it.

I like this author but didn't like her YA series. This book does have a YA feel to it but I actually enjoyed it.

I liked Sophie. She's a bit quirky and has OCD tendencies. I also liked Cain. He's become an alcoholic after finding out his identical twin brother slept with his girlfriend and she got pregnant but there is no way of telling which brother is the real father as they share the same DNA. Cain is a functioning alcoholic. He still goes to work everyday as a lobster fisherman.

Sophie is at her family's holiday home in Maine for her sister's wedding. She's 24 and still studying but has decided its time to lose her virginity. She meets Cain in a bar and is very forthright about wanting to have sex with him so they have their lookup but Cain is intrigued by Sophie and they continue to see each other.

I liked the humour in the story and the sex scenes were good. Sophie desperately wants to practice her blow job technique on Cain that she learnt from a BJ class using a banana!

Both Cain and Sophie 'get' each other but there are obstacles in their way plus Cain needs to get over his addiction to alcohol.

This will be a series about Cain and his three brothers. Interesting that the next book is about Sophie's sister Bella and Cain's twin Christian as we know Christian slept with his brother's girlfriend and does not come across as a nice guy in this book. He does try to explain himself a few times to Cain but he doesn't want to know, so hopefully the author can redeem him in his own book?!

There are not many good books around at present so it was a refreshing change to enjoy a book. It was a cute love story with likeable characters. I'm looking forward to the rest in the series.

This was a cute, romantic read. Sophie is adorable; she obviously has some OCD quirks and I wouldn't be surprised if she was also diagnosed with Aspergers (although it's never mentioned in the book she definitely would fit some of the criteria). She's real; her uncertainty, her doubts about herself, her low self esteem...it's all real.

Cain...wow he is something. He comes off as a jerk, but as you get to know him through the story you begin to understand why. My heart broke for him after learning about what had happened with Christian and Camp and how it happened.

The ending felt unfinished for me. I get that the author wants you to continue with the series to find out what happened, but if this is read as a stand alone it's frustrating to not have the answers about what happened to Sophie's sister. Why not at least give us a small picture of what happened and let that be the lead in for the next book? Instead the topic is avoided all together and you're left wondering.

DNF at 34%.

I tried with this one. I was genuinely curious to see if we'd ever find out whose kid Cain's ex was (I liked the added intrigue of having the possible fathers be identical twins). However, I didn't like the writing nor the characters and couldn't get past the 1/3 mark. Another issue is that it never told you whose POV you were in and it would switch back and forth sometimes in the same chapter and so it wasn't always immediately clear whose POV you were currently reading.

The Local Alcoholic meets The Harvard Genius

description

Sophie and Cain are two polar opposites that work so well together, I really enjoyed reading their story. Erin McCarthy is a new-to-me author so I didn't know what to expect when starting this book, but I quickly became a huge fan of hers, and now I cannot wait for the next brothers' book!

This book was so funny, I LOVED the characters!(<- I'm probably going to say that a lot during this review because I really just LOVED them.) Sophie was like a female version of Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. She was socially awkward and brutally honest, but SO FUNNY! Sophie has a few tics - as she likes to call them - she is borderline OCD and has an obsessive mind that fixates on things. She is studying at Harvard for her Ph.D. and is a total math genius, she can solve most equations in her head except for one. Men. Hence why she is 25 years old and still a virgin. Cain was a self-loathing alcoholic who has no intentions of changing and at times he was a total asshole. He wasn't quite as funny as Sophie, but his character did make me laugh a lot. Cain works as a lobster fisherman during the day and a full-time barstool resident at night. Cain was betrayed by his identical twin brother, Christian, who slept with Cains' girlfriend behind his back. Since finding out Christian may or may not be the father of the child Cain thought was his, Cain has made it his mission to drink himself into oblivion each night as a means to forget.

I was hooked from the beginning of this book. The Hookup had such an interesting storyline with great characters. A lot of humour was added which to me made it so much more enjoyable. I only wished we could have met more of Cains brothers during his story - we were told their names but not much else except for Christian.I am excited about Bella and Christians story. I did have some questions about side characters, but I'm sure they will all be answered in the next book. Which is already on my TBR shelf - and I may offer up a kidney for an ARC of it.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes fun, quirky characters and a sucker for rom-com romance with a little angst mixed in.

Reviewed on my blog, Becky on Books, on 5/14/18.

I enjoyed The Hookup, even though it wasn't quite what I was expecting--clearly, I hadn't read the blurb very closely (or at all...I suspect my decision making was mostly, "Oh, I like Erin McCarthy...click). It definitely deals with heavier topics than its cover would lead you to believe. Its characters are quirky and believable, though, and there was nearly as much smiling and laughing going on over here as there was groaning and shaking my head (mostly at Cain, I'll admit), so...I'd say even though it ended giving me a different experience than I thought I was going to have, I'm not at all sorry I picked it up.

Sophie's OCD and (lack of) social skills made reading from her POV a lot of fun. I loved that Cain, for all of his flaws--which he is not at all blind to, either, which helped make him more likable too--was the one person to see her as she really is and truly appreciate her. Even though he initially was attracted to the outward appearance her sister offered, one conversation with Sophie was enough for him to pretty much start asking, "Bella who?"

Things move pretty fast for Sophie and Cade, but it doesn't end up feeling as if their relationship is rushed; the fact that there's a time gap toward the end helps too, and honestly, I was okay with not personally witnessing what happens during that time. We hear what we need to hear about each of their time apart, and are handed a big ol' teaser about something happening to Bella that the next book will apparently reveal--hopefully we'll also learn more there about Cain's family drama there as well, because he wasn't in a place in this book where he could talk to his identical twin about the drama that tore them apart in the first place. Since Cain's future is more of a HFN than an HEA at the end here--he's still got some work ahead of him--fingers crossed that the next book ( The Breakup ) will have plenty of Sophie-and-Cain sightings to assure us that they're heading safely along the path toward an "EA" ending.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the start of a new series, and I think we can look forward to a winning streak here from Ms McCarthy. Although there is some world building, it is very subtle, and just slides straight into the story.

I really enjoyed both lead characters, they are so completely different, and yet it just works so well. Sophie is really well written, with such a wonderfully literal view of life, and yet perfectly capable of developing emotional skills if given the right encouragement and opportunity. Once we see how she is treated by Bella it is not difficult to work out how she could remain aloof. Cain however unexpectedly turns out to be exactly who she needs. I love that he is far from perfect (his drinking may be an issue for some readers), and the twists ensure that we have more sympathy and hope for the situation than I ever expected at the start!

The dissection of their intimate moments, and her inner voice is just fabulous. It has a way of articulating some very real worries, which on occasion are said out loud. Cain just deals with them perfectly, both being light hearted and funny, yet mindful of her naivety. It was hot and freeing for them both.

We get quite few hints as to future plot lines, but never does the story stray far from these two ill fated lovers - and the ending hints at a great new beginning.

Ever read a book that you just expect to end really badly? Well, reading The Hookup had me braced for the train jumping the tracks for most of it. I didn't find the drama in the book angsty as much as tragic. I just could see how easily a relationship between Cain and Sophie would end up really badly.

Cain is a drunk. This is not a spoiler as you know within a few sentences of meeting him that he has a huge problem with alcoholism. He knows he's an alcoholic and doesn't know any way besides drinking (and frequent one night stands) to make his life tolerable.

Sophie is a sweet young woman who enjoys math a lot more than partying. She is quirky and has issues with social interactions. What she wants is an easy and low drama sexual encounter, what she gets is an alcoholic who she has a large amount of chemistry with.

I found this book entertaining and believable. I liked that Cain's alcoholism wasn't whitewashed and that Sophie never tried to save him with her "love." (God bless naive young women trying to save anyone with the power of their love, because they'll just end up bitter old women in the end.) I also liked that Cain never drove drunk.

I look forward to the next book in the series as I did enjoy the secondary characters.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance with drama.

I received an ARC in exchange of my honest review.
