Nathaniel Hawthorne The Scarlet Letter
Secarik kain bertuliskan huruf A (A: Adultery) terpasang di dada Hester Prynne. Ia diharuskan memakainya ke mana pun ia pergi sebagai sanksi sosial atas perbuatan yang dinilai melanggar norma masyarakat; ia hamil setelah lama berpisah dengan suaminya.

Another well done version told in manga form.

Meski The Scarlet Letter dalam versi komik ini tidak terlalu greget secara alur, seperti melompat-lompat, juga kurang kena dramatisasinya, tapi sukses membuat saya penasaran dengan versi novel dan filmnya yang sudah diproduksi setidak-tidaknya 3 kali. Ya, komik ini saya jadikan sebagai jembatan menuju sebuah karya luar biasa dari Hawthorne.

I love the artwork. I also appreciate how it focuses on the most salient events of the classic novel. Wonderful adaptation.

Saya sangsi jika membaca novel aslinya apakah saya akan sangat menikmati seperti membaca versi komiknya ini. Saya punya pengalaman membaca romance lama, pride dan prejudice, yang saya tinggalkan setengah jalan.
The Scarlet Letter bukan kisah klasik yang bertele-tele. Di dalamnya bercerita tentang wanita pemberani yang rela disiksa norma masyarakatnya karena melahirkan seorang anak tanpa suami, dan seorang pendeta yang terlihat bijak, suci dan terhormat, dicintai dan dijunjung tinggi masyarakatnya tetapi tersiksa oleh dosa yang diperbuat karena tidak bisa membuat pengakuan dihadapan umatnya. Lalu seorang suami yang sakit hati dan merasa dikhianati dan melakukan aksi balas dendam seumur hidupnya.
"Semoga Tuhan mengampuni kita berdua. Kita bukan pendosa yang paling keji di dunia ini. Ada seseorang yang lebih keji. Balas dendam laki-laki tua itu lebih hitam daripada dosaku. Ia telah menodai kemurnian hati manusia. Kau dan aky, kita tak pernah melakukan itu."

I found this book was a great summary of the novel The Scarlet Letter. Some parts were a little difficult to follow and it was hard to figure out who was supposed to be talking. The pictures of the characters were not how I pictured them in the novel, but the plot did follow that of the plot in the novel really well.

About Religious politics, puritanism. I have read this book 5 times and each time I can chart the growth of my own maturity. Glad I didn't live there but as my husband tells me I would have conformed. Not so sure about that. Time to read more modern books.

I haven't read the original Scarlet Letter (yet), so I don't know how accurate this manganization (?) is. I think that the art work was very well done, it was fairly realistic yet still was clearly manga. I think the way it was illustrated did a good job foreshadowing.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I really enjoyed this Manga. It stuck closely to the original but made it more accessible to reality anyone. The illustrations are superb and detailed.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel. The drawings were fantastic and the script was very accurate to the original text.

I mean really the original novel is a description of the story. Little dialogue. This supplements the dense Hawthorn mess very well. I love the story. Want to use its major plot points for one of my own some day. Apparently Updike has done it too. Anyway. Long live the scarlet letter and may we damn shame to the farthest margins of existence!
