What a great first book for the New Year. I am really glad it is the first book in a trilogy because I really want more I was sad it was when I read the end. I really liked Regan the Hunter he was a lot sweeter than I was expecting from the blurb and I liked that. I was a little confusuled (confused) at first but that’s just because I have not read many fantasy books but as Kian explained the fire to Regan I caught up quickly.

The story doesn’t have much sex, which I like because it focus on the story and characters. It was a fun read and I will anxiously await the next one.

There are quite a few things I liked about this story-the bonding, the parallel universe concept, demons. However, in my opinion, it lacks chemistry between the two MCs, the final battle was anticlimatic, it's heavy on the melodrama (which isn't something I'm fond of in general) and the world building is lacking.

The premise of parallel worlds/universes has always intrigued me-gates and significant dates i.e. Halloween. Kian's Hunter takes place on Earth while the other plane is left rather enigmatic. Even what Kian actually is never clarified. They talk about the Danio (demon) that has brought Kian to this side. They talk about the different kinds of Fire which are explained only in the most cursory manner. At one point, Regan, in the midst of a tiff with Kian, calls him a "wizard ass", up until then I was thinking he was an elf. Frankly, I'm still lost as to what he is or what his dimension is like and the reasons why he can't go back seem contrived. It read like 'because reasons'.

Kian comes across as naive and a bit awkward-blurting out that Regan and he are destined to be bonded upon first meeting him, which went over like a lead balloon. He fumbles through a lot of their relationship development while taciturn Regan cloaks himself in the tough guy/lone wolf persona. Kian withholds information for the safety and well-being of Regan. I'm not a fan of martyrdom nor of people taking away another's choices through lies of omission based on false assumptions. I do, however, like the whole idea of bonding. The blending of their Fires, the notion that even mortals have Fire and how they affect one another through the bonding. Essentially, I think their relationship wasn't given adequate time to percolate. They were partners one minute and "in love" the next.

The raison d'être for Kian leaving his home was to battle this big, bad Danio which was over in a blink. Vengeance is an adequate reason for me, but the Danio seemed blasé about the whole thing which took some of the wind out of my sails. Kian's Hunter is quite obviously (from the ending) the first of a series. It's not exactly a cliffhanger, but questions linger. Perhaps the next installment will delve into Kian's world and explain the demons and the gates better. The writing nor the story are bad just a bit lackluster.

I would like to thank Love Lane Books for providing me with a copy of this in exchange for my honest opinion.

I found this book a terrible let down. The story was shallow and not well fleshed out. When I read a sci-fi or paranormal book, I want to know about the world the main character, Kian in this case, comes from and how the magic works. This book only gave me small dribbles of the details I needed to even like Kian. Kian has the magik of fire and is on a revenge trip to kill the man who stole his Uncle's fire or magik therefore killing his Uncle. Kian needs the help of his mate, a human named Regan Campbell, to kill the "fire thief". I can only hope as a huge fan of R.J. Scott that the next book in the trilogy does a lot of explaining.

I really liked this book. The idea of Kian getting revenge on a creature that killed his uncle was quite interesting. Kian and Regan are very likable characters and with the way Regan couldn't help but care for Kian in the end, kept me reading.

However, while I did like Kian, I thought it was a shallow read and I was left with a few questions. Mainly, if bonding means you can read each others thoughts, then how could Kian and Darach read each others minds if they were only friends? Also, where was Kian's family? Didn't they want revenge for Kian's uncle as well?

The world created was interesting from the tidbits that were talked about but I would have liked to learn more about Kian's home world, even if he could never go back to it. And, I would have liked to know what will happen to Kian and Regan now that Regan has accepted the bond. Hopefully, we'll read more about them in the next book.

Overall, this was a good start to a new series. It'd be awesome if the world was more built in the next book so that we get an idea of what the culture and rules are in that parallel world. So, more details and a longer book is what I'm hoping for!! :D

The story was interesting and the characters likeable. Kian was cute and maybe with a martyr complex and sometimes Regan was way too mistrustful and sure of himself, but in the end he had a big heart. Kian being 21 years old and a virgin was way more naive than Regan that was 28 and with past experiences, but at the same time our little "wizard" knew what he wanted and was very brave. I wanted to read more about their pasts and their families and friends, this book ended with many questions without any answer or probably, with more questions than when I started it, but is a trilogy and I hope that all will be made clear in the next 2 books. I was curious about why Kian's mind was linked with his best friend's one....

This first story is a great start to the Fire Trilogy. It contains some interesting magical concepts focused around the mysterious magik of Fire, great characters in Kian and Regan, and an evil opposing force I don’t think I’ve seen the last of with the ending of this book. What more can you ask for in an adventure series? I also think this rewrite (based on the original short story published three years ago) is a wonderful improvement and now contains all the emotional and supernatural elements I am looking for in an “otherworldly fantasy”.

Kian comes from a different realm, parallel to but different from our reality, and is here to hunt down an evil being that has killed his uncle in the cruelest possible way - by stealing his Fire. Fire is the sort of magik everyone has in Kian’s world, and comes in different colors. Sounds like a simple need for vengeance, right? Except there are certain rules when dealing with Fire, there is a prophesy about what will need to happen when Kian finds his mate, and Kian broke all kinds of rules to make it to our Earth. The result is an almost impossible task, and Kian is too determined to give up, and too nice to ruin Regan’s life. In other words, he is in deep trouble!

Regan is a tough guy who trusts no one. He hunts demons for a living, as his entire family has done for centuries. He works alone though, so when Kian explains what is needed to defy this mysterious guy he is looking for, Regan’s skepticism takes over. Regan is not only a commitment-phobe, he is also too much a realist to believe in all that nonsense about bonding and mates, so he is determined to get the job done, reluctantly working with Kian, only to run back to his old life right after. Except there is something about Kian that doesn’t sit right with Regan…

If you like stories with magik, mysterious enemies, and prophesies, if you want to find out about two men trying to remain independent despite one knowing better than to try and the other just being stubborn, and if you’re looking for a read that is as fantastical as it is hot and entertaining, then you will probably like this novella.

This is a good story to start off the Fire Trilogy. The world bulding is pretty good and interesting with a parallel world concept, Fire magik, and demons. However, the two main characters, Kian and Regan, didn't sit well with me. They are likeable MC's but everytime Regan and Kian do something, they seem so distant to me that they are actually in there but I barely feel them. Eventhough the story is always about them still there's no attachment made. And also, the story lacks chemistry. I did not see the spark when they become lovers, and their relationship looks forced.

The fighting scene against the Danio, which is supposed to be the strongest demon, is not handled well. They finished it off like a piece of cake. Though, I loved the magik fire idea, the demon hunting, and the bond thing. Those are interesting.

I think I'll continue with the series. But I'm looking forward to the next installment that the MCs would be able to explore their world. Not just by Kian narrating it. Because there are some parts left vague in the plot and I want those to be cleared. And also I'm curious about who Darach really is.

I'm one of the ones who really liked Kian and that trilogy. Now I'm wondering how big the rewrite was, if it makes the story better or not or if it's just added filler for increased word count? If it's actual story that's extended and rewritten I might want to read this new edition.

I love this cover.

Sweet short story with a little bit of a deliberately untied plot thread. Although, the next book is about a different couple, so.... Not sure what is going on.

2nd Read: 12/30/11

1st Read: 1/2/11 (for review at Jessewave)

I was nervous at first, as the world started to build, how RJ Scott could fit all of this into 90 pages. There is a bit of an info dump at the beginning, but nothing really off-putting and most of the world-building comes later — we learn as Regan learns about the fire and the world that Kian comes from. There is just enough world building to support the story, but not enough; and the premise of the story is pretty original and I wanted more of it. From what I understand, this is the beginning of a series, but it remains whether the others will follow Kian and Regan or highlight supporting characters from this first story. I only wish that there had been more room in this story for the characters to blossom. The way the plot is set up, Kian and Regan have very little time together before the you-know-what hits the fan, and then the post-climax was pretty brief. It made me wish this had been given fifty to one hundred extra pages. This outlines a problem that I have with short stories and shorter novellas alike: They are often novel-length stories and plots that are parried down to fit into a certain word count. To me, a lover of stories and charcters, that’s sad, because I feel like the reader misses out on a great opportunity to get to know the characters and the world better. I know there are reasons that authors do this, and I know that the opposite is also true (stories that are so long and that they become masturbatory), but a true novella is a story that can’t go any farther. I’m looking forward to the sequel for this reason — hopefully it will carry on the story started here. The world that RJ Scott created is interesting and enticing enough to keep me coming back...

3.5... I swore I'd never do half stars, but this one was tough for me to rate so I'm breaking my own rule. I really liked the world RJ created for this story, and fully intend to read the rest of the trilogy, but at the same time, it is so difficult to read a fantasy setting in a shorter format -- some parts of it felt rushed, especially when Kian explained his world and his quest to Regan. Also, there was Insta-Love, or destined bonding that I personally struggle with as a romantic theme.

Overall, however, I enjoyed the feel of the story -- there isn't enough internal magick in M/M (that I've found), and the Insta-Love was handled well by both characters (I won't go into more on that because it was mostly at the end of the story, so SPOILER. *grin*) The magic/Fire was interesting, as was Regan's Hunter ancestry. I suspect the rest of the series will be fun to read, and give me more of the magic that I want.

EDIT (1/20/2012) -- Now that I've read most of the trilogy, I have to say that these stories do each other better justice as one long read. In true fantasy style, you can't read one without the other because the real story is that which spans all three books of the trilogy. Think of the Fire Trilogy as one long book, with three parts or volumes. I highly recommend reading them all at once.

(I usually wait in between books in a series, but for this one, don't do that.)

Kian’s Hunter had lots of potential. It could’ve used more world building. It felt rushed at times, especially the relationship between the main characters. I enjoyed some of it, like the mythology. I wish there'd been more to it.

Review written for MM Good Book Reviews

Kian ap Rhys has come to the human world hunting a Danio that ripped the fire from his uncle but he is also seeking his bondmate, the one person who was meant for him. Regan Campbell is hunting demons, a task that has been passed down through the family, when he is approached by Kian he isn’t sure what to make of the ethereal man especially when Kian starts talking about a near parallel world. Kian and Regan must fight together to conquer the evil they now face, but Regan finds it hard to trust and Kian won’t force the bond.

This is a great little novella that introduces us to a world that is nearly parallel to our own but has magic. Kian is from that world, he has traveled to our world to find a killer, and the man he is destined to bond with. Regan is a human who is from a family who has hunted demon’s for hundreds of years, his one goal in life is to destroy the evil, falling in love never enters his mind. Kian wants nothing more than to bond with the man meant for him, but Regan doesn’t trust, and when the threat is taken care of Kian is still in danger as he can’t survive without his bonded.

This story is a really great start to a new (re-written) series, it has a bit of world building for Kian’s world and the bond is explained perfectly. Kian is a brilliant character who holds back as best he can when he realizes that Regan doesn’t want a bond, Regan is a great character who fights against what he feels but finally accepts his feelings. It is a story that isn’t instant love or instant bonding; it is more a story of trusting what you feel is real. It would have been so easy to have had that instant spark acknowledged and to have everything fall into place, but Regan’s personality wouldn’t have made that believable and we wouldn’t have gotten the nice juicy angst that we so enjoy.

I have to say that R.J. Scott has done a good job of giving us just enough information to enjoy this story but leaving enough information to whet our appetites for the next books, like the waking dreams that plague Kian at the end. I liked the fact that both Kian and Regan tried to fight the bond, although they had very different reasons for fighting it. I liked that when they did come together fully, sexually, it wasn’t straight away; they had time to pull back and think about it, especially Regan. I must admit that Kian made things harder by not explaining things in full but it does add nicely to the tension between Kian and Regan, making their end relationship that much more believable.

I have to recommend this to those who love paranormal romances that are a bit bumpy, danger, tension and a touch of angst, some sweet loving, accepting fate and a very interesting ending.

This is the first book I have read by RJ Scott and now that I have a plan on reading many, many more. This story not only combined the elements I so enjoy (science fiction, m/m romance, conflict in relationships, well-developed characters, and lots of emotionality), but it wove all of those elements together seamlessly.

Kian ap Rhys has a mission. It’s a personal mission and one that will cost him a great deal. He must cross over to a different world in order to capture the villain who stole his uncle’s fire, causing his death. To cross over is a one-way trip and in doing so he will come face to face with his promised mate. Should he consummate that bond, he will die unless his mate accepted the bond and remained with him.
Regan Campbell is a hunter who has kept his life neat and tidy. He has avoided any real connection, seeking to fly under the radar at all costs while hunting the Nameless, creatures who wreak havoc and destruction on humans. When Kian enters his life, his neat and orderly way of living is irrevocably disrupted and altered.

What I loved about Kian: The Fire Trilogy Book 1 is how the plot and the character development carried me on a journey without me ever realizing that it was happening. The conflict rises and ebbs, moving along at a quick pace, never stalling, yet managing to fill in enough detail to keep the story fully fleshed and real. Writing in alternating points of view, Ms. Scott gives the reader insight into the minds of both men as they struggle with their inner emotions, wondering how much of their emotions to reveal. The internal conflict between the risk of admitting how they really feel versus not admitting their true feelings is one of the most delicious aspects of the tension in the book.

For readers who want the sex to scorch their corneas or who want a well-developed ending, this book may fall a bit short. The emotions leading up to intimacy are far more vivid than the intimacy itself. I would have enjoyed a few explicit sex scenes that focused entirely on the physical and emotional throws of the sexual moment. The ending also seemed a bit abrupt. While the loose ends were tied, I believe the ending could have been drawn out , emotions, dialogue, and actions playing out on the page for a while longer so we could really feel the conclusion rather than have it rush up upon us.

Overall Kian: The Fire Trilogy Book 1 is a tale of love, magic, and fulfilling destiny. I certainly plan on reading more from this talented author.

4,5 stars.

*coughs* Finally I take the time to review this book-- better say the entire trilogy--.

It passed so many time since the day I bought this (the exact day it was released), and finally the 24th of June I decided to read it. ^^;

So... the story took me completely in from the beginning, and I didn't want to interrupt the reading but, at 3.30 am I really needed to sleep. ^^ So, the next day I finished the book and... and... what the heck was that abrupt ending?! OwO Luckily the second and third books were already out! XD

Anyway, I liked Kian (the character) but Regan a bit less-- at least in the first book.

A good read. <3

A little note: The initial rating was 4 stars (for all three books), but after I finished to read the whole series, I rounded it up to 5.

An interesting start to the trilogy with a young fire mage (for lack of a better word) to crosses to the human world in pursuit of the evil being who stole his uncle's fire, leading to his uncle's death. It seems he's fated to meet his mate, a human who can help strengthen Kian's powers, only if he truly mates and the man leaves, Kian will also die, however he's determined not to blackmail the man into staying even though they accidentally mate when Kian is injured. Now he's stuck on the human side because he wasn't supposed to cross over in the first place. I'm curious to see where it goes with Kian's friend Darrach he left behind.

R j Scott is an auto buy author for me and I have yet to find a book of hers I didn't love. This is no exception. A great little paranormal book. It's the first in the trilogy and the first instalment gives us an insight into the world she created. I love the idea of fire it's a unique spin on things. Kian is very cute and very strong. He isn't submissive or weaker than Regan which is great especially as this story deals with bonded mates and fate. It's nice to read a story involving mate where both partners are equals

Kian is very compelling opening salvo to a series which will set the paranormal reader on fire. RJ Scott once again demonstrates amazing talents for the paranormal romance, which will make a hardened skeptic believe. Her characters and world are created with depth and allow the reader to see for themselves. I highly recommend Kian by RJ Scott, but be warned you will find yourself sucked into a world from which you will never want to escape.

A good read with good storyline. I would have liked more world development and character building but the way the book started out did work for the story and reader's do get the jest of what is happening and why it is happening. For those of you who like shounen-ai (look up the meaning if you don't know what I mean), I would recommend this book.

I did have some questions concerning how Regan could hear? Darach when Kian needed to heal. Also I felt it was a bit rushed but nonetheless it was an enjoyable read.

A really promising begining and ok I like bonding stories, which gave a bit of a plus to the book.
If it was not the first part in a series, I'd give it 3 stars, because it was a bit short.

Kian has come to the human world to avenge his uncle and to meet his prophecised mate-
the Hunter of the Nameless. Bonding his Hunter and leaving him would mean Kian's death but what is a firemage to do if the destined mate is pretty much set against being bonded?

This one's hard to rate. I didn't quite like it, but didn't dislike it either. It didn't feel like a whole, complete story. Even considering it's the first book in a trilogy. Much as I don't like doing so many half stars, 2.5 stars seems right, being exactly at half way point between 0 and 5.

The beginning was very promising. I was immensely interested and impatient to know more about Kian. That's probably why I'm feeling kinda disappointed at the rather abrupt ending.

The start into the plot of this series is really well written and actually pretty good. As soon I started to read it pulled me in and there was really no possibility I could have stop reading it in the middle. And the main characters were interesting. I definitely want to read more about this couple. It was great!
Highly recommended read....

Interesting...

I like the dynamic of Kian's fire bonding him to Regan. I would have liked a bit more development of their relationship. But I like the backstory of Kian coming through the Gate and not being able to return home. I'm curious to see where the story goes and if Kian and his friends are reunited.

I had trouble getting into this one and I'm not really sure why. The writing was good but I never really connected with the characters. I ended up stopping around 74% because I had no clue what was going on. I think this will be one that I might have just start over...someday in the future.
