Lost in the frozen woods of New Hampshire, Penelope Chestnut discovers the wreckage of a small plane. An aviator herself, she sees clues to a conspiracy in the rusted-out remains.

Rumors of her discovery bring Wyatt Sinclair to Cold Spring, determined to put to rest a family scandal and learn what really happened to his legendary uncle, who had disappeared with his adventuress lover years earlier.

As Wyatt and Penelope investigate, old motives are uncovered and new ones created, including a growing attraction between the pair. But when an unknown enemy emerges with a violence rooted in desperation, uncovering the truth will be far less problematic than surviving it.

Carla Neggers is the New York Times bestselling author of the Sharpe & Donovan series featuring Boston-based FBI agents Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan, and the popular Swift River Valley series set in the small, fictional New England town of Knights Bridge. With many bestsellers to her credit, Carla loves to write now as much as she did when she climbed a tree at age eleven with a pad and pen and spun stories perched on her favorite branch.

A native New Englander, Carla and her husband divide their time between their hilltop home in Vermont, a sofa bed at their kids' places in Boston and various inns, hotels and hideaways on their travels, frequently to Ireland.

Deep in the woods of New Hampshire, Penelope Chestnut finds the wreckage of an old plane. Rumors of the discovery bring Wyatt Sinclair, who's determined to put to rest a family scandal about his legendary uncle. But an unknown enemy emerges from the past, and desperation to uncover the truth is the only thing that can save them.

I've been a Neggers fan for years, and this wasn't a let down. I bought this not realizing it's an older title and I read it once before. I read it again to refresh, and loved it just as much as the first time. The setting was well-illustrated and the action/suspense intriguing. Best of all, the readers won't be disappointed by a neat bow at the end of the book. Strong conflict, characters to root for, and a steady romance make this hard to put down. Highly recommended.

Carla Neggars has hit another home run in this book. You meet Colt and Frankie earl on as two young lovers on a mission and the story drives forward. I thought the characters Penelope and Harriet were well crafted and deeper than originally portrayed. The Sinclair clan was flawed but the twists in the story were worth the wait to learn about each of them. Jack was the wild card! Well done on saving his story for last. I thought the book moved along and the development of the characters superb. There are some readers that may think the story too slow but it takes time to bake a great story. This author has done just that again!

Just as the stars say; it was okay. And I was glad I finished it.

It kept me interested enough to keep going, but I wouldn't have been upset if I lost the book mid-way.

It may be because these aren't my kind of books. I'm more into made-up fantasy or historical novels....which, speaking of the latter; I was more interested in that storyline in this book.

I liked the overall plot: The history was cool, the basic mystery was okay, and the ending was...ehh. I kind of guessed part of it, however, the last twist she pulls you through was so irritating because it was almost unguessable. I like it much more when authors give you subtle clues throughout, and when you finally figure out "whodunnit" you have that squinty-eyes-at-the-ceiling "Ahhhh!" moment.

Also, I liked how the romance wasn't in-your-face too much, however the dialogue was. Very one-liner-ish as well as too-romantic things a man would never say to a woman. I almost started laughing at some serious romantic parts because if I was told some of those things I would just laugh. Of course, it IS romantic, but if men say that stuff out loud it becomes silly and boyish.

Anyway...there ya go.

I loved this story. Told with Neggers' detail and precision, we learn the story of Colt and Frannie through the actions of Penelope, Wyatt, and the various other family members and inhabitants of Cold Spring. Not just a romance, while we see Penelope and Wyatt learning to love and trust each other, we also see them both struggling with family relationships. And we see Harriett trying to figure out who she is and who she wants to be. Penelope and Harriett are both such complex, well-developed characters. And Neggers keeps readers on their toes trying to solve the mystery of what really happened in the plane crash 45 years ago and why it all matters now. I love Neggers writing style and the way she builds suspense both with what she shows us and what she doesn't.

The book was boring. Why does someone worry so much about intelligent women who are 30 and 45 years old? They do not need looking after. It seems that was the premise of the book. Everyone worried about Penelope and Harriet. Penelope was thought to be too adventurous and Harriet too fragile. Of course, neither thought was true.

There are a couple of editing errors that I noticed. At the beginning of the book, Wyatt could speak 4 languages. That changed to 5 languages near the end of the book. He did not learn an extra language during the course of the book. Another error, Harriet spilled wine in her lap, but went upstairs to change her shirt. Why didn't she change her skirt? At least the grammar was okay.

Not one of Neggers' better books.

Great Mystery set in New Hampshire.

This was a wonderful book. It has all of the things you want in a well written mystery: great characters, long held secrets, family discord, lost diamonds, a stuffed moose head named Willard and at least one bad guy. Carla Neggers' New Hampshire is the setting for this book and it is a great canvas for her story. Kiss the Moon is a great read and I highly recommend it. Have a couple of hankies available because you will need them, but it's worth it!

Engaging story about a plane crash that happened forty fives years before in New Hampshire. Penelope thought she'd found the crash site whilst lost, it was dark, she was cold and hungry. One day on she doubted her view of the plane. Reporters and family of the lost got involved with the tale wanting to unravel the facts for themselves. The small town has inhabitants in turmoil, the Sinclair's, who's son was missing since the crash along with his girlfriend are landowners and corporate giants, the girlfriend a child of the town.

This was a great story/mystery with a bit of romance

But I didn't really love the characters. Everyone lying to loved ones and plotting things I KNEW would just come out later, making things worse in the long run. Then all the sudden the mc's were in love.... I just didn't get it. maybe im just not that forgiving. That just my opinion. The actual story/mystery was pretty great though. I would definitely recommend this book.

Interesting story but bummed by the language

First off I generally enjoy reading Carla's books and this story was good. But I can't remember reading one with so much cussing. The word generally used was God 's name in vain. I'm sorry but that's one word I can't abide. And the liberal use of it really turned me off this book . Not sure when or if I'll read another if the cussing progresses in other storylines.

Captivating Mystery

I’ve read many of Carla Neggers’ series books, but none of her stand alone. I’m glad I gave this a try - excellent mystery! There’s plenty of chemistry between Penelope and Wyatt, lots of twists and turns, strong personalities, and a few quirky characters. All in all, this is an excellent read!

I really enjoyed this mystery novel written by Carla Neggars. Unlike many modern mysteries, this novel didn’t have to resort to violence and sex to keep the reader engaged. The author’s writing style and the intriguing plot along with interesting characters achieved that. I really was caught up in this story of an independent woman caught up in a decades old mystery.

This book takes place in small town New Hampshire, which is the first thing I found entertaining about it. There are some great eccentric characters. The romance plot is very slow burn and almost secondary to the mystery plot. Neither plot resolved until the very end, and i enjoyed the reading journey.

Enjoyable

Lies, good intentions, intrigue, suspense, quirkiness, a scandal, a missing treasure and more. Could have done without the bad language. There wasn’t too much, but it didn’t add anything to the story.

Love Carla’s books!

Just enough mystery and a little romance but it’s the locations that she describes that fills your head and heart. It’s like taking a vacation and meeting new people and getting lost in their story.

Plane found in the woods

Another one of her fast read and fast paced. Penelope always seemed to get her self in trouble according to her father. Excellent a five star book.
