Wears Valley Witches #3

Keep Your Twin Up

Rate this book
Something is stirring deep within the twins’ unearthed cauldron…and no, it’s not Bertha’s homemade moonshine.

Lela and Mae finally found their tribe. After their magic trickles over to other granny witch descendants in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, now they have a coven and a home. Little do they know that the same magical source that supplies them with their powers can also make them deathly ill.

Now they’re struggling to offload their magic and share it with volunteers within their coven…even the men.

Men with shiny, new magical powers? Surely nothing could go awry.

In the midst of the twins’ magical conundrums, a ghost from their family’s Scottish past keeps popping out of the cauldron like a genie from a lamp. She’s returned to issue a the coins that Lela and Mae found on their family’s ancestral farm can’t be used by them, or anyone else, lest they be cursed for eternity.

What’s the worst that could happen? Eternal curses? Pfft. Why not?

When the coins go missing, the twins find themselves in a race against time to recover them before they are doomed to the same, unfortunate fate as their ancestor.

Meanwhile, Lela is intrigued by the professor’s dark and handsome brother, Joseph, who also just happens to have an adorable four-year-old daughter named Eleanor. When an accident sends Eleanor directly to the ER, can Lela use her powers to save her? Or will her true identity push her new love interest away?

This is book three of the Wears Valley Witches and twins Lela and Mae are finally finding their feet as the most powerful granny witches on the area and also learning how to use this magic that only appeared when they returned to the place their mother left soon after their birth, after other witches tried to kill them. Their departure took most of the magic away from these witches and some resented it. Twin witches are a powerful combination and something that comes with a warning for all. Finding out they had an aunt, Aunt Bertha, was a shock and they have moved to Appalachia and are about to move into their old family home, which Mae says is haunted, having seen the ghost of a woman, but no one else believes her. They are finally moving out of the tiny camper and into the big house after loads of renovations and a few hidden discoveries. The Garden Club, as those granny witches still in the town have come to call their powerless coven, headed by Constance. Now their presence back in town has made descendants of the former granny witches suddenly develop magical powers, which has come as a shock to some. The twins and the others have gathered these newbies into their coven and are teaching them how to use their magic.

When Lela and Mae start to suffer, one from severe headaches and the other unable to stomach any food, Bertha originally believes it to be physical, but they soon discover it is magical in origin. It seems the two of them are holding too much magic and this is the side effects. But even using up loads of magic doing healing for Lela and growing lots of trees and plant life for Mae, leaves them exhausted. They need to find a better way of sharing their vast amounts of magic, but in an easier manner and one which is controlled and doesn’t leave any side effects. Unfortunately, there are a few teething issues with their spells and their conundrum continues. Mae is getting closer to Ted, her new love interest, whilst her daughter Harry (Harriet) is going to college nearby and mainly home only on weekends. Ted does a lot of the cooking and Lela is always invited, and on one evening his brother Joseph and his daughter Eleanor (4) dropped by unexpectedly. Ted is a great uncle to Eleanor and also helps his brother out after he lost his wife Ana in childbirth. He is just about ready to start dating again and can’t take his eyes off Lela! Nor can she take her eyes off him and his daughter, as the attraction is mutual.

Mae keeps trying to get the ghost to show herself in front of Bertha or Lela, and eventually the ghost, Florie, a Scottish ancestor from way back, comes back out, fed by Mae’s magic. She warns them against using any of the gold coins they recently unearthed, as there is a curse attached to them and she wants help to break the curse on her spirit. If the twins use any of the coins or allow anyone else to use them, they will be cursed fro eternity, as Florie is. When the coins suddenly disappear, they are at a loss as to where they might be and begin to suffer some ill effects. They ask around, but everyone is completely unaware of these ancient and worth a lot of money coins, but someone is clearly hiding something from them. Lela is trying to figure out her attraction to Joseph, helped by the matchmaking of Mae and Ted, but also has another man in town after her and it is beginning to creep her out! On the night of their first date together, he is a no show, but not because he wants to. Eleanor has had an accident and it leaves Joseph having to get her to hospital and worried she might be badly injured. Lela needs to sneak in before Eleanor is taken elsewhere and use her healing magic, without being caught. Once he realises what she can do, she has to wonder if that is too much for him to deal with or if he might only want to be with her because of her actions to save his daughter.

Lots of romance that just about gets a foothold at times, mixed in with lots of uncontrollable emotions giving off wild magic, even when asleep, affecting others. The twins still have a lot to learn and thankfully have some old hands who can help them, like their Aunt Bertha and a few others knowing who to trust is difficult after the event sin the previous book, when others tried to kill them, wanting their magic back. The mountain magic needs a balance and they and the other granny witches and even other descendants of former granny witches have decided to revitalise the former Granny Witch Coven and do away with hiding under the guise of a garden club any longer. I’m looking forward to more wayward magic and a bit more romance in the next book and hope to see the twins managing to balance out life, love and magic a bit better in the future. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Making It Official

I am so enjoying these delightful stories about twin sisters who discover they are hereditary witches in midlife. These sisters are so different; what a pleasure to read the alternating chapters going back and forth between their perspectives. Mae is doing well and good in her romance with the professor, and Lela embarks on her own romance, too, with a single dad of an adorable four-year-old girl—the professor’s brother! All women who are descendants of the granny witches have decided to turn their informal gardening club into an official coven, with plans to assist their neighbors using their particular magical skills. The men who support them can be a part of it, too, but not quite in the same way as the women. It was fun to watch this community build and learn more about granny mountain magic… and even more fun to find out more about those mysterious coins we learned about in the other book. If you liked the first two books of this series, you would probably very much enjoy following the magical twin sisters, their aunt Bertha, and their magical community as they tackle life's challenges and pursue new adventures.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Still learning about their magical heritage, our heroines have their hands full. And every solution they come up with seems to create two problems. It is hard to keep it all under wraps, let alone under control.

This is book three of the series, but it is written as a standalone. Feel free to jump in at any time.

This is a cozy witch mystery, which is always fun. The story is well written and easy to read with a well developed setting and solid characters. I like our sisters and it was fun watching them explore their powers. There was also a nice bit of humor throughout the story, which just added to the fun. Overall, it was very enjoyable and I look forward to seeing what comes next for our heroines.

Highly recommended.

Love this witchy cozy mystery series

We are back with Lela & Mae, twins, who discovered they are witches (in book one). Still learning their witch skills they always seem to find themselves in a mystery. Will they discover what is going on in Wears Valley?

If you love cozy mysteries you will love this series. Easy to read and well written with wonderful characters. This one does end on a bit of a cliffhanger and I can't wait until the next book is out. I'm really enjoying reading books by L.A. Boruff, she has such a way with words and a storyline that I don't want to put the book down.

Keep You Twin Up can be read as a standalone but you really should read the first 2 books in the series. You won't regret it. A quick and funny read.

Highly recommend!

I received a free copy of this book via the author for an honest review. These are my words and my words alone, while I'm not an eloquent reviewer I do review from the heart.

Super cute!

This series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine! Two 40-ish twins return to eastern Tennessee to discover that their the long thought dead descendants of Granny Witches. And now that their back, their magic has manifested.

This book continues the story where both Lela and Mae finding out that their illness is due to having to much buildup of magic, so they try to share it with the other Granny Witches. Mae is now dating Ted and Lela finds Ted's brother Joseph very interesting lol.

But someone steals their gold coins so they have to figure out who stole them before they are cursed!

Great story!

I really enjoy this paranormal twin story, it's got mystery and romance. Written with warmth and wit. You get a good idea of each sibling's characteristics. In this book, Lela begins a budding romance with her sister's boyfriend's brother.

They have trials and tribulations to overcome but boy does it end on a cliffhanger.

If you haven't read any in the series yet please start with book 1, hopefully by the time you get to this book then the next 2 in the series will be out lol.

You won't put it down.

Book 3 continues the story of Lela, Mae, Harriet, Bertha, their friends, relatives, and enemies. New friends are made - Eleanor and Joseph, and sparks fly with Lela. Lela and Mae get magical afflictions but find a cure, which turns out to have unpleasant unexpected side effects. The identity of the ghost is finally discovered and she gives helpful advice and information. The cursed gold coins are stolen and retrieving them taxes their magical abilities. Finally, an unknown uncle suddenly appears, setting the stage for the next book.

Mae and Lela are back, and their powers are getting the best of them once again. Can they get everything back under control before it’s too late? That was a lot of fun. We get to learn even more about their powers, the coven, even some of the history of how the granny witches arrived in Wears Valley. Lots of new things to investigate and I already can’t wait to find out what’s going to happen next.

The twins are back in book three of the Wears Valley Witches series and I am loving the twins. Lela and Mae's story continues with the ladies finding out more about their magic and their illness. From the interesting and quirky characters to the mystery, magic, and great storyline this series is one of my favorites by this author duo. I can't wait to read the next book in this series to see what happens next for the twins. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. The source of Lela and Mae's powers is too great and it takes a bit of trial and error to find a solution even if it has unexpected results. Finding a family treasure leads to almost danger when it is stolen but it is recovered but now a curse needs to be broken.

The twins and their friends are back and so is the trouble they seem to find. Things are going a bit wrong and Lela and Mae must solve a mystery and survive it all. Lots of fun and entertaining to read. Funny characters and funny scenes found throughout the book.

This is a good addition to the series. Just as quirky and witty as the two previous stories. The twins are trying to deal with new and budding relationships, unwanted advances, a magical illness, theft, a haunting and a curse. Well written and witty, this is good stuff.

It must be hard to have so much magic it makes you sick. I am happy Mae and Lela got it all sorted out. This book is fun and full of crazy things. Ghosts…er…one ghost, betrayal. That was a shock. I enjoy this series a whole bunch!

A good story

I did enjoy this story. The characters are fun and interesting, the plot is easily followed, and the story is good. The flow of the story stops and starts a bit too quickly, but the premise is fun. I do recommend this book.

This one was very predictable when it comes to the coins. I think the part I like most is everyone is learning and growing with the twins

Another adventure of magical mishap with Mae and Lela as they continue to discover the impact and learn about their growing magic.
A lovely cozy magical mystery adventure as romance could be blossoming for Lela this time around.
Great cast of characters with old friends and some new editions along with good fun, humour and mystery to solve.
Looking forward to next book and new adventure.
