Alice-Miranda at School

Rate this book
Move over, Matilda, and step aside, Madeline, there’s a new charming miniature heroine about to make her mark.

Alice-Miranda Highton-Smith-Kennigton-Jones can't wait to start boarding school. When she arrives at Winchesterfield-Downsfordvale Academy for Proper Young Ladies, the adventure begins . . . only not quite as Alice-Miranda expects.

The minute she sets foot on the school's manicured grounds, she senses that something is wrong: Miss Grimm, the headmistress, is nowhere to be seen, the gardens have no flowers, and a mysterious stranger seems to be hiding out on the premises. But that's not all. Some girls are mean and spoiled, like Alethea Goldsworthy.

Can Alice-Miranda defeat Alethea in one of three difficult tests she must pass to remain at school? Will she discover Winchesterfield-Downsfordvale's big secret--and make things right?

Well, if anyone can, it's spunky Alice-Miranda!

BOOK #1 READ FOR BELIEVATHON ROUND 2.

representation: none, i don't think

[trigger warnings are listed at the bottom of this review and may contain spoilers]

★★★★

i was very unsure of this at first because we follow a goody-two-shoes rich schoolgirl who thinks she knows what's best for everyone and takes charge in every situation without consulting anybody first, but i ended up really enjoying her character because she always tries to see the good in everyone and she's very kind. she's basically exactly what 7 year old hermione would have been like.

my favourite character by far though, was her best friend, Mollie. she was WOKE! just... the whole interaction???? YES.

Alethea (aka the bully): My daddy's famous. He runs an oil company. But I suppose you knew that already?
Alice Miranda: Really? Good on him. That must be very exciting. I imagine he flies all over the world visiting different countries and giving jobs to thousands of very poor people.
Mollie: More like stealing from third-world countries and making people work for next to nothing in the most hideous circumstances.

BROOOOOOOOO. shoutout to mollie for doing the mostest, because alice miranda can sometimes come across as a 'white saviour' kind of character, especially when she mentions stuff like going with her family to africa to help the poor and stuff like that.

trigger warnings: brief mention of a pet dying, disrespectful term used to describe homeless people, bullying, death of loved ones (in the past).

Child's rating - 1 star

I hated this book from the end of the first paragraph, I hated every single paragraph from then on, apart from about 4 brief paragraphs about 9/10ths of the way through, they were ok. Who needs endurance training when you can read this?? I must admit to an underlying agitation because we have Book 2 in the house, and i just don't feel at ease being in the same house as Book 2, just not sure I'd survive another one.

Alice Miranda must be the most annoyingly egotistical (in an 'i'm not egotistical, i'm in it for the greater good of humanity' kinda way - you know like most kids are prone to be??) child ever written down. She is exactly 7 1/4 which is only a few days older than my daughter was when I started reading it to her, so I must admit I'm comparing, and my child wins, hands down, mine may throw a ripper tantrum, but at least she's not a pretentious prat.

Alice Miranda talks like an adult, uses language like an adult, and sits and contemplates the big issues of life over a cup of tea (???) like an (old) adult and when it all becomes too much she calls mummy and daddy for a bit of a helping hand and brings in their gardener, cook and their helicopter that actually has a name (and I thought that only happened in Thomas the Tank Engine??). It just didn't gel with her age, and even from a reading point of view, the language is aimed older than 7, and yet I doubt many children older than 7 are interested in reading about 7 year olds particularly when they're as mind numbingly boring and egotistical and incessantly annoying and precocious as she is.

However, there are two main upsides to reading this. This book made me feel something, it may have been passionate hatred, but that's an emotion that I don't feel very often, and this book took me there each and every night. The other key upside is that I appreciate my own children that little bit more. Even when they are at their most painfully annoying and i'm at my wits end and I'm tearing my hair out, they ain't got nothing on this annoying little kid.

I am not sure how to write about this book. It is so utterly unbelievable it is more like a fairy tale cloaked in a realistic story. Or maybe it is a parody of British boarding schools. The repetition in the story reminds me of beginning chapter books for emerging readers (grades 2-3) but the bullying seems older and the narrator is a first grader who sounds more mature than most adults. She is a genius but developmentally too advanced for her age. So... let the fairy tale begin...

Once upon a time there was a 7-year-old who had the wisdom and vocabulary of a 70-year-old. She called a boarding school because she wanted to go there and was accepted even though her parents weren't ready and sobbed when they dropped her off. While walking around the school she met three adults all having problems and unhappy with their work situations. Like the good witch in Oz, she waved her wand (figuratively), and fixed their problems using mummy and daddy's money. When she meets the class bully, she can't seem to fix her, but she handles her with self-control and the maturity of an adult. The headmistress is also unhappy and takes issue with the little poppet that grows happiness around her like a field of poppies. The headmistress makes the smiling 7-year-old girl go through a series of unfair tests (a 3 hour SAT type test) which she does with the smile and joy of a saint. Will the poppet pass the tests and charm Miss Grimm, the headmistress, like she has everyone else?

Everything in the plot is unbelievable. So much so it is funny. It reminded me of the Willoughby's but not as extreme or with as many references to literature which is why I'm not sure if the author intended it that way or not. I think so. Maybe if I was British I would see more connections or more of a savvy reader.

The writing uses repetition of plot elements that will help a young reader but the vocabulary is higher than normally found in this type of book. It might be good for a high reader in grades 2 or 3, but the target audience is grade 4. The setting is in England with English vocabulary such as poppet - I love that word. The adults use that word when referring to Alice-Miranda, the 7-year-old, who works her magic on those around her making them happy.

The characters don't change internally. Alice-Miranda is always good and always says the right thing. the bully is one-dimensional and bosses everyone around because she's rich and thinks she owns everything at the boarding school. Alice-Miranda does wonder why she is this way but the reader never finds out. The headmistress changes internally. There is no great depth to the characters' thoughts and the plot is predictable. I actually enjoyed more of the outrageous and imaginative plot twists because they were so out there. Make sure to park disbelief on the table before picking up this book.

Discussions can surround themes of how to deal with being rich, dealing with bulllies, and sinning people over with compliments. The happy ending is going to please most young readers.

This book is the only piece of media I’ve encountered (as of 26th June 2021) with a character called Alethea (spelt the same way)!!

When Alice-Miranda first sees Alethea Goldsworthy’s enormous limousine in Chapter 13 and is warned by an unknown girl to “stay right out of her way”, Alice-Miranda and the reader (11-year-old me) are both hopeful that Alethea “can’t be that bad”. Unfortunately, the first sound we hear Alethea make is her screaming at the lack of mineral water in her limousine’s minibar, so ink-Alethea’s status as a person to avoid is solidified.

I have a signed copy of this Alice-Miranda book where Jacqueline Harvey addressed me as “Alethea (the lovely one!)”.

Eh, where do I freaking begin...
Ah, yes...
Alice Miranda may be quite cute and charming, also sweet, but there are many flaws as well. For one, this main protagonist, Alice Miranda, us very annoying and a true nuisance. Who they heck just barges into someone's car? Who unexpectedly breaks into a principle's office without permission given? Who just befriends someone under 10 seconds? Very unrealistic, creepy and plain strange. Alice Miranda is adorable but is a EXTREMELY annoying, repent too perfect, unrealistic, and creepy character. She also never gives a break at all. She is like a perfect goddess, not making mistakes and creating only mass perfection and warding her problems off with money. I say, she is too perfect. Nobody is perfect, except for her, of course. She's dainty, flawless, beautiful, perfect, charming, smart, high class, kind, and intelligent. I have even gotten to the point where I say she's smarter then Einstein himself. He was probably the most clever and smartest man, yes, but he made mistakes, too. Unlike this stupid Alice character. What a issue...

Oh yes, we cannot forget about Head Perfect Althea. Like always, we have the little miss perfect, wealthy, rich, pretty, cute, mean and snobbish blonde haired girl with blue eyes and peachy smooth skin. I hate this character. I replaced her name with "Barbie" instead of Althea. Made more sense.
Thus just shows the book is really cliche. You have smart, geeky, cute brunette who does everything correct and blonde mean popular rich girl who is terrible and rude. Now where's Ken in all this...oh yeah.
Finally, you have the whiny little nerdy crybaby. Booh hooh on this book.

Lets sum this up, shall we? Crap book. I have had mental five year olds that don't know how to spell yet write better then this garbage. This novel was so bad, it made me puke and cry. I am not going to read the rest of this trash series, thank you very much!
How can people like you like this? Never mind that...
Truly awful, don't dare read...

A very cute book. Yes Alice-Miranda is totally unbelievable but as the author says, she is a mix of many girls and it is fiction and a children's story to boot. The big bad wolf is unbelievable too . . . I enjoyed this book because it was sweet, well written and like Alice-Miranda made me smile.

Namun pengecualian untuk Alice-Miranda At School.

Berbicara masalah kecerdasan, jangan menganggapnya sepele.

Sebut saja Miss Higgins sang Sekretaris sekolah, Jacinta-tukang ngamuk terhebat nomor dua sesekolah, Millie-teman sekamarnya Alice-Miranda, Mr Charles si tukang kebun, Mrs Oliver ataupun Mrs Smith yang menjadi juru masak.

Miss Grim membuat peraturan baru.

Jacqueline Harvey writes some of the loveliest children's chapter books. Alice-Miranda is no exception. This is the first book in the series which follows the journey of Alice-Miranda and her friends through boarding school and all the wonderful adventures they get up to. Alice-Miranda always looks for the best in people and is forever leading the way to solve a problem or mystery with her friends. She's a beautiful role model for all young girls.

They couldn't lose her - Winchesterfield-Downsfordvale needed a girl like Alice-Miranda more than ever.

Imagine Harry Potter but if Harry was an extremely precocious 7 years-and-a-1/4-old girl with two loving parents who supported her decision to enrol in boarding school at that very age, where the embittered headmistress hates her but the staff are enamoured with her, and also where she finds a best friend in an underprivileged redhead while being terrorised by a snobby blonde bully. And take all the magic away.

Ok, I realise that comparison is ridiculous but that's exactly how I felt about this story. And I don't say that lightly. Alice-Miranda at Sea was one of my favourite books as a kid and I devoured her adventures in other locales, but I'd never actually read the one that started it all until just now... and I'm so torn lol

The pacing is awful. The writing is frightfully juvenile and unpolished compared to what I've read in the later books. There are so many truly unbelievable moments. Within the first 45 pages, Alice-Miranda arrives at boarding school and sends school cook Mrs Smith on holiday in America when she hears she's never been, ordering her family helicopter to come and swap her out with her family's own cook. She insists on befriending reclusive headmistress Miss Grimm, who retaliates by trying to prove Alice-Miranda is too young to be at her school through an incredibly difficult exam, A SOLO 5 DAY WILDERNESS CAMPING TREK, and a REGATTA against school champion/bully Alethea. And Miss Highton-Smith-Kennington-Jones aces them all. SHE IS SEVEN AND A QUARTER YEARS OLD. AT LEAST HARRY WAS 11. AND A WIZARD. And if that wasn't enough: oh my god. How are you doing this.

However, the rating is as such because I suspect my nostalgia and lasting wonderment for my previous reads of Alice-Miranda are at play, and part of me feels compelled to defend this childhood companion of mine. She reminds me of an untainted time, purely because she is so pure of heart herself. And if she isn't a right old corker with her world of knowledge and big heart. And apparently her adventures are still being written as of last year, so I hope to not lose touch with her!

Alice-Miranda at School
Alice Miranda On Holiday
Alice Miranda Takes The Lead
Alice Miranda at Sea

Pengen ngoleksi ahhh, buat yang suka sama buku anak-anak, buku ini recomended banget deh :)

4 sayap untuk si peri penolong :)

Good stuff. My 11-year-old self was hooked. This book is how I learnt English.

I found this book by not having anything to reading and randomly taking it off the library shelf. I do admit it did not turn out to be that bad. The Alice Miranda is a very interesting character that is unique to me in the sense that I haven't seen a character like that before. The school is also very interesting with its staff low key shrouded in mystery; a mystery that unfolds as Alice walks the halls. My favorite character would probably be either the gardener because he seems like a kind person that tries to stay positive even when his work isn't working out how he wants it to become. Alice's parents also seem very nice and supportive of their smart daughter. The one character I do not care for would probably be that classic mean girl. Alice was acting so nice and patient with her yet she's so ungrateful.

I read this after seeing on a shelf in a book store. The cover looked pretty interesting, so I picked it up and decided to give it a review.
Okay, before I start with flaws in this book, let me tell you the good bit.
It was nice to see a positive character as the lead, and I thought that was refreshing. Alice is cheerful, kind little girl who loves to help others, even if they are totally mean to her. It was lovely to read about someone who wouldn't give up at the first hint of trouble, and tries her best until the end.

But there were also alot of things I didn't like about this novel.
I thought Alice Miranda was a little TOO perfect. She doesn't seem to have any flaws at all. She smart (nearly genious), happy all the time, has her parents wrapped around her little finger (the way they kept bugging her about whether she wanted to come home or not got really annoying), everyone else loves her too (and if anyone doesn't like her then their brats or they've misunderstood her), she's rich, she's popular (imagine being asked to be head girl at age 7!), she's pretty and dainty too, and just overall totally unrealistic.
I like to relate to my main characters somehow, but I couldn't really relate to Alice Miranda. I've never met anyone like Alice Miranda, let alone a 7 year old child. She doesn't seem to be human. She has virtually no flaws at all.
It's not normal to be happy ALL the time - sorry, but it isn't. It kind of got irksome reading about a character who didn't seem to have any other emotions aside from being cheerful/sweet/or nosy - I mean determined. (Come on, she does seem a little nosy - I mean, what kind of person crawls into a random person car and introduces herself expecting the other person to be okay with it? A little creepy...)

Also, the writing seemed to be little too simple at times - not really for most 12 year olds like myself, but more like 5-8 year olds. There wasn't much description either - I'd say 80% of this book was pretty much dialogue.
The story being too face paced didn't help much either - although the plot was interesting, it felt kind of rushed.
These series have alot of potential - I hope the author improves her writing in her future stories. This (as well as the main character) is the reason I'm giving this story two stars.

That being said, I loved the other characters - like Jacinta Headlington Bear, and Millie Mc-Something (can't remember her name). Especailly Jacinta. I can't wait to read more about in the next books! I already have Alice Miranda on Holiday and Alice Miranda takes the lead!
