Dean Mafako, M.D. is an author, physician, and clinical professor of pediatrics with over 15 years of clinical and research experience. He is passionate about medicine and helping others, but also enjoys writing fiction and nonfiction novels. He writes to help others who may be dealing with difficult and traumatic life experiences to show them how their struggles can lead to personal growth and spiritual healing.
Excellent book about how different challenges at work can affect an individual’s life irreversibly. Highly recommend for anyone on healthcare or in any field for that matter.
Awesome story about the good and bad of Healthcare. It's like was there from day one!! Anyone who works in the ICU setting could find themselves in the story line .
I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning devouring this book.
Dr. Dean Mafako shares his fictionalized of the years of his career as a cardiac intensivist in Biloxi Mississippi in the late 2010s. He's hired to build up the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, to hire staff, improve services, and more at their Children's Hospital.
Reading this intense book, you'll learn about the medical industry, about the inner workings of hospitals, particularly the administrative and political side of hospitals. There's little about the medical insurance industry, which is probably good because the book would be even longer.
When I first started the book, I wasn't certain about the 500+ pages, but I was hooked by the end of the first part, about 25 pages in. After that, I was captivated by the book, by how Mafako as Philson dealt with the ups and downs of his position at the hospital, and indeed, the culture of failure and success. After reading "Burned Out" I wanted to know more about how doctors deal with burnout, how they handle their intense lives. Most of all, I want to praise all my doctors for their kindness when treating me. I am most thankful for my health and the skills of doctors.
This book about the intense, overly competitive lives of doctors is part of Mafako's therapy for burnout which explains some important aspect of the book. It's a little too long, it needs an editor to cut the repetition, and perhaps add some perspective. I'm guessing the author is still too close to his experiences to provide some lessons and perspective. Maybe in his next book.
Thanks to the author and to BookTrib for a copy of "Burned Out" to read and review.
Burned out is an outstanding book about the health industry, while reading this book I learned a lot about ins and outs of a hospital and to be honest this is the very first book I’ve read in this gerne, it is fiction but the author, Dean Mafako clearly shared his experience in this matter.
This book sure shows how lives can be affected by working in a hospital, the intense hours take a toll on the doctors lives, professionally and personally; but maybe what’s more important is how the heath system works when it is evident in needs improvement in so many ways, yet all the professionals working in this world manage to save lives and keep the system working.
This is a novel that reads like a memoir. It follows the story of Dr. Eric Philson who is recruited from Ft. Myers to the CHOB, Children's Hospital of Biloxi, in their pediatric care unit. He recognizes that there are major issues in the department: understaffing, procedures, paper records, etc., and he sees it as an opportunity to make a difference. However, all of his changes can't help the bureaucracy that runs the hospital, and after several years of attempting to be a positive influence, Eric is starting to experience physical setbacks, family problems, and more. Although he has several chances to change jobs, he is steadfast in his commitment to CHOB. I honestly thought this was a memoir at times, as it rang so true. Burnout is a thing! Achieving work/life balance is important!
Burned Out is a book about how as a workers, we could have a lot of challenges and also, how these challenges could impact in ours lives in all aspects. It's a great story about humanity on how the main male character needs to have the heart to do his job and give the best of him, but at the same time, you can see the whole world inside on doctor lives and hospital material, for example, one of those details are the rules and the policies of how hospitals works. . The book is a little longer but it worth the reading if you are a person who lives in the healthcare area, because maybe you are going to feel very accurate with it.
Eric Phillson and his wife Anna we’re happy living in Fort Myers Florida but when he got the opportunity to help build a whole new pediatric heart clinic for Children’s Hospital of Biloxi at first he hesitated but after visiting and bringing his family for a visit he decided to do it. The hospital was below the national standard average for care in this move would bring lots of personal strengths and challenges and would affect his personal life and his standing as a heart surgeon. From Doctors who wine like children and abuse the staff to working under strenuous conditions and with no access to the things needed to run a healthy hospital even hurricanes. To say the doctor was tested is an understatement but Mr. Mafako tells the story with a Witt and grace not always seen in fiction. I thought this book was so humorous and found myself laughing out loud he is so talented in writing very stressful situations and breaking the tension with humor and clever solutions I really and thoroughly enjoyed this book it is a top-notch five star read I can honestly say one of my favorite books this year. I don’t think I have ever read a book by this author but this will definitely not be my last this is based on a true story and it’s one I highly recommend. Please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
An ambitious cardiac physician fights for the young patients in his care, facing a series of escalating conflicts that threaten to end his career in Dean Mafako, M.D.'s medical novel, BURNED OUT.
" (...) One day you are king of your domain, the next you are being escorted from the premises by security. (...) "
I met a real sociopath here. He is a pediatric heart surgeon. I was very scared. I was afraid for the lives of his little patients. Our main character, Eric Philson has a wonderful wife, Ana, two beautiful daughters, a house and a high position. He is the associate director of the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Fort Myers Hospital. He had everything that every man dreams of. Was he really happy? One phone call changed his life. The question is, is it for the better or rather for the worse? You will see for yourself by reading "Bourned out". What awaits our doctor at the Children's Hospital of Biloxi (CHOB)? Are all Mississippi people peasants? Will our hero change his mind about these people? Or will he rather be confirmed in this belief? If you like medical books, you'll like this one. Here, thanks to the main character, we have a close look at the work of cardiac surgeons. We are witnessing the waking up of patients and the behaviour of medical staff. Does everyone always play fair here? I found here a lot of descriptions that were not always interesting and sometimes bored me. But I kept reading because I am very interested in the subject. Thanks to this story, I learned a lot of medical curiosities. Are you curious about them? I refer you to the book "Bourned Out". Can your dream job become your worst nightmare? From the book, you will learn how hospital employees are treated. And what a slow fall looks like. Will it be possible to introduce beneficial changes in the ICU and bring the children's hospital into the 21st century? A very good psychological book, or rather a psychological war between the characters in this story. I read the book with bated breath. The further I went, the more I feared for the life of the main character. I liked the thorough descriptions of cardiology and cardiac surgery procedures. Reading this e-book, I had the impression that I was working together with the main character. I see this book as a diary of Dr. Eric's life. Thanks to him, I know how you can lead to professional burnout. When we want to do good for others, there will always be some black sheep that will trip us up. Unfortunately, it's sad, but true. Does your career always have to be more important than your private life? Can you get so lost in your work that you forget about your own life? If you love medical topics, this book will be perfect for you. Here you will learn a lot of interesting issues in the field of cardiac surgery. I must tell you right away that the novel "Burned out" is not an easy story. For me, it was a very difficult read. Probably because of its theme. I'm a fast reader, but I couldn't finish this book in one day. I read it in a few days. To better understand this story, I recommend you to be very focused while reading it. Nevertheless, I encourage you to read "Burned Out". See what can lead to the wrong person in a certain position. Should physician errors be exposed or swept under the rug? I secretly hope that author Dean Mafako, M.D. he did not write this book out of his own accord. Dean Mafako, M.D. is an author, physician, and clinical professor of pediatrics. He has over fifteen years of clinical and research experience. I would love to read his other books. Kudos to the author for this story. Thank you for the emotions that accompanied me while reading it. Even though this story is difficult, it will stay in my memory for a long time. Thank you to the author for showing me that not everything is always colourful. The ending of the story brought tears to my eyes. Whether I cried from happiness or rather from unhappiness, you will find out by reading "Bourned Out". This book is worth reading.
This story is about Dr. Eric Philson after he is recruited from Ft. Myers to the CHOB, Children’s Hospital of Biloxi, for the pediatric care unit. The writing is excellent. But I did have one problem that started at the front of the book, the use of acronyms like ACT and ECMO, which throws you immediately out of the story trying to figure out what it means. Medical jargon without context to most people is gibberish. While some terms are easily recognized from the multitude of TV medical shows, ICU, and CICU, some are obscure enough that you want to understand the context.
A Google search doesn’t help much, as ACT means many things in the medical field. ECMO was a bit easier to find, meaning extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Still, stopping to figure out what that means takes you out of the story at the very beginning. For that, I am giving it a rating of 4. Perhaps explaining what it means in a glossary or in the story itself would help with the confusion.
Burnout is something that happens in every field of endeavor. If not caught quickly, it can become an all-encompassing spiral down the rabbit hole of despair. Dr. Philson sees the overburdening bureaucracy that plagues the hospital and, in his attempt to change it, winds up one of its victims after several years of trying to change the system lumped on top of family issues, physical problems, and life in general. Medicine is a high-stress field, much like the life of police officers, firefighters, and other first responders who have difficulty turning it off once they go “off-duty.”
The book does have the feeling of a memoir at times, and it is evident that the author Dean Mafako M.D. has extensive knowledge of the subject matter. The descriptions used are vivid, and you get an immediate picture in your mind.
However, I did find fault with the “pristine multimillion-dollar plantation-style homes” description. I first visited Biloxi in 1996, before Hurricane Katrina in 2005. At that time, there were pristine plantation homes. I visited again in 2011. There were significant differences in the city as it was still recovering from the hurricane. Biloxi was flattened by the hurricane in 2005. Places like the post-war home of the former President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis, Beauvoir, were extensively damaged. Some were even completely destroyed. Much of the work to repair the city is still ongoing, with 20 percent destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
But that being said, it is an excellent read if you have a few hours to get immersed in a book that will leave you wondering where the time went by the end. I highly recommend this book. Good job.

Review
Burned Out by Dean Mafako was almost like reading a memoir of sorts but following the fictional Doctor Eric Philson who takes a position at the Chrildren’s Hospital of Biloxi with one goal, to build the cardiac intensive care unit from the ground up. But from the start the physician faces several obstacles including the aftereffects of a hurricane, the deprivation of essential staff and resources and a cardiac surgeon who is resistant to any change. Determined though Dr. Philson will do whatever it takes to improve the care for children but as the job begins to take a toll on his free time, marriage and health just how much will he be willing to sacrifice? Working hundred-hour weeks, overcoming what seems the impossible and facing personal ruin are only the start of what he will face. Does he have the determination to do what’s right even if it costs him everything.
As someone who’s had a mother who was a registered SRN in the UK and a best friend who is a Nurse in Canada I was aware of the strain, stress, long and unforgiving hours they work. It was interesting to see this reflected in this sort of fictionalised memoir and see how the competitive work lives of Drs also play out. I have to say at the start I wasn’t sure I would enjoy this one due to the length and the medical focus but the book kept me hooked throughout.
It was interesting to see Dr Philson’s struggles and how he deals with them and it seems clear from the writing this was an cathartic experience for Dr Mafako as well. While this deals with the health industry where hours are often long and stressful it was easy to sympathise with Philson and see how it takes a toll. The book will really help open some people’s eyes to what medical staff go through on and day to day basis. The writing style while almost memoir like is also engaging and easy to follow making it seem shorter than it is and you can quickly get immersed in the story as well. All in all this was an enjoyable read and I would recommend to anyone interested in learning more about the medical sector and the struggles those working in it go through.

This is a compelling medical drama that explores the challenges faced by Dr. Eric Philson as he strives to establish a cardiac intensive care unit at the Children's Hospital of Biloxi. Inside you will find this book delivers a thought-provoking and emotionally charged narrative.
The story follows Dr. Eric Philson, a physician who embarks on the task of building a cardiac intensive care unit from scratch. Set against the backdrop of the aftermath of a hurricane, the novel delves into the harsh realities of working in a resource-deprived environment, where Dr. Philson must navigate limited staff and resources. The narrative seamlessly combines medical details with personal drama, creating a compelling blend of medical realism and emotional depth. There’s a little of everything for every reader.
Dr. Philson's character is well-developed and relatable, making him a compelling protagonist. The author skillfully captures the emotional toll that the job takes on Dr. Philson, affecting his personal life, relationships, and even his health. His unwavering dedication to improving the care for children shines through, and readers will find themselves rooting for his success. Everyone loves a good underdog story.
The pacing of the novel is well-balanced, keeping readers engaged throughout. The author effectively explores ethical dilemmas and the internal struggles faced by Dr. Philson as he grapples with the weight of his responsibilities.
The writing style is engaging and descriptive, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the hospital setting and the challenges faced by the characters. The author's expertise in the medical field shines through, providing a sense of authenticity to the medical procedures and terminology portrayed in the story. I would only say that the book needed to offer more background knowledge with some of the terminology used. Nonmedical people aren’t going to readily know these terms. While this didn’t take away from the narrative it would have added to it.

If you are interested in learning more about life in the medical field and the healthcare profession this book is for you.
This book is a fiction novel about the healthcare profession but in part reads like a memoir aswell. Author Dean Mark shares many of his own experiences from when he worked as a doctor and the burnout and challenges that he faced in not only his professional life but his personal life aswell.
The story follows the life of Dr Eric Philson and his mission to build and improve his hospital department, excelling in a demanding and competitive career all while deals with his struggling/failing marriage, home life and struggling with intense burn out.
The book felt intimidatingly long as it's about 500+ pages but it is an excellent read and definitely worth it. The writing style is slightly difficult to follow at first but once you get into the story it is gripping, immersive and each chapter is filled with suspense. The medical aspects and jargon are really well explained and described. The author makes it very easy to follow if you have no previous medical knowledge. This story is a page turned and leaves you engrossed till the last chapter.
Dean excellently shows the struggle that people working in the healthcare field face and scarfices that they have to make everyday. He shows us a deeper look into how intense and demanding working in the medical field can be and shows us how this affects these professionals mental and physical health and how this also takes a toll on their personal realtionships and family life.
This story shows the hard work, passion, determination and love that healthcare professionals put into their work everyday.
This book carries an important message about the importance of work and life balance and that burn out is something that should help be prevented and not just dealt with.
Burned Out left me utterly amazed. It's no surprise that this powerful story originates from the depths of the author's personal experiences. Dean Mafako M D, a pediatric physician with over a decade of practice, crafts the central protagonist, Eric Philson, with such authenticity that one can't help but see him as a reflection of the author's own journey, creating a compelling case study of a profession often misunderstood by outsiders. Within the pages, Eric, an adept children's doctor, takes on the daunting task of transforming a dilapidated hospital in Biloxi, Mississippi. The facility, plagued by years of administrative shortcomings, embodies an environment of unprofessionalism, toxicity, and neglect. Eric's mission to uplift both patients and staff seems insurmountable, testing his limits like never before. Faced with immense challenges, he must make sacrifices that border on the irrational. Balancing his health, family life, and mental well-being, Eric confronts a heartrending choice between seeking a harmonious life or pursuing an arduous task destined to lead to self-destruction. Dean Makafo skillfully presents readers with a profound portrayal of true burnout, delving into the depths of Eric's character. The book not only sheds light on the hidden realities of the medical profession but also showcases an awe-inspiring demonstration of resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to doing what's right. Eric's exceptional kindness and relentless pursuit of justice are tempered with human flaws, making him a remarkably relatable protagonist throughout this captivating journey. "Burned Out" is a gripping and addictive work of fiction that must be experienced to be believed. The author deserves immense credit for bringing this compelling and raw narrative to the world.
This is a powerful and moving story, told in extensive detail, about a doctor who sacrifices pretty much everything to move his family to Mississippi and tirelessly rebuilds a pediatric cardiac intensive care unit to his own health and detriment. This is a book that takes place in a hospital and thoroughly describes the ins and outs behind the workings and administration of a medical unit, but the ultimate story being told could have taken place at any other large institutional setting taken over by privatization and the interest of putting profit ahead of all else. Even though I have no medical background, I was taken in by the story and couldn't stop reading it, at times even feeling quite angry on the protagonist's behalf, repeatedly wondering while reading it why he doesn't quit and why he keeps putting up with this. My biggest complaint about this book is that it is exceedingly long at over 500 pages, and I think a lot of it could have been edited out, cut, and trimmed down without affecting the overall message and theme of the book. Regardless, this book serves as a detailed case study on how just one toxic individual can poison the whole culture and bring down an entire system, institution, or workplace setting. It also shows how a profit and status-obsessed, corrupted, and incompetent administration will exploit their own employees, and the more passionate, dedicated, and self-sacrificial you are, the more they will chew you up and spit you out. In short, it's a warning tale for all workers, even prestigious professional like doctors and medical directors, not to sacrifice your health and your life to a capitalist system that sees you as expendable.
Phil Porter was a somewhat legendary physician in the field of pediatric cardiac surgery with marvelous skills in his field and a world class jerk! He comes to the Children's Hospital of Biloxi, Mississippi with one intention - to build the cardiac intensive care unit from the ground up. But there are several hurdles like the devastating aftereffects of a hurricane, deprivation of essential staff and resources, and a cardiac surgeon resistant to change. He still devotes his everything for this cause until the job begins to take a toll on his free time, marriage, and health. Working hundred-hour weeks, overcoming the impossible, and facing personal ruin are only the start of what he will face.
A one-of-a-kind story, this is a very interesting and great book based on healthcare services and a human's determination and grit to do good for the society. The title is appropriate, for the protagonist is definitely Burned Out. As we have witnessed the state of the healthcare workers during the time of the pandemic, this book is relatable to those situations. The book also depicts the inner workings of hospitals and how certain things work in the industry.
The book has several terms and situations from the medical field, slightly not understandable to the general audience a few times. In all other parts of the book, it's a page-turner and that too is a lengthy one. The writing is brilliant, raw and elaborate. This is a fictionalized portrayal of the author's own experiences.

The theme of Emotions, care, struggle is very well woven through this story. Dean's storytelling skills is commendable. Hence, I will highly recommend this amazing book to all the readers especially if you belong from the medical industry. It's a must read.
A timely novel, both a great story and platform for public awareness!
Texas author Dean Mafako, MD is both a pediatrician and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, and a Physician Burnout Victim and Burnout Prevention Advocate - the underlying impetus for writing this fictional novel BURNED OUT. He has created a fictional character in Dr. Eric Philson whose life and experiences mirror the author’s. The growing incidence of physician burnout, heightened by the demands that the pandemic has created, is a factor that the public should understand, and in writing this exceptionally fine novel that makes the crisis into a novel format invites understanding of this problem. Dr. Mafako skillfully creates a credible story that reads like an engrossing thriller while increasing public awareness of factors in our healthcare system that demand repair. Focusing on the impact of the Mississippi hurricanes damage to hospitals and the challenges to deliver critical medical care makes the story even mote cogent. This is an engrossing thriller that carries a message (and support) for healthcare providers. A must read! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book
Realistic. Hard to read. Powerful. —that's how this book feels. It tells the story of Dr. Eric Philson, who sets out to build a special unit in a kids' hospital. Now, I relate to this book (not as someone who works in medicine, but as a teacher). I understand the feelings, the stress, and the burnout. Fortunately, maybe not as much as Eric.
The book is pretty long, so get ready for a good, long read. I took my time, and even though it's a big story, the writing is clear and not too hard. It talks about the tough stuff behind the scenes in the hospital, giving you a real peek into the medical world. However, I don't think it's just for medical folks; it shows how hard any big job can be.
It helps a reader get the perspective of what might be happening to doctors. (Also, I think in any profession). It is more than just medicine; it shows what people like Eric give up. It makes you think about how much it costs to do the right thing. The book, in simple words, is a deep look at trying hard and what it might cost you. It's like taking a trip into a world where people work really hard to make things better, and you can feel it with every turn of the page
From start to finish, I was completely engrossed in the story of a doctor navigating the high-stress world of healthcare. Mafako provides a detailed and honest account of the ups and downs that come with this challenging profession, and I was constantly left wondering how the story would unfold. Even as someone who is not in the healthcare industry, I found myself deeply invested in the characters and their struggles. One of the most powerful takeaways from this book is the reminder that burnout is a very real issue, no matter what career you're in. Through the story's exploration of the toll that long hours, high pressure, and constant demands can take on a person, I gained a newfound appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices made by healthcare providers. Overall, I think Burned Out is a must-read for anyone interested in the healthcare industry or simply looking for a compelling and thought-provoking story. Mafako’s writing style is engaging and immersive, and the characters feel like real people with real struggles. Don't miss out on this one!
Ok. let’s begin, This novel centres around the pressures and challenges faced by many individuals in our fast-paced society, and Dr Eric Philson is no different, suffering with burnout and dealing with the complexities of every day life. As the reader, I was taken on an emotional and though provoking rollercoaster ride, exploring some of the pressures and challenges that many individuals are faced with on a daily basis in today’s society. The author has created a realistic and relatable main character, in Dr Eric Philson, and I loved him, I felt every emotion he portrayed within his relationship, career and his mental well-being, showing the awful impact that burnout has not just the individual but on friends, family, work colleagues etc.. The sad thing is that this is becoming a part of reality for far too many people these days. I highly recommend this book to anyone out there who likes to read a relatable narrative that delves into important themes that are all too common in today’s society.
This is one of a unique compilation of stories associated with real life experiences as it involves reality and struggles in a medical organisation. Therefore, this makes the read more interesting and relatable. The main protagonist, Eric, is a physician by profession and arrives in Biloxi with the aim of improving the health care facilities and setting up a cardiac emergency unit. It was not a bed of roses for him; he worked extensively and tried approaching it with all the willpower he has, but different scenarios and circumstances will keep adding hurdles to his vision. The book is well detailed, including medical terms and some related knowledge. But detailed and explicit utilization of this has not only made the read interesting but also more realistic. The characters and their life stories are close to reality and hold interesting events to keep the readers hooked. The author Dean Mafako, has remarkably utilized his knowledge and writing to create an interesting and eye-opening read. I enjoyed it thoroughly and would definitely like to read more of this kind.
It is very obvious that the author is a medical practitioner with a lot of expertise. I love hearing about the true stories of what goes on in a medical facility. To get an inside peek into the Children's ICU was especially eye-opening when observing from Dr Philson's POV. The tension reverberates off the pages and I found myself wondering if any changes would come about at the Children's Hospital of Biloxi with the dinosaur regime of surgeons running the CICU. I felt conflicted about those patients who's bodies had enough and deserved dignity while at the same time, as a parent, I wondered how if I would be able to give up, especially when there was a doctor telling me not to.
This was an excellent read and even with a lot of medical jargon, I did not feel like I was unable to follow what was going n because the author presented the details in an understandable way. Highly recommended for anyone who loves to hear the stories of what really goes on behind the scenes at a hospital.
Loved this book. This a raw, inside look of the medical field inside the high stress environment of the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit. It is a glimpse into the underworld of medicine. This book is fiction but it is gripping and feels real. The author details the roller coaster ride of Dr. Philson who is accepts a job at Children's Hospital of Biloxi to build cardiac ICU and improve the care for underprivileged children in an institution that has limited resources and is still recovering from the after effects of a major hurricane. I couldn't put this book down. It is emotional, thought-provoking, and will leave you wondering what will happen next. It is a warning about the detrimental effects of Burnout, in healthcare and in every profession. Dedication taken too far can have catastrophic consequences on your personal life. This book should be made into a movie, it really has it all. This is must read!
