New York Times bestselling author/artist Loren Long creates an unforgettable children's classic.

Otis is a special tractor. He loves his farmer and he loves to work. And he loves the little calf in the next stall, whom he purrs to sleep with his soft motor. In fact, the two become great friends: they play in the fields, leap hay bales, and play ring-around-the-rosy by Mud Pond.

But when Otis is replaced with the big yellow tractor, he is cast away behind the barn, unused, unnoticed . . . until the little calf gets stuck in Mud Pond. Then there is only one tractor—and it’s not big or yellow—who can come to the rescue. It is little old Otis who saves his friend. It is Otis who saves the day.

In a wonderful new palette, and in the tradition of classics like Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and The Story of Ferdinand, Loren Long has crafted an unforgettable new story—and character—celebrating the power of friendship and perseverance.

I grew up in Lexington, Kentucky in the 1970’s. We had no artists of any kind in the family. We didn’t know any artists. I liked sports, especially baseball. My mother read to me a lot. But I have to admit, my favorite subject in school was gym class. I also liked to draw. My parents encouraged me to keep drawing.

Otis is a spunky little tractor and seems to have all those on the farm working effectively. When he is not helping the farmer, Otis plays with the animals and builds strong relationship with them. When a new calf becomes his neighbour in barn, Otis is overjoyed and adds the young one to his regular fun and games. However, the farmer chooses to replace Otis with a large tractor, sending Otis out back to live among the growing weeds. When the calf gets into trouble, only Otis can help, but will it be enough and timely enough to save the day? Neo liked learning about 'early Otis' as he calls him in this book, seeing where the adventures on the farm will take us as we push through the series.

4.5 STARS. I so wanted to love this book and think maybe I placed my expectations too high since I'd been desperately wanting to read it ever since I saw it in a bookstore before Christmas. In the end, by the time I read my library copy, I really, really liked it but it lacked that extra "something" to make it really a standout in my mind. Even so, I highly recommend it! Long's inspiration is from classic children's books such as The Story of Ferdinand and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (which is funny because the minute I saw the cover I thought, gosh, I don't think I've seen a cuter baby bovine since Ferdinand!) and his illustrations really do have a certain old-fashioned appeal. The story of a friendship between an old tractor and a calf--a friendship that endures and triumphs even when the old tractor is replaced by a bright new yellow one, a friendship that ultimately saves the calf's life and the old tractor's spirit. Very sweet!

Otis was a happy tractor who loved his job helping on the farm, and enjoyed his after-hours occupations - riding the rolling hills, exploring the Mud Pond, playing leapfrog with bales of hay - as well. When the farmer brings a beautiful baby calf home with him, Otis finds a friend and companion as well, and his happiness is complete. But then Otis is replaced by a shiny new yellow tractor - the latest model - and parked out of sight, behind the barn. Sinking deeper and deeper into dejection, Otis refuses to be roused by his worried little friend... until, that is, the day the little calf becomes mired in the Mud Pond, and the big yellow tractor is of no use.

A sweet little story, with delightful illustrations, Loren Long's Otis is a conscious tribute to some of the classic American picture-books of previous generations, from Virginia Lee Burton's Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel to Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson's The Story of Ferdinand , and as such, has both contemporary and nostalgic appeal. Having loved both of the aforementioned books as a girl, I was delighted with Long's gentle tale, and the accompanying artwork, and appreciated the parallels to these other works that I observed in it. I'm not sure that this will ever be a favorite of mine - perhaps I would have to grow up with it? - but there is no denying that it has great charm.

This was a really sweet book about a tractor and a little calf who become friends. I picked up a copy of this at a resale shop with my little nephew in mind. I am so glad I spent the twenty-five cents on it, because he wants me to read it to him all the time now. It is his absolute favorite. It is not a christian book per se, but it is a clean, sweet book about the importance of friendship.

Otis brings an interesting character to the picture book world - an old tractor on a farm. I teach in a suburban district, but in an area where a lot of people in our building come from rural homes. My principal runs a farm, and he has shared this one with students as his favorite tale for the last couple of years. It's a touching story, and beautifully illustrated. It's amazing how creative children's authors and illustrators can be around the theme of friendship.

Probably the most beautiful and well-written picture of the decade, hands down. Loren Long has brought back the wistful joy of children's books from long ago, in the style of Virginia Lee Burton. This enchanting tale of friendship between a calf and a small red tractor touches your heart, as you feel yourself transported to another time where no one was in a rush, and you could take in the beauty of nature around you at your leisure. Otis the Tractor traipses through the fields with his friend the calf, and you so wish that you can hold on to that feeling of youth that seems eternal. But this idyllic landscape is disrupted by modernization and change in the form of a big, new tractor that puts poor Otis out to pasture. Of course, there is a crisis involving the poor calf, and only Otis can save him. This is a must-own book that can be savored over and over again, shared with your students, your child, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, or the neighbors kids. This is a book that I recommend to all, as it will stay with your for a long time.

A sweet story about the comfort an old, caring tractor brings to a lonely calf and the friendship that blooms between them. This seems like such a classic story and the illustrations had a timeless feel to them that I simply loved! The text was fairly predictable, but the story was told with warmth and tenderness (in both words and illustrations) and I couldn't help but be touched by the story.

I have a love / hate relationship with this book.

I love that my kid loves to so much he instantly stops crying to pay attention. I hate that he makes me read it 3-6 times in a row and have to hide it from him.

A sweet story about an unusual friendship. Readers didn’t quite get how the great rescue happens — why does going in a circle get the calf out of the mud?

Personal response- I read this book to my 5 year old sister and she really enjoyed it. When I asked her what her favorite part was she responded with, "I liked the part where Otis gets the cow out of the puddle." When asked about her least favorite part she said," I didn't like when the yellow tractor took Otis' spot." Overall she really enjoyed the book.
Plot- In this story it begins with Otis, a tractor, working around the farm and being very helpful. Everyone loves his putt, putt, putt sounds he makes around the farm. Then a new, big, yellow tractor comes who can do all of Otis' jobs faster and better. Otis begins to sit behind the barn and has weeds growing around him. He realizes that everyone forgot about him. Then one day he heard a commotion and found out that a little calf had gotten stuck in the mud pit. Everyone from all over the farm came to try and get the calf unstuck. They tried using the big, yellow tractor but the big vroom he made scared the calf deeper. Otis decided to come help. He rides around in a circle outside of the mud pit and the putt, putt, putt sound attracted the calf to the outside of the pit where farmers could get it. After that the calf and Otis became best friends and everyone realized how important Otis was.
Recommendation- I recommend this book to any child that is starting to read. It is a nice simple book and very easy to understand. I think that boys and girls would both equally love this book because it does not really have a male or female feeling. It can help teach kids that no matter what happens, friends will always be there for you.

Otis
By Loren Long
1. Otis Is the story about an old tractor named Otis. He and his framer take care of the fields all day. At the end of the day Otis goes out and plays near the mud pond, jumps over bales of hay, and sits under the apple tree watching his farm. One day a little calf shows up and befriends Otis, they become best friends until the day the farmer buys a new tractor. Otis gets moved out of the barn and the calf gets sad. The farmer wants to enter the calf in a contest but cannot find him because he runs away. When the farmer finds the calf he is stuck in the mud pond with no way out. The farmer tries everything to get the calf out even the new tractor. Just when it seems like there is no hope Otis shows up and rescues the calf. The farmer lets Otis spend the rest of his days with the calf under the apple tree.
2. I would recommend this book to 2nd and 3rd graders.
3. This book would be good to use when discussing science and geography, because it talks about animals and the farmlands.
4. I think a student who may have trouble making friends would enjoy seeing how things from different background can become friends and help each other out in tough spots.
5. This would be a good book for kids to read aloud to each other because it has a funny catch phrase that the students would have fun saying.
6. This would be a good book to read to the whole class to teach them about helping each other and the newer things does not always mean better.
7. There are other books that could be read with this theme of farms. Like Old McDonald or This Little Farm.
8. I could not find any other books, video, or toys that were related to Otis.

This is a wonderful story about a little tractor who finds a way to be relevant, even after being replaced by a bigger, shinier, and newer tractor. The illustrations are great and complement the story very nicely. We read the next book, Otis and the Tornado first, and then discovered this one. We really enjoyed reading both of them and would like to read more about this plucky little tractor.

Otis Took part in the We Give Books read a thon this afternoon. Everyone, everywhere read Otis with the hopes of breaking a record which I do not yet know the results.
Did love this story though of a little tractor and a little calf who become best friends. Love the message that sometimes things, in this case a tractor, cannot be replaced by the new and more modern, because it has benefits all it's own. Will buy this book for my tractor loving three year old grandson, Jake.

This book was on the Golden Sower Nominee 2011-2012 list. This book is geared toward prek- 2nd grade children. The main characters in the story are a tractor and a calf, so younger children will find the characters to be more believable.

Cute story for kids who can't get enough of tractor stories. This would make a nice alternative for parents who are sick of the endless line of Thomas the Tank Engine books.

Otis is a hard working tractor that works all the days, but also knows how to have fun at the end of the day. After his day in the fields, we follow Otis through his adventures around the farm as he would be having fun. One of his favorite things is to sit under the apple tree and overlook the farm as the sun set. One day, the farm buys a little calf who is alone and scared, but the puffs of Otis settle the little baby. The calf follows him through work and all throughout his adventures, becoming great friends who loved each other very much. Much later, the farmer returns with another brand new yellow tractor while Otis had to stay outside. However, the rumble of the yellow tractor made the calf cry, and poor Otis is dismayed as the weeds grow over him and he refuses to play anymore. One day the calf gets stuck in the mud pond! Everything the people do makes the baby further stuck and the yellow tractor scares the calf deeper yet! Finally, hearing the commotion, Otis the hero comes puffing over the hill and Otis rescues his best baby friend through using his cleverness. Everyone was reunited and happy as Otis now watched over the animals as his puffs calmed, leaving everyone happily ever after. I loved this simple little book, recommended by one of my first grade kiddos whose mom reads this story often.

Otis is a little tractor with a big heart and he loves the farmer and the farm where he works.after work Otis likes to unwind by playing leapfrog, ring-around-the-rosy, and other games until he is tired and sits under the apple tree and watch the farm below. Then at nightfall he heads to the barn. Then he gets a surprise when a little calf is placed in the stall next to him and soon they are the best of friends.

A second theme running through the book is that of retirement and being replaced and in this case "being put out to pasture". Then Otis is sad and loses all joy because he is not working and cannot see his farm and doesn't play with the little cow.

Then one day everything changes as the little calf gets stuck in the mud pond and nothing the farmer does will work until an old friend shows up that has the answer.

I love the sound of the tractor - putt puff putted chuffed- and I love the way he is always smiling as he works. One of my favorite pictures is the little cows small head and big ears dropping mud as it watches Otis puffing down the hill to the rescue.

The notes at the end describe how Loren Long studied the artwork of Virginia Lee Burton and Robert Lawson and I can see reminiscent details that inspired them in the Otis book. If you like this title there is a whole bunch more in this series.

This is the story about an old tractor named Otis. He and the framer take care of the fields all day and keep the farm in shape. When Otis is done with his work on the farm for the day, he goes out and plays near the mud pond, jumps over bales of hay, and sits under the apple tree watching his farm. One day Otis gets moved out of the barn to the overgrown grass because the farmer has gotten a new tractor. When the farmer wants to enter the calf in a contest, he cannot find him because he has ran away.

I think this is a precious book. Although it's sad that Otis is basically thrown out, the faithfulness he shows is heartwarming. I love that Otis and the calf get to come together again at the end.

I would use this for cueing expressive language. There is a fun little saying throughout the book and it would be good for the the kiddos. This would also be a good pragmatics lesson on friendship and not leaving anyone behind or writing someone off because of what they look like.

This book is about a little tractor named Otis. He was the only tractor on the farm and made friends with the new little calf the farmer brought to the barn. The two friends have all kinds of fun as they adventure throughout the farmland. The farmer buys a new bigger tractor to replace Otis. Otis is so sad about this that he refused to play with his friend. The calf one-day adventures to the pond and gets stuck in the mud. Nobody was able to help rescue him except for Otis. After that, the farmer realized how special Otis is to the farm.

This is a sweet story about friendship. I think that it would be great to use in a kindergarten or first-grade classroom. All of the illustrations in the book were cute and fit the story so well. It can be used to teach the lesson about how sometimes the most different of people can be the best of friends. As well as even when meeting new people and making new friends, your old friends will always have a special place in your heart. It can also be used to talk about how even when we think we have been replaced or cannot help anymore that each of us has our own talents and gifts that only we are good at. Just like nobody other than Otis was able to help the calf out of the mud.

Otis is a tractor who loves his work on the farm. He befriends a calf and then enjoys farm life even more. Eventually Otis is replaced by a new, bigger tractor, and he is left behind the barn to be encroached upon by weeds. But when the calf is stuck in a muddy pond, only Otis can save the day, earning back some of his responsibilities on the farm in the process.
I generally really love and gravitate to farm theme picture books. They appeal to me for the nostalgia factor of spending a lot of time at a farm as a child, and they also appeal to my kids who love tractors and animals. They also tend to have really beautiful illustrations. I thought the story here was ok, but a little generic. However I really didn’t enjoy the illustrations at all. The colors used are drab and dreary, with the heavy use of browns and grays giving the illustrations a dingy and dirty quality. The characters also have a cheap animation style feel to them which I really don’t enjoy. We definitely prefer Tractor Mac books to Otis books, so if you are looking for a sentient tractor and animal sidekicks series I’d recommend Tractor Mac over Otis.

Estimate of age level of interest: ages 3-6

Estimate of reading level: Lexile AD58OL

Brief description: Otis is a beautiful book about a tractor who loves being a contributing member of the farm he works on. He befriends a calf and they have many adventures around the farm. Until one day Otis is replaced by a newer bigger tractor on the farm. He is alone and forgotten until his friend the calf is in trouble and needs help. I enjoyed the theme that friendship is what saves the day in the end. I think friendship and love should always win at the end of the day.

Brief discussion of why it fits into the particular genre identified. It is longer (40 pages) and has more words than a picture book.

Otis by Loren Long
Since I can remember, I have loved the story of Otis and his calf. This touching story has dark and beautifully done illustrations that sets the mood for the heart felt ending. Otis, a little tractor, finds a friend in an unexpected place, the stall beside him. The little calf can only sleep to Otis’s puff. When the farmer buys a new tractor, he abandons Otis and plans to take the calf away. The calf runs away and ends up stuck in mud. Otis is the only one who can save the calf and they remain friends forever. This book would be great for helping kids understand parts of a story. Being able to identify these components helps children write their own story lines in the future.

I picked this up for the Popsugar 2020 Reading Challenge prompt of "book you picked because the title caught your attention". See, my middle name is Otis. Besides the elevator company, I rarely see the name Otis while I'm out and about. When I saw it on a kid's book I had to read it.

This Otis is a farm tractor. He becomes friends with a baby cow. According to Goodreads, this is the first in a series about Otis the tractor. Good for Loren Long putting the Otis name out there. I grew up hating my middle name but I've grown to accept it. Maybe some Otis will come across this book and swell with pride because he saw his name on a book.

I base my review of this book on the opinions of my 4-5 yr old students. We don’t have time at the end of each unit to reread all the stories on review wk so I ask the students to vote on their favorites to reread. I’ve only taught this book in PreK for 2 yrs, but Otis has been a winner both years. The students can relate and connect with Otis through his ups and downs and celebrate with him when he is able to help a friend when “bigger and stronger” just isn’t what helps. Otis is easy to love and helps my students easily understand what it means to be a good friend and how good it feels to contribute to a community. ❤️
