Welcome to the small town of Latham, Washington, where coffee shop owner Janie Bruce is up to her elbows in coffee and criminals.
When part-time employee and video game designer Phil Straynim is found dead, Janie steps into the role of sleuth to solve his murder, but there’s a new lead detective in town.
Detective Rosson Monroe seems to be taking his sweet time solving Phil’s murder and Janie can’t stand to see her friend’s killer roam free. As she goes head to head with the new detective, Janie realizes she might have met her match.
The leaves are falling as fast as suspects are popping up, but with a little luck and a few lattes, Janie’s determine to uncover the truth of her friend’s death.
I enjoyed meeting Janie and her friends at the senior center and it was cute how Janie's friend Arthur that she'd talked into coming to the center kinda hit it off with a woman who started volunteering there. Janie and detective Ross were a good match, but she was definitely not the type to give up just because he told her to, and he somehow learned to respect that. Parts of the book seemed to drag a bit for me, or maybe it just seemed like it took forever to get anywhere on the case--probably a lot like real life cases.
I hadn't guessed whodunit and that was one tense showdown! I'm sure Janie was pretty grateful to have someone on her side who informed the perp he was a very good shot. The ending was pretty cute, and I'm curious enough about further adventures that I'll probably borrow the next book on KU when it comes out.
This is a "new to me" author, and after reading her debut book, I am looking forward to much more from this author. The plot is well thought out and written, the protagonist characters are quite intriguing, the antagonist character was surprising, and the supporting characters all had interesting roles. I definitely recommend this book and hope to see more from this author.
What a fun book! Loved the setting (I love coffee!! And coffee shops!). The author really described things so well, I felt like I knew the characters! I can’t wait for the sequel!!!
