⇏ღ☙Back to You❧ღ⇍ Almost every single night, Yoon Hayoung dreams of her first love from ten years ago, who died in a tragic bus crash that she never forgot. She had always had an unrequited love for him, yet he never noticed her and was always with Jieun, a girl who was mysteriously tied to his life. So when Hayoung goes on a blind date with a man named Eunjae, the two both spend their time reminiscing over their first loves. But then the two of them end up in a bus crash and wake up ten years earlier. Hayoung and Eunjae have a second chance at love during their high school years, but Eunjae is wary to mess with fate where Hayoung is ardent. As Hayoung experiences the flavour of youth as well as getting to know the boy she has always loved, will messing with fate turn out for the better or worse?
Back to You have been a part of my daily life for four months now. The anticipation of settling on my couch and using the daily pass to read the next episode is a part of my routine. It's one of those webtoons that I am unintentionally and emotionally invested in. I spend time at school chatting with other girls about this webtoon and the characters. The premise is well-known and often used. But the characters are what really bring life to the story.
Hayoung is an empathetic, brave, and kind protagonist who never succumbs to the stereotypes of a helpless damsel in distress or a hopeless romantic. She's an instantly likeable protagonist who, throughout several parts of the series, has never once fallen into the annoying cliches that typically happen in romances. What I love so much about Hayoung is that she is level-headed and not overbearing. The heartache and grief she felt over Jaehyun's fate were laid out clearly in order to help the readers understand how important he was to her. Hayoung is more mentally mature than the other high schoolers and tends to make logical decisions rather than stupid ones that add "RoManTiC TeNsIoN."
Eunjae is my favourite character. He cares deeply for some of his peers but tends not to be so outspoken about them. He's a character who really internalises his feelings rather than externalises them, but he also has his own unrequited love. He sticks by Hayoung's side as a loyal friend, comforts her when she needs it, and tells her when she's out of line. He's not the nicest male love interest, but once Hayoung gets to really know him, she realises he is sincere and thoughtful. I love how he never falls into generic male lead tropes about becoming toxic and possessive!
Jieun is a character who really gets on my nerves; I would love to see her humanised more, though I wonder if I will regret stating that. I don't necessarily want to understand her. Jaehyun was a likeable character who was kind and caring as well as friendly. It was really sweet to see him and Hayoung bond, but truth be told, I'm an Eunjae x Hayoung shipper. This webtoon/manhwa is packed with heartache, friendship, and the beauty and pain of first love, with a captivating cast of characters and storyline! ✔️PLOT ✔️PLOT TWISTS ✔️CHARACTERS
my first read for the year is a webtoon !! (´◡`) i was planning on having one of the books from my current reads to be the first one i finish for this year but oh well, things just don't go according to plan whenever i urge the universe to make them happen.
this is the first webtoon i finished from my long list of daily pass stories i consume on the webtoon app c:
as a reader who picks up any new releases and sticks with it when i like the story, i started reading this one when it was first translated but ended up finishing it when it became a daily pass.
the story explores first loves, time loops, what could have beens, and a little bit slice of life. i liked the way the art exudes warmth, how the dialogues between the characters flowed, and how for some of the scenes — i'm not able to predict how it would end.
this turned out to be a refreshing and light-hearted read for me though it also tackled themes on losing a loved one and what comes after for those left behind. overall, i loved the storytelling, the art, and everything about this webtoon!
here are some of my favorite quotes:
"First loves are special, not because they're the first person you ever loved. It's because in those memories, the past you is in it."
"...but all this, it's just meaningless. We went through a lot together and ended up together."
3.5 stars. Decent story, although the very end was a little confusing as it gives us both endings, which partly weakens the main story. Review for the whole series.
