Hmm… semi satisfied unpopular review is heating up in the oven and ready to be served in few minutes!

Honestly I could love this book a little more and I could be more patient with the unreasonable actions the main character has taken but my expectations were too high after reading the previous brilliant work of Melonie Johnson. I even passed to read the blurb of this book after seeing the author’s name and this vivid- enchanted cover! So I was expecting so much more!

My first hesitation comes with the heroine. Nope, I didn’t like Kat. I understand why she made a perfect man list after dealing with enormous heartbreak but come on: Mick O’Sullivan was great catch from the beginning even though they’ve met under mortal and casket-y circumstances! Especially some of her decisions made me scream and feel a quite itchy urge to slap her and Mike turned into a doormat even though he’s a consultant and he should easily understand her wrongful and unhealthy patterns from miles away.

It was still swoon worthy, lighthearted and enjoyable reading. But my disconnection with the heroine affected my judgment.

So I’m giving my solid three stars. I still love the author’s writing style and I hope she’ll write more tolerable characters just like she has done before. I’m still looking forward to read more books of her in near future.

Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press/ St. Martin’s Griffin for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.

Too Wrong to be Right by Melonie Johnson
Contemporary romance / romcom.
Technically the second full length novel in a series although it can be read as a stand-alone. The other two friends from their Friday night get togethers show up only briefly here but are mentioned often.
Prior connected books
Too Good to be Real, July 2021
Two Nights to Believe, novella from anthology Tinsel and Tatas, October 2021

When Kat gets dumped by her boyfriend, she decides she’s done following the high emotions of her past relationships. She’s going to look for a different type. Someone with characteristics she admires rather than lusts after. Pursuing a contract for the flower shop she works for, gives her the perfect opportunity to put her plan into motion. She meets Mick, and is immediately attracted to him. But he’s too much like her past. Kat decides his brother Joe would be a better fit for her future, so she puts Mick in the friend zone.

Enjoyable and entertaining. Poor Kat is envious of her two best friends and their new relationships. Getting dumped again, makes her think she wants, and can plan a different type of relationship future. And poor Mick! He’ll do whatever he thinks will make Kat happy, even if that means stepping aside. Mick was adorable and so sweet. I know he wanted the best for both Kat and his brother, but oh, it was sad watching his heart break as he stood on the sidelines.
A great cast of side characters include Mary-Kate, Laura, Ronnie, Jojo the hedgehog, Seamus the cockatoo, and the grandmothers of Kat and Mick. They all added colorful backgrounds and amusing commentary throughout the novel. I’m hoping a couple of these, including Joe, get their own hea’s soon.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

Tropes: strangers to lovers and friends to lovers

I was immediately drawn to this book because of its gorgeous cover but unfortunately, I found myself over the characters and the conflict halfway in. When we meet Kat, she has recently been dumped and has sworn off the typical guys she’s dated in hopes of finding Mr. Right. Enter Mick, who Kat meets in a meet cute straight out of a movie. Kat and Mick have instant chemistry but Kat believes that Mick is too her “old” type and instead convinces herself to pursue Mick’s brother which creates such a strange dynamic that I couldn’t get on board with.

The first half of this book was so fun but Kat’s pursuit of Mr. Right quickly became tedious for me. The third act break up felt so abrupt on Kat’s part and by that point I was no longer rooting for Kat and Mick as a couple.

2.5 stars

One of the things I loved the most about Too Wrong to Be Right was the fact that it had me practically in tears from laughing from the very first chapter. I love it when an author shares my brand of humor, and I can tell from this one book that Melonie Johnson definitely does! I also loved that there is a lot of focus on a foul-mouthed bird plus an adorable hedgehog, and even though I am a crazy cat lady at heart, I love all animals and these two were a ray of sunshine throughout the story. Kat's friends were smart and funny, and there were a lot of secondary characters that I loved with all my heart. I could understand what Kat was getting at with her list and wanting to date a different type of man from what her usual was, but girl get it together. If you read this, you will see what I mean...

I really enjoyed the audiobook although I didn't always love Juliana Solo's narration for Kat. It wasn't actually her per se, but there were times I think the editing was a little off. I did love her voice though and thought she as well as Cody Gordon for Mick were excellent choices. The book did end up dragging out a bit too long for my liking and it felt like it could have been about 50 pages shorter, but I loved the humor and the lightness of the story so much that it wasn't really a huge factor in my enjoyment. I would love to see this made into a movie, and the meet cute at a funeral home, especially with the situation it happens in, would be HILARIOUS to see played out onscreen. Overall, if you are looking for a lighter, funny, and sometimes nostalgic read (hello 90s rom-com references!), I would gladly recommend Too Wrong to Be Right.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

A joyful, humorous love story between a woman determined to find her Mr. Right and a man who hasn’t yet figured out how to reach for what he wants out of life. Kat has a check list for her perfect match, and Mick doesn’t fit the bill. Mick has grown comfortable filling in whatever spaces the world opens up for him rather than making his own space, a trait that doesn’t mesh well with a woman who wants to be able to push against her love interest, and have him push back. With the help of a few meddling friends and family members, two delightful grandmas, and two fabulous pets, Kat rethinks her check list, and Mick reclaims his personal agency.
.
As with Too Good to be Real, Johnson speckles her story with popular rom-com references that will appeal to fans of the genre, as well as punny banter and lightly antic scenarios that test her characters while keeping the tone upbeat and smile-inducing. The hedgehog has a costume designer. The meet cute involves a casket. And supportive friends are always close by with a rom-com cued up and a new cocktail recipe to try. A perfect fit for readers looking for a brisk and buoyant love story with plenty of ha-ha’s, and no shortage of heart.

4.5⭐ Rounded up.
This book was a lot of fun to read.
I only knocked a half star off for how the FMC acted like a petulant child instead of chatting through the misunderstanding. Up until that point I really liked all the characters. The two MCs are fun, but there are a lot of family and friends in the background that were also nicely developed.
Plus, there is a cutie hedgehog and a sassy bird.
This is the first pick for my new local romance book club and I cannot wait to discuss it.
I would very highly recommend this book!!!

Simply put, this was wonderful!

Too Wrong to Be Right is a warm and wacky story that follows Kat Kowalski, an aspiring flower shop owner, as she makes a list of qualities she hopes to find in a potential Mr. Right after a recent breakup. On the same day her relationship ends, she acquires a pet hedgehog and meets Mick O'Sullivan, a lovable weirdo that runs his family's funeral business with his siblings. Following their unconventional meet-cute, the two form a fast friendship and I truly could not get enough of them.

Going in, I truly didn't have any expectations for this book since I had never read any of Johnson's novels before this one. But I knew I was in for a good time after just a few chapters!

In equal measure, Too Wrong to Be Right had its silly moments where I couldn't help but giggle and its sweet moments that made me blush. Ngl, I think I need a Mick of my own! He had the cutest personality and I really appreciated that the book was dual POV, giving the audience the chance to get a look inside his head as he wrestled with his feelings for Kat.

One of my favorite elements was the focus paid to Kat's fears surrounding her future. As her closest friends begin to move away or get married and her own career is on the verge of change, Kat is feeling confused and scared. As a woman in my 20s, those feelings felt honest and relatable. I wanted to jump inside the story to give her a big hug during those parts.

After loving this romance, I am absolutely going to check out more of Johnson's work to see what else she has to offer.

3.5 rounded up to 4.
Let's start off by saying I didn't really connect with the main female character, she's flighty, insecure and always has a sob story about not being able to keep a boyfriend.
Rom Coms are supposed to be light reads for when you want to read something light and not really have to think about it.
Not so in this one, there is a lot going on. Our mfc gets dumped right at the beginning of the book but he dumps his hedgehog on her too. The hedgehog is a positive in the book, he's a cute addition.
She meets a new guy but has sworn off men for now she wants him to be her wingman and nothing more. With more than casual glances and witty and flirty banter it doesn't stay casual for long.
I didn't really connect with the mmc either he's sort of a pushover and goes along with whatever she says. When the mfc checks her list of male qualifications for a boyfriend and thinks she may have hit it off with his brother and spends time with him he doesn't step in to stop it or say she is his.
A cussing bird that has no problem insulting everyone adds flavor to the story.
I think the book has filler and could have done with about 100 pages less as parts of it do drag. I also thought we would spend a lot of time in the floral shop out mfc works in but barely anything.

Kat is a florist with dreams of opening her own shop. With a degree in psychology, Mick isn’t quite sure where he fits in at his family’s funeral home. When the two literally collide over a casket, they form a solid friendship. Despite their mutual attraction, Kat is determined to keep it that way because, after her latest bad breakup, she has created a list that perfectly describes her “Mr Right” and, unfortunately for Mick, he doesn’t quite meet the qualifications.

It may be weird to describe a book set partially in a funeral home as fun, but this was so fun! From the “meet cute” to the banter to Kat’s adorable pet hedgehog, JoJo, this had so much to love and laugh over. I absolutely loved both Kat and Mick—they were hilarious and kept finding themselves in such absurd situations. Also, both MCs are dealing with their own set of insecurities/issues that makes them very relatable. I really loved the overall cast of characters as well—some were quirky, others eccentric—and it all made for a great story.

The only thing that really bugged me about this was the miscommunication. That is probably one of my least favorite tropes, but both characters deal with a lot of insecurity so it did make sense as to why they reacted the way they did. The ending wasn’t super realistic, but I’m all for a HEA! 4.5/5

I completely loved this story. It's a very slow-burn romance, but in all the best ways. I connected with Kat on so many levels. She is such a hot mess in the relationship/life department and I can relate to so many of her struggles. But not just her - all the characters personalities leap from the pages and right into your heart. Especially, the animal kingdom variety. Seamus, you foul mouthed bird, you are the absolute best. I love you with my whole f*king heart. Get this book on your must read list!

Kat’s boyfriend of six months tells her he’s leaving for an audition in Vancouver to be the host of a reality dating show, asks her to watch his pet hedgehog Jojo, then tells her that he’s never coming back. Mick, with his older brother and younger sister, runs the family funeral home, where Mick hasn’t quite found his place.

After a meet-cute worthy of a rom-com, Kat and Mick become friends. Each is attracted to the other, but they keep it to themselves. He values her friendship above the risk of more. Meanwhile, Kat confides in Mick that she’s created a list of the attributes for her perfect guy, since she’s picked so many losers in the past. Kat really likes Mick, but starting a relationship based on physical attraction is what doomed her in the past, so instead, she looks to Mick’s brother Joe, who checks off every feature on her Mr. Perfect list.

I absolutely adored Too Wrong to Be Right! Melonie Johnson nails the friends-to-lovers trope with Kat and Mick, bringing readers humor and all the feels. I knew I’d love this book from the beginning when Kat spends time with her grandma, evoking longing for my own Granny, making me deeply nostalgic. I could feel the love between the pair, and I had a few tears in my own eyes.

Ms. Johnson continues to evoke emotions when she brings the Kat and Mick close to more and then pulls them away. The longing is intense, and my heart would race with each kiss that left Kat and Mick yearning for more. As this dance continues, they grow to be close friends and confidants. It’s so obvious to the reader, as well as the pair’s families, that they are falling in love, yet each chooses not to risk more. It was frustrating (in a good way) to watch them each wait for a sign from the other to indicate they wanted more.

Too Wrong to Be Right is a joy from beginning to end. A true rom-com, it made me laugh and played with my heartstrings. Mick and Kat’s story evoked a wide array of emotions and left me contented. I highly recommend!

I think Kat was a toxic nightmare and Mick was a simp who should have walked away from her. This book was a whole lot of no for me, sadly. The character interactions were cute enough to keep me reading, but I cringed so much at this relationship that I was supposed to root for. She’s on a date with his brother at his family’s holiday party and he just… is okay with that?? There’s being a forgiving person, and then there’s Mick. He just lets her do whatever she wants even though he could totally call her out on toxic behavior because he’s supposed to be a licensed counselor and should probably see the signs of how toxic she is. But no, she’s really hot and he just lets her walk all over him. This book is gross.

So fun! Kat is feeling defeated by continually attracting the wrong men in her life. Now with a list of perfect qualities to look for, she's ready to finally meet her Mr. Right.

The hilarious meet-cute was the perfect icebreaker into this romance. Kat being a florist and Mick the co-owner of a funeral home, it was such a clever mesh of two careers.

With his Irish roots and mismatched socks, I adored Mick O'Sullivan. His laidback vibe, willing to sit in the friend zone purely to see Kat happy, was too precious.

There's a bit of a love triangle. Mr. Right vs Mr. Wrong, you could say. And I loved it. It's one of those situations where I can acknowledge how frustrating Kat is at times; I wanted to scream at her to simply see how wonderful Mick is. But the chemistry and slow, slow burning tension made it all worthwhile. There's a great snowed-in scene, too!

The touches of friendship, family, and a salty cockatoo were the cherry on top.

(heat level: a couple open-door scenes, explicit details)

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

If you are wondering if you should read this book- I say yes, you should!

I will admit, I picked this up on a whim purely because I saw that a Hedgehog was part of the story. But I ended up loving this book and plan on getting it the day it comes out in 2023. This story follows Kat, a florist in Chicago who can't find Mr. Right. She's a rom-com movie lover who always thought she would find her man before the rest of her friend group. Instead, she discovers that her friends have paired up and are moving forward while she is stuck. After a breakup that ends in the acquisition of a Hedgehog, Kat vows off her standard type of men and dreams of Mr. Right. Enter Mich- absolutely her type, so he must be Mr. Wrong. But he just might lead her to Mr. Right.

Mich is the third wheel in his family business. While he tries to fit in with the funeral parlor business, he just seems to have no solid purpose. After a meet ugly with Kat, maybe a new friendship might turn his life around. If the fact she thinks his straight-laced brother if Mr. Right doesn't kill him first.

Overall, this book is full of shenanigans from start to finish. Despite that, I found that the story and its characters were all fleshed out and authentic. I laughed, cried, and truly felt the inspiration from older rom-coms. I will say the drama was surprisingly low from what I expected. It ran on the slow burn side and wasn't super spicy, but the tension and the authentic friends-to-lovers dynamic was completely worth it. I will admit, this started as a 4-star review, but as I'm writing it and thinking back on it, I changed it to a 5-star. I just really enjoyed this book. My one complaint is that this is the first book that I read, and I could tell that the friends had fleshed out romances that I had missed. But that just means I need to go back and read the first two now...

Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin's Griffin, and Melonie Johnson for the opportunity to do an ARC read for this title. My thoughts and opinions on this work are my own.

Poor Kat, the FMC, get dumped by her boyfriend and becomes the new owner of an adorable hedgehog. Jojo becomes her pet when said boyfriend flees to Canada for a reality show audition. She vows that she will never date anymore charismatic assholes. So she comes up with a list of attributes to find Mr. Right. She meets Mick at a funeral home while setting up florals for a funeral from the shop that she manages. He is everything that she thinks she does not want: handsome, snarky, and kind of just drifting through life at the moment. She also meets her Joe, Mick's older brother, and the funeral director. He checks all the boxes on her list, but doesn't give her that spark. Kat through a series of misadventures, including a bloody concussion for Mick (hilarious situation), finds that Mick just might be the person that she was looking for all along.

I absolutely loved this title. I knew this book was going to be a winner for me when I read the scene in the funeral home when Kat almost fell into a coffin with a cadaver and Mick pulled her out in time. I must have an absolutely morbid sense of humor, but I could not stop laughing. Kat and Mick's chemistry was on point. It almost ended up being a love triangle story, but thankfully did not go that route. I absolutely adored all the side characters. Jojo the hedgehog and Seamus the cockatoo get honorable mention as well for being so damn funny and adorable.

My first Melonie Johnson novel, thank you to NetGalley.

I enjoyed this read for what it was. Light, funny, nothing to be taken too seriously, but quite enjoyable.

Pros: themes carried through out, character definition was solid, lots of jokes, the setting was clearly wrote by someone who knows Chicago and it’s culture. Good word usage, things didn’t get repetitive, and I really enjoyed how they showcased one individual with a family and one without but wasn’t pivotal in their dynamic, plus the hedgehog was a cute and unique twist.

Cons: I wish Mick had discovered his own pitfalls for himself, Kat seemed to come to understand the roll she played in pushing him away. Additionally, I wish MK had told Kat about Micks insecurity about his brother, it would have helped her understand the whole thing wasn’t about her. She needed more development in that regard anyways considering that while she was a pillar in her community she was a fairly selfish friend to Mick the whole way through. Also, I would have loved to see a flash of Tad later, maybe as the host on TV and her total lack of desire to ever go back to something without substance again, because as a self proclaimed romantic she really was making bad choices.

I will definitely take the chance to read another Melonie Johnson book, the characters were given a good realness that helps you see them as relatable.

“We met over a dead body, it was definitely not a meet cute.”

This book is definitely going on my top shelf of books I've enjoyed.

I normally don't enjoy books with hints of spice, versus quite a lot of spice, but the story in this book made up for it for me.

Kat has been recently broken up with by another "-ad" (Tad, not Chad) and he so graciously decided to essentially make her adopt his pet Hedgehog, JoJo. I can't tell you how douchey this man is just simply from the first chapter.

Mick is just trying to make it by working at his families funeral home, trying to fit in to the mold of his siblings to fill any gaps he can to help out.

These two meet over a corpse, literally, in the funeral home while Kat is trying to deliver flowers from the flower shop she works at. However, Kat is looking for Mr. Right, not Mr. Kind of Right or Mr. Wrong. Mick doesn't necessarily check the boxes on Mr. Right but his brother might...

This book is a whirlwind of emotions, love, loss, and family. Adding in a little bit of spice, it makes for a great story.

Thank you to NetGalley and Melonie Johnson for this eARC. This is a willing and honest review.

This was more of a 4.5 for me. I loved this book! It is a cute rom com, the characters (including the parrot and hedgehog) are so fun and witty. I loved the back and forth between Kat and Mick. I do have to say the beginning was a bit harder for me to get through but by the 3rd chapter I was hooked. I liked that this book had enough to not be the same as all other romance novels with the banter and storyline in it. Would def recommend this book to others. A great follow up to Too Good to Be Real! I might even have enjoyed it more! I love that the author continues her trend of including animals in her world building. Seamus, the foul-mouthed cockatoo and JoJo, the adorable hedgehog were such charming additions to an already loveable cast of characters. This one is both sexy and sweet and sure to delight readers like it did me.

Kat Kowalski, a florist with the dream of opening up her own and unique flower shop, has sworn off dating guys based on how they look. When she runs into Mick O’Sullivan, one of the owners of a local funeral home, the pair become friends—friends who feel oddly attracted to each other. Her instincts always lead to Mr. Wrongs and now she’s set on finding Mr. Right. But what if Mr. Right on paper isn’t right for her, while Mr. Wrong in theory is?

I will admit I just read several other rom coms that knocked it out of the park so in comparison to those this one was a bit of a let down. I think the biggest disconnect for me was with Kat. I didn't really feel like I understood her or who she was until further into the book and by that point I was a little checked out. There were some cute moments and good banter but just an average read in my opinion.

A romantic comedy where the main characters meet in a funeral home? Sold.

I read Too Good to be Real and was excited for Too Wrong to be Right. Like the first book, we get a unique premise, some quirky side characters, lots of funny moments, and super cute animals. But instead of an insta-love story, this one is much more of a slow burn. I really enjoyed watching Kat and Mick fall for each other - which often literally included falling - ha. I did find the way they held back their thoughts and fought their feelings incredibly frustrating, like I wanted to shout at both of them, but it also made total sense for their characters, Kat's trying not to keep going after guys she's attracted to on a physical level, so of course she's going to push Mick away - and Mick, um, he is definitely more of a beta and not one to go after what he wants, not with Kat or his family. He was so sweet though and eventually started to get a clue even if it took his sister to basically shove him in the right direction. I laughed a lot and smiled at the end. Just what I want from a rom-com.

Shout out to the grandmas in the story. They need their own podcast.

4.5 rounded up!

Thank you to @netgalley and Griffin Publisher for this copy in exchange for an honest review. This was such an adorably sweet read!
Kat is recently single and working in a florist shop with big dreams. Upon delivering a boutonnière to a funeral home, she runs into Mick (one of the owners of the funeral home). Will this spark friendship? Love? Business? Guess you’ll have to read and see.

💫Things I Liked:
- Unique Meet-cute
- The combination of business and pleasure
- Polish references
- Animals! - JoJo the hedgehog and Seamus the parrot were adorable and funny!

💫Things I Didn’t Like:
- The use of the pet name “princess.” This felt like a weird add-on that seemed unnecessary to me lol.
- The “problem”- not quite miscommunication as much as a LACK of communication.

💫Read This If You’re Into:
- Romcom references
- He falls first
- Found family
- The Undertaking of Hart & Mercy by Megan Bannen

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/(5)

This is a very fast & fun read. If you enjoy romcoms, this is definitely for you. There's the "meet cute" at a casket, the supportive work friends, the supportive life friends, some supportive family (Grandma on Kat's side, everyone on Mick's), long line of bad choices in relationships, & a hedgehog. Kat knows exactly what she wants for her future & has lists to show for it. Mick is the peacemaker in the family business & doesn't know what he wants from life. Kat is put together (most of the time) & Mick doesn't care about his appearance. On paper they don't add up. Mick's older brother, Joe, fits that bill. Highly recommend reading this one to see how it plays out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

This book is hilarious and had me laughing from the opening line. (cozy cock anyone?) 😅 I loved all of the characters. Our FMC Kat is recently single after her boyfriend leaves her and his pet hedgehog behind to follow his love show-hosting dreams in Canada.
Kat decides it is time to stop dating Mr. Wrong and sets off with a list of what she wants. Enter into the picture Mitch and his mismatched socks, oh, and his foulmouth bird.

The chemistry is there from the start but Kat wants to avoid another Mr. Wrong situation, and place Mitch into a friend-zone city. But as time goes on, connections get stronger and lines get blurred, maybe Mitch O’Sullivan is just what Kat needs after all.

This read is:
funny
engaging
lovable characters
light spice
finding somebody who loves you for you
feel good vibes

I really enjoyed this book. The beginning was a little hard to get into for me because I felt Kat was a little short sighted with her friends. Especially because she is a boss lady and successful in other aspects of her life. Once we learned a little more about Kat, it did make more sense though.

I loved all the quirky and fabulous supporting characters in this story as well. Even the pets! I am kind of hoping Melonie Johnson makes two more books about Mick’s siblings finding love.

You know a book is great when you drive past a funeral home in real life and for a split second wonder if you could find love inside!! (Haha)

This was my first Melonie Johnson book and I can say with certainty that I will continue reading her books!
