The people who should be saving the Earth ignore Jason Asano's warnings and choose to loot the house as it burns down around them. He lacks the strength to save the world himself, but resolves to do it anyway, impossible be damned.
The impossible, in this case, means seizing a power that no mortal should touch. It's a choice from which there is no turning back, and marks Jason's first step into a wider cosmos that he is not yet ready to face.
Holding the fate of two worlds in his hands, Jason must decide for himself what home truly means.
Thank all that is holy that this arc is FINALLY done.
Book four, five and six should have been one long book. Stretching them out to a trilogy was tedious and repetitive. This was never more apparent than with this book. The story arc was needed for overall narrative advancement, but dragging it out over several books was not.
What is it with the multiple of 3 with this author. The third book in the series was the worst out of the first 3 books and this one is the worst out of the last 3 books. While I would still rate the series at 5 stars this book was a big disappointment. It felt like everything the author built up in the last 2 books was torn down in this book. This book really didn't need to be written. I didn't feel it added anything to the overall story. I was really disappointed in the direction the author took this story. All there was to the story was Jason trying to save the world. Is there ever a chance for him to be happy? I hope when he gets back to the next world things will be better again.
Generally still very much a fan, I just struggle with Earth's storyline, and, as Farrah says, watching Jason pay the price again and again until it's on the edge of costing his sanity.
I want to thank you all who subscribe to the Youtube channel!!
Hey friends welcome back to another review. Hang tight, this is going to be a good one.
So lets talk. Book 3, what a good ending IMO. I really enjoyed Jason's and the teams fight against the builder. If you don't already know.. I hate the builder.. A lot. He's a piece of crap, entitled and immature for being a great astral being. The other great astral beings are alright in my book.
Books 4-6 were really rather interesting in my opinion. It deals with Jason coming back to earth and introducing magic to his family (as if they weren't already shocked he was alive) while casually saving the world from potentially exploding due to....get ready... THE BUILDER (seriously what a piece of crap this dude is). anyway, these books were great for me. It brought us to a completely different setting which for me was a palate cleanser from the highly magical world we were in the first three books.
The fantastical elements were great for me these books: 5/5 The world building was superb: 5/5 The action was out of this world (get it?... out of this world??? no? ok): 5/5
go read this series, you'll thank me for it later on.
It suffers from much the same issues as the third book (i.e. ending of the first story arc) only even worse. The author has his eyes set on the next story arc but seems incapable pf getting the story there in a satisfying or organic manner.
The vast majority of this "book" is the worst kind of filler- no tension, no world building, no character development, nothing worthwhile happening at all. At the same time the story needs all characters to change in major really consequential ways but that all happens off page because it would be challenging to write.
If you are inclined to continue the series, you're probably still better off skipping this installment entirely. The outcome will be laboriously explained in the next part anyway and seeing it summarized in a few paragraphs might let you believe it happened in a believable and interesting way.
After reading, what I believe is halfway through the series (at least I hope so, having bad premonition that if HWFWM would have more than 12 books it eventually would either go awry or in indefinite hiatus) I can safely say - the author is doing great job in growing as a writer. Annoying things from the past seem to be gone, seemingly shallow & purposeless actions and/or behavior of Jason are shun light upon. The jokes and carelessness has depth now, which I won't elaborate upon to not mark a "spoiler" checkbox. While the plot isn't braided beyond measures - it is easy to grasp, yet not trivial. We're given hints about something beyond our knowledge, that I suppose, we're not meant to know yet, and strangely, it doesn't seem frustrating - more like a heads up to expect unexpected (though as for book 6 it ends on chapter 460, and currently there are 653!! available on royal road). Now about the plot and the MC I guess. Is Jason chuuni? Yeah. Is he living up to be one? Well, he's made to be slightly over-intelligent for his own good, even though from time to time he's being put to place. For me it feels a bit like breaking the fourth wall - yet not in comic-style. Do I care about characters? Hell yeah. Over books 5-6 it feels like this series has grown mature, the jokes are still there, yet there's time for reflection. Binarity of actions and consequences feel more like a spectrum now - which helps immersion a lot, especially given plot anchors in last 3 books. I wish I wasn't garbage in writing the reviews, but to sum up. I've got what I wanted for the price I paid - uneasy yet strangely pleasure sensation of longing for a world that I've never experienced. The disconnection from reality, that made me sad whenever I had to go back doing "real-world" business. I would expect nothing less from fantasy book to call it good, regardless of sub-genres it belongs to. Waiting for book 7, as author has mentioned the chapters are being refined before being put in the books!
Ooof sad to so this is the worst of the series. We start off with a jason which unlike in the other books didn’t balance his self righteousness with a witty sarcasm instead he kind of just wallowed until another character told him to snap out of it. And honestly for the first time in the series jason was truly obnoxious. Also it feels like all the plot points from the last were just dropped? The whole vampire battery to get to gold? Dropped! Jasons family situation? Dropped! A prime example of this is the final chunk in the book where it seems like jason has this really cool plan to betray all the people helping him in the dome and theres even like a turn to camera and smirk knowingly moment and nope a nightmare witch dropped them and it had nothing to do with jason. I bought this immediately after it came out because i was so excited after LOVING the last books but this book was hard to get through
This volume lacks the soul of previous works. A lot of time is wasted in early chapters re-explaining literally what just happened in the previous chapter. The main character is extremely dour throughout the whole book and his usual wittiness is severely lacking throughout. There is very little ‘fun’ in this very short book, and the remaining characters are poor substitutes for the mc’s adventuring party which have been absent for far too many books. It saddens me that the next book has been flagged as the final in the series and yet there hasn’t been any real ‘meat’ to the story for quite a while. We can only hope that the finale is much larger than this short wrap up of life on earth and that the mc regains his positive if arrogant attitude for the last book. The lack of zingers in this book is keenly felt.
Still just barely treading water in the bog of the Earth storyline. Just a slog. The only bright light in this one was the numerous Epilogue chapters sort of explained why they exist and what is going to happen next. Just not that good. Again it left me feeling that this is way too close to the original work as a web serial and not nearly as polished as a well written and thought out novel.
I like this series but honestly, I've lost hold of what all the different terms mean over the time period it took me to get this far. Unfamiliar terms like: Astral space Proto space Spirit domain Transformation zone Dimensional membrane Gestalt entity
...and on and on. It's getting to be too much to expect a reader to remember all this stuff. I can pick up a gist of what they are from vague memories of the past books and context but most of the time I just don't bother trying to figure out where the fk these characters are anymore and just take events as they happen.
The cast of characters has gotten incredibly long as well. It's a bit hard to keep straight in your head who is who. There are two different worlds and both worlds need the full complement of supporting, side, companion, and adversary characters so by book 6, it gets overwhelming.
Combine these two problems, and there's just so many names and terms swirling in your head.
The power creep for Jason has gotten a bit out of hand. It feels like there are no stakes cause Jason can just handle anything and beat anyone... and if he can't, then someone or something else will defeat whatever baddy for him or persuade them not to annihilate him.
I'm glad the Earth saga is ending cause I didn't enjoy it much. It got too convoluted. Take me back to fantasyland pls.
Just for my own entertainment, let's see how many characters I can name/remember. They ALL are definitely given names in the book, I just don't recall all of them. I listen on audiobook so spelling may be off.
Jason Asano Shade Gordon Colin Fara Hurin Rupert Remor Gary Gary's new diamond rank mentor Amir Belinda Clive Standish Clive's familiar (bonded? Idk) Sophie Wexler Danielle Geller Humphrey Geller Humphrey's bonded familiar Neil Jory Lorelei Magic society woman that Lorelei works for Thaddwick Mercer Ascia (? Jason's gf on Earth) Greg Kaito Asano Amy Asano Erica Asano Ian, Erica's husband. Don't remember last name. Emmie Asano Ken Asano Hiro Asano Yumi (?) Asano, J's grandma J's mom Akari Asano Akari's dad Akari's sister Akari's clan matriarch? The Builder The World Phoenix Goddess of Knowledge Dawn Shaco Anna Anna's wife Vermilion (Craig) Elizabeth the vampire Elie the vampire (el-LEE, not EL-ee. IYKYK) Spencer the old vampire Adrian Barbeaux Mr. North (don't remember his human name. I do remember his actual name of Noreth tho) Mrs. South (also has a real name but don't remember) Mr/Mrs. East Mr/Mrs. West (don't remember which is which) Detective who helped Erica ages ago Body guard of Hiro's... started with T... (Taico?) Goering (no idea how to spell that. The gold rank guy) Todd the necro The European girl and family who were saved by J. The reporter.
That's all I remember for this book (or maybe book 5 as well. They kinda blend together). I'm forgetting so many other named characters from the earlier books. Like the other adventurers who Jason often mingled with, the leader of the adventuring guild, leader of the magic society, the crime boss, Goddess of Knowledge's disciple girl...
THEY ALL HAVE PROPER NAMES
and some of them make rare but regular appearances. Like the Taico (?) guy.
Worst contained book so far, which I wont say is too much of a slight. This book is focused on plot, tossing Jason back into boss dungeons, often purposefully without anyone to talk to. I say it's not too much a slight because it really tells you how valued the characters and the relationships are. I would guess most would find the epilogue - side quests of his friends back home - are the best part of the whole book. It shows well developed characters we care about and an amazing world. Overall I'm glad we made it back to earth, but 2 books would have been better than 3. The eneding here skimming over the final 6 months was a blessed relief, not to be over mind you, but to be getting back to Palimustus. Worth getting thru and still a joy, but the worst so far.
Another great adventure and death for Jason change his perspective
Since his return to Earth from it’s twin planet Jason has worked to grow stronger through many means but some of those end up being trials of his very soul. He will change in ways he never anticipated or wanted and will lose much of what he held close before he finishes his work on Earth. He wants to go back to his adventuring party and friends there to complete his astral work and save both worlds. As Earth’s more powerful factions have all taken shots at him or his family he has slowly lost more than his patience, more than his compassion. Through all the challenges he faced on Earth he has grown his aura powers, his soul and his own abilities to the peak of what Earth’s magic levels allow in a short time. He will need to consolidate all he has learned to advance further. He just has to stabilize the worlds for the World-Phoenix and survive
Overall, I still enjoyed this book, but it was a bit of a slog to get through. The book was probably 25% setup for what comes next, 15% actually progressing and concluding the current story arc, and then 60% fluff.
I guess the banter between characters is a cornerstone of the series, but the longer things go, the more important it is to me that actual plot objectives are accomplished rather than simply moving from one random mob fight to the next and one item/skill description to the next.
Honestly, I'm just ready for this series to end and hope it does so within the next two books.
4 Stars for Narration by Heath Miller 3 Stars for Plot
The epilogues were my fav part. A nice surprise towards the end of the audiobook. There were several key plot developments in #6, but it was rather dry to read. I am looking forward to the next book. MC should be less depressed. Well, maybe. XD
concluded the earth saga of the story line. this was a shorter story line than the previous books. not sure if i like the resolutions. he just resolves thing by killing people and the point of the saga was to make amends with family and he ended up pushing them all away. might be prioritizing the found family but i cant believe that he is leaving his niece afraid of him.

I got to be honest that I was very disappointed with this book. It did not seem to complete the story of Jason on earth. The battles were more descriptions and he didn’t even fight the main gold ranker that killed his girlfriend. He died mysteriously. Jason’s family doesn’t seem to like him at the end. It was a total shift that I didn’t like. And no vampire war! I mean yes I didn’t expect him to stay for the full war but the author clearly set that up with the sun lamp and everything and then abandoned it. I wanted at least one good vampire vs Jason giant battle. Didn’t get much. I was disappointed but will read the next book to see what happens.
