Cross into the spirit realm with this thrilling supernatural debut about sisterhood and female defiance, perfect for fans of Kerri Maniscalco— inspired by lives of real teenage twin mediums in the 19th century.

—Nina LaCour, Printz Award–winning author of We Are Okay

Edie and Violet Bond know the truth about death. The seventeen-year-old twins are powerful mediums, just like their mother—Violet can open the veil between life and death, and Edie can cross into the spirit world. Now runaways, Edie and Violet are part of a traveling Spiritualist show, a tight-knit group of young women who demonstrate their real talents under the guise of communing with spirits. Each night, actresses, poets, musicians, and orators all make contact with spirits who happen to have something to say. . . notions that young ladies could never openly express. But when Violet’s act goes terribly wrong one night, Edie learns that the dark spirit responsible for their mother’s death has crossed into the land of the living. As they investigate the identity of her mysterious final client, they realize that someone is hunting mediums…and they may be next.Only by trusting in one another can the twins uncover a killer who will stop at nothing to cheat death.

4.25 Stars. This was a fun and entertaining read. While I would happily read paranormal, urban fantasy, or horror anytime of the year, something about reading them during October always puts me in a great mood. I live in New England where the fall and Halloween has always been highly celebrated so I just love this time of year and I’m happy to let reading of the spooky books begin. This book in particular is half paranormal/half magical realism, YA historical fiction. Since I do review a lot of LGBTQ+ books, I want to mention that this is not one of them. This has a light but cute YA m/f romance. What really attracted me to this book was the premise which I will go into more soon. I’m happy to say that this book was as good as I hoped and a very well written debut for Glaze.

I love this premise and the fact that this book was actually based on two real people. Glaze wrote about her great-grandmother Edie Bond and her twin sister Violet, who were mediums and part of the Spiritualist movement of the nineteenth century. I mean how cool is that and what a wonderful start to base a book around. You could tell that Glaze did lots of research and I felt like I was right back in the 1880’s. While of course this book was fiction, the fact of knowing I was reading about real twin sisters made the book that much more special for me.

I was really impressed with Glaze’s writing. I was surprised to find that this was her debut and it proved to me that she has a long fiction writing career ahead of her if she wants one. I found the book very easy to read and even the slower parts I found to be very interesting. I was into this book from page one. When it comes to the creepy scale I would say about a 3 or 4. Personally I would have loved something even higher. For me what I found to be the most creepy was tales of the sanitariums, which was all too real and hard to think about how many women were forced into them with no rights, but the paranormal parts themselves were not as creepy in my opinion and I could have used even more creepiness -but keep in mind I’m a horror fan.

In the end, this is an entertaining read that I would recommend to YA and historical fiction fans. This was a well done debut and a good book to get you in the mood for some October reads. I had a lot of fun with this and the fact that this book was based on two real twin sisters, just made the read even more fun for me. I would absolutely read another book by Glaze in the future and I can’t help but wonder if she picked up any talents passed down by her great-grandmother. Hey, maybe she already knows how well this book is going to do…

An ARC was kindly given to me for an honest review.

So to be totally honest, this was right up my alley. I love anything paranormal and historical fiction. ALSO Sisterly bond always gets me as my sister and I are really close.

Teenage runaways Edie and Violet are twins, save for Edie's blond almost white hair. This is due to her ability to pull back the Veil (threshold between life and death) and step into death. Violet acts as a true medium, a conduit for spirits to interact with the living through Violet. Makes sense they would join a traveling spiritualist act. Of course they have to deal with a reporter sniffing around and Edie does everything she can to deter him from the truth. All of that is forgotten when Violet's act goes terribly wrong, and Edie goes into death to investigate. Only then does she realize that the spirtualists who are going missing are in more danger than they realized. Getting help from an unlikely and (mostly) unwanted source (see what I did there? Because he's a reporter 🥁), Edie must trust him and her sister to uncover the truth about an unsolved mystery from their past that's come back to haunt them.

I think what I liked the most was that I could really tell how much research went into it. I also thought the backstory about the author's great-grandmother and her sister, the real Edie and Violet Bond was super interesting and there is definitely something haunting about that photograph. Also, as a theater professional myself, I can always tell when a book is written by a theater professional (idk what it is! But I can always tell!) so I was excited to read that Amanda Glaze has done it all. I think anyone who read and loved Charlie N Holmberg's "Spellbreaker" will love this! I loved this book so so much and I cannot wait for spooky season this year for it to officially come out! October cannot come fast enough *grabby hands*

The writing was good, the structure of t he story was good, but if you sell a book about twins to me... make it about twins???

Although both names are in the title and both girls are on the cover, this was not a book about twins; it was a book about A twin. We don’t follow both and most of the time, I wished we did.

I’d rather follow Violet and her new acting career if we ever get a sequel. Also, make her gay. Just because.

Now for some out of context content:

Laws writing about local news after quitting TMZ

description

Violet girl bossing while her sister becomes a thief

description

A redhead after being possessed by a cat

description

3.5/5 rounded up

Also, they'd both be swifties (Edie a Lover stan, Violet a Speak Now stan)

The second death of Edie and Violet bond was just as good as it's cover!! This cover is beautiful, and the book was just as enthralling. Was easy to read in one sitting. This was like a YA paranormal murder mystery all in one. It gave me night circus vibes, the two sisters are currently with a group of all women that put on shows relating to their abilities with spirits beyond the veil. All with really cool abilities/concepts. Edie can pass between the veil, while her twin sister Violet can call spirits to her side on the living. I also really liked how this book tackled misogyny. I did find a spelling error but besides for that the story had a really good flow. Would recommend to any of my paranormal YA friends out there!

A SWING AND A MISS

This was just not a book for me. It wasn't a bad book. Others might really enjoy it. But it was just not my kind of story. The pacing was too slow. Edie was - in my opinion - a selfish and unlikable character, who disguised her selfishness as concern for the wellbeing of others, when in actuality she only protected herself. What's worse, she never even owned up to it, showing no growth over the course of the story. And the 'romance' with Laws was just completely out of the blue and unnecessary. They only had one romantic scene together for crying out loud. So yeah, just not my kind of book..

3,5/5✨️

idealna na jesień. wciągająca, miejscami przerażająca i iście klimatyczna. 🔮

__________________pełna recenzja:

W sumie to jedna z nich...

According to the other reviews, I guess I’m the odd one out because I went into this book with high expectations (I mean, just look at that cover!) and left bored out of my mind. I don’t know what it is, but this book just isn’t very engaging. I went in motivated and with high hopes but realized quickly how bored I was.

It’s a shame I couldn’t get into this one because the premise is great. Two twin mediums traveling with a spiritualist show and battling a mysterious shadow that was also behind their mother’s death. The concept of the veil was interesting and the other members of the show also have abilities beyond the veil. Interesting premise and great characters. This should’ve worked. For some reason it just didn’t.

The writing just didn’t grab me or suck me in like I thought it would. I ended up getting super bored around 20% in and just wanted it to be over. I don’t know if it’s because it wasn’t written with enough urgency or what, but I was never spooked or super invested. To be honest I just kind of wanted to get it over with. If this weren’t an arc it would’ve been a dnf most likely. Honestly, I was just kind of bored the whole time. This wasn’t for me but I tried!

3 stars, because while I didn’t exactly enjoy this read, giving it a 2 star review just didn’t feel right. After all, it wasn’t badly written, just boring.

Thank you to Netgalley and Sterling for sending me an advanced copy in return for my honest review.

Thank you NetGalley. I needed this book.
I was having a really stressful week and Edie and Violet really took me to the other side to breath
The book follows the twins as they struggle to live in a society made for men. After running for an unfair fate they use their h abilities to act as mediums, wishing for freedom and stability. Each of the sisters holds a strong sense of identity, making them incredible characters. The book keeps you at the edge of your seat from the very begging. A great mixture of spiritualism, knowledge, woman’s rights and justice for the ones wrongly taken into asylums. Nothing like a great story ton have. A great day/week. A book with an historical setting, strong characters and hints to the beyond.

Porządnie napisana młodzieżówka z intrygującym zarysem fabularnym: dziewczyny udające medium, oszukujące ludzi, a jednocześnie... naprawdę potrafiące wejrzeć za zasłonę świata nieumarłych? Kupuję to.

“The Second Death of Edie and Violet Bond” follows the story of seventeen-year-old twins who, just like their belated mother, are powerful mediums. The gifts that have been passed down from their mother, split into two—Violet can open the veil between life and death, and Edie can cross into the spirit world—unfortunately couldn’t save them when their mother died in the veil and their father threatened to commit them to a notorious asylum one year prior.

The night of their mother’s passing, the twins became runaways and now are part of a traveling Spiritualist show, a tight-knit group of young women who demonstrate their real talents under the guise of communing with spirits. Each night, actresses, poets, musicians, and orators all make contact with spirits who happen to have something to say. But when Violet’s act goes terribly wrong one night, Edie learns that the dark spirit (what I would deem as the “Shadow Man”) responsible for their mother’s death has crossed into the land of the living. As Edie investigates the identity of her mysterious final client, N.D, she quickly realizes that someone… or something is hunting mediums and they may be next. Not wanting to cause Violet fear, Edie keeps the secrets of not only the dark presence that has surface but the reason cause of death of their love one is causing a wavering bond among the twins—Edie soon realizes she can’t only trust herself to uncover a killer who will stop at nothing to cheat death.

If that synopsis doesn’t push you to pick this book up this holiday season, I don’t know what would. I can’t begin to describe how much I thoroughly enjoyed this YA paranormal murder mystery book. I came in with low, low expectations and was blown away by the author's research (asylums, women’s rights during the era, society in the late 1800s, spirituality, etc.), writing style, great assemblage of characters (Laws has my heart!), themes, perfect mix of genres that I am living for, pacing, storyline and surprisingly enough, the mild romance that typically tends to fail time and time again in other YA paranormal books. Another thing I was highly impressed by was the fact that each of the sisters had their own identity. They had their unique personalities, quirks, abilities, strengths, and opinions—despite that, there was a strong sense of understanding between them.

Despite the raving review, I do want to point out the one thing that I highly dislike was the lack of Violet. Her skills and gifts were only showcased during the later book of the novel but all throughout, the story primarily focused on Edie. Maybe it’s just me but I really wanted Violet to more heavily involved in the murder mystery investigation.

Altogether, “The Second Death of Edie and Violet Bond '' downright unputdownable and has become the first YA I have come across in a long time that lives up to the hype. Across the board—a phenomenal read I know I will pick up time and time again this spooky season.

Rep: sapphic characters

CWs: institutionalisation

Galley provided by publisher

The Second Death of Edie and Violet Bond is a fast paced paranormal thriller. Having run away from home, Edie and Violet make their living performing as spiritualists in a travelling show. Here, they hide their true talents under the pretence of communing with spirits. But not all is right—girls are disappearing and, when one of their shows goes horribly wrong, they realise there’s something more sinister going on.

As I said at the start, this is a fast paced book. There’s a little build up to everything but then you get thrown straight in. It’s also a book where you can feel the tension in it, the creepiness of the spirits that are haunting them, the questions surrounding their mother’s death and the disappearances of the girls. You’re sucked into it, so much so that you have to keep turning the pages just to find out what’s going on.

It helps enormously that all of the characters are likeable and sympathetic. You can’t help but root for Edie and Violet and the people they meet. Their relationships too are very compelling, with the potential for some very sweet romances (although those were mostly only hinted at in this—if you’re looking for a book with minimal romance then this might be for you!).

And, honestly, this one had a twist that I genuinely didn’t see coming (and not in the way where it’s not telegraphed at all). When you find out who’s behind it all and what they’re doing—well, in an effort to be as non-spoilery as possible, let me just say you’ll probably have to put the book down just to let yourself think about it a while.

Thank you NetGalley and Union Square & Co for providing me with a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All the views and opinions in this review are purely my own and not affiliated with any brand.

This book had me hooked from the very beginning! Amanda Glaze tells such a great story. Her writing is easy to follow and the story flows flawlessly! Edie and Violet are such compelling characters and I wanted to hear their story. I wanted to help try and solve the mystery. Most mystery type books leave me wanting more in the end, but this book was excellent! I would recommend this book to a friend or anyone looking for a good read.

Huge thanks to Netgalley and Union Square & Co for this amazing ARC!

The Second Death of Edie and Violet Bond takes place between twin sisters with a gift that allow them to open the Veil between life and death, with one of them is able to travel to the spirit world. Due to the death of their mother and a choice their father supposed to take on them, both Edie and Violet escaped home and now they were a part of the Spiritualist show where women used their skills of pretense as mediums; people who can assess the spirits of dead people. Nightmares begun when mediums were taken by unknown entity and this sparked concerns for Edie. With her terrible secrets, her wavering bond with Violet, and the encounter with a skeptic guy who doesn't believe in spirit world, Edie must find a way to figure out what was happening while trying to keep Violet in the dark. While solving this puzzle of mysterious disappearance, Edie must fought to make the right choices even if her heart aches against it. But she might soon discover that solving the mystery around her is not a one person job. After all, two works better than one.

I cannot describe how I totally enjoyed the whole thing. It was astounding, thrilling, but horrifyingly mysterious! The fact that the author wrote the characters and based it on real individuals made the stort more thrilling to read. The plot flows neatly while not being an info-dump, pieces of necessary clues are given in consequential that keeps me on the edge. No matter how hard things are, Edie and Violet will always make it through. Yes, they fought a lot, they clashed each other frequently, but the bond between soul sisters is tough to crack. I love how their relationship was written in this book, how both of them want the best for each other but too afraid to tell the truth. Despite their arguments, I am satisfied with how they reconciled.

I should also mentioned about the romance which somehow does not disappoint me. Usually, romantic notion in paranormal books doesnt work in my view, but the author of this book clearly knew how to build up the chemistrt between the love interest and one of the twin. I personally love the small part of love story. It brightens the plot and necessary to the character development and growth. Next, this book also potrayed the treatments of society towards women in the 1800s, and how it was described gave me a brief snippets on how women were always treated as below men even though women work hard but never got the earnings they deserve. Instead, they were always assumed the worst and when they showed resistance or some sort of rebellion, they would be thrown into an asylum by men. Reading those scenes made me so damn angry.

Overall, this book has it all; the tense, the mysterious puzzle, the tension between Edie and Laws, it all fits into this book and it would be a disgrace to give this book lower than 5 stars.

My advice, you NEED this book. Just get it.

Swoją tematyką przypominała mi trochę moją ukochaną serię „Miasto duchów” od VE Schwab a dodatkowo szeroko poruszała kwestie związane z kobietami w XIX wieku więc dodatkowo coś z niej wyniosłam! Bardzo polecam🫶🏼

This story was very entertaining. The summary sounded like my cup of tea so I was excited to read it. The story is original, and the character development and world building make you feel like you're right there watching the plot unfold.

I would sometimes mix-up the details of the twins, mostly because it felt like the had the same voice. At times the story had some turbulent pacing, bogged down by extra details, but that was its only major flaw.

A solid 4 stars, and I'll be sure to watch out for this author. Thank you to NetGalley for offering this book in theirs catalogue. These opinions are my own.
