Oak Falls had only one veterinary hospital and Dr Kate Turner was the only vet on site. Her days were busy with her assistant and receptionist the only two helping out and with the hours at the surgery, plus house calls, Kate was exhausted by nightfall. Her long distance relationship with Luke was stumbling - Kate knew the dogs at least were loyal. When a young woman was murdered with Kate finding her body, then on New Year's Eve another woman died, the police seemed overwhelmed. Kate was determined to find the answers one way or another. Forming a shaky alliance with Rainbow, a computer whizz, made Kate begin second-guessing herself. Was she doing the right thing? Or should she just leave the sleuthing to the police and concentrate on her vet practice?

Last But Not Leashed is the 2nd in the Dr Kate Vet Mysteries by Eileen Brady, and it was light-hearted and entertaining. Although I haven't read the first in the series, I didn't feel I missed anything, so this would easily be read as a standalone. Dr Kate is a strong character, as is her assistant, Mari - but the best characters are the dogs! And the occasional cat! Recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Kate is a veterinarian in upstate New York. She and her assistant Mari are attending a lecture on organizing at a local venue, but when she eaves she makes a disturbing discovery: someone has been murdered. Was it the woman's obnoxious husband who did it? And what will Kate do about her long distance romance with boyfriend Luke? The author is a practicing vet, and I enjoyed her descriptions of Kate treating various animals, from an abandoned iguana to a snappy chihuahua. Recommended for readers enjoying cozy mysteries with lots of animals. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the ARC.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Veterinarian Kate Turner is still filling in for another vet and has become quite comfortable at the job. She has become friends with Cindy, the office manager, and Mari the vet assistant, so when they invited her along to the community center for an organization seminar she agrees to tag along. But as she is leaving the event she finds the seminar instructor Sookie Overmann dead in the bushes. Then on New Year’s Eve, another person falls to her death at a community party. The death was ruled a suicide but Kate knows the deaths have to be connected. Sookie wasn’t a nice person but who hated her enough to want her dead? Her husband? A client? and how does a Circle K cashier fit into the picture? Kate is determined to find out but her amateur sleuthing puts a target on her back. so much so that she temporarily welcomes one of Mari’s Rottweilers, Desi who had Schutzhund training into her home.

Kate Turner is a great protagonist who had some tragedy in her past. She is getting very comfortable in Oak Falls but trying to keep up a long-term relationship with her boyfriend is tough. I was happy to see that the office relationship between Kate, Mari, and Cindy has evolved into true friendships. It is also good when a friend has an in with the chief of police. Cindy happens to be his sister-in-law and she can get all kinds of information from him when needed. I do wish I would have read the previous series featuring Kate. I do feel I got to know her better with this story but I still want more details.

While all the human characters are well crafted, it is the canine characters that steal the show, Kate rescued Buddy, a King Charles spaniel, he is not much of a watchdog, but he sure sniffed out the injured dog someone left by the dumpster. Mr. Pitt, named by Mari, was badly injured, clearly a victim of a dog fight. It just broke my heart that people could treat an animal so horribly. Little Man, a grumpy usually costumed Chihuahua who ended up staying with Kate while his owner goes on a trip. And then there was Desi, a Rottweiler that belongs to Mari but moved in to protect Kate until the killer is caught. I love the way the author gives them each a unique personality. They also play a key role in the story and that always makes me smile.

The mystery was very well-plotted. Kate’s inquisitive nature has her digging into the crimes. She gets some help from a woman with a unique talent in hopes of moving the investigation ahead. Cindy keeps pushing Kate and does her best to get her info from her brother-in-law. I thought I was on track and hooked my leash to the right suspect but I was only half right. I love the ending, it was exciting and a very satisfying end to this book.

Last but not Leashed is a splendid addition to this series. It is well-written with some nice twists and interesting characters including those of the animal variety. I look forward to the next installment.

I'm not a vet but have friends who work in that field and imagine they'd be happy to vouch for the "life of a vet" scenes depicted. I'm sure they'd just as rather have no experience with murder, however. Dr. Kate is dealing with a lot as the book opens. It's almost New Year's Eve and her long distance boyfriend is feeling just as emotionally distant as he is in reality. Than she finds a body in a parking lot after a presentation by a professional home organizer. To add to the dark clouds seemingly surrounding her, a body falls from the rafters at a New Year's Eve bash. Luke, the boyfriend did make it there for that but, as a former cop, his professional mode kicks in and she rides home with a friend. All is not lost, however, as she met a charmingly handsome man at the bash, Colin. Hmm, new romance?

I found myself liking Kate a great deal. Her friends and co-workers at the vet clinic are fun, smart, and seemingly in touch with all the gossip, good and bad, in the community. They even know how to talk humans down when near passing out, such as the sight of blood leaves one client. Handy skill for a cozy mystery, I'd say. Nor does Kate show the usual tendency of other series mysteries to go looking for trouble. Rather nice to see a smart amateur sleuth who doesn't deliberately or stupidly but themselves in harm's way. It just finds her.

Did I mention the dogs? Kate's King Charles spaniel, Buddy, welcomes not just one but two fellow canines in this installment, the badly injured pit they dub Mr. Pitt, dumped at the clinic, and Desi, the attack trained dog she "borrows", not to mention temporary visitor, cranky, usually nasty to deal with Little Man, a chihuahua described as having the heart of a lion but the body of a mouse. How can you not love them all?

As for the murder, who killed professional organizer Sookie? Her husband sounds like a likely suspect. Seemingly desperate for money, he showed violent tendencies in public. Was unlucky Lucky somehow involved? He did seem to have a way of stumbling into trouble. Where did Posey’s notebook go? What about Rainbow? She gives airheads a bad name but seems intellectually brilliant, at least? Could the dazzling movie star living on the hillside have played a role? Will Kate's love life improve? Will they find Mr. Pitt's humans?

Why....oh, never mind. Enough teasers. Read the book. If you like dogs and interesting mysteries with a multi-layered plot, you'll enjoy this one. Although new to this series, I will definitely be looking for Kate's next adventure.

Thanks #NetGalley and #PoisonedPenPress for introducing me to Dr. Kate, a vet all animal lovers can love. That said, my vet is ex-military and not sure they'd make as good a sleuth as Kate

Veterinarian Kate Turner features in Last But Not Leashed, the second in Eileen Brady's new series. In this tale, Kate has her hands full bandaging dogs' paws, poodle-mixes needing dentistry, looking after animals in snowstorms, and running the Oak Fall Animal Hospital with her employees. Kate's technician is Mari, and Cindy, the receptionist also works at the animal hospital. Kate is currently living in a converted garage and has a massive student loan to pay off. Her beau with whom she has a long-distance relationship, Luke Gianetti is a law student. Kate attends a lecture with Mari later on at the community centre, arranged by Mari's sister-in-law Barbara, who signed up for a number of sessions in home organisation. Sookie Overmann, a Professional Organiser, delivers the lecture and Q and A session but is later found dead by Kate in the car park, surrounded by a pool of red frozen blood, a snow shovel lying close by.

The story is very well-written and twists subplots together with a captivating mystery. The whodunit had me stumped almost to the surprising end. The author has a very comfortable writing style and I love the veterinary theme. Kate Turner also appears in another series by Eileen Brady that precedes the Dr Kate Vet Mysteries, called DVM mysteries. I didn't read the first book in this current series but fully intend to do so.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Poisoned Pen Press via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.

3.5

Have to admit I was a little disappointed with part of this book. I really wasn't expecting one aspect of Kate's personal life to go in the direction it did so I'm miffed. Still love all the vet details and the critter cameos and the mystery is solid. Plus, it's really clever the way Kate's job as a vet provides all kinds of opportunity for sleuthing. And the mystery is solid sooooo....I'll give the third book a chance before I decide whether or not I will continue the series.

Last but Not Leashed
By Eileen Brady

A veterinary cozy mystery you say? Oh it's such a fun fun read I adored. I need to be sure to read the first book as well, though honestly I did not realize that this was book two of a series. So if anyone asks this worked as a wonderful standalone cozy mystery. I loved the character of Dr. Kate Turner, as the only vet in Oak Falls, now stumbling upon a body then another. her sleuthing skills, strong character, and her kind heart really warmed up to me. I love a character in the medical field being a nurse, I really enjoyed that aspect of the read in my characters. Overall, LAT BUT NOT LEASHED is a wonderful cozy mystery with amazing plotting and a great whodunnit that I had a hard time putting my finger on. The read was simply fantastic and enjoyable.

Last But Not Leashed by Eileen Brady is the second book in the Dr. Kate Turner Vet Mysteries. I really liked the first book, Saddled with Murder, but I loved this one! Though it's not necessary to read Saddled with Murder first, I think you should. You get a much deeper insight into the main characters’ personalities in that one though they do shine through Last But Not Leashed too.

I’m sure you’ve probably seen, read, or at least heard about the queen of tidying up, Marie Kondo. In Last But Not Leashed, Sookie Overman is the tidying up queen, though not quite as famous… This professional organizer is in the Hudson Valley teaching a weekly class on organization. Mari, Kate’s vet assistant and Cindy, the office manager, convince her to join them during the 3rd or 4th class. Of course, as luck would have it, after class Kate ends up finding Sookie who is lying dead in the bushes. And, so it begins…

Like Saddled with Murder, Last But Not Leashed takes place during the winter, and I'm hoping this continues through the series. It's almost as if the season is a character itself. Winter in the Hudson Valley really doesn't sound like fun! I'm only a fan of snow when I’m reading about it. However, living in Ohio also means I have to live with it. Our winters are in no way as brutal as the ones Kate deals with. And she makes house calls!

I still adore the main characters in this mystery series. As I’ve said, I did feel like I got a deeper understanding of them in the first book, but you can read this as a stand alone. I love that Kate is a veterinarian because that means there are lots of animals in the books, and they add even more depth to the story especially when Kate finds an abandoned dog… I won’t go into that since it would spoil some of the story for you.

I thought that the mystery was very well-plotted, and it kept me guessing and staying up past bedtime! I’m looking forward to reading more Dr. Kate books and solving more mysteries with her! I definitely recommend this to cozy mystery lovers who enjoy books with animals, snow, well-written characters, and an intriguing mystery.

Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for an ARC of the book.

I love animals and a good cozy, so this book seemed like the perfect fit. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me.

The writing style itself is good, making this an easy read with a conversational feel.

But I was bored. And I skimmed. A lot.

Oddly, I didn’t get any emotional connection with the animals Kate cares for, even when some of the situations should’ve made me angry or given me a chuckle.

I also didn’t feel any emotional connection with the human characters.

As with many cozies, this one makes the small town cops look like idiots unable to solve the simplest case, while Kate, a vet with no investigative training, manages to save the day.

This is the second book in the series, but it works well as a stand-alone.

Readers will fall in love with the Dr. Kate Vet Mystery series by Eileen Brady. Dr. Kate has taken a one year job position at the Oak Falls Animal Hospital while the owner takes a year long traveling vacation. Oak Falls Animal Hospital is in a small town in the Hudson Valley and Dr. Kate is fitting in quite well....except for solving murders.

Last But Not Leashed is the second book in this series and Dr. Kate, her staff and the town are getting ready for the New Year. Dr. Kate is also waiting for her boyfriend Luke to return from college so that they can ring in the New Year together. She is also hoping they can get their relationship back on track thinking the distance has put a strain on things.

Unfortunately when Dr. Kate is invited to an organizing seminar at the community center by her assistant, Mari, the organizing presenter, Sookie Overmann, ends up dead outside after the seminar and Dr. Kate is the one to find her. Lucky for Dr. Kate her receptionist Cindy is the sister-in-law to the Chief of Police and gets insider intel on things and she likes to share the information with others.

Sadly when Dr. Kate and Luke get together to attend a New Year's Eve party things do not go well for them. Luke's focus is with worrying about family members drinking and Dr. Kate meets a handsome artist that whisks her away on the dance floor. Dr. Kate feels conflicted as she wants things to work with Luke but feels the relationship has come to its end and she is very flattered to be receiving attention from Colin the artist. But before she can figure things out and just as they are about to ring in the New Year, a body falls from the catwalk....and its the cashier that Dr. Kate was just recently talking to at the Circle K.

Now with two people dead Dr. Kate is on high alert. When the second body, Posey, is ruled a suicide Dr. Kate doesn't agree. She also feels like the two murders are connected but cannot figure out how. As she talks to people she finds out other things of interest to add to her suspicions but making it all make sense is going to be difficult for her. And when she is getting close to figuring it all out, she is looking down the barrel of a gun and cannot believe who is holding it !!!

There is a lot to love in this series. Readers will love the small town feel and that the people all know each other. You will love the job that Dr. Kate has and that she lives in a small apartment attached to the animal hospital. You will love the animals and their owners and the businesses. You will love the relationships that she has acquired is the short time that she has been working there. I highly recommend getting our copy of Last But Not Leashed and getting lost in this amazing story.....

Veterinarian Kate Turner is filling in for another vet who has decided to take a year off and go on an around the world cruise. Kate befriends Cindy, the office manager, and Mari, the vet assistant. They work well with each other. Things run smoothly each day.

Cindy and Mari have invited Kate to a seminar on organization and she agrees to go along to maybe find out some hints on how she can be more organized herself. She meets up with the girls and thoroughly enjoys the program. After leaving the premises to go home, Kate discovers a body in the bushes. It just so happens to be the woman who conducted the seminar, Sookie Overmann. Who could have done such a horrible thing? An investigation ensues.

Then on New Year's Eve at another event a young lady who happened to work at a convenience store falls to her death. This is ruled a suicide. But is it? Can the two deaths be related somehow?

Kate and her co-workers are determined to find out anything they can that may have contributed to these deaths. For one thing, the young lady who worked at the store had been writing a novel and Kate does retrieve this so-called book to look for clues. Now this may be putting Kate in harm's way too.

All the characters and personalities in this book are great as well as all the canine characters. Loved learning about all these wonderful animals.

This was a well plotted story and kept me wanting more.

I wish to thank Eileen Brady and Escape with Dollycas into a Good Book for giving me the opportunity to read and review. I know you will enjoy also.

Dr. Kate Turner is a short-term veterinarian in the small town of Oak Falls, New York until the regular veterinarian finishes his world cruise. After leaving her job in Long Island, she has made friends here, but she and her man friend, Luke are perhaps at a turning point while he is away at law school. Her vet tech, Mari invites her to come to a lecture at the community center by a home organizer guru, Sookie Overmann whose marriage is reputed to be in a mess. Kate is the last to leave the building and discovers Sookie's dead body. Kate's receptionist, Cindy is the sister-in-law of the chief of police and feeds the other two bits of information as the three become involved when another death occurs. Kate meets a visiting artist and Lukes's cousin and there are other suspicious people that keep the reader guessing. The author creates a New Year's season wintery landscape and there is some humor in the story too. Kate's patients including Sookie's cat, a rescued fighting dog, she names Mr. Pitt, and a brave chihuahua are charming. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Growing up, it was my dream to become a Veterinarian, so any book that prominently features animals being cared for or just their overall cuteness/quirkiness is something I gravitate to.

I did not read Book 1 in this cozy Vet Mystery series but I think Book 2 stands fine by itself.

I loved the moments where Kate was in office and taking care of animals, of course. I also loved the rescue of the pit bull from being a fight dog. Probably my favorite parts of the book.

I didn't really understand when Kate and her friends thought it would be a good idea for her to try and become a forensic computer expert and find the missing/stolen money. She said herself that she doesn't have computer skills and she is a Veterinarian so that seemed like a weirdly large jump. Maybe there was something about this in Book 1 that would explain her becoming the obvious choice to play detective? Other than this being a cozy mystery and her having to play detective? I don't know.

Barring that, the rest of the books was cute and enjoyable. If you enjoy cozy mysteries, this one seems like a good series to spend some time with.

I really enjoy reading this series. Dr. Kate is an interesting person with love for animals. Unfortunately, she found a person dead after she is late coming out of the auditorium where they had just had a meeting. Then another person she had just met comes tumbling down from the rafters at a New Year Eve's party. While she is keeping busy with her practice, her current boyfriend has decided to just be friends and she is taking care of several dogs which turns out for the best when the killer comes after her because he wants the journals she has.

I had a hard time getting into the second book in the Veterinarian Cozy Mystery series. The characters that made up the story left me indifferent. Kate Turner is a vet who owns Oak Falls Animal Hospital in the town of Oak Falls, New York. Her office consists of her vet tech, Mari and her receptionist, Cindy. She has her boyfriend, Luke Gianetti who is studying to be a lawyer. They later breakup over New Years. He has met someone else. Mari asks Kate if she would like to go to a lecture about home organization. with her and her sister-in-law, Barbara. Sookie Overmann is the lecturer who is giving a series of talks. After the lecture Kate goes to the parking lot and finds Sookie murdered. Bobby Garcia chief of police is called.

Kate does house calls along with her tech, Mari. They are seeing a new patient who turns out to be Sookie's husband, Glenn about their cat. They were going to get a divorce but still lived together in their house. No papers had been signed. He inherits everything but when he checks their accounts he finds that she emptied all their accounts except for five dollars. She was planning to disappear. She had a boyfriend Morris who lived in the city. Her assistant, Elaine Armstet was asked to finish the series. She is also attacked in the parking lot,

When Kate takes bags to dumpster she finds a dog wrapped in a blanket who is in bad shape, He is a pit-bull who has been used for fights. She brings him into her clinic and after cleaning him up takes him into her apartment which is attached to her building. She names the dog Mr. P:itt.

When she goes to Judy's 'diner for dinner she runs into an artist who she met at the New Year's party named Colin Riley who she had danced with. They have dinner together. He tells her that he is going to Helsinki for an exhibit of his works. Glenn comes into the diner and puts up a sign saying that he will give an award for his stolen assets portfolio. Judy tells Kate she should look for the portfolio as well as solve Arthur Gambino is new in town and has lost a large amount of bitcoins and is looking into what had happened. When on a house call Kate meets his wife, Chloe Ramboulle, wife of Arthur and actress to see her dog who is limping. They find a stone in his paw pad. She tells them that the bitcoins went missing after Sookie and Posey were at their house. She had also been at the lecture along with her bodyguards. Posey is also dead. She fell at the New Years party. She had been writing a Victorian book. Kate had found her notebooks in the garbage at the Circle K where she worked. Many of the characters in her notebooks are really people in town,,

The reader is taken on an adventure to find out who killed Sookie and Posey as well as where the money went and what happened to the Bitcoins. I will leave it to the reader to read as there is so much happening to describe to the climax of who did it. . There is a happy ending with the owners of Mr. Pitt come to claim him.

Last but Not Leashed by Eileen Brady is the second novel in A Dr. Kate Vet Mysteries. It can be read as a standalone for those who have not read Saddled with Murder. Eileen Brady has a conversational writing style. It makes her stories easy to read. I found the pacing to be on the leisurely side as we follow Dr. Kate about her day-to-day life. I enjoyed the scenes where Dr. Kate is treating her patients. Mr. Pitt’s condition will upset animal lovers (I know it is fiction, but what this dog endured happens in real life). I like the secondary characters especially Kate’s office staff, but I feel they need to be fleshed out (a little flat). I did not find the scenes regarding Kate’s relationship with Luke to be enjoyable. They were uncomfortable and they added nothing to the book (in my opinion). The mystery had some interesting parts. Sookie Overman, a professional organizer, is murdered outside the community center after giving a lecture (and being rude to some of the attendees). Kate finds herself curious about the crime. When the victim’s husband, Glenn offers a reward for certain information, Kate teams up with Rainbow (an unusual woman who is good at mathematics and coding). The reward money would help Kate with her student loans. Kate hopes she can trust Rainbow whose moral compass is skewed. Kate gathers information with help from her friends while Rainbow dives into the dark web. The mystery moves along at a relaxed pace. There are a couple of suspects and a red herring. I thought the clues were pointed. I found that the mystery could be solved long before the reveal. While I knew the who, I was not sure of the why (had an inkling, but I needed more data). I followed Kate as she sought information on the case. Kate, the veterinarian, manages to outwit the police and solve the case. The book does contain mild foul language (I especially detested the use of the word that rhymes with witch). My favorite scene was Dr. Kate treating a chihuahua called Little Man. My family had a chihuahua for almost twenty years, and he behaved similarly to the one in the book (lots of growling with teeth bared). My mother treated him like a baby similarly to Little Man’s owner. I enjoyed Kate’s conversations with Gramps. They are sweet. The author captured winter with the snow, ice, the bitterly cold temperatures, and travel troubles because you are snowed in. Last but Not Leashed is a cute creature cozy with a slain professional organizer, a curious cashier, a wounded bowwow, a party surprise, romantic woes, a generous reward, and an inquisitive veterinarian.

Dr. Kate is the only vet in a small town, filling in for a year while the original town vet is travelling. The practice is thriving, and Dr. Kate along with her tech Mari juggle hospital patients as well as patient house calls. As one could imagine, the stories around the patients would be enough to make for a good read! However, Dr. Kate manages to find herself in the midst of a murder, having attended an organizational seminar where the guest speaker, Sookie Overmann, is found murdered outside the community center where the seminar is being held. While at the town New Year's party another body is discovered and Kate begins to question if there is a connection, which of course prompts Kate to begin to ask some questions.

Last But Not Leashed is the second book in the series, however it very much stands on its own. The book is fast-paced and one easily becomes wrapped up in the daily life of a very busy vet as she cares for an abandoned bait dog, treats a very spoiled chihuahua and deals with the whims of a lonely actress-housewife who's dog also needs Dr. Kate's care. The stories surrounding these animals and their owners, as well as others, add to the engrossing nature of the book, as you not only get wrapped up in the two murders and how they are connected, but you become curious about the resolution of the stories surrounding the animals.

The characters are very unique! Dr. Kate is a wonderful protagonist - a vet with a mound of student loans to pay off, she relies on others for support, she's not so curious that she appears to be sticking her nose in where it doesn't belong, she also doesn't come across as knowing everything, she wants to help others, and she wants to do the right thing. You root for Kate to be successful because she is just so likeable! Dr. Kate, tech Mari and Office Manager Cindy make a great team and clearly have a wonderful working relationship.

The mystery is complex - it's difficult to see the connection between the two murders, the theft of bitcoins, and the book being written by the second victim, but all is revealed leading the reader to a very surprise ending - totally did not see that coming! Well done!

I would recommend this book and look forward to finding out what Dr. Kate, Mari and Cindy get themselves into next!

Dr. Kate has taken on the practice at Oak Falls Animal Hospital while the owner is on a year long vacation. She lives in a small, connected garage apartment which is very convenient in snowy weather. Dr. Kate has been well accepted and supported by the locals including Mari, her veterinary assistant, and Cindy, her office manager. Even her next door neighbor, Pinky, makes sure she is safe since she lives alone, and he keeps the snow plowed regularly in gratitude for her life saving veterinary services to his dog.

So many threads in this book! The plot involves rescue services for a sweet pit bull used as a “bait dog” but abandoned outside the hospital. Mari convinces Dr. Kate to attend organizing workshops with her where events turn deadly. Dr. Kate and Mari take their veterinary skills to customers who are unable or unwilling to bring their animals to the hospital including one wealthy film star tucked away in a a gorgeous but almost unreachable setting on a mountaintop. Why would she need two bodyguards inside her remote, gated compound? Even Bitcoins come into play in Last But Not Leashed.

The reader meets Oak Hills locals, and there are lots of interesting characters. Romantic standouts are Luke who is Kate’s boyfriend across the miles where he attends law school and Colin, an artist with enough charms to attract all the ladies of Oak Hills. Kate relies on her Gramps by phone for support and advice. Judy owns the town’s only café which makes it a favorite hang out and a good place to gather information. Posey, a night clerk at a convenience store, is writing a “kind of Edwardian, sci-fi vampire novel,” but could it hold clues to the crazy, real life murder plots?

This cozy mystery was a fun read and author Eileen Brady is a good storyteller. As an added benefit, Brady who is a veterinarian herself shares lots of interesting tidbits about various animals, their needs, care, and health issues. These facts are included non-intrusively and never overshadow the plot. Her character Dr. Kate is likable and has a genuine compassion for her patients and their owners. I recommend this mystery for those readers who love cozies, animals, and stories centered around veterinary medicine.

Last But Not Leashed
Dr. Kate Vet Mysteries, Book #2
Eileen Brady
5 Stars

Synopsis:

"A pleasing mélange of mystery and pet lore." — Kirkus Reviews
In the second installment of this animal-themed cozy series, Dr. Kate Turner has one New Year's resolution: Stop finding corpses...
All Dr. Kate Turner wants to do is get her life in order before ringing in the new year, but with bodies turning up left and right, she'll have to trust her own instincts—and those of her beloved animals—to stop a killer in their tracks.
As the only veterinarian at Oak Falls Animal Hospital, Dr. Kate's life is complicated. She's swamped with hospital patients and house calls, a long-distance relationship with law student Luke Gianetti (that is less than perfect), and a handsome, flirtatious artist who sets his sights on her as his new muse.
When the body of Sookie Overmann is found outside the community center after her organization seminar, the entire town is hunting for answers. All of Kates hopes of quietly ringing in the new year are lost and when the body of Sookie's assistant falls with the confetti at midnight, she has no choice but to sniff out the killer. (Amazon)

Review:

The characters are well plotted and well developed. Kate and her friends attend an organization seminar but when it is over the speaker of the seminar is found dead. When another person is murdered Kate and her friends decide to try to figure out who the murderer is. But it will not be easy.

Kate and her coworkers get along really well and I really enjoyed them. I liked that Kate is a veterinarian and all that entails. And the animals were a big plus.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and they kept me engaged throughout the book. The mystery was well plotted and you need to be a good armchair detective to figure it out.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I cannot wait to see what trouble Kate and her coworkers get into next.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Poisoned Pen Press, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

I always love a good cozy mystery where animals play a big part, especially in the showdown! This one was especially epic! Dr. Kate was a great main character but unlike you'd think at a vet office, the receptionist Cindy seemed to be the one in charge which made sense since she'd been there twenty years and the vet who owned the practice had only contracted Dr. Kate for a year. But Kate, Cindy and Mari made for a fun work trio and seemed even to be friends outside of work. They had the advantage that the police chief was her brother-in-law and sometimes she could sneak in tidbits of a case. Cindy was like an older sister who kept them all on track but loved some good gossip!

I loved how Kate's dog Buddy got along with newcomer Mr. Pitt, a poor pit bull that someone rescued from fighting and left at the vet office. Kate suspected the shy teen that was hanging around and knew he or whoever left the dog had saved the dog's life.

Another quirky little stinker of a dog was Little Man, a chihuahua that was being boarded at the vet and Dr. Kate being the softie she is, well I figured she'd give in on some of the stuff his mom told her he liked! Mari insisted that since there was a killer on the loose that Kate keep her other Rottweiler, Desi who had Schutzhund training. I'm pretty sure Kate was super glad she decided to keep Desi for a few extra days! But never underestimate a chihuahua either! When the perp needed taken down, these dogs were perfect for the job! Add to that a vet who'd had enough and a kind but intimidating-looking neighbor, and that perp didn't stand a chance! What an incredibly satisfying showdown/takedown!

Since I have the first book in the series which I never got around to reading before this one came up, I do intend to go back and read it. I'll definitely be reading more in this series as it comes available.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher Poisoned Pen Press, and my opinions are my own.

Last But Not Leashed is a charming read.

I have only recently picked up cozy mysteries and have absolutely loved reading them. The word cozy is just such an apt descriptor and Last But Not Leashed definitely falls in this category.

Dr. Kate is a small town veterinarian and amateur sleuth who finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation after she attends a lecture on organizing at her local community centre and finds the lecturer dead.

Last But Not Leashed had lots of suspense. I tried to amateur sleuth myself but never did figure out who the murderer was until it was revealed.

What I enjoy about cozy mysteries is that while they do have the suspense, they are a break from the violence of a hard core thriller, with the murders typically occurring "behind the scenes". I enjoy the amateur sleuth aspect and I really liked Dr. Kate's character. She was strong and determined. Temporarily taking over a small town veterinarian clinic, having to integrate herself into the town and get to know the townspeople could be challenging but by all accounts she was fitting in quite well.

I liked the setting of this book, the parts of the book where Dr. Kate was practicing her veterinary skills was interesting without being overly detailed. The role Dr. Kate's dogs played in this story was splendid.

Last But Not Leashed is part of a series, but I read this without having read the others first. You can easily pick up as a stand alone. I'll be going back to read the others though.

Overall, if you are looking to curl up with a blanket, hot beverage and a cozy mystery, I'd certainly recommend this one!

I was pleased to have had an opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for my honest review.

I love any book that has a dog as a featured player so I was already a little biased towards a book featuring a veterinarian as the title character. I have not read the first book in the series but I picked up the character storylines easily and was able to enjoy this story. I did pick the killer rather easily but I’m also a cozy mystery professional so I have an advantage there. A very enjoyable story!

Kate Turner is a solo temporary vet in Oak Falls in Upstate New York. She runs the vet practice with a vet tech and a receptionist. That means she is super busy treating all sorts of animals, not just the family dog or cat. (WARNING: I don't want to trigger anybody as is is disturbing but there is an abandoned and injured Pit Bull who does recover and Kate names him Mr. Pitt.)
One night she and her vet tech, Mari, attend a presentation on organizing. As Kate leaves the venue she discovers the dead body of Sookie, the woman who had been the presenter. Sookie and her husband are estranged but not divorced. Following the old stand by - look at the spouse - the police do just that. Kate isn't so sure about that after getting to know him when she treats their cat. When a second woman is killed it gets very interesting. Sookie had cleared out their funds and may have been ready to do a runner. Might that have something to do with the other killing?
As in every cozy the amateur sleuth outwits the local police, this time with the help of a friend who is sharing inside info from the police dept. and Rainbow, a computer whiz. The puzzle kept my interest and the ending was satisfying. If you haven't read the first in the series, Saddled with Murder, this works fine as a stand alone.

I enjoy the author's writing as she knows animals and brings her animal charcters to life with such fun for the readers. This is the second in series of this charming cozy series and I hope the series will continue for a long time. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own.

I love this protagnist as a small town vet temporarily filling in while the usual vet is on vacation. The author has created a pictursque winter time in this small town that is delightful to read . Kate has adorable animals and is a savvy smart protagnist already having solved one murder. In this next in series Dr. Kate and her vet tech, Mari go to a lecture by a home organizer, Kate discovers the women's dead body outside after the event. She, Mari and her friends decide to investigate and find clues abound both about the murder and the victim . Dr. Kate has some life decisions to make about her boyfriend and if she will stay in the town to practice.

I loved the small town feel to this series, the adorable animals and the great charcters. The sleuth was wll crafted and fun to read to conclusion. Well done to the author. I look forward to the next book.

Above average.

An entertaining and delightful cozy mystery that's a step (or two) above the usual cookie-cutter cozy. No snarky, wise-cracking heroine, no quirky, weird best friend, no gun-packing grandma, no inherited store/mansion. Dr. Kate Turner is a veterinarian trying to take really good care of sick animals. When it comes to men, she's made a few wrong turns but when it comes to animals, she never goes wrong. I think that's what I like most about this series. It's written by someone who really knows animals and loves them. That comes through in so much of the dialogue and it's what I find so delightful. There's murder, of course, and Kate has to look into it, along with her best friend, Mari the vet tech and Sally the clinic administrator. What I appreciate most about this series, besides the animals, is the intelligent and above average dialogue. These three characters come across as real people that you'd work with every day. They have their little arguments and grumblings but they like each other a lot. That comes through in the way they speak to each other. They care about each other and the work they do and they all love animals. I think I'm addicted to this series. I'll definitely keep reading.

Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book and give an honest review.
Kate Turner is a vet in upstate New York , filling in for the regular vet who is on a long vacation.
When Kate's co-workers talk her into going to an organizing seminar she agrees. As she's leaving the class she finds a body in the parking lot, the body of the presenter. Soon after she ends up going to a house call to treat he deceased woman's cat. While there she meets the woman's estranged husband. Once she meets him she begins to wonder if he killed his wife. Kate finds that a badly injured dog has been dumped at her clinic, Mr Pitts survives, but Kate is now concerned the people who hurt him will be coming to reclaim him.
.She begins talking to people about the murder. One of the people is Posey a convenience store clerk. When Posey's body drops from the rafters at a New Year's Eve party. Kate begins to think they're connected.
I really enjoyed this book. I like the character development from the first book. Kate and her co-workers are likable, and of course there are animals. Mr Pitts is an adorable addition to this book.

Last But Not Leashed by Eileen Brady has restored my liking the cozy mystery genre. I liked the main character, Kate, and her staff. Kate is talked into going to a community event about organizing. After the presentation, Kate finds the organizer dead, and the story takes off from there.

The mystery was interesting, and I loved the addition of all the pets and the scenes in the vet office and animal hospital. I also liked that the main character didn't know everything and would look things up (i.e., Edwardian era fiction). I like that Kate was shown as a real person and not someone that has all the answers all the time and can sleuth out everything easily as other books do. She also didn't just jump into trying to solve the mystery, but she decided to take on the challenge of the murder victim's husband to try to find his missing money.

I would recommend Last But Not Leashed and give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

I gave Last But Not Leashed by Eileen Brady 5 stars.

This is the second book in the Dr. Kate Vet Mystery-series and I liked it as much as the first one. Something I really like about cozy mysteries is to read about the normal daily life of the sleuth. Since the author is a veterinarian herself, the description of Kate's job felt very real and it was fun to read about all the furry (and not so furry) clients that visited the clinic.

The mystery was intriguing and kept me guessing all the way through to the end. I especially liked the part where Kate had to solve another mystery in some notebooks made by an aspiring author.

This book takes place during New Year's Eve, so it is a perfect read during that time of the year. I am very much looking forward to the third book, so I can meet Kate and her friends again.

Thank you Net Galley and Poisoned Pen Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Who doesn't love a cozy mystery involving dogs!?

The background of this story was probably my favorite part. The Veterinarian setting, the mention of different animals coming in for their appointments. So fun!

I was a little confused at how Dr Kate and her friends thought that she should investigate the missing electronic account money when she stated she has no computer skills and then partnered with a relative of her (boy)friend whom she doesn't know at all. It seemed rather strange. But it's a cozy mystery so I just went with it.

Last but not Leashed takes place over the Winter Holidays so this is a perfect cozy to put on your winter reading list! It publishes in early Sept 2022.

Thank you to #NetGalley and #PoisonedPenPress for this ARC. It was an enjoyable read. All opinions expressed are my own.
