Well, that did not go as I expected.

Kind of a slow volume after the excitement of the last one, but the conversations between Mitsuhide and Kiki were really interesting—and surprising. Mitsuhide's loyalty to Zen is so sweet, but I kind of want to shake him, too...

Um, what?

The whole Kiki and Mitsuhide plot line was fine and I understand each of their sides, but honestly I feel as if this is going to be dragged on far longer than it should be. I get why Mitsuhide said no (I think…???) but also does he really think Zen’s not going to chew him out for this? I don’t really know what to think honestly…

It’s also really nice that Zen, Obi, and Shirayuki can spend some time together.

While I think this series is fine I don’t know if I will keep reading as I tend to like stories with more action and character depth which I feel this series lacks. So, I will decide after reading either Volume 20 or 21 whether I will continue this series or not.

Loved the sweet scenes with Zen and Shirayuki. The Mitsuhide storyline was disappointing.

I LOVE THESE CHARACTERS SO MUCH!!! 😭😭😭

In each volume I feel I get emotional because each one of these characters has become so special to me and admire how all of them have grown and changed for the better. They show that there is something very beautiful in platonic friendship and that there doesn't ALWAYS need to be a romance that blooms and unfolds. (Using caps for my benefit because I loveeeee shipping characters. LOL!)

I think a prime example of seeing that was in this volume with Mitsuhide and Kiki, which was the part I felt the most emotional. LOL! They have such a wonderful friendship and admire Kiki even more because she has no regrets and found another girl boss to absolutely love and admire (even though she's always been super amazing)!

Ah, and Hisame! Who would have guessed that Mitsuhide would tell him that maybe two years from now they could maybe be friends? And for Hisame to open up and genuinely invite him to the festival? Another beautiful and fantastic part of this story that will never get old with seeing new friendships form and friendships deepen.

I have LOVED seeing Zen with Shirayuki and Obi on their way to Lilias and being IN Lilias! It has been absolutely amazing and very much a highlight for me! From Zen seeing Ryu for the first time in so long, to making a snowman together, to Zen and Shirayuki cuddling, it has been so so so very wonderful! I even loved how Zen is seeing Shirayuki in her "element" so to speak as well as meeting other researchers and herbalists she works with. It truly has been my favorite part of this series because lots of food and laughter for everyone! <3

Another VERY excellent volume!

I really liked this book especially since I’m getting back to reading after a busy season! It was like coming back home to see old friends! Although I wasn’t happy with how the romance between Mitsuhide and Kiki was handled, I still enjoyed the story and love how character based these books always are! So wholesome and sweet. Looking forward to reading the next!

When I was done with this book, I was disappointed, because what I thought was going to happen did not happen. It felt like everything was heading in that direction, especially with the teaser in the summary. Then it happen and now my ship is sunk. Due to my disappointment, I gave it two stars, but when I think about what happen there is something admirable and beautiful about what Mitsuhide. What Mitsuhide did makes total sense if viewed from a Catholic background. Mitsuhide's choice would not sound weird to a Catholic, because that is what priests do. Now, if you were talking to an Anglican priest then what Mitsuhide said would probably not make sense, because they may be like "Why can't you have both?"

Even though I am Catholic and I fully believe that priests should sacrifice one choice over the priesthood, Mitsuhide's viewpoint is a bit strange to see in a secular context, because it is not really present. You may have someone not choose the path that Mitsuhide was given, but the reason that would be given might be more selfish, instead of the seemingly altruistic reason that Mitsuhide gave. Mitsuhide's decision also did not sit well with me, because that did not feel like this where everything was heading. In hindsight, it was a red herring.

Based on the wiki, it seems like Kiki made another choice, but I am not so sure how I feel about it. It could be my bias, but so far Kiki and this other characters' interactions seem transactional and cold. There does not seem to be that depth there. It is going to be interesting to see how Zen is going to react to what occurred.

Speaking of Zen, I hope Zen and Shirayuki's ship do not sink! I know there are some Shirayuki and Obi shippers, but I do not want that to happen. I like Zen and Shirayuki together and I want it to stay that way.

Verdict: Everything is still top notch and technically you could say this is a 3, but I am still going to keep the 2-star rating.

Woohoo I didn’t think a volume could bother me like those stupid glowing rock/flowers but this one sure did. There was this massive build up between Kiki and Mitsuhide. Like volumes upon volumes of build up for NOTHING. Kiki admits she loves him and he legit chucks her into the friend zone. His excuse? Well he just loves Zen too much. And he can’t marry before him. And blah blah blah. So Kiki takes this news like a boss. Well then Mitsuhide decides to better explain himself and he comes to, I quote Kiki, “reject me again.” “Yes,” he says. Then comes up with an even more feeble excuse about Zen and not being a family man and never seeing her as a love interest anyway. Here is my beef:

For volumes, the implied relationship was there. Other characters caught on to the romance. The whole Kiki marriage thing was a build up to this moment. If Mitsuhide had said something like “wait for me… wait til Zen marries…” or something that would make sense. Instead we have this painstakingly embarrassing interaction not once but TWICE. Pages upon pages of Mitsuhide doing a poor job to let her down. Do the two HAVE to be together? Not at all. (I’d rather her be with Hisame honestly.) But this was a horrible way of handling it in my opinion. If this is how it was going to go I don’t see why we had constant romantic tension? Also is this a way to imply that he has a crush on Zen? That’s fine too but again, not the way it should be handled. I got second hand embarrassment from this. I get more irritated the more I type this.

Overall it’s not how I wanted it to go but that’s not why I’m giving it 2 stars… I’m giving it 2 stars because the situation was handled poorly and embarrassingly. Sorry not sorry.

I read through this series online a year ago, but now I am reading through it with my physical volumes. When I first read it, I remember being so mad that after 19 volumes, the Kiki-Mitsuhide ship sank. I was not happy that Mitsuhide rejected Kiki and wants to be alone as his only focus is protecting Zen. But, now really reading through this and enjoying the story (as opposed to flying through it haha) I actually don't mind it as much. Granted, I do know the rest of the story thus far and a future ship, but at the same time, it just fits Mitsuhide to want to be Zen's aide and not settle down and marry.

That aside, I loved the Obi, Zen, Shirayuki trio! We like never get that. Those three, let's be honest it's because of Obi, are so funny together. I love how close Zen and Obi are as well. (Like even in past volumes when Obi has stayed with Shirayuki I love that Obi says, "Goodnight, Master" every night like it's so wholesome.) And Zen seeing Ryu after almost 2 years was so sweet! And Kirito!

Also, it's a nice breather with the sabbatical for Kiki, Mitsuhide, and Zen as well after so much craziness in recent arcs.

I absolutely loved this book!!! It was a needed break after an intense action-based story arc, but that's not to say this one was without its emotional intensity!!

This book begins the amazing arc regarding Kiki's big life decisions, and at first I admit I did not like how it was going. Eventually, through a lot of character development, I appreciated and loved how things turned out! I am surprised at myself for that...the author has incredible talent, being able to turn a previous "villain" into a strangely lovable character like that!

This story arc is definitely one of my favorites in the series so far, not only because it is character focused, but because it went a direction I wasn't expecting and I somehow ended up loving it!

I also want to mention that the art just keeps getting better and better, and I especially loved this cover!

5 stars!!!

I have mixed feelings about this volume. But first, doesn’t Kiki look so beautiful on the cover?! Stunning artwork!

Anyway, volume 19 didn’t go as I thought it would. The conversations between Mitsuhide and Kiki... Like other reviewers, I get the reasoning of why Mitsuhide feels the way he does...but I also don’t understand it. I can only guess it maybe has something to do with his past that we haven’t learned about yet??? Because after 18 volumes, this doesn’t make much sense. I need more information.

So this was an okay, laid-back, character-driven, but kind of disappointing volume with some fun moments and character interactions.

With the Bergat incident mostly cleared up, Zen accompanies Shirayuki and Obi back to Lilias.

Meanwhile, Kiki ties up some loose ends, a couple of which involve Mitsuhide... and a kiss...

But then we're back in Lilias and enjoying a small festival and I still want a pair of those earmuffs!!

Well, Mitsuhide was a surprise. It’s moving very slow, and the story moves all over the place.

I really didn’t like the way the story went. Kiki says she loves Mitsuhide and couldn’t imagine asking anyone else to marry her, and he rejects her so easily, yet she takes it without any true surprise. Then he brings the subject up again later in front of her dad and other suitor (?!) because he felt he didn’t explain enough…?? He proceeds to dribble on about how he’s so devoted to Zen that he can’t have a family. And that’s why he needs her by his side. What?

Honestly, I have incredibly mixed feelings about this volume. Part of me (the larger part) was so furious I almost quit the series, because I feel like as a romance-themed series certain things should go one way or another. Part of me thinks it's bold and interesting to go outside certain usual tropes. Incredibly disappointed on a personal level, but can't deny it's a bold choice. As always the art is beautiful at least.

Same review for all volumes:

Watched the anime and knew that the story continued in the manga. It's light fluff. I know that the premise requires Shirayuki and Zen to be together but it would have been more interesting to me if along the way they realized that they are better as supportive friends and she ended up with Obi. Also, she just utters "Zen" way too often.

Another wonderful installment. I loved seeing the trio (Shirayuki, Zen, and Obi) chilling and really hamming it up. And the moments between Kiki and Mitsuhide were just MWAH. This is such a chill, fun series of the joys of experiencing life with other people.

As much as I would have adored having Kiki and mitsuhide get together CAUSE THEYRE IN LOVE AND PERFECT I completely get why mitsuhide rejected her, he knows that he could never give himself fully to her because of his duty to prince zen and doesn't want to hurt her in the end :(

Are you kidding me!? Mitsuhide, you are an absolute fool!!! It makes sense, your reasonings, but I hate you so much for it!!! Aaaaaahhhhh!!!!!!

Also, Shirayuki works in a medical field, so she can see when someone she close with isn’t feeling their best.

Beautiful boards, beautiful clothes. Absurd response from Mitsuhide. Kiki and her father not raising an eyebrow. I understand chivalrous devotion and that it cannot be reconciled with family life. Too much good-naturedness. The three of them, on the other hand, had fun.

Well…. I wasn’t expecting that to be Mitsuhide’s answer to Kiki. What the hell. He’s not meant to be a family man??! So he’s just going to watch Zen marry and have a family and be totally satisfied with that?!?

Alright so.....is Kiki still engaged to Lord Hisame...? Or is she going to wait for Mitsuhide?.....

Zen in Lilias with Obi and Shirayuki! The earmuffs and tent were cute ❤️ Leave it to her to know he was sick as soon as he started feeling bad.
