When Eli Ross left Prince Edward Island to join the NHL, he left a broken family behind. More than a decade later, he's broke and headed home to an uncertain welcome. He wants to make things right with the family he wronged, but his mom's business partner isn't making it easy. To top it off, the coaching job he's accepted turns out to be far more difficult than he anticipated.
For years, Violet Donaghy has put everything she had into making Eli's mom's ceramics shop a success, and she's not eager to forgive the man who hurt the family that's taken her in as one of their own. But when the kiln at the shop starts a fire that nearly destroys the studio, she'll need all the help she can get to save the business and their summer income.
Can these two strong-willed people come together to mend the broken pieces of the Ross family? Or will the ghosts of the past continue to haunt them?
Return to Prince Edward Island for a romantic story of family, forgiveness, and the power of love.
4.5 stars A redemptive story about a former hockey star returning home with his career in shambles and the mafia after him for 50 grand. It explores the meaning of family and the idea of what sorts of things might “qualify” us for getting the privilege of having a good family. I loved the subject of family from both characters’ POVs and how they came to different but complimentary resolutions.
I am loving this series and am not happy about waiting a full year for the next one!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required. This review is based off a final copy I bought.
While Beyond the Tides wasn't my favorite, I rather enjoyed the story of Eli and Violet.
"We both have some shattered edges, but maybe God isn't afraid of our brokenness."
"Maybe God doesn't always fix what's shattered. But he can make something new and beautiful out of what's been broken."
Eli Ross is a perfect example of the prodigal son who has been away from home and his family for the past 11 years. He loses everything from his career in professional Hockey and comes home, ashamed of many mistakes made but hopeful for his family to forgive him. Violet Donaghy - no one truly knows her story or her secrets. Until Eli shows up. The two work together through family drama, helping a local girls hockey team and getting to know each other - revealing all their inner most secrets while falling in love.
Most already know I didn't love Beyond the Tides when I read it, and for the first 50-60% here, it was just average. But the moment all the secrets started to be revealed....I was crying and needing to know how Eli and Violet's story ends. These characters are broken and need each other and God to get through their painful past. I loved the ending itself.
I don't love how the romance in this series is just about their physical attraction for the majority of the story, but once they started getting to know each other, I loved them together.
Overall, enjoyed the story, being back in Prince Edward Island Shores and seeing more of Mama Potts, learning more about these beautiful families, their struggles and how the Lord works. This depicted God's forgiveness, his love, moving past your mistakes with Him right there with you and so much more.
"The truth is that life is hard. But it's easier when you have someone willing to walk through the hard times with you."
"None of us deserve to be forgiven. That's why it's called mercy."
Thank you to NetGalley and Revell for providing an advanced reader copy to honestly read and review.
'She hoped God heard even the desperate cries of those who had almost forgotten how to pray.'
This book moved me so deeply, it's hard to think of anything else for a while. Liz Johnson has written a powerful story here of love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness. When a character grabs me the way these did, I am so incredibly happy to be reading their story.
When Eli felt all hope was lost, God had a plan. He always has a plan. He never wants His children to suffer. Eli never once felt he could have a home again and be happy. But oh, how I loved his story. Same with Violet. She, too, had lost hope. Bound in the chains of desperation, feeling she'd never again experience joy, she found that God had other plans for her as well.
This one is expertly written and will impact your heart in so many ways. I cherished every minute. Well done!
My thanks to Revell Publishing for a copy of this book via the Net Galley platform. The opinion in this review is entirely my own.
The Last Way Home is such a sweet and inspiring romance. This book is about a prodigal son who comes home after being away for eleven years. Eli is broke and ashamed. And the heroine, Violet has her own secrets as well. It was beautiful to see them break down their walls and confide in each other all the while falling in love.
This is a clean read with a few swoon worthy kisses. (Sigh!)
I enjoyed this so much. These people are my friends and I can't wait to read the next installment in the series about brother Levi. *I was given a copy of this book by Revell Publishers and this is my honest opinion.
Wonderful second in the series. Eli and Violet have both been estranged from their families for years. That commonality bonds them quickly. While the past haunts them both, Eli's regrets also come with money owed and a threat to his family. My favorite part of this novel was Eli's new job. Look forward to the next in the series.
This was a beautiful story about forgiveness and reconciliation.
“I think maybe forgiveness isn’t sweet because it’s earned.” His voice rumbled so low that it vibrated in his chest. “Forgiveness is sweet because none of us deserve it.”
Both Eli and Violet had something they ran away from which made them feel they do not deserve forgiveness and the best which is set out for them. Through other people who poured out unconditional love, acceptance, and forgiveness, they were on a journey to self-forgiveness - which is sometimes the hardest of all.
I loved the family and the brothers’ relationship. I would have enjoyed seeing more interaction between the brothers, but what I have seen I adored.
Some favourite characters from the PEI series pops in and plays a short but impactful part in Eli and Violet’s journey.
“Maybe God doesn’t always fix what’s shattered. But he can make something new and beautiful out of what’s been broken.”
I enjoyed this second book in the series and am looking forward to the third book about Levi.
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*
"But it was her eyes that convinced him. He'd have remembered that strange shade of brown -- half intensity, half serenity, nearly amber." (p 11)
and the kind of inspiration that pierces hearts:
"Maybe God doesn't always fix what's shattered. But he can make something new and beautiful out of what's been broken." (p 326)
'The Last way Home' was a captivating, compelling read from start to finish.
So much depth and angst and heart-soaring hope! A prodigal son story with all its rough edges, but smoothed out into sweet perfection by the end. And oh, what a reading journey!!!!
And of course, the Prince Edward Island setting is a major hit with me. Ever since I read 'Anne of Green Gables' as a kid, PEI has been my fictional haven so I'm always thrilled to find a book set there.
This is the second book in Johnson's 'Prince Edward Island Shores' series but can be read as a standalone. If you have read the first book though, you will be thrilled to meet up with the Ross clan again -- especially Oliver and his now fiancee Meg! And, eeeppp, there's even a sneak peek at the next book which features brother Levi. Can't wait for that release!
An emotional redemptive story centered around family, faith and forgiveness.
I listened to the audio version of this story and really enjoyed it. It is the second book in the Prince Edward Island Shores series, however, you can pick it up and read it as a stand alone novel, too. There is even a time in the book when characters from the author's Prince Edward Island Dreams series have page time, so readers who enjoyed those characters will get a sneak peek into their lives again.
This was a great romantic story about two individuals who both carried a boatload of guilt around from things that happened in their pasts. Neither one felt that their offenses would ever be forgivable by their families, even as they hoped within themselves that they could be loved and accepted again. The faith message in this book revolves around the fact that God forgives us even though we don't deserve that.
I loved the way things developed between Violet and Eli. They definitely started off as enemies, especially from Violet's viewpoint. But friendship and romance developed in a really natural way for them.
"Being known was about the small things, small moments. It was seeing the truth before he'd even put a name on it."
I've been so looking forward to Eli's redemption story but I have to say that it did not start out the way I imagined or hoped. I so wanted everyone to embrace this broken, shattered man and help lift him up but he only runs into hostility, anger, and suspicion upon his return to his hometown. Granted, the author brilliantly turns his story around to bring about that forgiveness and redemption but my heart hurt for Eli as he slowly found his footing in the path to grace. Violet is quite the spunky heroine in need of her own dose of forgiveness and grace. Oh, I loved Eli and Violet, with their great dialogue and firecracker-laden interactions. It was also nice to see some of the characters from the Red Door Inn make their cameo appearances in this book.
Now my interest is piqued about Levi, the youngest brother, and his story. I can't wait for the finale to the series.
I received the book from the publisher via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
The Last Way Home is the second book in Liz Johnson's Prince Edward Island Shores series and I absolutely loved it! It was fun how characters from Johnson's other series (Prince Edward Island Dreams) made an appearance in this story...such a delight to get an update on their lives.
Eli and Violet were great main characters. I loved seeing their relationship grow and, while the romance was a little intense at times, I still really liked it. They seemed great for each other and Eli showed a lot of growth in the story.
All in all, The Last Way Home was a fantastic read and I recommend it. Can't wait to read the next book when I can.

The story starts with Eli Ross returning home to Victoria by the Sea on Prince Edward Island, for the first time in ten years, with nothing to call his own except the clothes on his back. He returns with shame, and a secret regret that could hurt everyone he loves. We then meet Violet Donaghy, who has become an adopted member of the Ross family. And we learn that she, too has hidden secrets and shame. Will they both learn the power of sharing their burdens, and trusting God again? I really enjoyed the setting of this book- a small town on the beautiful Prince Edward Island. I loved Violet and Eli; I liked how both of these characters were realistic and relatable. They both had some deep regrets and deep hurts that they had to work through. I felt like Eli’s regrets and struggles, including those with his job and with his family- were also authentic. There are a couple times I just wanted to give him a good shake because of some choices he made once he got home, but some people have to learn things the hard way. His shame and embarrassment led him to those choices, and it gave him that grumpy, brooding hero charm! The amount of time it took for Violet to warm up to him was just right and seemed natural to me. I liked the fact that she had to earn his trust too, and how that happened before the very end of the novel- I like some “slow burn” as they call it, but not if it takes up the entire story. Violet’s past was sad, and hard, I felt her reactions to Eli and the latest developments in her life made sense. I also enjoyed reading about Mama Potts and the other Ross brothers again. I think the author did an excellent job of weaving the romance with the heavy struggles of the characters. The redemption at the end was so sweet for both Violet and Eli. I cried several times while reading this one. This is a book that will stay with me for a while, and I am eagerly awaiting book 3! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my review copy; I was not required to write a positive review; all thoughts are my own.
The Last Way Home is another fantastic, must-read contemporary romance by perennial favorite, Liz Johnson. With a transportive setting (Prince Edward Island!), a prodigal son homecoming, a prickly-at-first-but-totally-compassionate heroine, and strong themes of forgiveness and mercy, The Last Way Home balances lighter moments, a fun bit of hockey, dreams, and the protective force of family.
This story is so much more than the synopsis hints! I am pleased with the direction it goes, and how it draws Eli's brothers (and mom) in to his life again. If you've read book 1, Beyond the Tides, it continues a mending of the brothers' relationships and the thread of mercy began in that story.
The romantic relationship between Eli and Violet begins with a prickly partnership, develops into a sincere friendship, and sparks into the best kind of romance. I love every second of their journey, from their clever banter to their serious, soul-sharing conversations. They are the perfect complement for each other, especially as each of them comes to understand the common brokenness they share and their need for forgiveness and closure life. (And I LOVE how Liz Johnson uses their history to explore different kinds of forgiveness.) Besides their emotional connection, their kisses are pretty heart-stopping, too.
One other thing I want to mention is the bit of an unexpected road trip on which Eli and Violet embark. It provides for some interesting sharing between them because of their proximity, AND it sets up cameos from other by other PEI characters from Johnson's Prince Edward Island Dreams series. I seriously smiled about a few things they get into involving mention of taco meat and Caden's amazing pancakes.
Thank you to Revell Reads for the paperback copy of this novel. I voluntarily purchased an ebook copy. This is my honest review.
What a truly spectacular read! This story tugged at my heart strings in all the best ways. Eli and Violet are fantastic characters and this story definitely did them justice. I had trouble putting this one down because I was so intrigued with their secrets and what they were. Boy did these two have a lot to overcome to find happiness. This was a beautiful story of finding mercy, forgiveness and love. I cannot recommend this story enough!
I received this book from the publisher and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
3.5 stars "You think God is afraid of your past? Let me tell you , he is not afraid of your . . . . jagged . . . edges. . . . . He knows you even better than you know yourself. Jagged edges and all. He knows you, and he loves you anyway".
The thing is . . .Eli is afraid of his past, and those jagged edges are bound to scar the ones that he has always loved(and is growing to love)the most. Can he possibly protect them from himself? Having lost everything, he dared to come back to the one place where he might still belong. Except that, the prickly, bristly potter who has burrowed her way into his family's inner sanctum seems to have made it her personal mission to make sure he remembers why he stayed away for so long in the first place. Oh, he remembers alright.
Eli Ross. Practically a local legend on Prince Edward Island until his alleged fall from grace. Once a household name, famed professional hockey player, raking in plenty of money along with beautiful women on each arm. . . . well, . . .no man should be that handsome . . . not the Violet Donaghy is noticing . . . or anything. But what's the real story? Hopefully his is not as sad as hers, for it seems they both have secrets.
So romantic! So inspiring! Graceful use of pottery metaphors are sprinkled through-out this definitely-not-friends to lovers story. Is there an obvious dose of happily-ever-after going on here? Most certainly Absolutely. Even Jesus, (especially Jesus!) wrote a story about such a homecoming. To know and be known. To confess and be forgiven. To long and belong . . . even if it means taking "the last way home". Enjoy every page!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I also purchased a copy. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.
I think I have a new favorite by Ms Johnson. I fell in love with The Red Door Inn and was so happy to get a snippet of it in The Last Way Home. This is book two in the Prince Edward Island Shores series but I read it as a stand-alone as I somehow missed book one. I’m so glad I did as it was captivating and left me thinking about it for days. Don’t think because a hockey star returns home it will be boring as this is a story that had me sobbing over the love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, second chances, and family ties that is shown. My emotions ran the gamut over the brokenness in Eli and Violet and the road they each traveled to restoration. I loved the characters and the way the words flowed on the page like the gentle waves on the shore. I highly recommend reading ASAP. I won a copy of this book from a newsletter giveaway. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
This was an enjoyable contemporary romance! I’ve been really interested in reading one of Liz Johnson’s books ever since I found out that most of her books are set on Prince Edward Island. I read this one without reading the first one in the series and found that it can be read great as a stand-alone!
I loved the family dynamics in this story! I enjoyed watching Eli come back to his mom and brothers after eleven years, and find his place in their lives again. He definitely was like the prodigal son who ran away, only to return to with nothing but his baggage and past clinging to him. I really enjoy books with this plot line because there’s just something so inspiring about it. I love seeing how God can take the brokenness of someone’s life and make something beautiful out of it. I really loved the themes of forgiveness, grace, and love that this story centered around.
It was fun to watch Eli and Violet go from butting heads to becoming friends to falling in love. Their love story was sweet. I really liked how their past helped them to bond in a way. While sometimes I felt like they focused on their physical attraction a lot, once they moved past that some and got to know each other for who they truly were, I really liked them together.
I loved the setting! The cover really captures the breezy, sunshine-y feel of the town. I love it! I also enjoyed watching Eli coach the hockey team. I don’t know anything about the sport and haven’t read many books about it so it was pretty fun to read about a hockey player!
Content wise, the book was clean. There were quite a few semi-detailed kisses, a little more than I typically like but they can be skimmed. No language.
Overall, I enjoyed this story! I think personal rating would be 3.5 stars. I’m really excited about Levi’s story! He’s the brother I know least about and I can’t wait to get to know him! Based on the ending of this book, I think I’m going to love him! I’d recommend The Last Way Home to anyone who is looking for a sweet contemporary romance that has meaningful story line to read during summer!
*Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for a review! All opinions are my own.
An engaging read with well developed characters, strong themes of family, faith and reconciliation.
Eli Ross returns to PEI the prodigal son, disgraced and his life's dream of the NHL gone. Violet is like family to the Ross family, working alongside Mama Potts to make the ceramics business a success, she doesn't want to befriend the man who hurt her family.
I loved returning to PEI and the Ross family, Mama Potts has always been one of my favorite characters. I loved the relationship building, as well as how the brothers are protective of Violet. It was fun seeing Eli and Violet grudging work together, finding common ground and working through their own individual challenges.
Overall, an engaging read with great emotional depth and character growth throughout. Highly recommend. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Sport, pottery and second chances. Violet found her second chance with the Ross family on Prince Edward Island. Eli Ross left the island after hurting his family and it is only pure desperation that has landed him back home. When Eli arrives on the day a fire destroys the pottery business Violet and Eli’s mother have worked so hard to build, it’s the least Eli can do to help to rebuild it - even if he’s the last person Violet wants around. But the past is about to catch up with Eli and it might put his family and Violet’s safety at risk.
Prodigal son returns, girl with a haunted past finds a safe place and family. The Last Way Home makes the best of these storylines. As soon as the bantam hockey team Eli is asked to coach when he returns to the island is revealed as an all girls team, I was hooked. I love a good sports story and athletes make for excellent main characters. Eli is driven but haunted by his poor choices that ended his career in the NHL. Of course, we later learn there was a lot more to these decisions than the world knows and that only helps to endear Eli to the reader. Violet too is hiding something. But her past is somethings she wants to remain hidden.
Rebuilding the pottery workshop and business is the perfect excuse for Eli and Violet to work together - even if they’d rather not. Violet is determined to keep walls up between her and the man who abandoned his family. But as she gets to know him, she learns there is a lot more to why he left and why he has returned. Eli in turn starts to get behind Violet’s defences.
The Long Way Home has all the cute scenes, character trauma and small-town (or in those case, island) townspeople and heart you could want in a romantic novel.

Title: The Last Way Home (Prince Edward Island Shores #2) Author: Liz Johnson Pages: 352 Year: 2022 Publisher: Revell My rating: 5 out of 5 stars. The Last Way Home tells the story of two individuals whose lives have been shattered by unexpected obstacles. First, we meet Violet Donaghy who comes to Prince Edward Island with a shattered heart. She is taught pottery making by a woman known as Mama Potts. Then there is Eli Ross who left the island to pursue his dream of playing in the NHL and now returns a broken man. The Ross family has endured much heartache mainly from a father who had gambling problems and just disappeared from their lives. Mama Potts along with her other sons Oliver and Levy, have rebuilt their lives and are doing well. Eli comes home not knowing if they will accept him back into the fold or how he will make a living. All Ross knows is that time is not his friend, and he must make a huge amount of money to pay off a gambling debt. Violet’s past is slowly revealed, and it draws readers into the plot. While working with Mama Potts, getting ready for the tourist season, their store has a devastating fire. Violet believes it is her fault and works hard to make things right by trying to get the store cleaned up and reopened. When time isn’t on her side, she realizes she needs a place to sell what she has salvaged and a way to make new pottery. Together Violet and Eli just may find out how God can heal the deepest of heart wounds. The novel is quite good in pulling in the heart of the reader, and the ending is filled with hope. I enjoyed how the author brings in a couple of her other characters from the series she wrote titled, Prince Edward Island Dreams, which are thrilling tales! Liz Johnson does a remarkable job of creating tales with romance, mystery, and family. I look forward to her third book in the series to be released in summer 2023. You can read all her books as they are entertaining, compelling and at times humorous! Note: The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility.
Liz Johnson has managed to weave a few unlikely threads together and produce a spectacular picture for readers. My heart was immediately softened with Elijah Ross’s humility. I wasn’t expecting an NHL hockey player to be so in tune with his feelings and so humble. I loved the faith message and was thankful for the reminder that God sees the finished side of the quilt when we only see the loose threads and jumble of stitched pieces on the underside. I need to remember this when it looks like things are falling apart ~ perhaps they’re falling together!
This exploration of forgiveness, acceptance and new beginnings mixed in with superb character development and a sweet romance was a refreshing read. I loved the title and was thankful that despite the many times I took the last way home, I was still accepted.
Although I hadn’t read book one, I was still able to follow the story and didn't feel that I’d lost too much background information.
I was gifted this advance copy by Lia Johnson, Revell, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Eli Ross left his home on Prince Edward Island and never looked back. He was too busy looking forward to his big dream of being an NHL star to dwell on the hurt he caused his family. Now more than a decade later he finds himself back and not with a penny to his name. He's a disgraced pro-athlete with a massive debt to pay off and no way to do it. Eli finds his family more than happy to have him home, granted they don't know the full story, but they are just happy to have him back in the fold. The only person not overjoyed to see him is Violet. She came to town after Eli left and filled the void that he left. She's like family, but she's not so forgiving. She knows how hard it was on his mom and brothers. Eli and Violet keep finding themselves thrown together and before they know it they start opening up to each other. They are both harboring some big secrets, but if they realize that they can share the burden and ask God for forgiveness they can get the fresh start that they both desperately need. A Christian romance that is sure to delight. While it is the second in a series, it reads like a standalone novel.
I loved this story so much! There's something magical about Prince Edward Island, especially for fans of Anne of Green Gables. This contemporary romance doesn't shy away from the harder things in life, and it makes the redemption story of Eli all the sweeter. Violet also has a tough past that she still hasn't made peace with. They are drawn together through their connection with his family, and they both acknowledge that they have secrets and are curious about each other's. Over time they recognize the good in each other and working together to help Mama Potts gives them a common goal. The author does a wonderful job of connecting with the emotions of the characters and I was glued to the pages as I read the book straight through. Both Eli and Violet develop in their faith and also their sense of belonging as they process their thoughts and feelings with each other and move forward towards a brighter future. It was so fun to have a cameo of the characters from the author's other PEI series when Eli and Violet stumble across the Red Door Inn. Immediately after finishing this book I read the first book in the series, Beyond the Tides, which is also excellent. I can't wait for Levi's story with the next book!

My Thoughts: This is another winner by Liz Johnson! She’s an auto-read for me, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on The Last Way Home. I’m a sucker for a good redemption story and for a former pro-athlete character, and this had both! The hockey influences were strong enough to satisfy the fan in me but not too much to deter anyone who doesn’t care about sports. It was a good balance for a romance novel. But the shiny trophy goes to the beautifully redemptive story. With two characters struggling with their past, Johnson had a lot of room to showcase the mercy and grace of our Lord. And she did it in a natural, not-overly-preachy way. It’s a great example of why Christian Romance is such an important genre.
Rating and Recommendations: I’m giving The Last Way Home 5 stars. I recommend it to those looking for Christian Contemporary Romance or Christian books featuring hockey.
~ I received a copy from Revell. All thoughts are my own. I was not compensated for this review or required to give a favorable one.
A tale of love and forgiveness, The Last Way Home tackles deep topics while still managing to deliver a story infused with light and hope. Liz Johnson paints the island with vivid strokes that leave the reader clamoring for more. Her characters possess a complexity that, by the end, makes them feel more real than fictional.
While book two in the Prince Edward Island Shores series can stand alone, it reunites returning readers not only with characters from book one but also from the Prince Edward Island Dreams series. I really enjoyed a cameo appearance from Taco Bed. I recommend this novel (and both of the above mentioned series) to readers who enjoy unique settings, deep characters, and stories that touch the heart.
Review copy provided by publisher via NetGalley. Thanks!
3.5 stars I enjoyed this one more than the first book in the series. I didn't realize it, but I love stories that have the prodigal son/daughter trope. It just makes my heart happy how God brings families together in faith, love and forgiveness. Definitely check it out if you like contemporary romance settings.
Thanks to netgalley for previous copy to read and honestly review. #netgalley
This romantic story clarifies the cutting frost of a prodigal son’s mystery while warming up feeble hearts. One of my favorite quotes from the book was, “Because not making a decision was still making a decision.”
