They messed with her. But they picked the wrong woman...
Simone used to be the woman that other women would use if they suspected that their partner was cheating. She would investigate, find out the truth, and if the men were guilty, exact revenge. But after things went wrong with one couple, Simone was forced to go into hiding to evade the law.
Having assumed a new identity, Simone is now Mary, a mild-mannered woman who doesn't raise her voice or get angry, meaning nobody would suspect her of being capable of the things she used to do for a living. But when she finds out that her new boyfriend is having an affair, it awakens in her the person she used to be.
That means Simone is back. It also means that her boyfriend and his mistress are in for the shock of their lives...

Like all of hurst’s books, this was absolutely entertaining enough. I am still not sure about the title, a wrong woman? Well, besides that the plot had its positive sides: A woman who works with finding cheating husbands and punishing them? But I had a hard time with believing how the police didn’t find her after the murder, it seemed too easy to escape unnoticed. The suspense increases when the woman starts getting paranoid of somebody being unfaithful, until it cumulates and the twist is revealed. There is where the book didn’t appeal to me anymore, I just didn’t buy it..
I'm teetering between a 3.5/5 and a 4/5 for this one. First off, I just want to emphasize how much I appreciate and thoroughly enjoy Daniel Hurst's writing. Even if I don't love the content, his skills as an author are top notch. Now this was a very different type of thriller. Simone/Mary is an interesting character. But I wanted a lot more on her background, and how she particularly devised this business that she runs. Did she come from an abusive relationship that drove her to this? This would have made sense that she only worked with other women and never seemed to investigate why the infidelities were happening. Not that I'm excusing such things, but if she was so thorough and skilled, wouldn't she have gone to further lengths to figure each situation out? Especially when devising ways to hurt the impacted individuals, in order to do the most damage? Was she just so tired of hearing of all the infidelities over the years that it gave her the idea? Or was she coming from a rough childhood that just made her want to make others feel as badly as she did? I think that with such a great character, I just wanted to know so much more about her life leading up the the previous and subsequent portions of this story. Because when it ended, I still couldn't find myself totally on her side or despising her. And some earlier clarity may have helped me find my footing. I also thought that the lengths that Clarissa went to towards the end were a bit unbelievable and lacked further motive. I'm not sure if the author wanted me as the reader to absorb all of this as Simone/Mary getting her comeuppance from a similar, sinister-minded person. To feel the embarrassment and pain that her prior victims did? The story also jumped back and forth quite a bit, and I felt like the situation with Kieran and Michelle also felt like it lacked some much needed depth, too. But, on the positives, this story is written well, has a great pace, some awesome suspense, and manages its plot and characters fairly well. Unfortunately, even at a 260 page length, it needed a lot more foundation and padding to make everything else flow better.
This is a tough review. I liked the book but not enough for a four rating.
I flew through it. Mary is on the run from the cops. Not a spoiler. We learn that right away.
Her former profession was getting revenge on jilted women whose men cheated. But something went wrong with one of her jobs and a murder occurred.
Now she has rebuilt her life. The zesty, fun, extravagant lady has been replaced by a meek persona, a plain Jane who exists in the backround, sort of floating through life, hoping the cops will not get wise to her new identity.
Till it all goes wrong and the old Mary is unleashed..
The good -- LOVED the plot. Loved the story. Time flew by. I loved the direction this one went in. And it is a relatively quick read.
Now here is where it gets tricky. I like this writer and have read many of his books. Some I have loved, some I did not like, some were in the middle. This was middle ground for me.
We were told so much, not shown. While this is a format many enjoy, I usually do not. I would have liked more dialgue. The story had a flatness to it because we were told so much.
He did this. Mary did this. You know what I mean. I wanted more tension, more drama, more personality in the characters. I wanted words rather than just being told a character did something.
There were some words but there was a great deal of inner dialogue and so much telling. I find I prefer the books from this writer that are more word-driven.
The twist was great because it was not at all what I guessed and I like being surprised. I do like this author so much. I just prefer -- usually -- a different type of format.
The ending actually was pretty damn good! I like books with twists that fit. This one was not to out there and the ending when it came was sort of another twist because I really did not expect it.
I think if one is looking for a quick read, a fun sort of modern-day Noir with a few fun twists they would like this. I am REALLY trying not to give anything away here!
I would give it 3.5 stars. It's a quick and fun read that, while I had some issues with it, ultimately turned out to be interesting and I am glad I read it.
2⭐ Genre ~ psychological fiction Publication date ~ book ~ October 21, 2021, audio ~ May 31, 2022 Est page Count ~ 288 (p+ 40 chapters +e) Audio length ~ 6 hours 5 minutes Narrator ~ Deirdra Whelan POV ~ single 1st, present tense Featuring ~ multiple timelines, cheating, revenge, murder, references to suicide
Simone/Mary Simone has an interesting career, she helps women confirm their significant other is cheating and then helps them seek revenge. Something went wrong 2 years ago and now she goes by Mary.
This was just okay for me. Maybe it was the present tense or the back and forth with the timelines, it's not that I was confused, but I just wasn't liking the way this was set up. It's more of a tell and not a show. I had a feeling how it would all play out and I was mostly correct in my assumption, so that did take a little away from my enjoyment. And eh with the whole set up for Kiernan ~ just because she's wearing 4" stilettos and a short skirt automatically means he's going to notice her in a crowded pub? I guess she thinks quite highly of herself, which really made her unlikable.
I am a Hurst fan, so I'll continue to read what he pumps out, but maybe I am just liking his newer work more.
Narration notes: I thought Deirdra did a great job. No complaints.
I’ve only read a handful of Daniel Hurst books, but in my experience he doesn’t disappoint!
The Wrong Woman is an entertaining, juicy revenge tale - told in past and present chapters - that kept my attention from the first page. Personally, I love a good revenge story - especially when it involves revenge on an unfaithful spouse or boyfriend.
I’d definitely recommend for Hurst fans or anyone who is a fan of this genre!
If you’ve ever been cheated on while in a relationship, this book takes it to a whole new level, just as a guy like Daniel Hurst is great at doing. Holy moly!!! REVENGE takes on a whole new meaning with this book and the jaw dropping twist at the end is the best yet! This got me from me the very first page and I could not stop listening. This is my 15th book by Daniel Hurst.
1 star for the ending. Enjoyed the book, a quick read, and then the ending just seemed rushed and not very well thought out.
I also have a slight issue with the way Hurst writes and have noticed it across a few of his books, very much along the lines of “She said this, which meant that….” or “I did this because I was angry with him for doing xyz ” - yes we know! We are following the plot!!
This could have been a great book. The reasons why it isn't - It's written in the 1st person, and that person is very unlikeable. Mary/Simone doesn't have one redeeming quality that I can see. She also repeats herself every two minutes. Yes, we know you killed someone. Yes we know you were once Simone who was brave and daring and beautiful and are now boring, mild Mary, you told us all that on the last page. And the baking oh that baking, on and on about Kathy's cupcakes, Kathy's brownies, yada yada yada. Simone is a sociopath right? The one client she had who wanted to stay with her husband, she got angry with. How is it her right to be like that? She has no reason to, she should have suggested they go to counselling or something, but instead she's furious that she doesn't get to exact revenge on the woman's husband. This is not normal behaviour. And her reactions are not normal either. They are not proportionate. Her boyfriend cheats on her, so she gets him and the woman he's cheating with, fired. The last bad thing about this book, is the ending. It's ridiculous. Why on earth would Clarissa become a super sleuth because a woman's CV didn't really add up? I can't believe you would suddenly decide that you must catch her out, rather than just not hire her. It's preposterous, the whole story is really. I wouldn't bother if you haven't already.

Oh, where do I even begin with this trainwreck? "The Wrong Woman" is the wrong book if you're looking for a gripping thriller. The plot is as predictable as a Monday morning, and the characters? Don't even get me started. Simone, or should I say Mary, is supposed to be this fierce, revenge-seeking woman, but she comes off more like a soap opera villain with a bad script.
The twists and turns? More like bumps and potholes. I found myself rolling my eyes so much, I thought they'd get stuck. And the ending? Let's just say I've seen more satisfying conclusions in a toddler's bedtime story.
Save your time and money. There are better ways to spend an afternoon than trudging through this mess. Daniel Hurst, you picked the wrong reader!
I wanted to love this book. It had an excellent premise and plot. In the beginning I really liked Simone but things quickly got off track. So much of the story was told in inner monologue and it got repetitive but it also didn't match up with who Simone was. No matter who Mary was trying to be, Simone saw cheaters every day, she investigated them, found them out. So, how is it as Mary she makes every excuse under the sun against it? Simone is so much smarter and cut throat than that and that core part of her would still remain. I also loathed the overuse of because. Because this and because that--i could have thrown the book across the room in some places where it was repeated over and over. This book did have a good twist but it felt like it took forever to get there.
The plot builds so that you expect an interesting conclusion. That much was fun to read. Then twists come that are hard to believe and thus are a letdown.
Looked an interesting read, but I was very disappointed. Badly structured, poor 2 dimensional characters. Incredibly far fetched and only my stubborn streak that means I always have to finish a book, is why I read this to the end.
Tons of plot twist!! The biggest twist at around 85%. 🤯🤯🤯 it's crazy the lengths people will go. Both crazy fmc that are very much unhinged 🤭 quick 4 hour read. Interesting plot!
I finished this book mainly because it bothers me to start one and not finish it through. I found the plot to be far fetched. It wasn’t believable that Simone would go through all that trouble for one unhappy client. Even her line of work isn’t believable for her character because she has this deep seeded need for revenge but it seemingly stems out of no where, there was no big betrayal or broken heart that made her do what she does. The twist, although granted was a true and surprising twist, was only able to achieve surprise because it also is a stretch that doesn’t really fit well with the story.
And here we are again reading Daniel Hurst...cant get enough of him. And now we read about Simone is a revenge seeker. Yes, that is her job. She exposes cheating men, and then gets her revenge on them. But what happens when something goes wrong. Well, we learn quickly that there are ways to get around that. Loved the story - really something different. And it keeps you turning the pages to be what else she gets into. Great read.
The Wrong Woman is an engaging tale of suspense and deception. The main character faces mistaken identity, becoming ensnared in a dangerous web of intrigue. Hurst's narrative skillfully weaves tension and surprises, keeping readers captivated. The characters evolve, enhancing the story's depth and delivering a satisfyingly unpredictable conclusion to this thrilling exploration of mistaken identity.
Simone used to make her living by researching possibly bad people and then exacting revenge if needed. She is great at this job.
She is living with a guy she loves and thinking about a future with him when she learns that her boyfriend has a mistress. She decides to exact some revenge and the story gets moving very quickly. Good enetertainment.
The Wrong Woman is a tantalizing story, full of surprises. Definitely the highlight of my week. Hurst masterfully weaves the threads together in a way I don't see coming, which I love. His ideas are so intriguing. I have flights of fancy thinking about assumed identities and people getting revenge. Hurst takes extraordinary people and makes them look ordinary. But then he shows how they're not ordinary at all. I suspect no one is, really. How delicious! You must read it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is my personal 5 star rating system because I’m too lazy to write a review for every book.
5 stars -> OMFG. I couldn’t stop listening. I was engaged from beginning to end. The story & narrator was amazing. I 100% recommend this book & author. I was able to clearly follow each and every character.
4 stars -> It was pretty good. I would’ve rated 5 stars, But either the ending was lacking, I struggled to keep up with characters, or the story didn’t keep me fully engaged. The narrator was pretty good as well. I’m on the fence about recommending this book, It could go either way.
3 Stars -> It was boring at times & I missed chunks of the story. I most likely struggled to keep up with character developments. The only way I would recommend this book is if it was part of a series. The narrator was most likely average or just couldn’t fix a mediocre book.
2 Stars -> It was pretty horrible. I used it as background noise because I hadn’t had a chance to search for another book. The book either had a bad narrator, The character development was non existent, or the story was hot garbage. I would not recommend this book.
1 Star -> The absolute only reason I listened to this book was because i had no time to search for another one & I needed background noise. It was 1 step up from listening to the radio. I wouldn’t recommend this book to my worst enemy. Everything about this book was terrible. This is only recommended for people on death row and have absolutely nothing else to read.
I loved this domestic thriller so much, I immediately bought a couple more of the author's books before I even finished this one. I love vengeful, psycho women, even though I can't really say Simone was psycho. But man I loved what she did. It really had me til the end, and then I have to say it was a bit far-fetched and I wasn't really crazy about how it ended. Usually I am all about the person doing wrong getting what they deserve, but sometimes, when the person is doing wrong for a good reason, that changes it for me. And Simone/Mary was just trying to get back at cheating spouses. Who hasn't wanted to see their cheating ex get a car full of cockroaches, house full of spiders, or humiliated?
This book had potential but the ending ruined it. The last chapter, why????? It could have been so much better and this would have gotten a much higher rating. I don’t know, I guess I like my thrillers to have more of a slow burn, this definitely did not have that.
The ending was a bit of a surprise but the book is slow. The author repeats themselves constantly like they are telling a story to a child and we can’t follow. It was a free listen on audible. Passed the time.
