THE VEGAN POWERS KILLED ME. ACTUAL TEARS DOWN MY FACE. I also liked how the fight was throughout the book instead of only at the end! Now onto the fourth!

Third Level!

This is the third book (in a series of six) of “Scott Pilgrim” saga.

Creative Team:

Creator, writer and illustrator: Bryan Lee O’Malley

PILGRIM’S PATH INTERMIXES

Look, it’s almost 3:30…

Right. It’s almost 3:30, and we’ve been here for a quarter of this book. Let’s call it a night.

In the second book, you get flashback chapters of Scott’s past life when he was still a teenager, and while you get basically the same here, there is a key difference here. In the second book, the scenes in the past were clearly developed telling a whole chapter once started, but in this third book uses a storytelling technique quite popular nowadays in several TV series, that it’s showing gilmpses of the past of the character (in this case, often Scott’s) but intermixed in the present events, obviously showing the precise past moment to increase the intensity of present situation.

Also, another relevant comment about this third book is that, while in the second book you get “extra scenes” in comparison with the movie (yes, I am aware that these books were before the movie, so it shoud be seen at the contrary, but hey, indulge me and work with me, okay?), however, the story shown in this third volume is totally like an alternate universe version, where several things happened pretty much like in the movie (please, I politely asked you to work with me!) but others are quite different and even you’ll get scenes that you will recognize from what it should until the fourth book, just not with the same characters involved (so, a cool thing is that the fourth book promises to be a “terra incognita” in comparison of what we watched in the movie adaptation).

In the second book, we found out that the infamous Sex Bob-Omb wasn’t the first Scott PIlgrim’s musical band, but in the third book we meet yet another previous Scott’s band! (Of course, I am not spoiling the name of any of those bands!)

Scott does a better gesture to come to a closure of his quite brief relationship with Knives Chau. However, as we all could witness (in the second book), sweet Knives is sweetly bonkers, evolving in the third book in the saga’s true wild card character, where you never can predict what she’ll do next. One thing is clear, Knives loves Scott beyond her own emotional happiness and physical safety…

…the power of the first teenage crush!

Scott’s love life with Ramona Flowers, still is depending of his effectiveness of beating the League of Ex-Boyfriends in an odd world where, you can accept as totally reasonable, cybernetic enhancements, clothing accesories with subspace unlimited storage capabilities, an unsaid rule that any drummer should be a female one, holey moons, save points, extra life items, and of course, the general acceptance that if you’re vegan, you just have psychic powers!

THE LEAGUE: THIRD ROUND

She doesn’t know what gelato is?

Nope.

It has milk, right?

And eggs.

You’re a credit to the vegans, Todd.

Todd Ingram, bass player at “Clash at Demonhead” band (a Canadian band, highly popular at the moment), major jerk and a cheatin’ psychic vegan.

Things are getting more and more complicated in the escalation of the battle against the fearsome League of Ex-Boyfriends. Since in this third book, Scott is facing Todd that besides his psychic powers (that they works like a merging between Dragon Ball Z’s ki field and Star Wars’ Jedi Force), what really got dirty the battlefield is that Todd is (obviously) a Ramona’s ex-boyfriend but also is the current boyfriend of Envy Adams (aka Natalie V. Adams; leader of the Clash at Demonhead’s band) which is a former Scott’s girlfriend. But the dirt in the third battleground doesn’t stop there, oh no, my friends! Since Todd is also currently cheating on Envy with Lynette Guycott (Clash at Demonhead’s drummer).

Oh, boy!...

OH, FRAKKIN’ BOY!!!

Five Character Battle… Activated!

Also, you’ll get a sneak preview cameo of the final boss!

And maybe I am wrong, but since I didn’t cheat checking ahead the fourth book, while reading this third book, I was left with the feeling that certain secondary (almost tertiary) character (introduced in the second book) maybe, just maybe, it’s more than the apparent with potential of becoming THE relevant character in the next volume, mostly due the wearing of certain t-shirt with certain logo, that one knows that in the wacky world of Scott Pilgrim’s saga, the symbols in t-shirts have a hidden significance, so I don’t know, maybe the good ol’ Bryan Lee O’Malley (the author) is messing with my mind. I won’t get into details, since I don’t want to spoil anything, and in any case, it’s just a personal hunch.

Scott and his band Sex Bob-Omb square off against the more successful The Clash at Demonhead fronted by his ex, Envy Adams, and featuring the band's bass player/next Evil Ex-Boyfriend of Ramona’s, Todd. But Todd has powers - vegan powers! - and Scott’s old feels for Envy flare up again.

I didn’t love this third volume as much as the last two though I remember adoring it the first time I read it. Maybe because I remembered this volume more, it didn’t surprise me as much? But I think it was because Envy Adams is a big part of this book and I don’t think she’s that great a character.

She treats everyone very poorly, she’s snooty, arrogant, and wholly unlikeable, in the same way Meryl Streep was in The Devil Wears Prada. It’s a pretty one-dimensional kinda character that isn’t very interesting to read about. She’s bitchy, got it, and? But that’s it.

We get her and Scott’s long drawn out relationship and it’s very blah. She’s dumps Scott, which we already knew, takes the band he started and makes it successful, which we already knew, and it takes him a while to get over her, which we already knew. Feels kinda pointless to me!

Not to say it’s a bad volume either. I liked that for the first time in the series Scott behaves like a normal person as he sees Knives feeling down in the dumps and decides to talk to her and bring her back up. Scott and Todd’s first “fight” in Honest Ed’s is wonderfully bizarre and I like that The Boys and Crash reappear.

Todd’s backstory is bonkers too - that moon thing - underlining the dramatic highs young love can bring out in people, and there are more over-the-top action scenes. The vegan police bit wasn’t as funny the second time around - it’s still a decent bit though.

There’s also a reprint of a Free Comic Book Day issue that has Scott fight several clones of teen girl ninjas on the way to watch a movie. Seeing Wallace get frustrated as Scott dithers over which soft drink to buy was great. And there are some shorts featuring Kim Pine’s woes living with some women she does not care for - if there’s one thing any book needs, it’s more Kim Pine!

At any rate, the good definitely outweighs the bad in Scott Pilgrim & The Infinite Sadness, though I’m glad to see the back of Envy Adams. Onwards to the next Evil Ex-Boyfriend!

So slacker and band member and apparently girl-magnet Scott Pilgrim has to defeat 7 evil ex-boyfriends of Ramona to become her boyfriend. Evil ex No. 3 is dating fellow rock star Envy, who is Scott's 'one that got away'. Scott's sister Stacy and his gay roomie Wallace are big non-fans of Envy; Scott's ex Knives Chau is a bit stalkery... welcome to the world of Scott Pilgrim. Anime-like monochrome art and some funny moments. My fave thing about this book is the over the top out-of context fighting abilities and super powers the young people use in fights. 6.5 out of 12.

I enjoyed this Scott Pilgrim book more than the others. Scott did less cheating and sleeping with under age girls in it which is better. He was less creepy and not so much a jerk. He almost didn’t win the end either.

The villain is Todd, another Bass player in another band. He is a tough villain because he has vegan powers. Okay, I really love that one. Vegan powers, oh and there are also vegan police.

This is so left field and I love a quirky story. I’m going to have to go back and watch the movie again and see how it compares. I think I’m ready to finish this series up. I enjoyed reading it.

My favorite part is when Envy and Ramona realized they were two-timed by Todd and then they were both like, "wait, is that why there are two holes in the moon?"

I wanna smack Envy with a giant hammer.

Todd is gross.

Also Knives needs to get over Scott asap and stop using my precious young Neil.

Wallace, please keep being your iconic self.

Oh, Scott Pilgrim, always stay cool. Oh wait, I already finished all the volumes and... yes, you are always cool.

This volume picked up speed from the normal story because the big reveal about Envy finally arrived. I had been wondering about her since the first volume because all of the times she was kind of mentioned were pointing obviously to her importance.

I really enjoyed the back story in volume 3 and seeing Scott kind of functioning... once. Don't worry, Scott. I sometimes feel like I am you. It's okay, buddy.

Envy was definitely annoying. That much should be clear. But she was by far the most original female character in the series as far as looks go - if you have any doubts, look at all of the others, they all look kind of alike, even though one of them is nerdy, one is uber cool and another one is Asian. I'm talking about the three girls that are always there. Ramona changes her hair color from time to time, sure, but what about the black and white version? I liked Envy's looks, even though they were as painfully and as cringe-worthily as everything else obviously from the 2000s in the series.

I liked the little twist with the two exes to respectively Scott and Ramona, and Todd was probably the most hilarious ex, without trying to be such, of course. The entire idea about his power of veganism was brilliant.

And last, but not least, considering how Ramona was always the pillar of calm and collected behaviour, this was the first volume in which I felt some pity for her, because she is just as messed up as Scott is, but better at hiding it. I liked watching her fight it off with Envy, because that was her first serious sign that she really likes Scott.

edit after re-read: I don't like this part more but I definitively appreciate it more. It adds bit of context to both the movie and animated show /edit.

After first volume I wasn't sure do I like movie or comic better. After volume 2 I was convinced that comic was better. After volume 3 I am back to "not really sure ". Like in all book to movie and comic to movie adaptations stuff had to be cut out and sometimes that isn't a bad thing. In volume 2 I loved stuff that weren't in the movie but in volume 3 I found them a bit boring.Stuff that happen in present where good, filled with same meta humor, but whole story about how Scott and Natalie (Envy) met and dated in collage was mostly uninteresting.

The crazy oddities of juvenile pop-rock-gaming saga of Scott Pilgrim continues! And yes it does deliver. The Pilgrim vs. Todd fight is clearly the crown of this book, though the cleverly written conclusion of the battle is lazily written too. Clever, but lazy.

There are some issues the series (as far as volumes two are three are concerned) have. The book's flashback scenes are inserted here and they're like crazy! Most of the time they are appropriate, but there are times when these flashbacks confused me or killed the intensity of the present scenes. Disjointed panels can also be seen, like there were lapses or panels that have been edited out of the material. Also, I wonder if these one-panel fourth wall breaks will persist through the last three volumes. The fourth wall breaks are not annoying though, just a bit off, even considering the crazy stuff happening there.

Halfway through, and there are still four (or five, maybe three?) evil ex-boyfriends left. Oh yeah Scott Pilgrim, I'm in.

Halfway through the Scott Pilgrim comics, and it's a lot of fun to compare with the movie and even the new Netflix series.

Really enjoyable aesthetic, so 2000s indie, funny and witty and nearly everything you'd like sans a few things that aged badly. And the silly video game-type fantasy stuff couldn't be better.

My main take is that while not as tight a story as the 2010 film, it's interesting to see a more long-term storyline. Like Scott and Ramona date for a while, time passes, and slowly the fights happen over time.

The movie may be somewhat better. Still, these were very much worth reading (and rereading).

Join Scott in his attempt to beat Ramona’s 3rd evil ex-boyfriend Todd. Todd is vegan and being a vegan apparently gives him superpowers!! ( So eat your vegetables kids ) Todd is also a jerk, not because he’s a vegan that comes naturally. Envy is Scott's ex and Ramona is Todd's ex, now Envy is with Todd and Ramona is with Scott...aahhh things are messed up

It's another great volume with humor, romance and action... and Scott finally gets a haircut

My reread of Scott Pilgrim reaches to volume three which is in my opinion a high mark in the series.

Bryan Lee O'Malley flexed a lot of different muscles in creating this volume. It has at least two main arcs but I'm highlighting two: the first one was Scott Pilgrim's current battle with evil ex number three Todd Ingram; and the second story was a series of flashback that shows Scott and Envy Adams' love story and breakup that lead to the eponymous Infinite Sadness. If one would notice, O'Malley made the pages with the flashback black in the gutters to differentiate it from the current story-line. He did at least three art styles here as well.

Scott Pilgrim may be a shallow, immature jerk but the heartbreak he went through here is one anyone could empathize with. O'Malley captures the nut punch of a break up and the awkwardness when someone meets an old flame who haven't had the chance to do some closure. It's an open wound and O'Malley shows us how an evil ex rubs gunpowder on it and lights it up. That and he it wraps with an adventure story as well.

My memory is pretty hazy but I think O'Malley would again approach this high mark of quality again in the series. I think it occurs twice later on.

The title of this volume is apt: it is mainly about Envy, and everything about envy is infinitely sad. She is mean and selfish, but also gullible, makes bad decisions, hates herself, has no empathy, and is in a codeoendent relationship with Todd. Todd has awesome vegan powers, but otherwise he is a collossal jerk. He is also Ramona’s third evil ex. Thus Scott and Todd predictably fight, with the great gags about vegan academy, vegan police, and the best part, de-veganizing ray. Oh, and chicken parmesan isn’t vegan.

We also have a bit of a reversal of roles, as Ramona also ends up fighting Scott’s evil ex, Envy. The fantasy elements are steadily growing, too. The whole comic has the feel of being so real, then we have a savepoint, or an infinite bag, or a bionoc arm show up. And of course, fights where the loser turns into coin.

I still love this series, but I had to deduct a star for too much Envy. She brings the mood down. There is a reason why the movie omitted most of Envy’s story: it is too depressing.

I read this really quickly while trying to decide what to read next. I really liked the story in this one. There were new characters and the backstories were really effortlessly worked into the main story. It all flowed really well. I love the art style, I think Bryan Lee O'Malley is super super clever and I'll read the rest of this series soon :)

I have to admit that I am losing interest in this comic and the situations seem a bit repetitive. Perhaps it is betraying my age or the mores of my generation, but I found myself skimming the text and just enjoying the artwork.

LOLZ!! Ok... checks it!! This isn't written by the author but he has a special sectiop in the back of this issue where his friends contributed scenes... and this REALLY helped me understand Canadians.

Ramona (American) - How come Canada has the queen on its money
Scott (Canadian) - Shh! Do you think it's easy being Britain's plaything?

Ramona: Plaything?

Scott: We do what that old lady wants. She says "jump" and we say "how high" and "should we smile wider?"
Ramona: This is so much crap, Scott

Scott: Remember when Prince Charles married Camilla?
Ramona: Vaguely

Scott: Every person under 18 had to dress as a horse and go on "Parade". All the tv channels broadcast a live feed of the queen, drunk and laughing
Ramona: Was this a dream you had when you were ill?

The End

LOLZ!! see!! Look at all the cool things I'm learning.

Well, my kiddies... Let's get this part over with first-

- A Review from the Mother of a 13 year old Boy -

In Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness we see a couple of racey scenes. - There is a bra being unhooked from the back, so there is bare back showing, You see Scott ontop of Ramona with a blanket over them, Kim and Scott with a blanket over them in a car, Scott and Envy with a blanket over them.... needless to say... my son probably thinks that all people in their 20s do is boink. LOLZ.... I never had that experience but this is fiction ;) Oh yeah, and you get to see Scott's nipples and a close up of the evil ex's zipper (but no crotch bulge)

The language in this one is a bit fouler.
The words:
A**hole
Di*kwad
Douc*ebag
Bi*ch

are present. (I used cryptic stars to cover up letters. I know it might be hard to decode)

That really doesn't bother me at all as long as the kid reading this book is 13 and up. I mean Snikeys! How many times is the F Bomb dropped in Ya, nowadays? And, all those words can be said on Comedy Central... so, still... pretty tame.

- A Review from a person who is anti-thick Glasses -

Have you noticed the new trend in the world? Thich glasses!! Like 1950s Army Thick! Like Henry Rollin in the 90s thick. Why is this the new trend? I'll tell you why! Ok... I'll tell you my theory on why I think it's hip. People who wear these thick glasses... you know... those people back in high school who were like "I can't wear glasses because they'll hide my pretty face" are now rockin these glasses because I think it makes them think that they are smarter than the rest of us... And people are like listenig and hanging on to everything they say because somehow their glasses are hypnotizing these people into believing that the wearer is cool and hip and smart.

Why am I bringing this up?

Because the evil Ex in this story is a VEGAN!! And it appears that the author and I are of the same opinion when it comes to vegans (so that means he probably shares the same belief as me with my anti-thick glasses campaign).

In the book, Todd - the evil ex-boyfriend, thinks that he is better than everyone, has magical powers, has floofy sexy hair, thinks that he is a rock star, and believes he is better than anyone out there because he is a hardcore vegan. That's right (and if you've ever met one.... you know.... I kinda think they think that too lolz) Todd, even went to a special Vegan school where he was trained in the fine arts of vegan magical powers.

What am I getting at? Really nothing... I just thought it was really funny how the author portrayed vegans lolz!!

- A review from a Smashing Pumpkins Fan -

OMG!! So, guess what? I seriously think this author dude is a bit of a fan (mondo fan) of the Smashing Pumpkins.

For one - the books is called "Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness" - now, The Pumpkins have a cd called "Melacholy and the Infinite Sadness" and in the "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" video Billy Corgan introduces the world to his Zero shirt (which I own and also my senior quote was a lyric from that song) and in this book !! -- Scott is WEARING the ZERO shirt!! (it is also in the movie) Therefore... I believe that this book is a tribute to Bily Corgan's bald baby head. Praise Billy!!

- A Review from an original NES owner -

There is a video game theme in these books. Scott defeats the evil boyfriends, picks up coins, earns bonus swag... it's really fun!!

- A review from an American Idiot -

Do Canadians call their bacon Canadian bacon or just bacon? Do they call American bacon - American bacon? Or perhaps "Man! this bacon is way better than ham!"?

What is a chode? Is that a Canadian word? Am I just unhip? :P

All in all.. this book was kinda slow but it made me laugh :) And that thing about vegans and their super-powers is hilarious!! Loves it!

The title to the third volume of Scott Pilgrim's adventures is definitely cribbed from a Smashing Pumpkins album. The name is apt, as it describes a period a period in Scott's life where he lost his greatest love and whose voice is enough to turn him into a quivering incoherent mess.

This volume is about Envy, as much as it is for Scott. The second volume hyped Envy as much as it could, so the author had to deliver on that promise and it did. This series continues to deliver full marks; so from the first volume to this one, that's three straight five stars.

Envy is the main villain, though Ramona's third evil ex, Todd Ingram has super Vegan powers, he has not choice but to stand aside for the real star of this story. This is the third stage of a re-read, so I know she made it to the last volume, but only because her character underwent a change from despised to tragic.

Envy started the volume as the one character universally despised by Scott's friends. Even Ramon grew to hate her after their first meeting. Not even her flashback made her sympathetic, she was once Natalie V. Adams, Scott called her Nat and was relatively nice. Until she slowly took over Scott's band, broke up with, and rechristened her newly minted ambitious self as 'Envy'. There was nary a moment where nice Nat could still exist under the Envy facade. It was only when it was revealed that Todd was cheating on her, that we get a glimmer of the real Nat. The book ended with the hope that Envy would be more Nat in the future.

The first three volumes are my fondly remembered parts of the entire series. I'm not as motivated to finish the re-read with the last half.

Ever feel like a book is a little too specific to your interests? Scott Pilgrim's life is all music and old-school video games. I get the references consistently, and they're references I'm not used to seeing in stories.

O'Malley's storytelling style is perplexing in many regards. About 80% of the time it's a slice-of-life view of a Canadian loser in a band who's barely keeping things together in any aspect of his life.

The weirdness comes with the remaining 20%, where he engages in anime-style paranormal battles, gets Mario Brothers power-ups, and worries if he should use the Final Fantasy save point before confronting his next foe. The overarching story relates to the cabal of evil ex-boyfriends he must defeat to maintain his relationship with the lovely Ramona.

And yes, the tonal shifts really are that jarring. I like both, but damned if I'm having trouble wrapping my head around what he's going for on this. It's entertaining, but it just sits oddly in my brain.

Also, I'll be fascinated to see what happens if they make the movie adaptation with Michael Cera. Scott Pilgrim is a skeezy loser who shares a bed with a gay guy in a one room apartment, treats the girls in his life like crap, and can't hold down a job. It seems like it would take an actor that likable a lot to fill those shoes.

I'll keep buying the books because it's well realized and fun, but I'll also probably keep finding myself asking, "Who writes like this? Seriously!"

Another one bites the dust

You can't date Ramona unless you agree to take on every ex-boyfriend she has ever had. Scott might not be a typical violent guy, but he can hold his own battles. This was a no-brainer for him. But what about Scott exes? Would Ramona fight for him as well?

Although, I don't agree with the whole love fights -- the Scott Pilgrim series is written as a video game. The books are humorous, and filled with music bands subplots, giving them an extra touch of creativity. It was entertaining to see Natalie (a.k.a Envy) appear in this book and try to break Scott's heart all over again. But of course, the introduction of new characters, placed the band in the background. And frankly, the subplots lacked a bit more attention.

I can't help comparing this to the movie version since I saw the movie first. I know that is heresy among readers. However, the thing that I liked about the comic is that Knives is a more sympathetic character than in the movie. The thing that the movie handles better is the battle with psycho-vegan Todd Ingram. What happens in the comic just isn't as exciting as how it happens in the movie. Sorry, readers!

AMAZING!!!. This was such a great graphic novel. I loved it even more then the second volume. The reason why I gave this a 4 star and was close to a 5 star is because it was kind of confusing seeing who dated which and what happened in the past. But overall this was such an AWESOME and KICKASS Graphic novel.

Another fun installment in the Scott Pilgrim universe, but I've gotta be honest, the shtick is wearing thin on this one. I don't remember Scott being so unlikable. He's a free loader who's pretty shitty to the girls he dates. He's likable in that he seems genuinely well-intentioned, but it's a hard mix. He's mostly a "nice guy loser."

But the real issue I'm having with the series comes in the tone and some of the jokes. There's a lot that's funny, but there's also some ickiness. The Asian fetishizing is a bit much. "Nubile Asian teen" should never have been printed, wtf 😬 also, the Knives storyline is a bit hard to read. She's 17 years old, and she's dealing with people in their early-mid twenties. It's weird.

But I know the story doesn't really take itself seriously. That's sort of the point. It's chaotic and random and sort of meta. The rules of storytelling don't necessarily apply. So, I might come back and finish up the series at some point! But I'll stop here for now.

"Wh... What is that?"
"What?"
"That glowy thing by the door."
"What are you talking about?"
"That, uh, thing."
"I think it's a save point."

Lazily picking up where Sex Bob-omb's story left off, Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers and company stand face to to face with Ramona's third evil ex...
And one of Scott's.

Envy Adams, Scott's bandmate and girlfriend from university who broke his heart, has resurfaced, this time in the form of an alt rock band, playing alongside Todd, Ramona's ex with SuperVegan powers.
Provoked by insults against Ramona, Todd stands up for his girl's honor against the SuperVegan.

"That's it! That is IT, you cocky COCK!"

... Do you really need me to tell you that didn't go well?

Besides getting his own ass kicked by Todd, Scott puts Knives, the girl he was dating when he met Ramona, in the crosshairs.

Determined to fight every battle it takes to be together, Scott and Ramona, plus Sex Bob-omb, Knives, and Wallace, because Wallace, band together to take down Envy and her lackies.

"I know what you're trying to do, and it won't work. Nothing will. You're finished, and Todd's going to make sure you stay that way.

The things you can accomplish with friends and music will always triumph over the powers of darkness... And Vegandom.

Frankly, these comics are just stupid fun with deadpan snark, smart parody, reference after reference after reference, and a little bit of morals about standing by your friends and doing the right thing.

Volume 3 was a blast. While reading, any page could be set years in the past, (backstory!) and learning more about at least a few characters was fun.
And as for character development, Knives has really proven she can hold her own in the occasional violent tailspin of hanging out with Sex Bob-omb. And Ramona has also proven that she does truly want to be with Scott, that she's not just having fun with him.
Bryan Lee O'Malley writes really believable, likable characters, even in this weird pseudo-fantasy world of his.
The ending doesn't quite live up to the Big Bad climax of Scott Pilgrim, Volume 1: Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, but it was still hilariously heroic.

This Western take on manga is just cute. What I love about it is every little egg and visual gag on each character.

Overall, I feel like something special could come out of the weird, energetic, nonsensical adventure of these comics.
Almost sad I'm halfway through.

Being the continuing saga of Canadian twenty-something slacker Scott Pilgrim, his friends and band mates, and his new girlfriend Ramona Flowers who has seven evil ex-boyfriends that Scott must fight to win her hand. Or, I dunno. Something like that.

In this volume, Scott encounters his old girlfriend Envy whom he is still obsessing over a year and a half after their epic break-up that may or may not have involved his getting a bad haircut. She's in town with her madly successful-and evil-alt rock band that, in a penultimate stroke of indie cred, has opened for The Pixies ("It's-yeah, it isn't something I can really put into words at this point.") In Envy's band is Todd who is not only annoying and vegan but is also one of Ramona's evil exes. There will be dairy-free blood.

I am on the record as loving this series. I just loved this entry a little less. It still has some great lines and visual jokes (when Kim tells Ramona she spent the evening in her room scrap-booking, "<--Cry for help" appears in text below her.) But the story is kind of hard to follow in places. Most of the problems were in the flashback sequences that start and end abruptly without explanation. Characters and references are introduced and not explained until much later which has always been O'Malley's thing but sometimes it's just confusing. A few jokes fell flat. And, I just don't always get or maybe appreciate the gamer jokes. But then again, I'm old, goddamnit.

Having said all that, this series is funny and endearing and Scott and company really have a way of growing on you. I lament I'm already halfway to the end (although there is still the experience of reading this on the iPad ap, which I've heard is worthy.)

Much better than book 2, IMHO, flowing more smoothly along the story, while still diving into various characters' lives. Really excellent use of the artwork to convey intensity and emotion. Certain scenes take on a gravity of their own, simply by using a variety of contrasts; things I didn't realize you could do with black and white in a comic. While I got completely lost about who had dated whom by the end, the very last page of the book is a relational diagram of the characters. Very awesome, though it should be on the first page, not the last.

This one jumps right back into what I loved about Scott Pilgrim in the first place, with a heavy dose of my favorite character so far: Envy Adams. Envy is Scott's ex-girlfriend, the lead singer for The Clash at Demonhead.... and a totally hot, egomaniacal bitch. From the last page of book 2, to the end of this book, I was in love with Envy. You want to hate her so much, but just like many of the characters, she's an antagonist, not necessarily a villain. Plus, Todd (who is not only Ramona's ex, but Envy's as well) is fucking awesome--except/because he's vegan. As I'm trying to court an almost-vegan right now, I'm scared shitless.
