3.5 rounded up. This further solidifies my theory that pre-Odasaku Dazai and post-Odasaku Dazai are almost two completely separate characters - the impact that Oda had on him is probably the most significant piece of character development in the series as a whole.

I'm also consistently impressed by the world-building that goes into this series.

poorly-drawn crying emoji throwing its hands up to the sky in anguish

I can't believe Bones cut so many of these scenes out of the anime. It's truly tragic.

Overall, this was definitely one of the novels I've ever read. I feel like this explained Chuuya's ability a lot better than the anime adaptation, though I'll have to wait until Storm Bringer to really figure out what the whole deal with Arahabaki is. Dazai and Chuuya's banter was very enjoyable to read, because of course it is. I also feel like the characterization of Rimbaud/"Randou" was also a lot better here than in the show. But, then again, it has been over a year since I've watched it, so I don't know.

Like with all of the other volumes, I won't be giving this a rating because I don't think I can give an accurate one, but just know that this has a special place somewhere in my heart. I'm actually not sure how it even managed to fit in my heart considering hearts are several inches shorter than the size of a book, but whatever I guess.

7/10 which is extremely biased since i've loved bsd and these characters for so long.
*long rant ahead; really went off on the entire series*
since i couldn't log this on myanimelist properly, i have to do it here and in the process i'm about to give my two cents. having recently read the four years worth of manga i have to conclude that kafka asagiri is not a good storyteller.
let me explain.
kafka relies a lot on literature which is not a bad thing per se but recently his work consists of constant references in the form of new characters and abilities, while overlooking his already existing characters and plots. the more you think about the plot and try to reason how stuff works, you'll find yourself incredibly frustrated because - it just doesn't.
kafka blinds you with epic plot twists and
allusions to some of the world's best literature works, but when that's all said and done there is barely any flesh left in the story.
that being said, this novel is one of bungo stray dogs best moments.
in comparison to the anime adaptation, the novel works so much better because we're given more insight on character's thoughts and consequences of their actions are much more clear; while in anime, some of these things may seem sudden.
“Well, there you have it, Dazai,” Mori said, smirking. “Chuuya is the most violently powerful person in this room. But in the Mafia, violence and brute force are merely a couple of tools at our disposal. Our true strength lies in controlling rational action by any means necessary. In this case, the disadvantage of opposing me outweighs the advantage. Just some food for thought.”
“I guess I see what you mean, but what are you lecturing me for?”
“Good question.”

nakahara chuuya is undoubtedly the one of kafka's best characters: he is likeable, has powerful and logical ability and overall is full of potential. but i think the thing i love about chuuya the most is that despite all this - he's vulnerable. he's incredibly loyal and sincere, doing what has to be done in order to protect what he stands for. yet still, in the main story he barely appears (15/100 chapters to be precise). this story explains chuuya's ability well, including the sole existence of corruption, and i think that chuuya's backstory with the sheep is an example of allusion to the original poem done well.
Dazai showed flashes of brilliance one moment, but the next moment, they were gone. As soon as he seemed to have it all figured out, he’d confuse everyone by talking about his bizarre, meaningless fascination with suicide.

dazai, while in the port mafia, is a much better fleshed out character than what he becomes later in the series. he's only fifteen years old, but at the same time he is very cautious of his surroundings, especially after being a witness to the previous boss' death. this foreshadows a lot of events that will take place after, as well as how it will impact other characters and their choices. some of his behavior can be attributed to trauma he experienced and some to his age (while later in the series it becomes quite unclear).
“The mission isn’t over yet,” Dazai suggested with a cold gaze. “It only ends when everyone involved in the assassination and fabrication of the boss’s final testament has been silenced…permanently. Right?”

this is ultimately what brings mori to think that dazai will once kill him for the boss position in the mafia and therefore drives him to, in a way, arrange the death of dazai's only true friend.
pre-odasaku's death, dazai was a completely different person from ADA dazai. if you squint, in the manga you can see glimpses of his "true" self still.
Miscalculation.
You misjudged the situation, he told himself. You failed to pick the optimal solution. You shouldn’t have chosen this child to help you. Dazai is unpredictable. He can be sharp but in a dark, twisted way. He’s observant. He’s cold and calculating with no equivalent even in the Mafia, where the most evil reside.

as the time passed, kafka unfortunately started obviously favoring dazai in the series and our main, true, protagonist nakajima atsushi has become severely overlooked. it became reduced to this: atsushi being meek and still losing fights and dazai being all powerful and wise mentor who never once made a mistake. because of that, you never know what is going on inside his head and that makes him extremely unpredictable, therefore detached from other characters and by extension, readers. other characters that do this are dostoevsky and gogol (but he's utterly insane, so i'll let it slide). this allows kafka to have as many asspulls as plot devices as he'd like, and to attribute it to dazai's (and dostoevsky's) unlimited knowledge and wit. even chuuya addresses this in the novel (lmao)
“You have no idea how irritatin’ this is, you crafty son of a bitch,” Chuuya grumbled while still midair. “I can’t believe your prediction was right again!”
{...} “I’m pissed, too.” Chuuya’s scowling face was bruised and cut up. “Every last detail went just as that sly bastard said it would, even the ending.”
as well as completely absurd skills
“You’ve gotta be kidding me,” Chuuya spat. “The hell can’t his skill do…?”

one of the few examples where dazai was truly useful as a mentor (not just this epitome of knowledge and power) to atsushi are the conversations with atsushi after he encounters q and after the orphanage director dies. this i would say is the only "mistake" dazai ever made, he slipped into his "true", cruel persona and treated atsushi the way he treated akutagawa throughout his entire mentorship. the main difference is that he did it to hurt akutagawa, but to help atsushi (can be debatable, but that's how i interpret it).
as far as his ability goes, he does have a pretty logical one as well as good allusions to no longer human, and the real dazai's life heavily reflects on fictional dazai so i feel like that is the aspect of his character i have no real critique of. his friendship with oda and ango was also a nice touch.
“…Hey,” Chuuya muttered softly.
Dazai didn’t reply. He didn’t even turn around.
“…Hey, I’m talkin’ to you,” Chuuya repeated. “Tell me where we’re going.”
“Gosh, the weather is really nice today. In fact, it’s so nice, I think I can hear a little fairy talking to me.”
“Aw, piss off. You know it’s me.”

considering soukoku, dazai and chuuya have one of the best dynamics in the series, and this is kind of recreated in akutagawa and atsushi later on, but not as well. simply because they are not as strong characters as dazai and chuuya are. there is a given parallel that mori and fukuzawa used to be just like that, but i would like to limit Only a diamond can polish a diamond. statement to their abilities. kouyou was chuuya's mentor, while dazai stayed under mori who saw his younger self in dazai and i think there is a lot of symbolism in that, which i like. kafka could have utilized soukoku's powers more, with emphasis that they complement each other; we see some shortcomings of dazai's ability but it's just a glimpse.
“I see… So it’s all for your partner,” Dazai said listlessly. “Betraying the Mafia, spreading rumors about the old boss’s resurrection, this fight we’re in now… It’s kind of hard to believe, to be honest.”
“Maybe for a slimeball like you it is,” Chuuya scoffed. He looked up at Randou. “Throwing everything away for your friends is a perfectly respectable reason to risk your life if you ask me… What more could you ask for in an opponent?”

i wish this novel focused more on soukoku dynamics and how opposite to each other they truly are, rather than half of it being a teaser for stormbringer introducing transcendents. although i can understand why is it important since real-life chuuya was influenced mostly by french poets in his work, and i liked how verlaine's betrayal of rimbaud in the novel corresponds to the real life events.
the thing that stood out the most as bad for me in this novel were some plans and some abilities, that are a perfect example of asspull i mentioned earlier.
i'm still excited for stormbringer this year and i am highly hoping that it would be the best installment in the series so far.

I'll never rate it below 5 ever, Kafka is clearly best at novels.
But it opened up a whole new can of mysteries I now want to uncover.
The background of these two is a blast and a little sad for both.
But their dynamic is still a powerful one.
I don't understand shit in regards to dead apple though, so I'll have to read that one to better understand.
I'll buy this eventually, it'll be a delight to reread.
And Chuuyas brother is Verlaine??
I need answers stat.
The thing about this I adored the most was the similarity of Dazai and Mori. The three gens of Soukoku are all fascinating in different ways and are my favourite part about the universe.
But everything about Dazai was sad as usual, I still wonder who his parents were and when he started trying to kill himself.

Someone please drag me out of this rabbit hole (the Bungo Stray Dogs hole)... It's affecting my social life and my sleep.

I loved this light novel. I finally got to read how Dazai and Chuuya met and why they joined the Port Mafia. And that cliffhanger 🤯

Only diamond can polish a diamond - Mori Ougai

Am I being bias while rating this book? Definitely! Does it really deserve 5 stars? I'D GIVE MORE THAN THAT IF I CAN!!!!!

Background info
This light novel is set in the past, 7 years before the actual timeline of the manga. If you have wondered how Dazai and Chuuya end up being partner (also known as Soukoku/Double Black) in the mafia, this light novel will explain their first meeting, and most importantly how both Dazai and Chuuya decided to join the Port Mafia. The story had also been adapted/included in the first few episodes of season 3 for the anime.

Why should you read this?
So, why should you read it if you've watched the anime? Because Asagiri Sensei has written the story in much more detailed in the book. There are many parts and conversation that were not included in the anime, especially if you want to know about Randou (the sub-executive of mafia who is always cold despite wearing layers of clothes). There are also parts where Chuuya's origin is explained, which eventually will lead to the next light novel, but compared to the anime, you can understand his past a bit better when you read it. I'M SO AMAZED BY THIS!! ASAGIRI SENSEI REALLY KNOWS HOW TO WRITE SUCH A WONDERFUL STORY✨✨

Characters and their dynamic
Dazai: Do you think you could leave me alone? I'm busy breathing right now.
Chuuya: I'm about to rip that head right off your body, mummy boy.

Dazai and Chuuya, the same age, two different persona but BICKERS EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY MEET EACH OTHER🤣 I think it might be because they're at the same age, which makes them feel comfortable to piss each other's off hahaha Dazai calling Chuuya short, Chuuya calling Dazai suicide maniac, they're so chaotic but their dynamic when put together, can bring marvelous thing, and the Port Mafia leader knows it.

The characters in bsd is one of the reasons I love the story so much. They are written so well, and even the villains speak things that are agreeable.

Writings and Arts
And lastly, as always I want to praise both the author and the mangaka, Asagiri sensei and Harukawa sensei for blessing us with a great story and wonderful art. The words in the book is so poetic, so beautiful, they went straight into my heart and affect me emotionally. I feel what the characters are feeling, I see what the characters are seeing, even their facial expressions are described so well. And the characters' designs really bring the story to life, making it goes BOOM FUWAHHH DUSH DUSH DUSH WOW (if you understand what I mean...)

Conclusion
Overall, REALLY REALLY WORTH THE READ!! I can't recommend it more!! If you are the precious boy, aka Chuuya stan, go read this!!! And especially if you love bsd, you surely don't want to miss this out!!!

And the cliffhanger... STORMBRINGER, I CAN'T WAIT TO READ YOU NEXT!!!!!

P/s: I'm holding myself back from sharing too much quotes because I'm afraid it will be spoilers.. and it's so hard because these words deserve to be shared!!! Don't worry though, what I included below are spoiler free~

Quotes:
1. "Violence and war are not necessary for survival. In other words, if everyone agreed to stop fighting and banned all weapons, then violence would be no more. But that isn't realistic. No matter what, someone will break the rules to get ahead of the rest because that's always the most profitable option."

2. "Live. There is no longer any way of knowing who you are or where you came from. But even if you are but a pattern etched on the surface of raw power, you are you. Nothing changes that because all people, all humanity, their brains and flesh are nothing more than patterns---beautiful patterns upon the material world."

3. "Why do you want to die?"
"Let me ask you something instead: Do you truly believe there's value in living?"

"Those eyes weren't something that just anyone could have . They were the glow of a blue sky that only those who have decided to live can have."

Dazai and Chuuya truly are perfect for each other. It was very nice to know more about their pasts. Soukoku is such a great duo, I'm conviced they could make any plotline work. Also: Dazai is a fucking genius, that bastard. How come everytime something happens we get to the end and the twist is: well, Dazai planned that all along. Love how unhinged this man and his plans are, always willing to use the ends to justify the means- and his means are always very questionable. But truly deep down he is a just guy looking for answers. The book does a very good job showing that, the complexity of Dazai's emotions, showing us why the characters are the way they are today. The deep dive into Chuuya's past was by far the best part of the novel to me- my perspective on him has complety shifted. The only complain I have is... it's so short. I wanted more! Lucky me the arch continues in Stormbringer. I can never get enough of them.

I adore Dazai and Chuuya and their love-hate relationship so much, this was so good to me.

There is something so special about a relationship where the two met as kids and supposedly hate each other, but also are the only person the other really trusts (gay). Soukoku have just that in the manga and the anime and I felt like we really got to see how it blossomed in this.

This also was really incredible in characterizing these two. The difference between Dazai pre-mafia, mafia, and ADA is so stark and I think this really set the scene for the suicide-obsessed character we see. I also loved to see Chuuya's character because as a side character, he is not really explored as much in the animanga, and this light novel highlights his character and how fiercely loyal he is. It is no surprise that these two have still maintained their relationship even after seven years of arguing and Dazai leaving the mafia. I love them so much.

It is really so funny to me that Chuuya is a literal god but he also carries the burden of being a redhead, 5'4, and homosexual. He really is the best character of all time.

I dedicate my blood - my everything - to you, boss. I will protect this organization you slave over and work myself to the bone in order to decimate its enemies. Those who oppose the Port Mafia will learn firsthand how ruthless gravity can be.

I have no words to describe how much I love Chuuya and how grateful I am to Asagiri for introducing us to his past - and how his fate tied to Dazai's - through this little gem that is Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen.

This is my entire life and for obvious reasons this one goes straight to favorites. Absolutely NOTHING is as good as soukoku’s dynamic. I have 728 books marked as read in goodreads and no relationship comes even close to the complexity of Dazai and Chuuya’s. This novel is so important to understand their dynamic but also to understand them as /individual/ characters. The author is really a genius 💕

The style is quite poor but I know it's not the point of those light novels anyway, just as there's no point in reading them if you're not into BSD in the first place.
Still 5 stars because I had a good time and because Chuuya owns my soul.
