When my husband found this perfect little cabin in the woods for our honeymoon, I couldn’t wait to get away. Just us in the middle of the forest, waking up every day in the trees, ending each night in the hot tub under the stars. But now I’m not sure that I know my husband at all…
I just wish we’d gone to the police when someone left a note on the doormat saying: She’s dead, you’re next. Ryan said I was overreacting, but I don’t understand why he won’t go to the cops now things are getting worse. Can I trust my husband?
I’ve known about the terrible thing that Ryan did for years and it’s been tearing me apart. Last night I told him I would always keep his secret. But is the man I married hiding something else from me?
Now someone has cut the phone lines and we’re trapped here. Ryan swears he has no idea what’s going on and just wants to keep us safe. I’m here alone in the middle of the dark forest with the man I thought I could trust. My heart is racing and there’s no one I can call…
My husband promised till death do us part. Am I about to find out what that means?
A heart-pounding, unbelievably twisty psychological thriller that will have you sleeping with the light on! Fans of Gone Girl, Behind Closed Doors and Date Night will be utterly gripped.

2.5 stars This book started off strong, it was really intense and creepy at the beginning, even though the characters were a little dramatic and frustrating, I was invested and wanted to see where it would go. But after part 2, it became very boring and predictable and I’m sad because this book had potential that I felt like was wasted. I’m starting to feel like this author just might not be for me. 🥲

A honeymoon away from it all, sounds like bliss, right?
Wrong!!!!
Grace and Ryan have been married for 6 months and are spending their honeymoon in an isolated cabin in the woods. Should be a romantic time, but then things begin to start happening which shatter their plans. Are these things just bizarre one offs perpetrated by local teenagers or is someone trying to scare them? Would you go to the police when you receive a note or have your windshield broken? Would your secrets keep you from acting logically?
This was a fast paced, clever book, with some twists along the way! It does not take long before things start happening and we get both Grace and Ryan’s IPOV throughout the book. This helps move the book; along and to entice readers into trying to figure out the secrets of the main characters.
I enjoyed the trapped claustrophobic feel of the book. Several times throughout, I was shaking my head at the main characters. This is a book; that can easily be read in one day. It is enjoyable and kept me on my toes.
Clever, fast paced, read!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was really intrigued by the premise, I like to read stories about being stranded, being trapped in a place without phone service, being stalked by a crazed person or a serial killer, so the suspense was there. I could forgive the overly affectionate husband (his thoughts creeped me out a few times.)
The spooky cabin in the woods vibe unsettled me, like, really scary stuff. (Spending your honeymoon in a remote cabin doesn't sound romantic, at all.) The pace was a little bit in the middle, I got really excited when I got to the Part 2 of the book, I think it added more depth to the back story of the main character. It drove the whole plot to another level.
Overall, this was an exciting read. It reminded me of a book I read just last year.
I've never seen this much plot twists in one book 😂😭
So gripping and wonderfully written - you definitely don't want to miss this out!
Grace and Ryan are a young couple who are married for six months and finally taking a break from work for their honeymoon. Ryan has found a perfect cabin in the mountain to spend time with each other and have some privacy away from other people. But as soon as they walked into the woods, things begin to happen near the woods and there is only one man who Grace thinks is responsible!!
This was a fast paced, page-turning novel and I'm so glad I read this!! You won't be bored because they are twists upon twists and the plot is so amazing that I cannot recommend this book enough!!
I received an eARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Just Married by Kiersten Modglin is listed as a psychological thriller which I can see, mostly. I thought that this one had a touch of a horror vibe to it too though as it was rather creepy at times being one that you may not want to read after dark.
Grace and Ryan are a young couple who married six months earlier but had to postpone taking a honeymoon at the time. Ryan has found a cabin for rent that he thinks would be the perfect getaway with privacy and beautiful surroundings.
After arriving Grace and Ryan are enjoying their time away and their time with each other until they take a walk in the woods and come across a homeless man camping. Grace is immediately concerned with their safety but Ryan is sure he is harmless. But when things begin to happen near the cabin Grace is sure the man is responsible.
Just Married is the first book I’ve picked up from this author and boy was I glad I did. This one was incredibly tense and chilling and I couldn’t stop reading after I started. I always enjoy when there are plenty of twists in a novel but I think it’s even more fun when I finished thinking forget the twists, that was just twisted period. If this one had been a bit longer with a little more depth it probably would have been five stars but it was still great at the shorter length leaving me to rate this at four and a half stars.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
📚After the resort in the woods (The Hollows, by Mark Edwards), it's time for the cabin in the woods! Seems like I'm in the mood to read about not-so-peaceful vacations!😅
Final thoughts: When I started this book, I knew I was in for a page-turner full of twists and that's exactly what I got! It was my second book by this author (certainly not the last) and it's funny because both were about unconventional couples. They were also equally gripping.
While I really liked The Arrangement, its over-the-top ending made me cut half a star. In Just Married, I thought the biggest plot twist was clever and the ending entirely satisfying.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC!
⭐⭐⭐⭐ + WOW! WOW! WOW! My first novel by Kiersten Modglin. One reviewer described her as “the Queen of Twists”. WHAT? I call myself an avid psychological thriller fan and I have not read this author. How have I missed her????? I guarantee that will change!!
Story is about Grace and Ryan who are newlyweds and have been married for 6 mos. They did not go on a honeymoon as they were saving their money to do a one year anniversary honeymoon celebration. Ryan decided that perhaps they should take their honeymoon now and get away from daily responsibilities. Although Grace is apprehensive about travel she likes that Ryan picked a secluded cabin deep in the woods. They can be together with no work responsibilities.
Their first night they are enjoying the outdoor hot tub on the patio but when they return to the house, they discovered they are locked out. They spend the night on the patio however, in the morning when the try the door it is no longer locked. Hmmm
The next day while on a hike they find a homeless man; later Grace sees this same homeless man in their yard. Grace is now a nervous wreck but the library book on the front porch with a note “Janie’s dead, you’re next” totally has her nearly off the edge! We find out that both Grace and Ryan have secrets ~ I am ~ Oh Hum ~Piece of cake ~ got it! Ha-ha Yep! I was soooo wrong!
Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this eGalley. This file has been made available to me before publication in an early form for my honest professional opinion. Publishing Release Date scheduled for July 5, 2021 ~ Yep today is Pub Day!!
This was my least favorite Kiersten Modglin book to date. Sort of exemplified why psychological thrillers aren’t my preferred genre. The entire story became so incredibly jumbled and overcomplicated that it lost my attention shortly after Part 1 concluded. And that aforementioned portion had a strong showing, but then it just quickly devolved into something that wasn’t enjoyable. If Modglin just stuck with developing Ryan and Grace, this would have been tremendously better. The secrets that troubled their newfound marriage, a homeless man terrorizing them on their vacation, suspicions about their good friend, all of these plot points were plenty to work with. Simplicity has its charm. And doing anything in excess is a fault. This book ran away with itself, letting the less admirable traits overshadow the finer qualities. So I didn’t enjoy this experience much at all, but did appreciate the effort and writing proficiency by the author.
I really liked this twisty thriller with a bit of an old school horror vibe. I’ve read a few of Kiersten Modglin’s books now and I have enjoyed them all! Full of twists and turns that will keep you glued to the pages. This one took a little bit to get into for me (the cheesy, intense, lovey stuff in the beginning took a teensy bit longer than I would have liked). Grace and Ryan have been married for about 6 months but haven’t taken a honeymoon yet. Ryan wants to help his nervous wife get away and relax so they head off to a remote cabin in the woods. What they find in the woods is much scarier and intense than they expected. Told in alternating perspectives this book is sure to keep you guessing.
Woah, this book was something else. I read this book in two days and that still wasn’t fast enough. This book was such a quick read. The pacing was perfect and the reveals happened exactly when they needed to. I loved the setting of the story taking place at a secluded cabin. The reader has no idea what is truly happening or which characters to trust if any. I could literally feel the tension building as I was reading this story. My only issue with this book which isn't even an issue is the author made me like both characters. The whole time I was reading I was rooting for them both and didn't want anything to happen to either of them. I felt way too invested in their lives and what would happen to them. I must say if I was ever at a random cabin in the middle of nowhere and anything started happening I would immediately pack up and go home! Like all of her books, I'm not going to say much because they speak for themselves and I’d hate for anything to get spoiled. Read the synopsis then read the book! I promise you will not be disappointed!
@kierstenmodglinauthor is officially an insta-buy author for me. This is the second book I've read from her and just like the first book it was fantastic. Honestly, I can't read her books fast enough. When I'm not reading them I'm obsessively thinking about them. Trying to think of all possible theories and even when I think I might have it figured out it ends up being something else I never even considered.
Thank you Netgalley, Bookouture, and Author Kiersten Mifflin for this fantastic ARC.
At first, I thought maybe Mifflin had lost her minds eyeballs were exhausted from rolling every time this married couple made some sappy remark to one another. Thankfully, it wasn't long before the honeymoon was pushed aside and Modglin's prowess burst into the story.
This book was fast-paced and it had sharp claws. The danger lingered, slithering ever closer. I couldn't help but grip my Kindle with white knuckles as goosebumps spread over my skin. And then came the twist--I knew these two lovebirds had secrets but, boy oh boy, I had no idea it would so cold blooded!
Bravo, bravo, Modglin, once again you wrote a masterpiece of suspense, mystery, and utter thrill.
I don’t know how Modglin manages to produce book after book with nail-biting suspense, with so many twist and darkness that you feel it in your bones. The characters are perfectly portrayed, complex and compelling. From their viewpoint you really get their choices. I loved this book so much and can’t believe this is one of FOUR books that will come out this year!
Holy hell this book is good and this review is going to be virtually impossible to write without giving anything away. The amount of shocks I got from this book I may as well have been sitting in an electric chair.
Told via dual narration we join Ryan and Grace on their honeymoon although horrormoon seems more appropriate. Secluded cabin in the middle of creepy woods tick, no phone signal tick, deranged creepy man in the woods tick, and a husband you don’t trust and who is keeping a huge secret from you tick. This seriously ticked a lot of boxes.
Grace’s anxiety was through the roof and mine wasn’t far behind. As the creepiness escalates the tension becomes almost unbearable. Ryan is infatuated with his wife Grace and promises to protect her but who or what is he protecting her from?
I’m going to stop there as like I said I don’t want to give anything away. I have been a bit meh with thrillers lately, seeing things coming a mile away or guessing the culprit early on. So what a lovely surprise this was and it totally gave me back my love for thrillers.
I’m desperate for others to read this now so I can share my thoughts on what happened. So please make my day, read this and let me know what you thought. I need to discuss urgently!
To the author, you devious twisted little minx I absolutely, categorically loved it and I am now going to put your entire back catalogue on my tbr pile.
Have you read a book by this author before? I discovered her last year and have been making my way through her books ever since. Whenever I feel kinda slumpy or when I need a guaranteed fast paced and exciting thriller I know I can grab one of her books because that’s exactly the type she consistently writes. All of that to say, if you haven’t read her before she has an extensive backlist and she comes out with new books several times a year, I swear she’s a writing machine, but I’ve totally enjoyed every book of hers I’ve read thus far!
I love an atmospheric thriller and this one delivers, the isolated cabin in the woods was eerie and then add in the creepy things that keep happening to Grace and Ryan and you have a chilling read. This was a fast read, both because it’s under 300 pages with short and snappy chapters, but also because things unfold so quickly you can’t bear to put it down. As always I didn’t see the twists coming ahead of time and I was definitely surprised by the direction this took, lots of secrets and lies and plenty of darkness as well, overall everything I want in an entertaining thriller.
Really really super tense and suspenseful read from Kiersten Modglin!!! The changing POVs between our two main characters, Grace and Ryan, worked incredibly well, and kept the fast pace moving throughout the entire book! There were some super creepy moments in this book that had me jumping at the slightest noises in my house. But I made the mistake of reading well into the night, so that’s my bad! The twists were terrific and just kept coming!!
I’d you haven’t read a book from this author yet, please please do!! You’ll be on the edge of your seat and won’t be able to turn the pages fast enough!
Grace has recently married Ryan and the happy couple finally decides to take a honeymoon together. Grace is delighted by Ryan’s choice of the honeymoon location, which is a secluded cabin deep in the woods. She envisions a place where they can be alone together and they can forget about their jobs and escape from the real world for a while.
The honeymoon takes an abrupt turn when a note is found on the cabin doormat saying, “She’s dead, you’re next.” Ryan is reluctant to get the police involved and Grace does not know why. Is he hiding something? Things just escalate from there and Grace feels terrified and alone. Will she make it out alive?
Not your typical honeymoon! This storyline was like a rollercoaster ride! I was highly engaged with this book from the beginning to the very last page. Kiersten Modglin spins another superb tale that will keep you guessing until the end. If you are a Kiersten Modglin fan, you will love this book. If you have not read her books before, this would be a great one to start with.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This review will be posted to my Instagram Blog (@coffee.break.book.reviews) on July 5, 2021.
The twists - incredibly well done. A short, intense read that forces you to finish in one sitting. Ryan decides to take Grace on their late honeymoon. He finds a remote cabin within their budget. Grace has serious anxiety issues - requiring time to adjust to plans, environments, etc. After settling in, strange things start to happen. They are locked out after a soak in the hot tub. On a hike in the woods, they find a strange feral man living in a tent. After their windshield is cracked from a rock, they travel into town. Only to hear the haunting history of the cabin. Will they survive the murder cabin? Incredible twists and suspense. Kept me on the edge of my seat.
Questo libro è una calamita. Non vi farà dormire la notte!
📌 𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗼: La casa nel bosco
📌𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗲: Thriller psicologico
📌𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮:
This book was pretty basic until the end of part one and the second part, which was interesting but felt like torture porn at times. I could predict what would happen by simply considering the worst. Then it kind of fell off at the end again.
The audio narration was too much, especially the guy. I live in TN and it was way too yeehaw, even for me. It felt cartoonish.
It's short, only a little over 200 pages, but it's a good story. Liked the characters, loved the back and forth POV. I thought I knew what would happen, and I got it wrong, so that's a win for a psychological thriller.
Every couple has secrets. Some are shared between them. Others are not.
Grace is the only person who knows her new husband Ryan’s big secret. It’s what brought them together as a couple, and it’s what would destroy him if she ever told. Although Ryan worries her silence won’t last, his extreme love for her overrides his fear of being exposed. He’s obsessed only with making Grace happy. However, little does Ryan know that his bride has secrets too — dangerous secrets that could change everything.
As much as Grace loves Ryan, she’s finally ready to reveal what she’s been hiding. Their honeymoon trip to a cabin in the mountains is the perfect time. But when a homeless man they encounter in the woods begins to stalk and threaten them soon after their arrival, there’s no longer time for romance or revelations. Isolated and afraid, their focus becomes solely on finding an escape. For reasons Grace can’t understand, Ryan doesn’t want to go to the local police for help. But as the madman makes his murderous intentions clear, Grace knows that it’s do or die.
Gripping, menacing, and filled with tense moments that’ll have your breath stuck in your throat, “Just Married” is a book full of secrets — with a huge secret of its own. Author Kiersten Modglin is the queen of twists, and she proves why with this startling, suspenseful tale. Despite developing a compelling storyline in the first part of the book, Modglin chucks the path she’s on to throw in a twist so huge that it takes the story in a completely new direction. Doing this doesn’t work well for all books. Think Terryn Fisher’s “The Wives” – at least, in my opinion. But it works like magic for Modglin and “Just Married”.
Told from both Ryan and Grace’s point of view, “Just Married” is fast moving without a single lull in the storyline. Unease and suspicion quickly ratchet into tension, terror, and heart-pounding suspense as you race through the chapters. It’s a book that can make you forget to eat or drink. It’s a book that will make you forget to breathe. You’ll jump at any shadows you see outside your window, that’s for sure.
“Just Married” by Kiersten Modglin is a psychological thriller most will love, but it’s also one that will make you think. Can a marriage survive secrets, even when the secrets directly involve the marriage? And when secrets are revealed, can they make a relationship stronger? Or do they permanently alter the dynamic between a couple? You’ll have to read the book for yourself to find out the mind-blowing way Grace and Ryan’s marriage changes after secrets come out. It’s another twist in a book full of them.
Thank you to Bookouture and author Kiersten Modglin for the gifted eARC.
This is one intense, twisted, addictive, complex, insane, jaw-dropping novel! Not only is this a very well-written book with wonderfully-interesting characters, but the suspense builds at just the right pace as the story unfolds. Fast-paced. Riveting. Emotional. Suspenseful. This book brings it ALL!
I've loved Kiersten Modglin's books but this was unbelievably bad
I really stopped reading this about 1/3 of the way and then skimmed the rest. I really don't like writing bad reviews as I could never write a book but this was truly awful.
Well I just discovered a new author! And I’m “smitten”! This book may not be the best psychological thriller that I have ever read but it certainly ranks up there near the top. There are many twisty turns, creepy moments, and main characters that I wanted to pummel! I was also a little suspicious of the situation but couldn’t quite put my finger on why! Good job author, Kiersten Modglin, in keeping me on my toes!
